It's not clear to me who has the licence/publication rights for either, but there's no reason to specifically believe that they are unreleasable.

[pretty big list]
In my opinion, Clu Clu Land and StarTropics 2 are the final remaining first-party titles of substance for the NES. This pretty much means that in the first year of the VC, Nintendo has burned through their entire NES library.
SonicMegaDrive said:And Zelda, too. Ancient shit.
Super Mario Bros. is also outdated crap that should not be played by anybody but nostalgic fools.
Somnid said:People kept ragging that Nintendo was slow to release games but they did burn through their first party stuff at a brisk pace. I'd imagine you'd see a similar situation for Hudson and Sega. VC isn't going to get nursed for 5 years, and unless they start up some new systems they will completely and utterly exhaust everything by the end of this year.
The ToDo list:
-Finish up current lineups
-Start support for Lightgun games (perhaps a cursor overlay in conjunction with Zapper)
-Get the western publishers on board
-More "import" titles
-More 3rd party systems, 1st party portables
-DS connectivity?
I don't know much about what Hudson and Sega have left, but I can't see Nintendo getting through everything they've got left in a year. Star Fox, Earthbound, Majora's Mask, Kirby Super Star, Kirby's Dreamland 3, Kirby 64, Yoshi's Island, Super Mario RPG, Star Tropics 2, 1080 Snowboarding, Excitebike 64, Mario Kart, Pilotwings, Pilotwings 64, Crystalis, Pokemon Puzzle League, Adventures of Lolo 2, Adventures of Lolo 3... (This is ignoring stuff like Mother 1, Duck Hunt, or Super Mario All-Stars that may or may not have much of a chance.) That's 18 games already--if they only released one every three weeks, it would take slightly more than a year.Somnid said:People kept ragging that Nintendo was slow to release games but they did burn through their first party stuff at a brisk pace. If they wanted you to buy it, they'd make it available, the DS version is fucking impossible to find.SonicMegaDrive said:Tetris (Licenced) - They have a licence...but I'm sure they'd rather you buy the DS version.
cartman414 said:Wow, fightin' words. I've been in the group that finds them (and NES Metroid) aged, and even I wouldn't go that far. But yeah, while Startropics IMO doesn't exactly look shabby, it doesn't look like a must play on the level of, say, Kirby's Avalanche.

I don't really quite understand that, myself. If I have the desire to play a classic game, I'd rather be able to download and play it right away then wait for Nintendo to release it at their discretion. If Nintendo had released Smash 64 on the Virtual Console on Dec 3rd like they should've done, for example, I could've enjoyed playing it throughout the holiday and for the rest of this month off and on with Melee in anticipation of Brawl. I don't have any of my old systems anymore for various reasons, so the Virtual Console allows me to play all those old games I have fond memories of, or else give games a go that I otherwise would never have played.Ranger X said:Wow. Some people can finally see that the VC is going too fast? Been a fucking while i'm pitching this point of view left and right on GAF. At the pace it's going it's like they don't want the service to have regular updates for more than 2 years from now. (and 2 years is a maximum imo)
But yeah, the legitimate way for Nintendo to continue releasing games each week would be to push for more system support. Game Boy, Game Boy Color, even Game Boy Advance are obvious choices, as well as a multitude of import games that have yet to come out here. Also Wiiware releases should keep the tide of downloaded games coming. Shame that Wii's onboard storage is so small though, or else Saturn games may have been a possibility. At least I think so -- I'm not sure what it would take to emulate Saturn or how big the games are...I really like to have new games every week. I wouldn't like to have less updates so they gotta find a solution. More publications, more support, have some Master System and MSX.
SonicMegaDrive said:Yeah, I was being sarcastic. It's loosus. I like to tell him how he likes to hear it. I always aim to please.
Startropics, Kid Icarus, and Zelda are all fine, and are all very playable today. Unless you're spoiled.
No shit?
Did it go out of print already?
Then again, I can't seem find a copy of Planet Puzzle League, so maybe the demand is just way up there.

When I tell my casual gamer friends who just got Wiis about the Virtual Console, they all get really excited until they realize that tons of the games they want to download just aren't up on the service yet. Casual Wii owners aren't checking the internet every week to keep up on Virtual Console releases; they'll likely just forget about it. Nintendo, if anything, should be doing their utmost to get these games on the service as quickly as possible so that people can actually download the games they want to as they please, and then Nintendo should start upgrading the channel itself [along with releasing Everyone's Nintendo Channel in the States already, come on] to make it easier to get recommendations. The 'Recommended Games' section is a joke, because it's basically just four random games with no real context on why they're up there. Either through the Shop Channel or the Everyone's Nintendo Channel, there needs to be data presented along the lines of 'users who downloaded this also downloaded...', or 'users who liked this game also liked...', or even the ability for users to rate games on a star scale or something of that nature.
I'm pretty sure someone already suggested such things in this thread already, but I think it's worth repeating...

There are 65 titles I'm holding out for, just counting slightly likely stuff (i.e. no translated Fire Emblems, no Square-Enix anything, nothing with a license).Somnid said:Well obviously somebody will always be waiting for "Title X"

STAR TROPICS AND KOF94
WOOOOOO
You're right in that the Virtual Console is based more on current videogame retail trends than anything else, like iTunes for example. Frankly I'm not exactly fond of that model though, because it makes it incredibly difficult to find games a year down the road unless it's something incredibly popular like Halo or Pokemon; for the most part retailers have moved on and no longer stock it unless they still have some copies remaining from their initial shipment. Music isn't like this, and neither are movies, so I don't quite understand why it's the same way for games -- actually I do understand why, but I don't agree with the mentality. The big problem is that anything not 'current gen' is deemed obsolete, and with yearly upgrades of tons of different franchises even most games from a couple years ago aren't considered worth buying anymore by a good deal of consumers. I was kind of hoping that the Virtual Console would avoid this buying mantra, but obviously it has not.Ranger X said:Another thing that is good for them with regular updates is that they create a movement. They create an "habit" with gamers (mostly hardcore gamers should i say). The newly updated games will sell alot more in their first weeks than they will ever sell when they will sleep incognito in the sea of other titles already available. Pretty much work like a true retail game. Most the sales are done in the first 3 months. Even if it's available for YEARS after, the sales NEVER keep up.
If that were the case, I would think Nintendo would want to have started putting up VC games much, much faster to soften the impact of Wii Ware leeching away VC sales and vice versa.Benedict said:VC is only a stepping stone, the first step, before WiiWare will take over regular releases.
