Official bitching about Hudson abandoning VC support. [VC/WiiWare = lost cause]

OFLC update, holy shit imports galore!

-Gradius II: Gofer no Yabou
-Star Parodier
-Digital Champ: Battle Boxer
-Cho Aniki :lol :lol :lol

EDIT: And all of those are Turbo games, so Hudson is really being awesome.

Are any of these any good? Never played any of them.

WTF :lol Ok someone please explain this to me! :lol

Gradius II may be the NES version instead of the TGCD version; the rating doesn't really clarify which system it's for, just listing Konami as the developer.

I think it would make more sense if it was also TGCD as all other 3 new games are TG games as well (1 CD, 2 normal).

All but Digital Champ are actually pretty great, keep an eye on all of them.

As for Cho Aniki: http://hg101.classicgaming.gamespy.com/choaniki/choaniki.htm

Probably. Both the NES version and the TG-CD version have come out in Japan, though (which is actually kind of silly), so it could be either one. I'd hope that they'd bring us the superior TG-CD version.

I'm looking for recommendations on what Virtual Console games to buy that are JPN-only (just received a Japanese Wii). I created a thread here, but no one seems to read the OP (perhaps I'm just too wordy).

HALP!

Thanks guys. So far I have Bomberman '94 (<3) and I think I'm going to grab Salamander (loved me some Life Force on NES). I'm also not fluent at all in Japanese...so it's a plus if the gameplay is easy to figure out.

Pulseman (Mega Drive) is a great action game. It was actually on the US Sega Channel untranslated, and the only Japanese is in (uneccesary) stage descriptions and cutscene subtitles which are voiced in English. That's about the only good Japan-only title I can think of without requiring much Japanese knowledge. There's also numerous other PC Engine shooters that wouldn't need much, if any, translation, but I haven't played most of them.

Thanks sfog. I'm pretty sure I am going to pick up Pulseman. I watched some gameplay videos on Sega's JP site and it looks kick ass. Gotta love the Z80 sound-chip, too...so jarring everytime I watch a Genesis/Mega Drive video on YouTube or whatever. :lol

It's interesting, certainly fun and worth playing. I don't know if I would jump to "great", but yeah, everyone should own it.
You should. "Great" is the new "okay". It doesn't mean much. The current word-of-the-moment to use for games you really want to push is "incredible", but I think that's already winding down a bit. Haven't decided on the next one yet.

Star Parodier, sweet! Like Jiggy, I've been anticipating this for quite some time.
I still want Parodius, though. Get on it, Konami.

Cho Aniki, though...ugh. I wasn't expecting anyone outside of Japan to even get this. In fact, I was actively hoping that we wouldn't get it. >_<

I think Hudson is betting that they'll rack up lots of sales between those curious about the series thanks to its infamy and users looking for the perfect joke gift to send to that someone special. :lol

Cho Aniki's actually a pretty good game, and the first game in the series isn't nearly as weird as the rest (For one, Samson and Adon, the bodybuilders, aren't even the main characters, they act like Options from Gradius).

I think the superiority issue is a little subjective on this one. With the Famicom/NES version, you still get an awesome conversion relative to the hardware, plus a more balanced overall game.

That said, the PC-Engine version will still be welcome as well for the redbook audio soundtrack and the extra stage.

In short, let's hope we get both in the end. Heck, I want every version of every game where possible, which would include having the Famicom/NES version of Parodius to complement the SNES version. And perhaps even the PCE version.

I don't know. Outside of Cho Aniki's rather disturbing imagery, the majority of the material I've read seems to indicate that the Cho Aniki games range from mediocre to poor. One of the sequels apparently requires you to execute fighting-game motions in order to perform attacks and I can't see that working well in a shooter.

Wii-kly Update: Two New Classic Games Added to Wii Shop Channel

The arrival of April means springtime fun is officially back in season. To get Wii™ Shop Channel patrons in the spirit, we’re pleased to offer a pair of lively NES® favorites. One is a breezy, puzzle-busting fantasy, the other a classic baseball title to keep sports fans fired up for a new season of nine-inning excitement. Whether your tastes run toward cookies or ballpark snacks, you’ll find hours of gaming enjoyment right at your fingertips.

