Official Advance Wars: Dual Strike topic!

I have yet to take out the stylus to play this game. I just play it like I did AW1 and 2.
Haven't gotten far, but it seems like I'll be wasting many an hour just like I did with the earlier games.

I'm stuck on stage 11 :( I keep getting completly buggered the second that black gets its dual strike, which always occurs about 3 turns into the match. I thought I'd nailed it the 3rd attempt I took at it but still no dice , I can have like 8 units in good spots and 6 of them die during the dual strike.

FYI , its the level where you steal the black boat design. You also get 2 armies, I thought it'd be an easy stage.

I failed quite a few times there too. What I ended up doing (as Orange Star army) was sending all my indirect fire units SE to hold off the main force to the S, and rushed my tanks infanty NE toward's thier lab. I secured one of the factories on the way and pumped out a another tank unit before finaly assaulting the lab, just to make sure. Worked out pretty well, the lab is relativley undefended.

Combat mode, which I borderline loathed before, is really growing on me.

For one, everything in battle maps is farking expensive as shit in this game, and there's a lot of it, and Combat mode is by FAR the fastest way to earn coins. A quick run through basic combat nets me like 1000, whereas a long War Room battle nets me around 300, assuming I do everything perfectly. I'm not ignoring war room (still want to fill in all those blanks with Ss), but I'm not beating spann island over and over again for coins like I remember doing previously :)

Its also made MUCH better by using the stylus (unlike the main game itself). With the stylus you can be shooting fowards while retreating backwards, or moving in any direction while shooting in any other direction. Stylus firing makes combat MUCH easier and much more fun than it is otherwise.

I still vastly prefer the normal AW experience, though.

I'm going to pick this up on Saturday. I'm trying to beat the Hard mode on Advance Wars 2 right now.

I have one question though. Is the ranking system back into it? You know the one that the first game had. Where you started out at Rank 99 or whatever and worked your way down. That was one part I dearly missed in the 2nd game.

I have no idea why they took the ranking system out for AW2.

GDJustin can probably answer this better than I can (I've only logged three hours) but there is a ranking screen on which you accumulate medals. (There are a total of 300 medals you can get--some for performing well, some for putting in enough playtime, and some for screwing up, apparently.)

You can also level up COs in the campaign, but I don't know if that levelling carries over to the war room, multiplayer games, etc. (I've been playing campaign mode exclusively.)

The medals thing sounds exactly like the one in StarOcean 3 (also tracks 300 "accomplishments"), except AWDS doesn't squat on 1500K or so of mem card propoerty.

I hope AWDS sells well and I hope Hudson is watching, cause, I hope to God to have a Nectaris~Military Madness game for DS within a year or two.

Started playing this today got it yesterday.. i went to my bed and began playing at 1am for only 30 mins then go to bed and go to work in the morning.. next thing i knew it was 4am.. =[

games addicting as hell.. im loving the story too

Picked up my copy today from Gamestop. I would have picked it up on Tuesday but I just got back from a small trip. I'm just now tearing into it. Can't wait to sink endless hours into this one just like the previous two.

yo, I thought you can play up to 8-players with ONE cart! But that only works for COMBAT mode, which SUCKS.

Still 4 players off one cart for regular mode is good.

I'm on mission 20 now and I just figured out how to activate skills. S-ranked everything so far, but damn, I could've used those extra 5% damage boosts and whatnot here and there.

I beat mission 11 , yay me. I still damn near lost though. Trick seems to be proper utilization of given resources. The first 3 days are all prep for the first dual strike , then you rebuild the damages, actually using the blue forces in the south of the map to wittle down the mass of units above them helps as well.

what screwed me before was that I lost both my inf and mech unit for orange star which means I couldnt' take over that factory. Course , I suppose another way to do this level would have been sending alot of units north keeping only the neccessary at the orange star base and moving blue slowly northward eliminating enemies has you go. I kind of did it in a round about way and took I think 1 day longer then the game required for top ranks.

I'm on mission 10 or 11. Pretty small map this time around (just destroyed the first crystal).

So uh... you can use the stylus in this game?

Just played to Mission 10 in campaign, I can see this is going to be one helluva game. Loved AW2, and I had no problem picking this up right away. The Tag Powers are awesome (nothing like Rachel's 3 nukes to soften up the enemy before tearing through lines with Max!), and I can definitely see that it will get deeper in terms of CO leveling abilities and second screen unit placement strategies.

Jake's lines.. :lol :lol oh man they're bad, but in a good way.

"You got dropped like a phat beat."
I was laughing for a good minute or two after this line popped up after a mission. :lol

I just got to mission 19, the difficulty is just right and the new units rock hard.

all around amazing. map making is so convinient and easy, hope you got friends to play this with, trading maps must be sweet.

Got this game yesterday. I played the campaign mode for four or five missions, but I hate drudging through tutorials when i already know how to play, and the kid they replaced Andy with was written terribly

So I decided to check out some of the other modes. Survival Mode: AWESOME!

Combat Mode: AWESOME * 10!

It's like something from the eighties! I want more than six maps :(

I passed Brutal combat without losing any vehicles today with Andy as my CO and it was intense! I raked in the cash too, after completing all of the combat modes I earned well over 10000 whatever the money units are, so I purchased tons of maps. I hope campaign mode picks up, but for the time I am having a blast with all of the alternate modes and the War Room and I'm glad they were included. It already looks like this will be my favorite AW, and I played the other two obsessively.

is that correct? I thought all 4 players needed carts for regular mode.

