Official bitching about Hudson abandoning VC support. [VC/WiiWare = lost cause]

I'm currently trying to compile lists of games to release. This basically involves going through entire system libraries and subtracting what's already released, and for generality I'm not making any assumptions based on licenses or peripherals. What I'm finding is that what's left is pretty much what we are getting. Yes, there are a few good ones left (we can play list wars, but as I've noticed when when some of these do release the majority still isn't happy) but much like last week was a little nicer the crap-to-gold ratio seems pretty spot-on. My early prediction that by the end of this year there will be almost no (that doesn't mean absolutely no) great titles left seems to be accurate. Either we need new systems or the slowing of the VC is pretty much an acceptable outcome.

Some of my preliminary findings: the SNES and the N64 are the most under-released consoles given their VC lifespan so that's where the majority of the "Most Wanted" lie. These are both under 10% of total library released. The most released is the TurboGrafx at about 45% of the total library, TurboCD isn't quite so high. The NES is hovering around 10%, Nintendo itself has extremely few releasable titles left (by last count is was 8 without licenses or peripherals IIRC). NeoGeo is progressing along nicely but of course the bulk is simply the yearly fighting sequels, it is close to 15%. As for Sega, the Genesis looks pretty exhausted and the biggest titles left are also rated or released in other territories so I think that will be cleaned out in the next few months. The Master System is releasing very slowly for being so simple and having a lot of games.

Anyway I'd like to see some more wish-lists, to better gauge what the VC is left to work with. I'd imagine if something like Gley Lancer and Fantasy Zone were lukewarmly recieved then much of the list wars fluff isn't going to be substantial enough to keep people interested even if those types of games do release.

Here's what I see:

NES: Mega Man (series), Castlevania 3, Contra, Final Fantasy, StarTropics 2
SNES: MM7, MMX (series), SMRPG, SMW2:YI, EB, KSS, Tetris Attack, Misc unlikely Square stuff
N64: DK64, Majora's Mask, Misc unlikely Rare stuff
GEN: Sonic and Knuckles, Shining Force 2, Phantasy Star 4
SMS: ???
NEO: Wind Jammers

Anything else you guys can come up with?

NES - Mother
SMS - Alf, The Ninja Youtube, Phantasy Star, Golden Axe Warrior Youtube, Zillion, Psycho Fox Youtube Tool-Assisted. Surprisingly only 3 games for SMS have been released. It's highly under utilized. I guess they dont want to showcase that some of teh SMS ports were far superior to the NES versions.

I could probably list some more for GEN but I'm running short on time.

They really went out of their way to not use 'beer' in the Pong Toss description.

Anyone buy that though? It sounds and looks pretty bad, but I'm kind of interested. Might be interesting for a party? I mean, then I don't have to buy cups =/

An organization pressed the developer's hand actually and they didn't have much choice but to remove it.

Nintendo, you mean, not "an organization".

In terms of good titles, there is still a lot of material left to mine. The major problem is that a lot of the low hanging fruit has already been plucked. The Genesis 1st party library may almost be exhausted (although not really, I count twelve titles already released in Japan that can be brought to North America with relative ease), but 3rd party titles are virtually unscathed. And that's what it looks like Sega is moving on to now - see Splatterhouse 2 & Street Fighter 2: Championship Edition this month in Japan, Forgotten Worlds & Strider rated for PAL territories, and Earthworm Jim & the other Interplay titles scheduled for this year in North America. Companies may have to put a bit more effort into releases (and I think it's an open question if they want to put in that effort), but there is still a lot of gold, and silver, and rupees to be had. I'm looking forward to the results of your research though - should be interesting.

You may think you know, but you have no idea~

You're enjoying this, aren't you? >_>

Though if the game is out in Japan, I can't see what might be keeping it from a North American release, unless Square-Enix's American branch specifically are preventing it...though what end that might serve I have no idea.

That isn't the reason.

Am i really the only one who realizes Nintendo is intentionally holding back releasing any big titles until they can GET more people to resume downloading?

People who are out of storage space are most likely NOT taking the "clean your fridge" approach and unless it's a HUGE title are not going to download. That's an IMMENSELY wasted opportunity for Nintendo as most people who don't download within the 1st week of release aren't going to.

With Wiiware out now it's only making the situation even worse, and don't expect to see any N64 titles released until after a solution is announced

Sorry, I can't tell you right now.

There is a N64 title being worked on.

Nintendo may one day release an N64 game on the VC? You're a real Nostra-fucking-damus, aren't you?

Samurai Shodown II on VC next monday.

Wall, NJ – July 31, 2008 – SNK PLAYMORE USA CORPORATION, the U.S. publishing arm of the SNK PLAYMORE CORPORATION, announced today the forthcoming release of SAMURAI SHODOWN II for Wii™ Virtual Console™ on August 4th 2008.

