Official Batman: Arkham Knight Trailer – “Gotham is Mine”

I'm sorta indifferent about Dini's lack of involvement. His other two Arkham stories were a bit messy - the first was good until it blew the ending and the second had too much going on throughout.

I don't even consider the first's story good beyond the setup. Nothing notable happens throughout that game from a plot perspective up outside of
Dr. Young dying
, having to go into Croc's den and Poison Ivy becoming more powerful. It just doesn't outright become disappointing until the abysmal final boss encounter. The rest of the game becomes disappointing when you realize it was entirely building up to something meaningful, then never delivered.

Dini's Batman work outside of the Arkham game series is routinely good, but his writing style doesn't seem to work with video games well. The Crysis guy being involved is obviously terrible, but I've long since given up on the story being at all good considering the people who worked on Batman: Arkham Origin won't be involved with Knight. Dini's absence isn't a problem.

So any word on whether this is using PBR or not, because the character models look like the best yet in an open world game.

It does. You can clearly see on the Batman model.

Who told you so? You can't confirm that by simple looks. There are so many cheap tricks to mimic new techs too look like them.

I am almost sure using PBR, otherwise they would have been overhyping it that much and or at least outlined it their workflow. It looks like the Samaritan UE3 version which has reflection shadowing for instance and the per object motionblur added then, which is not PBR. UE3 doesn't have PBR in its renderer, otherwise you need an entire overhaul of the lighting, materials texturesetc system which will lead to completely new engine from scratch otherwise why would Epic create UE4 if they could incorporate PBR and all UE4 stufff in UE3? UE4 (just like many current-gen engines) uses PBR and other advanced lighting techniques not possible in UE3 and last-gen engines. Let's say Batman Arkham Knight (coupled with many Nvidia gameworks effects like faceworks which aren't available for UE4 for now) is the best looking last-gen (tech-wise) game on current-gen platforms.

I don't know how you can get such material quality without PBR. It just looks too good.
You can absolutely have a PBR pipeline with UE3 but the advantage of UE4 is that it comes with such a pipeline already, saving dev time.

Other UE3 games had some form of PBR like Remember Me.

Yeah, I agree. That exchange between Batman and Arkham Knight told me all I needed to know about the writing. Im hoping for some fun moments but I expect it to be really bad.

The goal and the use of PBR is to be energy conserving. You can't tell the difference between Phong from a GGX model just by looking at it in motion. You can have a roughness value on a Phong model too. You can also have a Fresnel term and it still be non-energy conserving.. Anyway, there are many techs to fake certain realtime techniques that can't be used due to hardware or engine limitations and they still look cool for the average eye. Whataver they did is a big achievement for the should-be-dead UE3.
Looking forward to what they could achieve with UE4 which is evolving exponentially and having support from all tech companies

BTW, here is what real PBR looks in UE4: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0DG51glKipU&feature=youtu.be , UE3, please just DIE in peace!

In other news, the cop who's getting beaten down looks a lot like Bruce Wayne. By previous trailers and Against all Odds trailer analysis, we know the cop is voiced by Baker.
If we add this to the involuntary spoiler we got last year
(about Nightwing being the Arkham Knight)
things would definitely take an interesting turn.
Seems to me like the guy who's making these trailers is a much more competent professional than their PR guy XD

That's if trailer-guy isn't responsible for the exchange between Batman and Poison Ivy.

"We decided to see which of us would take you out"

"Over my dead body. "

"..."

I hope that was just improperly cut dialog and the "over my dead body" line was in response to sonething else.

Her response was a bit too perfect for it to be a spliced line.

Yeah, it's cheesy but still, I'm carefully hopeful about the story and the dialogue. I had ABSOLUTE despise for Wendschuh, because of his track record on Assassin's Creed, and yet look at Origins story.
Fingers crossed for the Crysis guy surprising us.

I meant that I hope that Batman's line was in response to something like "We're going to take over the city." Saying "over my dead body" in response to "we're going to try to kill you" is dumb. Really dumb. Arkham Bats is dumb.

That exchange is probably just like it is in the trailer, sadly.

It is? She says "Everyone was there. Scarecrow said he had a plan, that together we would take you out... and Gotham would be ours" and then comes the "Over my dead body!"

I forgot about the "and gotham would be ours" part.

