Yes! Star Tropics! That makes me happy.

But...

Time to delete a channel to make room. :-(

The TG16 version of Operation Wolf was only released in Japan, so the ESRB rating is probably for the NES version. It should also be noted that it didn't require the Zapper to play, though it was compatible with it.

When Amir0x was asking me and Snah what VC games we wanted, I picked Bubble Bobble, Military Madness, and Alien Soldier.

But the whole time, I felt like there was an NES game that I should be seeing, that I would reeeeealy want to get. Ninja Gaiden II? Sure, but I've had plenty of that kind of game recently. Castlevania? Played it so many times, don't need to again on my Wii. Kirby's Adventure? Nah, not really.

I racked my brain for so long, searching and relooking over the lists. WHAT NES GAME IS IT, I wondered? I DON'T SEE IT, BUT I CAN FEEL IT THERE!

Now I know why. Because it's releasing on Monday, two days too late for me. :'(

This is easily going to be one of the best VC release weeks ever.

StarTropics is one of my favorite games of all time and KoF 94 is just fucking awesome.

While this week's selections are awesome, I have a slight worry that Nintendo is scaling back VC releases as a whole, based on this, Europe's two single release weeks in a row, and Japan's significantly smaller January schedule.

But I'll just push that to the back of my head for now and hope it's not true.

You can bet on Smash Bros. 64 just before Brawl is released. Not to mention they still have some other big titles that aren't released on the system yet. I didn't expect Super Metroid, Super Mario Bros. 3, Sin & Punishment etc. that fast though.

Nice for a 2-game week. I love StarTropics, and have exactly 500 points sitting in my account, but I'm tempted to gift it to a friend who hasn't played it and spend 5 minutes hooking up my NES to play the cart myself.

When Smash 64 gets released on VC I will have no real reason to hook up my N64 ever again (except maybe for the occasional Majora's Mask session, or if I reaaally want to play some DK64). It should have already come out. Unfortunately, I still haven't figured out how to get my Wii online at college, so I'll have to wait awhile for that day even if it does come out in February.

Oh, there's no doubt that they've still got plenty to release. They've got the majority of the first party NES stuff out there, but there's still a great deal of first party SNES and N64 stuff to go. And if they'd just start getting more third party stuff out there (particularly US developed stuff), then the NES, SNES, N64, and Genesis libraries would have enough content for years.

But there's entirely too much unreleased stuff on the ESRB site alone to justify a two release week. If this is just a one time thing, then no problem, but I don't want to see it becoming a trend.

At any rate, StarTropics!

Howdy hey for Star Tropics. Points are set aside now.

I haven't touched it since my childhood NES days but I still have the Nintendo Power with all of those drawings of the characters in it. They were kinda ugly...

It feels bizarre that, when Star Tropics hits, my three most recent VC purchases will have been NES games. I mean, NES only made up 22.22% of my VC buys as of December 31st (prior to Star Tropics), 20.45% as of December 30th (prior to Bubble Bobble), and 19.05% as of December 2nd (prior to The Dynastic Hero and Zanac). On Monday it'll be at 23.91%, equal to SNES, and that's just odd to me considering that out of those two systems I don't particularly care for one and love the other.

Jeez, you have a statistical problem or what? :lol

Okay, somebody sell me on StarTropics. I know next to nothing about it.

Startropics is like Zelda, only set in modern times and with a heavier emphasis on jumping and less of an emphasis on Puzzle solving. Interesting combat, decent music, good length, neat story, great ending all work together in this much overlooked classic by Nintendo.

No prob Jiggy, just joking. Your posts on the Smash thread have been fun to read!

On another note I bought Megaman 2 yesterday, super awesome game!

I love numbers, as a result, I love Jiggy.

Now what's this with Nintendo cutting back on their number of releases? It's not like they're not sitting on a HUGE PILE OF GAMES or anything!

I suspect it may simply be a post-Christmas lull; people are going to be distracted by whatever they got for Christmas that perhaps much of what gets released now will be overlooked.

We'll see, though; I may well be wrong.

Wow!!
A dated as hell adventure game and an obsolete fighter!

Shitty week.

Rather than go into details as to why neither game is worth your money I'll just be lazy and list games that are better...

Instead of Startropics get: Landstalker, any Zelda you haven't already picked up, Beyond Oasis, either Neutopia(or both!), Dragon's Curse, Monster World, hell even freaking Light Crusader is better....and that's just picking from the VC library!
You could also wait for Zoda's Revenge, which is also a much better game(even if it does slap you with an annoying "choose the right path" puzzle early on).

Instead of KoF 94' get: ...Too many fighters to count actually. Hell you could snag KoF XI for $15. For $6 more you get the best KoF ever! Can't go wrong with that no sir.

Jiggy, you never cease to amaze me.

Somebody give this man the tag he clearly deserves.

Funny thing is I already bought all of those--except for Light Crusader, but I guess I can compensate for that since I bought both Wonder Boy and The Dynastic Hero. >_> (Also no VC Ocarina of Time, but I have the superior GC disc for that.)

That said, I actually do agree that all of those are better than Star Tropics (or at least what I remember of Star Tropics), but ST's still good and worth a buy. :D

His point was, on the farm, you don't have any pre-set area where you're supposed to grow crops: and of the territory within the farm can be used for whatever you'd like.

Thanks. Exactly what i was saying.

Did endeavor grant me a Wii? Eventually, it did. With this very money jar I would have bought a Wii sooner if aught were in my power to do.

