Official bitching about Hudson abandoning VC support. [VC/WiiWare = lost cause]

What was the EU Update for this week?

Two WiiWare titles (My Pokemon Ranch and Pop) plus new DLC for My Life as a King.

No Virtual Console games this week, which goes to show that NOE are definitely alternating releases.

So do we expect -should they release 1 and 2 in NA as well- Capcom to continue releasing MM games after 9 or will the series see another drought? The older games could take attention away from the massive 9 release but I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

I think NA will get a similar treatment for Mega Man. It's hard to think it won't.

I guess that's something less to bitch about.

It's rated by both the OFLC and the ESRB and Japan is getting it this month, so think again :lol

ARRGH! Ok, never mind SS1 then.
Who knows when SS2 is going to hit VC though, we (EU) just got the first game.

he Zero and Advent games are much harder (assuming that was what turned you off) than most of the 8-bit games (MM 1 NES is still feisty after 21 years)

No, I like (fair) challenge, as long as the game punish you for your mistakes then I'm good.
I mean, I used to beat Arcade GnG with one credit and Super GnG SNES with 2 lives, MM2 can't be a lot harder can it?! Although I find that I'm a lesser skilled player now than when I was kid with too much free time on my hands :)

Btw, downloading MM2 now, I hope the missing sliding won't bother me too much.

I'm willing to bet a one month ban that we don't get any MegaMan on VC or WiiWare this month. If I win I get to stay on NeoGAF and complain about not having MegaMan. If I lose I get banned from NeoGAF for a month of Happy Happy Joy Joy I'm playing MegaMan time.

Could the value of the US dollar be the reason we're not getting certain VC titles?

I personally don't think so. I think they're being withheld for strategic reasons, such as for a specific release alongside a retail game. For instance, I'm willing to bet that Nintendo is developing a Yoshi 2D platformer and is saving Yoshi's Island to promote its release.

Do I dare hold out hope that of these four weeks in July, Star Parodier will arrive on the first chance it gets? D:
Hmm... ... ... ... ... ...nah. A 25% chance isn't strong enough.

So instead I'll dare hold out hope for Shining Force II on Monday. I'm much more likely to get burned on a ~2.5% chance!

Well, I can't explain because here's the thing...

1) In the interest of surpassing my limitations, I concocted a 2,678-word post with an explanation of where it came from, an argument for why I shouldn't have it, an argument for why I should have it, an argument for why maybe it doesn't matter either way, and examples of possible other tags that may have worked more effectively while still being demeaning and tongue-in-cheek in that most strictly unique-to-GAF sense. But...

1b) I realized that if I ever posted said explanation (+ accompanying thoughts), it would derail a thread. Now, if the thread were one that I liked, such as this VC thread or the Chrono Trigger DS thread (another place that I've been asked), then I wouldn't want to derail and thus I couldn't post. If it were a thread that I didn't like, then I wouldn't have been posting in it to begin with, and hence people wouldn't be seeing the tag, and hence people wouldn't be asking about it, and hence I wouldn't have been inclined to post my explanation. So it seems that there would be no opportunity to directly explain through the usual forum posting methods without stirring up some form of trouble. (Or shortening my explanation, but I feel that more is better when it comes to posting and, besides that, it would be painfully out-of-character for me to be concise. Which is why one of my made-up tags would be "plz ignore my walls of text," although admittedly that could fit equally well for a number of other people such as A Black Falcon. Sorry there, ABF, but it's the truth! <_<) Therefore...

2) I came up with what I believed to be a genius plan of dumping the post into Word, taking screen captures, and linking people to those screen captures. This would allow for the full explanation to come through while only occupying a few lines and preventing people from derailing a given thread by quoting the post directly. However...

2b) I realized that if I had saved my post as images and was linking people to them, then there would be nothing stopping people from displaying the images directly and derailing a thread that way. (Insert all my thoughts on derailing here; same argument as before.) Therefore...

3) In the interest of preserving some modicum of sanity on GAF, I would create an Off-Topic thread asking people to explain the story of how they got their tag and what they think of it. This would be especially timely given Denis Dyack's seeming fear that people are potentially scarred by tags, since such a thread could make for a time and place wherein (and when-in?) GAFers provide evidence to demonstrate otherwise. Except...

3b) I realized that if I posted such a thread, it would look like I was in some sort of sour grapes mood, which I'm really not despite the lack of truth. (If anything, it would be because of the lack of truth. :( I won't get people quoting my tag back to me because my posts will more or less never match up to it in a way to allow for that delightful GAF pastime, and--ah, well, let me save it for the gargantuan post.) I don't want to come across as upset if I'm not. Therefore...

4) I decided that I would wait for someone else to create such a thread before providing answers.

And I think that's where I still stand, though as with the three plans before it this is subject to change should I identify some flaw (such as, for example, the possibility that such a thread may never come to exist).

I was going to post some shit about the VC but I got completely derailed by Jiggy's post about potential posting of vital hentai filled information.

But, fearing being shunned, I quickly triple posted, to get back to a nice odd number, since even numbers are unlucky in mother Russia.

Jigs, that was the longest "I'll tell you later" that I've ever seen. Well, as my debit card expired and my bank hasn't sent me a new one, I imagine what we get on Monday will rock.

I try. Well, I couldn't figure out any way to shorten it without omitting key details.
But I will say for now that I do think "Shill for DLC dress-up games" or "3D gaming gives me heartburn" or "Sakurai: Et tu, Jiggy?" or "You write 2,000 words and what do you get? Still not a conclusion, just deeper in debt" would totally work for me, though. D: Among others.

