Official bitching about Hudson abandoning VC support. [VC/WiiWare = lost cause]

Yup. I wonder if the uncensored code works on the Wii version. I can't check because I don't have another classic controller

It does, actually. Too bad there is no code for the subsequent games.

For RPGs, the 2 best choices as of now are Shining Force (Strategy RPG) and Breath of Fire 2, but Phantasy Star 2 is to hit JP VC this month and should hopefully make the jump over here soon, and we should hopefully be seeing Ys Book 1 and 2 soon. Also there are slight rumors we might be getting Warsong, another excellent underrated SRPG.
And don't forget Shining Force 2 is on its way also. :D

If the well is really running so dry, it's time to sign the western publishers already.

Eventually they will get desparated and have to start translating games like Fire Emblem.....right?

The NES is still missing a ton of great 3rd party games like Duck Tales and Rescue Rangers. I guess those are tied up in licensing hell so who knows.

Actually, someone at Capcom USA should get a hefty bonus if they can strike a deal with Disney to open up Capcom's Disney titles on the NES, SNES, and Genesis for Virtual Console release. They could offer Disney a cut, especially if they add the extra $1 like Konami did for TMNT. The deal would pave the way for a bunch of titles, most of which would be pretty good moneymakers - older gamers would purchase the titles thanks to nostalgia & younger gamers should flock to them as well. It helps that most of the games are pretty darn good too.

Any recommendations for three or four VC that look nice on HD? Thus far have Punch-Out, SSF2T, and Ice Hockey. Galaxy has gotten me back into the Wii but I want NEXT-GEN graphics. Have all the controllers.

I thought that Paper Mario looked suprisingly good on my Sharp HD tv.

What the hell? Star Tropics has one of the best stories on the NES, some great graphics, and creative gameplay. It's everything that Zelda 2 should have been.

Um...what?

StarTropics story is: "Your dad was captured by aliens. Go find him and have wacky adventures along the way."

Creative gameplay? Well aside from some admittedly clever puzzles in the overworld section all I see is a fairly substandard clone of better action adventure games.

Everything Zelda 2 should have been? That'd be great if Zelda 2 should have been an overrated chore of a game with boring combat, lame jumping puzzles, and ridiculously dull "step on every block to find the switch" locked rooms. Fortunately it isn't.

I loved the game back then when I traded Castlevania 3 for it because that game wounded my pride(final stage arghgh). I guess that's because Startropics demands nothing. It's an easy game that's incredibly friendly to gamers of mediocre skill level. You just don't go in expecting anything more than that.

I liked the way the story was presented in Star Tropics over Zelda 2. It was more ominous and foreboding...but then, I was just a little kid with a Nintendo Power.

What gets me is that I don't think the well is running dry. :/ Just among publishers who've already put stuff on VC, there are probably hundreds of games for the taking.

Capcom's got eleven Mega Man games and three Gargoyle's Quests, Konami has two more translated Goemon games and two more Castlevanias and several TMNT titles, Hudson has a metric ton of unreleased stuff for the TG16 and hasn't even begun releasing non-TG16 games (Super Bomberman, Bomberman 64, that SNES Bonk game, etc.), there are still nine more King of Fighters titles to go, plus all the Samurai Shodowns, and a bunch of other Neo Geo games in general, Factor 5 has three Turricans and they're all known to be waiting, Square-Enix has the Quintet games and stuff like EVO and 7th Saga (I'm not even going to pretend they'll ever release a FF game on VC unless it's named "Final Fantasy Mystic Quest," or a DQ), and then there's still Nintendo and Sega.

Nintendo really shouldn't have stuffed up the pipeline (assuming Capcom's claim that they wanted to put up all their Mega Man games right away and got shot down is accurate) as they've done. :/ There are usually months between a game getting released on VC and its sequel getting released, and considering how long some of these franchises went on, that's a serious issue... I could just see a VC update in October 2009 involving Mega Man 7 and King of Fighters '98.

