Official bitching about Hudson abandoning VC support. [VC/WiiWare = lost cause]

jesus, just put blast corps up. for the love of god. i want to put my n64 in the closet but i can't until you do.

..and how are they going to manage that? It's a Rare IP and they can't put it up without their say-so.

Great to see Rockman 3. Personally, it's my favourite game in the entire Mega Man series, though it's probably too easy for its own good. Still, it's got Proto Man! And the Doc Robots! And Proto Man! And awesome music! And...well, Proto Man!

This particular version of Xanadu was always a curious one for me. Not sure if this is the updated one though(which I remember looking awesome in this ancient issue of GameFan). Could be plain jane Xanadu though..hmm. Now that's a rather tough game to get into

The PC-Engine/TG16 port of Cadash is a mixed bag. Unlike the Genesis version this one includes all four playable characters. Unfortunately graphically it's a few steps back. Rather than attempt to make it look close to the arcade version they chose to re-do the graphics. Interesting idea I admit but overall it still doesn't look that great. Also all of the areas are broken up into multiple sections(while the original arcade/gen games are seamless)

Even so, because it actually includes all four characters, it's by far the better of the two ports... though the arcade version (present in the Xbox and PC (but not PS2) versions of Taito Legends 2) is of course the best. The Genesis version really isn't worth it... I got it, but that was only because I didn't really know anything about the game. It's okay, but knowing what I do now I'd probably have passed it up.

Anyway, the main problem with Genesis and TG16 Cadash is that there's no saving (no battery, passwords, nothing), no continues (just that one full health refill you start with), and the game's a challenging action-RPG. With saving it'd be more fun, really... it's still good, but frustrating to have to start all over all the time!

Oh, and it's 4 player in the arcade version, but only two on Genesis and TG16.

Oh, yeah - forgot that one (probably because I really didn't like it very much...)

I was going to say "you remembered all three actually worth owning"... :)

Maybe not completely true, but SNES Dracula X definitely is a lot worse than the other three 16-bit games, for sure.

Eh? You get 2 credits in the Genesis version(4 if you start a 2 player game and kill off the second player) which is more than enough to complete the game(you can also purchase elixirs which act as extra credits). The TG16 version has a continue code and neither game has a time limit. Also I'm not 100% on this but I'm fairly sure everything seems does less damage as well.

Seriously though Cadash is the kind of game you play to finish without continuing. It's actually rather short(less than 30 minutes) and depending on your class you can get far with little trouble. It also helps to stock up on herbs since they act as free hits(even when you have next to no HP left)

I will also put forth the argument that while The TG16 version has all four characters the Genesis version is still the better game because it plays closer to the arcade original. The TG16 version on the other hand suffers slightly from not quite perfect mechanics and despite the changes in balance the Priest still dominates the game for free(her barrier spell is game-breaking IMO)

One other thing. The Genesis/Arcade version tells the tale in charming broken english. The TG16 version? You're treated to your typical Working Designs translation, bad jokes and all.

The four player mode really doesn't seem to be worth the bother from what wiki is saying. Four players sure but you're all forced to share the same screen despite playing on two cabinets? Ugh.

EDIT: Reminder everyone. All arcade games should be played with the mindset to get as far as you can and/or get the highest score without continuing. That principle doesn't extend quite so well with console games so hey feel free to push further by beating the game without dying, getting hit, etc.

EDIT x2: Strike that. You can split up into parties of two in Cadash Arcade four player mode. That's what I get for using wikipedia as a reference.

You're right, you do get two continues on the Genesis. Even so, it's very much abmormal for an action-RPG to not have any kind of saving... it definitely makes it more frustrating. You're right that with time you eventually get good enough to get farther, and it isn't that long, but it does make it harder... particularly on TG-16 where without a code you can't continue.

They removed the two more interesting, better characters... that alone is enough for me to say that the TG-16 version is better. And I don't really mind Working Designs translations... but yeah, it is fun on Genesis too. If you could play as all four characters, I'd probably call it the better port. But you can't.