But I could not. 'Twas my meager lot in this life...

Now for some goddamned Super Mario Galaxy! (yeah yeah VC is awesome blah).

I've been waiting to play Star Tropics for at least 15 years. Monday will be the big day.

Star Tropics is incredibly superior to Landstalker, if only for the fact that its controls and platforming work. And Zoda's Revenge is a sad piece of shit compared to the original.

Star Tropics is sort of like an attempt to clone The Legend of Zelda's gameplay using a different background story.

Is that bad? Naaah.

I've always been a handheld gamer first, and a couple things have been troubling me regarding VC.

First of all, why no handheld systems on VC yet? Off the top of my head I can think of games I'd buy on VC from GB, GBC, GG, and maybe NGPC.

Secondly - and this really bugs me because it's not likely to happen at all - why is there no VC on the DS yet? DS could easily handle NES, SNES, Genesis, and most TG16. It could also handle the above-mentioned handhelds. I'm sure piracy would be a concern, but they could just let you link your Nintendo DS to your VC account, then sell a DS VC cart with some storage space on it, and allow you to send games to it from your Wii or download them directly from your DS (this would even allow VC purchases to be made by people who don't own a Wii.)

While I wouldn't frame it in such harsh terms, I agree that StarTropics is much superior to its sequel. I've never quite put my finger on why though - when pressed I waffle between three reasons: the original does a much better job at obscuring its linearity, the addition of diagonal control leaves the combat less crisp, and the puzzles/dungeon design is weaker in the sequel. Those answers, even when taken in unison, don't seem adequate. StarTropics seems vibrant and original; Zoda's Revenge seems to be instilled with none of the original's heart & soul.

StarTropics was one of my first adventure games, so I also wonder how much of my affection for the game is sentimental. But I've gone back to it years afterwards and it still holds up well, and I did play Zelda, Zelda II, and Castlevania II before it, so it isn't like I had no point of comparison during my first playthrough.

Curious to see what they do with the final puzzle in chapter four . . . no solution can match what they did in the original, but I hope they at least force the player to
quit the game and go to facisimilie of the original letter in the instruction manual.

Where did you get this info? Nintendo doesn't reveal VC games early..

Jsnake has a rep @ Nintendo of America who gives him the information for his website (so that he has advance warning for reviews?). He's gotten the last seven - eight weeks correct in North America the Friday before their release. If that's the case, Nintendo World Report should be able to get the info ahead of time as well, although I wouldn't go around blabbing it here @ NeoGaf if you'd want to continue to receiving it. :lol

But do Landstalker's dungeons have instant death rooms?

Heh . . . I would count that instant death room as one of my favorite moments in my early gaming life . . . plus it stands as a wonderful cautionary tale against
greed. Come on, did you think the game was just going to continue giving you medicine bottles forever?
You start each dungeon with three lives anyway, what's the big deal giving up one at altar of pure shock value. I'll defend that instant death room til the day I die. :lol

I have fond memories of StarTropics, can't wait till it hits Europe. Its better than a lot of those games you mentioned PepsimanVsJoe.

Star Tropics is really and truly an awful, awful game.

It's right up there with Kid Icarus and the NES Metroid for "games that GAF hypes but shouldn't."

And Zelda, too. Ancient shit.

Super Mario Bros. is also outdated crap that should not be played by anybody but nostalgic fools.

I've had a student jokingly call me Mike Jones at the end of class and I just realized why I knew that name. Thanks.

Cause he's the best rapper ever or 'cause he's the lead character of StarTropics? :D

This next week looks excellent! StarTropics is a great, tough as balls game, even though the control scheme is really stiff and takes some getting used to. Still looking forward to Shining Force 2, Ys Book 1 and 2, and Dragon Slayer.

It's time for another round of "First Party NES Stuff". Here's what's left:

Un-releasable:
Popeye (Licenced)
Slalom (Rare)
RC-Pro Am (Rare)
Anticipation (Licenced)
Tetris (Licenced)
Cobra Triangle (Rare)
Barker Bill's Trick Shooting (Licenced)
Pin*Bot (Licenced)
Snake Rattle 'n' Roll (Rare)
Tetris 2 (Licenced)

Peripherals (unlikely):
Wild Gunmen (Zapper)
Duck Hunt (Zapper)
Hogan's Alley (Zapper)
Stack-Up (ROB)
Gyromite (ROB)
Gumshoe (Zapper)
To the Earth (Zapper)
Short Order / Eggsplode (Power Pad)

Unlikely for other reasons:
Dr. Mario (WiiWare installment)

Games that might actually come out:
Golf
Donkey Kong 3
Clu Clu Land
Kung Fu
10-Yard Fight
Pro Wrestling (ESRB)
Vegas Dream
Super Spike V'Ball (Technos)
Nintendo World Cup (Technos)
Yoshi's Cookie (ESRB)
StarTropics 2

In my opinion, Clu Clu Land and StarTropics 2 are the final remaining first-party titles of substance for the NES. This pretty much means that in the first year of the VC, Nintendo has burned through their entire NES library.

There are also only 10 releasable SNES games left in the first-party library, and 14 in the N64 library. I also have six non-localized first-party releses that could be released locally without too much effort (Devil World, Mario & Wario, Mario's Super Picross, F-Zero X Expansion, Wrecking Crew 98, and Mario Excite Bike).

I for one see two possibilities on a go-forward basis: a fairly strong shift to third-party games, or a reduction in game releases coinciding with WiiWare releases accelerating.