It's still dopey that he says this right after she talks about killing him. The past Rocksteady games have had subject dialog/delivery from Batman ("I eat chumps like these for breakfast :B") and this looks to be no different. Stuff like the "I'm going to show the AK what happens when you mess with MY city," sounds so corny in a non self aware, non-charming way.

Yeah, between "I AM EXPLAINING GAME MECHANICS TO MYSELF OUT LOUD" and the dudebro-ish lines here and there Batman doesn't really have much of a character in these games. Still better than "I came back to stop you!" though!

Especially in a dialed in mono toned voice like Kevin Conroy is bringing to the table, y'all know who I 'd rather have, no need to say it!

This is using 3.9 unreal. From what I know it has some stuff that PBR has (like linear lighting and glossy light streaks), but definitely is missing a lot of other stuff.

Yep, like I explained before, it uses some layers and elements of PBR but is not FULL PBR like in UE4.

The best story thus far was Origins, which didn't have Dini. I'm not really crying over his non involvement.

That is true, Dini has had his fair share of misses. His marvel tv shows haven't been going so hot.

As for what's next for Rocksteady its up in the air. WB Montreal is most likely finishing up Suicide Squad, who's timing may curiously be inline with next year's movie. I hope they do whatever they want to, don't want the talent being burnt out and quit because they're mandated to do another DC title.

He belongs with the original TDK Joker concept art in freakiness:

I love it when Batman goes full horror.

Jesus. If there was ever an alternate universe where we got an R rated Batman film, this would be the Joker they needed. Off the charts creepy.

I truly believe that if a R-rated Batman film would ever happen, it would be with Ben Affleck directing. I think that's one of the few people WB/DC would let get away with it. Or Fincher (who would never in a million years do a superhero film, to my dismay...)

Agreed. Just because he can write great comics does not mean he can create a great game story.

What if the Arkham Knight is Hush?

Its what I'm going for.

I don't understand though, is AK's non involvement in this trailer besides a single shot is deliberate to bring other supervillains' participation in focus or is he really going to be just another lackey of scarecrow who's calling all the shots?

I love Hush, but I really doubt it. Although, the setup where "he had a master plan to kill batman" does fit. He wasn't a match for Batman in terms of hand to hand combat, though, and that what they seem to be going for here.

Heart of Hush is underrated. The ending of it is fucking awesome. It involves Selina Kyle and that segment is the best use of her character in anything, ever.

God I loved Heart of Hush. Such a great story.

We've discussed this so many times and Rocksteady said themselves that Arkham Knight is a totally new character.

Yeah, but what if it's Hush.

Like.

What if Tommy Elliot in this universe becomes the Arkham Knight instead of Hush.

So technically he's a new character.

I know it won't be Hush

It would be cool if Jason Todd became the Arkham Knight, but they haven't explored his story, so there'd be no emotional impact.

The problem with Arkham Knight being any of the past characters is that they said it was an all new character that they created(even though the design is pretty much ripped from another character from Batman's Rogues gallery that does the same thing AK is doing).

He's already Hush in AC. He might not have that name, but he has the outfit, the bandages, the face change. I cannot see AK as Hush.

are you talking about
prometheus?

Yep, like I explained before, it uses some layers and elements of PBR but is not FULL PBR like in UE4.
PBR is just a design philosophy. There's more than one way to implement it and it doesn't require UE4. But UE4 makes it a lot easier by applying the concepts to the material properties.

No game is full PBR because accurately modeling light is hella expensive.

I doubt its Hush just cause the clip we saw of AK speaking would be way out of character for him. AK has an almost dude-bro demeanor. Lots of obnoxious laughing and yelling.

Unless we get a clear confirmation from he devs themselves that they used PBR in their workflow for Arkham Knight, anyone need to refrain supposing that it uses it because it just looks good. MGSV used PBR and it was confirmed by the devs and NVidia. We need official words like that !

I just spotted this: http://www.gamezone.com/news/batman...er-has-some-sort-of-hidden-code-in-it-3413541

There is a secret code in the trailer:

ARkham-Knight-HIdden-code.jpg

"c Rcn3n3 N2Jn3tjHn2"

After utting the code here: https://www.batmanarkhamknight.com/#poi

"As soon as we put that code in, we were no longer treated with a red box, but a blue one, still stating that it's incorrect, but to decode it using a cipher. So now we're stumped again."