Nintendo adds new games to the Wii Shop Channel at 9 a.m. Pacific time every Monday. Wii™ owners with a high-speed Internet connection can redeem Wii Points™ to download the games. Wii Points can be purchased in the Wii Shop Channel or at retail outlets. This week’s new games are:

Yoshi’s Cookie™ (NES®, 1-2 players, Rated E for Everyone, 500 Wii Points): Take one part puzzle game, combine with intuitive game play, add a pinch of multiplayer action and top with a layer of everyone’s favorite dinosaur. Mix together and let set for roughly 100 stages’ worth of time. If that sounds like a winning recipe to you, then step into the kitchen and get ready for a batch of fast-paced puzzle action. Hunker down to move rows and columns of randomly placed cookies in an effort to align all the cookies of the same type. Successfully assemble a row or column to make the line disappear, then move to a new one. If you’re good enough, you may even be able to make a Yoshi cookie appear! Feel like taking on a friend? Fire up the two-player mode, where you can attack your opponent while competing to match as many cookies as possible. Be careful, though—if your timing is off, you could end up attacking yourself. Who knew dinosaurs had such a weakness for puzzle games and sweets?

Bases Loaded (NES®, 1-2 players, Rated E for Everyone, 500 Wii Points): Bases Loaded is a baseball game with an arcade feel and plenty of options from which players can choose. Select one of 12 teams, set your lineup from the 30 players available (each with different strengths), then play a single game or try to win the pennant. During game play, the screen shows two different viewpoints: one from behind home plate as you’re batting, and the other from the pitching mound in a television-style shot (unique for its time) as your team plays in the field. Strong play control and excellent graphics add to the excitement as you decide what pitch to throw (you can even try to provoke the opposing batter into charging the mound), control all positions on the field, or do your best to get a hit. So step to the plate and find out why this is one of the most popular baseball games on the NES. Can you pull through in the clutch?

The list of downloadable games is updated weekly on Nintendo’s Online Press Room at press.nintendo.com. For more information about Wii, please visit wii.com or contact:

Hooray for games we never saw get rated show up while stuff like Shining Force II, Ys Book I & II, Final Soldier, Dragon Slayer, etc. sits in limbo, and virtual locks like Adventures of Lolo 3 and Castlevania III are nowhere to be found. :(

Just a question: Is there any difference between Yoshi's Cookie and Yoshi & Mario? :|

As far as I know they are the excact same game on the same system....it would be odd for us to get two games excacly alike (I know the whole Adventure Island/Wonder Boy stuff, atleast THOSE were on different systems...)

Man, I used to be down on people when they would bash the VC releases but even now I've found myself transitioning from "Maybe something cool next week." to "Maybe something cool next month." to now "What is all this shit? Do they not want my money? I want to give it to them."

(Mario &) Yoshi and Yoshi's Cookie are completely different from one another, aside from the fact that they're both puzzle games.

Bases Loaded has actually been sitting in limbo for quite a while as well, it's just that nobody cared. :lol I actually had a hunch it might show up this week to coincide with the start of baseball season. I thought it would have been paired with Samurai Shodown (that was the optimistic side of me), so I would have went one for two though.

Yoshi's Cookie is a good game.. but.. the... NES version? Whaaat?
I think I'll just stick with Puzzle Collection.. until Nintendo decides to release the Super NES versions of their quality puzzle games anyways.

God the VC is such a piece of shit now.

Come the fuck ON, Nintendo.
.

edit - I stored up points for a while around the end of last year. IT took me forever to get through them and I haven't stored point on there in like over a month. The next step is to stop visiting this thread. The VC is just all disappointment at this point, to where games like Wonder Boy on the SMS get me excited.

Way to go Nintendo on killing the enthusiasm for your service.

ESRB update:

Fantasy Zone
Can't wait to download it, in about eight months.
Man, it's a great thing WiiWare is on its way or I'd never spend the 4000 points I've got sitting around. :/

Maybe that's been their plan all along?

...

Nah, even from that angle I can't fathom it. Nintendo just doesn't care, period.