Oh, maybe not. Might just be pass-around if you're doing 4 players with one copy of the game.

I just beat mission 22 and the game is just getting incredible. I'd s-ranked 1-21 no problem, but 22 really kicked my ass. I settled for a B.
It seemed like that was the final mission. It was ultra hard, there was an ending "cinematic" and things started to wind down. And then boom! Incoming assault, call Commander Nell for reinforcements! Even though we just beat what seemed like the final boss, there's a full scale assault on the way.

Twelve hours in and I've got 20/300 medals.

Right now I'm stuck on the 6th Mission. It's the first Naval Battle you engage in, and I get so close every time, but something always puts me away. One time I had a Copter left as my only offensive unit that could get into range, but it was out of Missiles, and my APC to supply it was destroyed early on. I waited for the last enemy unit to hopefully move, but it just sat there. And my B-Copter ran out of fuel, and crashed into the sea. After Day 35, I just turned off my DS :lol Despite my personal troubles with this mission, I'm loving it.

I just picked this up and this is my first experience with Advance Wars. I am only 28 minutes into the game and have completed 3 missions in the main story mode. How many missions are in the campaign? Is it a long one?

I like what I see, this game is a blast so far.

Can't wait to play tonight.

Someone just answerd that two posts above yours. :lol There's about 28, but it varies depending on the optional missions you get for finding maps to secret labs.

I just got to the part where you fight
the Olaf clone. I am glad they brought back clones, its nice to have more variety in the enemy COs....I kinda have mixed feelings about the story, and Hawke/Lash defecting from Black Hole (or Bolt Guard, I guess).

The gameplay still rules. Loving it...I think I have put about 8-9 hours into the campaign so far.

:lol That's the mission with Colin and Sasha. It's a rather easy mission, if you listen to what Sasha tells you to do. Load up a tank and an infantry unit onto the lander in the upper left hand corner. Then, just use your Missile Launcher to attack the cruiser that is within it's range. Have the submarine dive and then head it towards the battleship. Keep the submarine submerged and it should be able to take out the battleship in two hits. That's your biggest worry on this map. As you are doing all of this, move the lander closer to the HQ, giving it plenty of protection. When you reach there, drop off the tank and infrantry and capture the HQ. Easy S rank.

The funny part is, I finished that mission right after I posted, and got an S rank. But it took me like 4 or 5 tries. I don't know what it was but...Anyway, I passed it. Like I said, I'm an Advance Wars noob, so you gotta give me a break :lol

Yeah, but don't worry about being a noob. You'll catch onto everything the game has to offer quickly. You just have to know how to use each unit effectively and efficiently and use the terrain to your advantage.

Is there anyway to replay missions you've already completed? Like, to get a better rank or gain more EXP?

The War Room has a variety of stuff like that, and later on you'll be able to replay the campaign from start to finish (and in Hard mode if you want).

I'm really loving the Hawke/Lash defection.
At first I wondered how they'd manage to make the COs unique and fun with so damn many of them now, but starting out with the originals and phasing old ones in during key points is pretty great. They're really being introduced and trotted out in interesting ways.

Ok, I'm warming up to Hard Campaign now. It's... hard. BUT, I don't think it's any more difficult than AW1 or AW2's. Especially with force ranks, etc. Force-rank boosted Nell or Hachi? Fuggeddaboutit.

Wow, and I was having trouble with first naval mission :lol I'm now on the 8th Mission, and that is some tough stuff! I got to Day 20, and by then I was just getting over ran by Black Hole. Next time I'm going to have to make a move for some more buildings to gather some more cash or something.

I don't think that's Nell. The Cube game and the Advance games have no common story or characters, as far as I know.

But I do have a question, before Advance Wars 1, did the other Wars games have a story, and COs and all that jazz? Are any of those COs still around in the Advance games?

My bad its Betty.

Advance Wars was the first 'Wars game to introduce COs, and a campaign with a storyline. Super Fami Wars was the first to introduce the four armies (OS, BM, GE & YC). The original Famicom Wars just had Red army Vs. Blue army.

This game rocks, hard.
I'm up to mission 12, itching for a spare moment to play it again but I've gotta help the missus cook some dinner.

I'm really happy with this purchase, I got Nintendogs as well but this is getting more of my attention. I'm really happy with Nintendogs as well though.

Although, I find Jake annoying, :lol @ the plates quote.

I can't believe it. I fired up my DS around 1:00 am to have another go at the 8th Mission, where Black Hole first uses Dual-Strike. This time around, I'm running them over. Even when they used Dual-Strike, they didn't do much damage to me. I shift my hands, my thumb lands on the Power button (I'm in the complete dark, in bed), and my system shuts off :lol I couldn't believe it. I'll have to start over sometime again today.

I was bamboozled. I wanted to try out the single cart multiplayer (up to 8) with my friend who I just convinced to buy a damn DS. Unfortunately the single cart only works with combat mode (the real-time action version instead of the turn-based mode). While it is kind of fun, it is nothing compared to the main mode.

One question I had for anyone who got to try the main game multiplayer, can you do co-op or team vs team??

Yes, the vs. maps include every kind of scenario you can think of. 4P free for all, 2v2 teams, 3 vs. 1, 2 vs 1, 3 player free for all, etc.