So both Shining Force II and Star Parodier, then, as a theme day of fantasy. Thanks crow! :D

Japan is getting it in September, so it's an educated guess mixed with a bit of cynicism and two hard lemonades.

Gauntlet: Legends was a great game. :(

Best version of Legends, really, due to the full inventory management features.

I loved gauntlet: legends i spent a huge amount of time playing it as well. However i never like dark legacy at all. I can't really explain why though.

Then I'm limited to being cynical that I should be cynical about this. :( Oh well. Better than having rote hope.

I'd like to see Mega Man games released weekly up until Mega Man 9's release, but that would have been overly optimistic even when the VC release schedule for North America wasn't utter crap.

Also, I like how Jiggy's roundabout way to avoid a derailment may just spark a derailment unto itself. Granted, I'm only exacerbating the problem, but... >_> <_<

You guys want want want all of the time. be realistic, there are only a finite number of old games they can release anyway. You'll get your classics sooner or later. Look at PSN and their PSOne releases for crying out loud.

There is no comparison. The PSOne releases are an afterthought, the Virtual Console was a SELLING POINT, put on all of the PRs and in all of the Nintendo reps vocabulary. You're comparing a dead goose to a goose. One is gross and rotting, but the other one keeps biting you in the ass.

We've been over this ground. PSN's PS1 releases being slow doesn't excuse Nintendo, and as any good list warrior like Jiggy, jarrod, or A Black Falcon will show, there's still a huge surplus of VC-eligible games to go through. Then there's the simple fact that it's been far too long since anything good has appeared on the VC that can't easily be acquired elsewhere.

New to this thread, but I want Zombies Ate My Neighbors for the SNES. That game was fun back when I was a kid :(

Oh, but Nintendo did give me Pokemon Puzzle League, so all is forgiven, Nintendo...all is forgiven.

Mostly.

One would think that since the mean VC game is some 15+ years old, waiting another month to a year wouldn't be such a big deal. Our attention spans are too short for that. We want games today so we can stop caring about them next week.

The possibility of "later" is exactly what we're complaining about.

Look at PSN and their PSOne releases for crying out loud.
Well, since I try my best to avoid relativism, the lack of quality or consistency found in other comparable services is kind of a sidebar.

With the poor state of the VC i've dug my SNES out again from storage, since NoA seems content to let the VC wither away. So what do you guys think are some games that won't be released on VC? Might be worth keeping the ol' SNES around after all.

I grabbed these out of storage with it:

Chrono Trigger
Secret of Evermore
Secret of Mana
Soul Blazer
Earthbound

The last two are technically eligible, but who are we kidding. We're never going to get them. I tried to find SMRPG and Illusion of Gaia but they both seem to be missing. I hope not permanently. Actually, FF2 and 3 were missing as well. I hope my brother didn't lose them or something when he borrowed my old snes stuff.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Secret of Evermore since it's decidedly not a high-profile title for S-E in terms of prestige. We got ActRaiser, so... yeah.

At the rate we're going it'll come in what, 2011?

We'll get it after Square-Enix runs out of games that people aren't asking for, such as Rad Racer and The 7th Saga and Final Fantasy Mystic Quest. :(

The 3-D Battles of WorldRunner was actually interesting and is worth playing... it would be nice to see that one go up, anyway.

Huh? That makes no sense... Dark Legacy was Legends with slightly better graphics, twice as many levels, and twice as many characters. The gameplay was pretty much exactly the same. What was there to dislike? The rebalanced experience system that gives you less XP for weaker enemies as you level up past them, so that instead of being able to level up consistently everywhere you need to go to the next area to level up best (or find a Black Death and steal a level from it with the halo)? That you can't see your character stats ingame, unlike Legends on N64, can't sell every item in your inventory in GC Dark Legacy, again unlike Legends on N64, and Dark Legacy for GC crashes sometimes? Annoying points, but they don't hurt it that much. Oh, and there was the new bonus level system too... unlike Legends on N64 where it saves how many coins you've gotten in bonus levels so if you get half of them in one try when you get back the next time you only need to get the other half, in Dark Legacy you need to get every coin in the level in one try or you need to start all over... it makes unlocking the bonus characters MUCH harder and more frustrating.

... Yeah, half of those are bad changes. But even so, the base gameplay is the exact same Gauntlet Legends fun, so I would say Dark Legacy is better than the original. Some of the new levels and areas are really cool...

I would actually expect Soul Blazer more than any other game on that list. Quintet games are clearly open; after all, look at Actraiser. Granted, it will probably be quite some time until we get it.

I really want E.V.O: The Search For Eden, though.

Yeah I'll place my money on Secret of Evermore having a good shot at showing up on the virtual console at some point. At least over many many other Square games. Secret of Mana is headin' for the DS remake or 'enhancement' itself.

I remember playing King of Monsters when I was younger, but other than that, I'm drawing a blank on the game.

One on one fighting game, a la Street Fighter, except movement isn't confined to a single horizontal plane. Each side picks their oversized monster of choice and uses the city environment to pummel their opponent.

I'm surprised Major League Eating isn't out yet, it was advertised (and was said to be available) on the ESPN eating competition on the 4th. Kinda kills the whole point of advertising if you can't buy the game. Not that anyone really cares about Major League Eating, of course.

King of Monsters is pretty lame, and I was kind of dreading the wasted week it would bring. I wish Break In had come out too, just to get two upcoming games that I don't care about out of the way at the same time. As it stands, with three weeks left in the month, we should get a TG-16 game weekly now. Chances are Star Parodier will be last, if only to make us suffer. The question is, will the TG games be all we get for the next three weeks, or will they also be accompanied by mediocre NeoGeo games? Ninja Commando is still in the wings...