Errrr . . . uncle, not dad. Are you quite sure you played StarTropics, PepsimanVsJoe? :P I'll just add that most stories sound pretty pedestrian when you boil it down to two sentences. The devil is in the details. And if you ever need help testing your gag reflex again, I'll be more than happy to oblige.

StarTropicssssssssssssssssssss

I remember I bought that game used and there was some part of the game that required a code that you found in the instruction manual or something. I didn't have the manual so I had to call the developer and spend eternity on the phone with their Tip Line (1.99 a minute no thank you) just to get that freaking code...

but man did I love that game.

I'm back after a month long ban for "snarking", and apparently bumped down to Junior status. I still don't know what I did. Here are the updates for the time i've missed (this weeks NA releases are included, they will be part of the normal weekly update I do too).

Games available in Europe and not North America: Mega Man (NES), Mega Man 2 (NES), Skate or Die! (NES), Mario's Super Picross (SNES), Vectorman (GEN/MD), Crack Down (GEN/MD), ESWAT: City Under Siege (GEN/MD)

Games available in North America and not Europe: The Legend of Kage (NES), Elevator Action (NES), Tecmo Bowl (NES), Milon's Secret Castle (NES), Lode Runner (NES), Star Soldier (NES), Adventure Island (NES), NES Play Action Football (NES), Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels (NES, it's no longer available in Europe), Ninja Gaiden II: The Dark Sword of Chaos (NES), Zanac (NES), Ghosts 'n Goblins (NES), StarTropics (NES), Romance of the Three Kingdoms IV: Wall of Fire (SNES), Metal Marines (SNES), Ecco Jr. (GEN), Eternal Champions (GEN), Alien Storm (GEN), Bravoman (TG16), Ordyne (TG16)

Australia/New Zealand is the same as Europe, except they have Axelay (SNES) instead of Super C.

They look good...I have Baseball Stars 2...It looks fantastic in HD...However, it's a 2d game and could pixelate on a really large tv...I've only played it on my 26", haven't tried it on my 57" yet.

ROCK ON NINTENDO! YOU ARE AWESOME!

They actually have a virtual letter with a virtual water bucket that reveals the code. so so so awesome.

oh man, I cant express enough how awesome this is, it is just so awesome.

StarTropics is just so good.

Europe can have them all, I just want MEGA MAN 1 AND 2!

The Ninja Gaiden games were some of the best looking NES games. Though you really should be buying Ninja Gaiden for its gameplay, not its graphics. Graphics don't matter, especially the graphics of an NES game from the late eighties.

Then again, you are AstroLad...

Personally, I prefer Ninja Gaiden II: The Dark Sword of Chaos to the original, but I'm probably in the minority on this one.

Sorry, I meant Neo-Geo. I'm far too weaksauce to take on Ninja Gaiden again, but I think I will pick up Baseball Stars.

Ha ha, right on. Irrespective of StarTropics' actual quality (hasn't played it yet), the notion of people preferring it to Zelda 2 because it gave them the Zelda I-type fix they complained they didn't get from Zelda 2 isn't too off the deep end.

Ouch. You seem to be on a roll here. Though I suppose I would be burned on the inside later on had I decided to trade off Castlevania 3.

Anybody who has downloaded StarTropics, how do they handle the password situation? With the original game the instruction booklet had a password you needed to use in the game, do they include it in the digital instruction booklet that VC games have?

Not if projected revenues don't exceed estimated expenses by a decent amount.

Well Reggie thought EBA would be a big hit so maybe all it really takes is someone to go drinking with Reggie. After a few shots, I'm sure even Earthbound will get the verification

The letter is in the built-in VC manual now, and you can click on an icon at the bottom to "dip" it and reveal the code. It's surprisingly cool.

I've played a good bit of StarTropics today, now on the last dungeon of the very long Chapter 3, and the game is even better than I remember. It's funny how I am recognizing a lot of the room designs and boss strategies.