True, the ideal for an arcade game is beating it on one credit... but even so... I know limited credits forces you to play better, but having to start a home game over constantly is very frustrating. Even with its drawbacks, I'd probably prefer infinite (or at least more) continues. Just do something like some newer shmups (Ikaruga, etc) do and reward the player for not dying, with point resets upon death and such...

I didn't give Ogre Battle much of a chance due to Square-Enix and all, but great to see it appear at least for Japan. :o That's one example where a game being on VC instead of its original incarnation will automatically improve it for me several times over--some of the late-game maps could take two hours or more and practically beg for a suspend feature.

Will also obviously buy Mega Man 3 when it's released here, as it's the one NES entry I haven't played and has earned however much acclaim.

Thank you all for recommending Super Dodge Ball. Its very fun.

I also got the other day...

Sin and Punishment
Lost Winds
Secret of Mana
Bonks Adventure
Pac Man

Which is the recommended play-style for Rotohex? Pointing the Wii Remote, I thought, would be seamless and be the preferred method, but the pointing, oddly, is sluggish. The NES-style isn't much better, using the d-pad to navigate through that cube is frustrating. I loved the concept when I first saw it, but this is a roadblock so far.

Cubello can be very, very fun if you work yourself into a groove and try to make cool eliminations.

Bough Orbient, haven't tried it yet.

EU got it for the update this week, so I'm hoping we'll see it on Monday in the US. It's been far too long since I've played that gem.

Nintendo of America should go like "Halloween doesn't have to end just yet!" and put CV III on there or something,

I played Ogre Battle: March of the Black Queen as a kid but only through rentals so I never really put in a lot of quality time into it, that would be a definite purchase for me if it came out tomorrow on VC. I've even got 2500 Points just sitting there waiting to be used.

Nintendo should throw Drac X and CIII up on the same day.

That would be awesome, but unlikely. Franchise-sharing games would never show up on the same day.

If only there were a chance it could be the Japanese version of CV3. Everyone deserves that version.

AAAALLLLIIIIEEEENNNN CCCCRRRUUUSSSSHHH!!!!

About damn time. Now i really hope the day at work will go fast. I'm an Alien Crush freak!

SMS Space Harrier is SOOOOOO bad... recommended for nostalgia whores only. It falls under the "very lo-tech arcade port" category. Just an FYI. Of course I am a nostalgia whore and it was one of the first 3 or 4 games we owned for our SMS, so who knows where I'll fall. :D

Me too :D

Plus, Alien Crush! Great week.

hahaha i didn't even notice it was the SMS version, ouch. I guess I sort of assumed it'd be the superior TG16 version. Space Harrier 2 GEN is already on VC, and that's the best of all of them.

to be fair, it was a great game on the SMS back in the day. and hard as all shit. but yeah, in 2008 with access to every other superior version in some form or another, I'd have a tough time objectively saying that it's worth $5.

but it definitely was a great game back then, hence why it still hits the nostalgia button for most of us SMS owners.

Just wondering...why are WiiWare games being discussed in this thread? Isn't this the VC thread? Doesn't WiiWare have it's own thread? Why, NeoGAF, why?

Alien Crush may be cool and all, but it's not doing much to distract me from the fact that EU just got Castlevania III and we didn't.

To be honest, I don't see the point in having a separate WiiWare/VC thread. There should be a stickied thread with a properly updated OP covering both services.

It's because Nintendo forgot about updating the VC!! We get only one game a week wich is clearly unnacceptable. Bare minimum should be 2. Wiiware and VC are 2 services and Nintendo sees this as one. Talk about not understanding its customer.

I like being able to read through the WiiWare thread and not have to go through endless posts crying about their favorite NES/SNES game not on the VC. Please don't merge the threads.

I wonder how good Alien Crush is going to be.

I'm super excited but at the same time i'm worried. Alien Crush the original is STILL the best pinball ever made (at least on consoles) even after all those years. Will they able to top that really?

What a burn for VC enthusiasts. Did the Genesis Harrier already hit VC?

Space Harrier 2 was one of the earliest VC games, and not a very good conversion at that.

The 32X Space Harrier would be sweet, but who knows whether they'll bother with that add-on.

This may just be blind nostalgia speaking, but I never found Space Harrier to be bad on the SMS. Choppy yeah, but not bad.