Another week without Shining Force 2. I wonder if there's some fetch quest I haven't beaten yet.

There was a time when that made sense, when everyweek at least one game was worth getting. I haven't bought anything new since Do Re Mi came out, and nothing since that for a long time.

I for one can't wait to download Shining Force 2 in July, Ys Book I & II in October, Dragon Slayer in December, Final Soldier in February 2009, Gleylancer in April, and Star Parodier in July.

They've both been rated for a while (though we were unsure if Yoshi's Cookie was the NES or SNES version). So the only good thing I can say about this set of releases is that it at least clears out the ESRB rated list a bit. After all, if all the rated stuff comes out, then we'll have to get to Shining Force 2, Ys, Dragon Slayer, etc eventually.

Right?

So, we've all basically accepted there will never be Mother 2, or any Mother game released in North American ever again.. right? After Nintendo cut out the demo on Brawl, I think that's the nail in the coffin. And it hurts.

I still believe. But others have called me Pollyanna over such matters as these, and they may be right. :(

Who knows.Nintendo has to run out of crap game eventually, then out of good titles everyone has played. Eventually, they have to get to the rare great stuff that choose to not acknowledge in their love-deprivation experiment.

We've been getting stable eng releases of Fire Emblem games since FE7 on GBA, so that's at least something.
FE are generally better games anyway, so I'm not crying too much. :p

Let's make a list of NES Baseball games I'd rather download than 'Bases Loaded'.

Let's see... Baseball Stars(SNK) and Baseball Stars 2(SNK), of course.

Then there's the criminally underrated Little League Baseball(SNK) and Dusty Diamond's All-Star Softball(Broaderbund).

RBI Baseball(Tengen), though graphically dated, is still one of my all-time favorite sports games.

Bad News Baseball(Tecmo), and Baseball Simulator 1.000(Culture Brain) were both better as well.

Base Wars(Konami) isn't traditional baseball, but it's a very fun diversion.

Tecmo Baseball(Tecmo) is a comparable game, mainly because it has the same perspective when batting, but the controls were a bit better in this one.

Actually, There's only 5 NES baseball games that I can say are honestly worse(unless you count the 3 inferior Bases Loaded sequels): Roger Clemens’ MVP Baseball(Acclaim), Major League Baseball(Acclaim), Legends of the Diamond(Bandai), Baseball(Nintendo), and Bo Jackson Baseball(Data East). All of them are licensed games except for the 1983 'black cartridge label' dinosaur(which is already available on the Virtual Console, wouldn't you know it).

Bases Loaded was one of the most 'popular' baseball games for the NES at the time, but that's because when it was released(in 1988), there really wasn't a lot of better baseball games to choose from. Can you believe that for nearly the first 3 years of the NES' lifespan, the ONLY baseball game available was 'Baseball'?(Though, football fans had it much worse.) 'Major League Baseball' by Acclaim finally came out around April of 1988, and...well, it was popular based on the fact that it filled a need, and the fact that it used Major League teams and players...but it wasn't very good. Thankfully, RBI Baseball and Bases Loaded were both released 3 months later, and were both much better.

RBI Baseball was the better between these two games, even though the game looked much more dated(It, in fact, was, as it was originally released in Japan in 1986 as 'Pro Yakyuu Family Stadium' by Namco. 'Moero!! Pro Yakyuu', the Japanese version of Bases Loaded was released 6 months later). However, RBI was much more fun to play AND it featured several(but not all) real MLB teams and players.

Bases Loaded was popular because it featured a perspective that was similar to how you would watch baseball games on TV, with the view behind the pitcher. If anything, it was the most 'realistic' early NES baseball game. It also had voice samples that made the experience more realistic. I think the best aspect of the game is provoking the batter to charge the mound by hitting them in the face. Each team has one 'angry' player, and it was fun to find out which one it was. :D )

Bases Loaded is a novelty game. It was unique and impressive at it's time, but it's not worth revisiting, unless you have the need to get all nostalgic over it. But there are so many better baseball games to choose from.

But anyway, Yoshi's Cookie is a fun little puzzler. I just wish it was Dr. Mario or Tetris that was being releasled instead.