ProTip: To use your magical items, like red potions and the snowman, pause the game and press down to see the second inventory. There's no indication on the screen or in the manual that you can do this, but it's absolutely necessary to play the game.

The VC manual does tell you that you can use the pause menu to get to those items. I only know because I was getting owned hardcore in a certain level without them. :/
Anyway, yeah. I'm in chapter 7 of Star Tropics after exactly four and a half hours of playing, and the difficulty spike here earns about three levels of "ouch" from me. Just crazy stuff considering how easy the first two chapters or so were.

I used to be able to share the connection with my two built-in ethernet ports to the airport express. I haven't been able to go online for several months now, and I have about 100k points to burn.

Crap.

Wait, why can't you go online? Did you lose the ability to share the connection, or are you dealing with a different setup?

(100,000 points? $1000... or did you mean $100? Either way, feel free to toss a few games in my direction if you can't spend it all yourself. Heh)

Oops. That's a typo. 10k points, heh.

Since I have a G5 Mac from 2005, it doesn't have an airport card built in or anything. So I bought an Airport Express station in 2006 to get online. I suddenly stopped going online last semester to focus on school and work and now I can't get the Mac to share the connection from the first port to the second. The second port recognizes that there's a plug in there, and the Wii picks up the Airport's signal, but I can't get the damn thing online.

I don't think the well is even close to running dry. I remember last March we had a Monday where we only got 1 game, and it was a very niche game (Romance of the Three Kingdoms IV: Wall of Fire). I think Nintendo wanted to make sure people didn't just pass over StarTropics (although i'm sure they could have thrown in one of their last generic NES sports games "Golf" in to make it 3).

I do hope that somehow Capcom and Disney make a deal so they can bring the Capcom made Disney titles to the VC. Disney got back the video game rights to their IPs a few years ago (choosing to publish them themselves instead of letting others), so they don't have to deal with other companies.

Well, due to an unfortunate accident, I accidentally bought KOF'94 on the VC yesterday. I was curious about the block requirements, so I clicked on the initial purchase screen, and then somehow I clicked the buy button again when I meant to click back.

Oh well, no use crying over spilled dough. I like the KOF series, cut my teeth on the KOF'95 game for the PS1. This was my first Neo game on VC, and I like to try a game from each system when they come out.

The Good: The emulation seems pretty good. Sound is okay and the graphics look razor sharp and ultra pixely at 480p on a 50" HD set. No filters here.

The Bad: I hate, hate, hate the button mappings for this game. I come from years and years of Street Fighter play on Saturn Pads or other 6 button affairs. Using the CC, I would have expected the punches to be on top (Y,X) and the kicks to be on bottom (B,A) with weak->strong going left to right. This seems like standard pad mappings over the years. However they are not arranged this way and for the first time not being able to re-map the buttons on VC has pissed me off. Secondly, I seem to be having problems with dragon-punch motions on the CC, although this could just be the fault of the game. Thirdly, the AI in this game seems very difficult and cheap, even on the "easy" setting. I'm talking about cheap in the second match here, not the famously cheap KOF bosses.

Anyway, I'm thoroughly scared away from any further NG fighting game purchases on VC, although it will be difficult to say no if SamSho 1 or 2 shows up.

On another topic: How do you feel about how Nintendo will handle the VC when the Wii Too rolls around? Will they somehow allow transfers and keep the service going from here on out? Or is this something that will be locked to the Wii and maybe not appear on their next console? Have they even said anything about this? I wonder how the contracts are worked out with third parties on the VC service? Are they signed up for the forseeable future or just this generation of hardware?

I'd probably put more money into the VC if I had some kind of assurance, but since we don't, spending money on all the classics seems like a huge gamble to me. I've bought several games on the service, but I've pretty much stuck with getting things I've never played/owned before. I'd buy my faves but I just don't feel super confident they won't go up in smoke some day.