Regarded as one of SNK’s greatest games ever produced, SAMURAI SHODOWN II successfully integrated a brand new, dynamic fighting system that was years ahead of its time. The fighting system introduced players to several new offensive and defensive maneuvers including the ability to roll both forwards and backwards, ducking to avoid high attacks, hopping to avoid low attacks and the implementation of a ‘parry’ system that would allow players to deflect incoming attacks at the last second if performed successfully. In addition to the newly revised fighting system, SAMURAI SHODOWN II also features 16 unique playable characters, hidden bosses, a two player versus mode and of course all of the wonderful translations fans have grown to love.

SAMURAI SHODOWN II will be available for Wii™ Virtual Console™ for only 900 Wii™ Points and has been rated “T” for Teen by the ESRB.

Damn, bad timing for me seeing as SC just came out for which I picked up a stick. SS II is also slated to come out for the 360 but then online will probably be rather worthless for it anyway (meanwhile emulation on the VC release will be tons better). Hmm..

Well, looks like I'm finally going to pick up a NeoGeo game, nice to see SS2 come out so quickly.

Hell, this is going to be the first VC game I buy since...Doremi Fantasy, I think? And if Strongbad comes out on Monday as well, it'll be my first WiiWare game. Two Wii downloads in one day, it'd be like the days of...last year.

Plattchen and Wild West Guns are confirmed (According to the developers) so I don't think you'll get Strong Bad.

Wild West Guns looks interesting, so that's fine.

That would probably be all of Monday, then: Plattchen, Wild West Guns, and Samurai Shodown 2. In fact, we can probably guess that August 11 will be Break In, Star Parodier, and hopefully Strong Bad. It could be a strong couple of weeks for the Shop Channel, especially if we get Ys the week after that.

Fuck yes!
I knew I should've waited and for once I did good :))

Guess it'll just be a matter of a couple of weeks until it hits EU VC.

And a big fat thank you to Capndrake for the heads up when I was on the fence about SS1!

Also, I've got Ninja Commando!
I like but...
does anyobdy remember if the AES title had that annoying screen tearing in the upper middle of the screen as well? :-/

Also, what's the point in choosing the girl? Am i missing something or shit just can't do shit for whatever reason (she's basically missing all the side attacks etc.).

But what about Samurai Shodown Anthology that's coming in a bit? Why just get SS2?

While you may be able to get the entire series for $30 on a disc instead of, what, $63 for all 7 games ($9 x 7, if they all make it to VC)....but there's just this nice convenience feature of Virtual Console of being able to just pick the game off the system's memory and it's in there without having to put in a disc. Lazy? Yes, but a nice feature nonetheless.

There's also the fact that some of the collections SNK has been doing have had lousy emulation, while the VC's emulation is about as close as you can get. Apparently the Wii SNK Classics collection that just came out had better emulation, so this may not be an issue anymore, but it's worth considering.

Plus, if you just want one SS game, it's cheaper to pay $9 than $30. Most people consider SS2 to be the best of the series, so I could just buy it alone.

I use my Wii all the time, but I seldomly ever put actual game discs inside it. What does that tell you?

Yeah, I'll take my SS2 on the Virtual Console, please.

Isn't pretending to be an insider and riling up threads by keeping "mysterious secrets" when you're really just a register harlot at the local EB a bannable offence or something?

I can't imagine someone with a tag like "Aint knowing shit" is going to be taken seriously.

That is going to be really hard for me not to get SamSho2, even though I know I should wait for the anthology this fall...

I've wanted a copy of SamSho2 for the past 15 years, and this is the first chance I have to get it

HOLY MOTHER FUCK WE'RE FINALLY GETTING YS BOOK I & II!?

ZOOOOOOMG

This calls for a thread title change! Dragona, where art thou!?

Well, the only way they're going to get more people to buy VC releases is to let people know about them - and let people know the damn service exists. And I don't mean by sending out a flimsy piece of PR the morning the games are released.

Why NOA doesn't market VC to the masses is beyond me...

Anyone know why so many NeoGeo games are being crammed down our throats lately? It seems like every week for the past two months or so at least one NG game has been released on VC.

Also, if we have to be in NeoGeo mode right now, where's my damn Twinkle Star Sprites???

off topic but certainly of passing interest to wii owners, but has anyone seen the kellogg's smart start commercial in which playing wii sports is being presented as one of the three or four activities the women in the commercial are using to "make their heart stronger?" starting a new thread to mention it and how bizarre it is would have made it seem as if i was some dope celebrating nintendo's proliferation into that culture, and i didn't want to shit up the front page with a new thread in that vein, but holy shit at how wacky that is.

Sam Showdown ? Damn time to get me some Wii Points. :lol

to be fair its coming on XBL as well and ill be buying it there too

Not bloody likely, Star Parodier was "confirmed" two weeks ago and hasn't come out yet.

FWIW, this will likely be better emulated then anthology.

SS Tenka itself justifies anthology anyways.
