WII-KLY UPDATE: TWO NEW CLASSIC GAMES ADDED TO WII SHOP CHANNEL

Jan. 14, 2008

This week you can spend your time carefully planning puzzle strategies or rescuing a damsel in distress. Help one of the most iconic characters in all of video gamedom eat some troublesome ghosts or set off to defeat an evil organization using only your furious fists. The choice is yours. What are you in the mood for?

Nintendo adds new games to the Wii™ Shop Channel at 9 a.m. Pacific time every Monday. Wii owners with a high-speed Internet connection can redeem Wii Points™ to download the games. Wii Points can be purchased in the Wii Shop Channel or at retail outlets. This week's new games are:

Pac-Attack (Super NES®, 1-2 players, Rated E for Everyone, 800 Wii Points): Pac-Man makes a rare appearance outside of a maze environment in Pac-Attack, a fun and quirky puzzle game. This unique entry in the genre puts its own twist on established conventions and adds one of gaming's most iconic characters to the mix. The goal is simple: Keep your screen clear of falling blocks and ghosts by lining up blocks horizontally, causing them to disappear. Clearing the ghosts, though, requires the help of a hungry Pac-Man (who just happens to swing by every so often for a snack). It's up to you to get all of the ghosts lined up for him, because Pac-Man will keep eating them until he is stopped by a block or he runs out of ghosts. In addition, his range of movement on the playing field is limited to horizontal or downward—thus adding further strategy. There are three game modes to choose from: 1 Player Normal, 2 Player VS., and the challenging 1 Player Puzzle. Feel like gobbling up some ghosts?

Riot Zone (TurboGrafx16 CD-ROM, 1 player, Rated E 10+ for Everyone 10 and Older - Tobacco Reference, Violence, 800 Wii Points): Riot Zone is a side-scrolling fighting game that follows two heroes as they fight to take down an evil organization. The crime syndicate Dragon Zone has kidnapped Hawk's girlfriend and it's up to him and his partner detective, Tony, to get her back. Join them as they jump "fists first" into the grim Kowloon district. Play as Hawk or Tony and fight through all five stages in the deadly Kowloon district. Smash down the Dragon Zone goons in areas like the Harbor, Abandoned Warehouse and the Ghetto. Both characters have unique skills and attacks. Hawk is a master of karate, while Tony is a hard-hitter. That being said, both guys are massive and possess killer techniques. The hard-boiled action is enhanced by the game's realistic sound effects.

Can't wait until Friday when JSnake updates us Cheesemeister links us to a GameFAQs post that updates us on the fact that we're getting Shining Force 2, Mega Turrican, and Earthbound two games nobody's ever heard of--and in the justifiable way, not the undiscovered treasure way--on the 21st. :(

Even my optimism can only stretch so far. Especially when Japan has a bunch of awesome-looking games like Ys Book I & II, Dragon Slayer, Langrisser, Detana Twinbee, Pulseman, and Final Soldier that either were already translated into English or (in the case of Final Soldier) don't need much to be translated in the first place, and we're not seeing any of it. And some of these have been up for several months. :/

I could go for getting a few of those Europe exclusives, like Mega Man and Vectorman...

Pulseman should be a given for the next Genesis import. Aside from appearing on the Sega Channel the game is voiced entirely in english(the subtitles are in Japanese) and practically everything else(like options and such) is in english.

Calm down. One off week and you all go nutty. This is GAF, so it should be expected.

If all two game weeks were as good as last week I'd never ask for a three/four weeker again.

Anyways, evidence points to SSB coming out sometime in the next month, and I doubt 1080 will stay over there exclusively for very long.

I kind of said something to the same effect as far as two-game weeks go, but the trouble is that it isn't just one off week, at least speaking globally; this has been happening in Europe too lately, so I think there's valid reason for concern.

Europe got Harvest Moon this month, so they don't get the right to complain. If you didn't buy it, you're part of the problem.

Two games per week might be the new standard. Or it might just be a temporary lull. I'm damn sure that it won't get to the PSN/XBLA standard of one game a week, maybe. They might be getting ready for a giant Wii Ware bomb. Who knows? Japan is still at three games a week, so I'm erring on the side of caution.

Well, yeah, there's at least that.

Yeah, but Japan's awesome like that--
--hmm. Actually, I think I might have just defeated my own argument; if Japan continuing to get three isn't cause to assume that we're in a temporary lull since Japan always gets treated right, then Europe getting two isn't cause to assume that we're in a permanent slowdown since Europe gets screwed like half the time.

Sooo when is Phantasy Star actually coming?
Any reason why SEGA is so late with releasing this series on VC?
Or are they waiting for Master System to be available on VC first before they start and then release the games chronologically?

Hey guys, I got Donkey Kong Country 3 yesterday and had issues with the display on my PAL Wii. The screen kept scrolling slowly vertically, but if I brought up the home menu it stopped.

I'm running over component in 480p. I know there are issues with this apparently, and in some games you need to enable interlaced mode. The symptoms here are different though since I do get a picture, it's just that it's borked?

There's a button combination you can press which does something, but I don't know what it is nor if it'll fix it.

OFLC's been down for over 3 hours, I have a feeling some new games are gonna pop up.

Can any of you tell me how I can save a state of a game when I leave it?
Just open the Home Menu and go back to the Wii Menu. Next time you start up the game you'll continue where you left off. Doesn't work for N64 and Neo Geo games though. You can't create actual save states.

suggestions?

are there any roguelikes on the vc yet?

and recommends about multiplayer co-op stuff for two players of divergent skill levels?

thinking of reading through this entire thread thread gives me the fear.

Great news!

Toejam and Earl is a co-op roguelike.

The most notable other co-op games are Gunstar Heroes, Contra III, and the Streets of Rage series. It's not obvious to me that any of them are suited for divergent skills though. Gain Ground has co-op and seems quite interesting, but I've never played it. Also, there's a game called Dungeon Explorer, apparently a really fancy version of Gauntlet. That game might actually be sort of a good answer to both of your questions... but again, I have no direct experience with it.

Very yes.

I just recently got the first Lolo, and what a game. I can't believe I was so late to the party. So the second one being rated is excellent news.

If it would come sooner rather than later, that would be fine. :D

lolo is one of the best puzzle series ever made. that hal has let it fall into disuse is criminal--it should be tearing up ds or wii as frequently as something like bomberman or puzzle bobble.

It would be perfect for WiiWare :D

Lolo would be sweet on DS. I'm not even asking for stylus control, I'd just like a new Lolo game and the DS is perfectly suited for the game. Now I'm having fantasies of a new Lolo with a level builder and WiFi level sharing and I'm salviating.

Unfortunately, HAL seems perfectly content to just have Lolo make cameos in Kirby games as low-level bosses. Come to think of it, have Lololo and Lalala even appeared in a Kirby game since Kirby Super Star?

This's weeks update. North America got 1 new game, Europe got 1 new game, and both got Riot Zone.

Games available in Europe and not North America: Mega Man (NES), Mega Man 2 (NES), Skate or Die! (NES), Mario's Super Picross (SNES), 1080° Snowboarding (N64), Vectorman (GEN/MD), Crack Down (GEN/MD), ESWAT: City Under Siege (GEN/MD)

Games available in North America and not Europe: The Legend of Kage (NES), Elevator Action (NES), Tecmo Bowl (NES), Milon's Secret Castle (NES), Lode Runner (NES), Star Soldier (NES), Adventure Island (NES), NES Play Action Football (NES), Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels (NES, it's no longer available in Europe), Ninja Gaiden II: The Dark Sword of Chaos (NES), Zanac (NES), Ghosts 'n Goblins (NES), Romance of the Three Kingdoms IV: Wall of Fire (SNES), Metal Marines (SNES), Pac-Attack (SNES), Ecco Jr. (GEN), Eternal Champions (GEN), Bravoman (TG16), Ordyne (TG16)

Total: 8 in Europe, 19 in North America

Australia/New Zealand is the same as Europe, except they have Axelay (SNES) instead of Super C.

OFLC is still down, really wonder what's taking so long.

YES!!!

I loved the first one but for some reason I never manage to play the sequel. Time to buy some Wii points.

EU VC update:

YES! This will be mine on Monday (Assuming that the US store gets it this week! Can't believe I've never played this game! (BTW I love love love Waverace 64 so I'm dying to play 1080!)

It's still held up great (including visually!). Terrific racing game.

*sigh* I know this will sound like the typical VC-related FUD but you would hope the VC flame would be growing brighter as time goes by rather than shrinking to a flicker. If you subtract Riot Zone from EU's release today, they really only got 1 game.

I think most of us are in agreement that the amount of titles that can be quickly uploaded to VC (based on current conditions) is dwindling which led to the 3-2 transition, but there must surely be a better way of keeping the service going than this. Now would seem like a good time for NoA to change their VC strategy and instead announce the full month's releases and give their more marketing.

Any predictions for Monday? 1080 seems very likely, Harvest Moon and Lolo 2 also seem like good candidates, but I don't expect more than one of the three, and color me surprised if we get a 3 game week.

I'll have to go with:
-1080
-Something nobody wants

Games I'd like to see that are rated or were once rated and then suspiciously removed: Adventures of Lolo 2, Beetle Adventure Racing, Mega Turrican, Super Turrican, Zombies Ate My Neighbors, Do Re Mi Fantasy, Dragon Slayer, Lords of Thunder, Ys Book I & II (these last four are impossible for January because Hudson would have listed them on their site if they were coming)

Games I'd like to see that have been rumored or were released on the Japanese VC and would need either minimal or zero translation: Earthbound, Pulseman, Warsong, Final Soldier (again, Hudson would have listed it)
(Note: I don't know how much translation Monster World IV would need, but I'll take a guess that it's not "minimal")

What we'll actually get on Monday: 1080 Snowboarding, something nobody will buy, some other thing nobody will buy
...And we might not even get that second thing.

Sweet.

It would be nice if River City Ransom got a remake like Super Dodgeball. I'll take it on VC in the meantime, though.
What about the GBA version? I never managed to pick it up, but it looked pretty slick.
