WII-KLY UPDATE: TWO NEW CLASSIC GAMES ADDED TO WII SHOP CHANNEL

Feb. 18, 2008

Some gamers get skeptical when Roman numerals populate the title of a game. But make no mistake - this week's offerings are no mere sequels. They are some of the most highly regarded classic games around. So stock up on some Wii Points™ to battle the Dark Force or complete an action-packed trilogy.

Nintendo adds new games to the Wii™ Shop Channel at 9 a.m. Pacific time every Monday. Wii owners with a high-speed Internet connection can redeem Wii Points to download the games. Wii Points can be purchased in the Wii Shop Channel or at retail outlets. This week's new games are:

Ninja Gaiden™ III: The Ancient Ship of Doom: (NES®, 1 player, Rated E for Everyone - Mild Violence, 500 Wii Points): Join master ninja Ryu Hayabusa, last member of the famous Dragon Clan, in the third and final chapter of the legendary Ninja Gaiden saga. Ryu is framed for FBI agent Irene Lew's murder, and it's up to him to clear his name. Defeating superior life-forms created out of "life energy" called BIO-NOIDs and avoiding enemy ambushes are among the many obstacles which Ryu faces in this unpredictable adventure of mystery, deceit and destruction. Noticeable changes to the game-play mechanics include Ryu's ability to grab on to horizontal surfaces, his reduced falling speed and altered jumping maneuvers, and visible power-ups. Help Ryu defeat the forces of evil once more and discover the real culprit behind Irene's death as one of the most loved trilogies in video-game history comes to a close.

Phantasy Star™ II: (Sega Genesis, 1 player, Rated E for Everyone - Mild Animated Violence, 800 Wii Points): Hailed as one of the greatest games of all time by fans and media alike, Phantasy Star II is an RPG that features an epic story line and turn-based battles. Play as Rolf, Nei, Rudo or several other characters as you navigate through the Algol star system battling the evil Dark Force. Build your characters, select the right weapons and armor, and take on the forces of evil through various missions as you find the right combination of characters to complete each objective. Experience the magic once again in this great sequel.

question about Sin & Punishment,
i am trying to love this game as much as GAF does, and for the most part is fun, but i am having a hard time trying to configure a comfortable control method. i have a Classic Controller, which control configuration is best to use? i've tried all 3, but non of them feel good. what am i doing wrong?

You're off to an awesome start.

Get Sin & Punishment after. :)

If you've never had a Genesis or SNES, tons of great games there too.

Ghouls N Ghosts and Streets of Rage (among others) are musts on the Genny.

Type 1 controls, left analog to aim, X/Y to strafe. You could use the D-pad to strafe and the right analog to aim instead, but then the A button is a bit harder to reach.

I don't think Nintendo is to blame for this one.

I was under the impression that Capcom wanted all of the VC-eligible Mega Man games on the service since day one, but it was Nintendo that shot them down. Am I wrong on that?

That's a rumor that has been circulating, but I haven't seen any concrete proof one way or the other. I personally take it with a grain of salt - why exactly are the Mega Man games trickling out so slowly in Europe and haven't hit North America yet if they had them ready to go day one? Capcom certainly hasn't held back with other franchises, e.g. Street Fighter or Ghouls 'n Ghosts.

cool, i'll give that a whirl

Dunno why people want the megamans so bad with anniversary collection around. In fact, AC removes the slowdown and flickering from the NES originals, making them even better.

I'm taking a guess that it might be due to the button layout in AC and not being able to change it. Also, I would think that using the D-pad on either the Wiimote or the classic controller would be so much more comfortable than using the D-pad or stick on the GC controller.

Forgot about that. I have the PS2 version so the button layout thing isn't a problem for me. Why atomic planet didn't include button remapping for both versions is beyond me.

so i always wanted to try out the phantasy star series. is part 2's story connected to part 1? i also heard there was a lot of ports of that game. which is the best port for the cheapest price? thanks

The Anniversary Collection has some pretty crummy emulation. It also removes some neat tricks like the password in Mega Man 7 that allows you to choose from all eight Robot Masters at the start.

And that's not even mentioning the horrific button layout.

MM1-6 aren't really emulated. I think they were actually ported (they were taken from those japanese PS1 Megaman re-releases)

Maybe because for some odd reason Capcom switched the A and B buttons in the GameCube version?

There is exactly ONE NES game I always wanted to play, but never got around to. That game is Ninja Gaiden III. I've been waiting a long time for this. A long time.

Does anyone else have problems with flickering colors in games giving them headaches. Phantasy Star 2 and Xenogears both do it do me. I'm really enjoying Phantasy Star 2, but damn, it hurts my eyes when Rolf and Nei get attacked.

I vaguely remember playing this game when I was a wee lad, but I remember NG1+2 a lot more. How much more awesome is 3 than 2, peeps?

It's less awesome. They went totally overboard in the US release, upping the difficulty, making continues limited and removing passwords.

Don't worry. Besides Operation Wolf, there are 20 other games that have been in North America and not Europe. So even by just going with games released on the North American Virtual Console, there are 21 possible games.

I only have NG 1 now, not really sure if I want to pick up 3. Also, Nintendo better not disappoint with the VC content on Monday, because it's my birthday! But watch it be a really lackluster release :(

It's your fault we have all those stupid seizure warnings in games. Freak.

The day after my birthday was the September 3rd update, which say Adventure Island, Donkey Kong Jr. Math, and Landstalker: The Treasures of King Nole.

My friend wanted to mock me and tell me that Monday would be Bible Adventures and Superman 64. I would die a little inside if that actually happened.

I bet Superman 64 would get more downloads than a a lot of the 'unknown' releases.

That game is legendarily famous, plus its probably no worse than crap like China Warrior... at least its a good laugh.

And Landstalker is fantastic! What a great birthday you had.

Dowloaded day 1 for justice and great man-butt support!

Can someone give me a brief description of RCR, I hear it's a good game. Coop or not?

RCR is a beat em up mixed with an RPG. You beat guys up, they drop money, you use the money to go mall-shopping and buy items and food to boost stats like punch, kick, throwing, weapon use. You can pick up and use just about anything as a weapon, from tires, lead pipes, garbage cans, chain whips, rocks. There's a cheesy humor to the game, with enemies yelling "BARF!" after you beat them. They also have goofy names. It's 2 player-co op and uses a password save. Came out around 1990. One of the great technos games. There are few games like it. Definitely worth a try. It was re-released a couple of years ago by million on the GBA. The characters are super-deformed and marshmellowy. I'd say this game plays like a cross between Final Fight and Ninja Bros.

This weeks update. North America got 1 new game and 1 EU game, Europe got 1 new game and 1 NA game. FYI, I use the North American names of games.

Games available in Europe and not North America: Mega Man (NES), Mega Man 2 (NES), Skate or Die! (NES), River City Ransom (NES), Mario's Super Picross (SNES), Vectorman (GEN/MD), Crack Down (GEN/MD), ESWAT: City Under Siege (GEN/MD)

Games available in North America and not Europe: The Legend of Kage (NES), Elevator Action (NES), Tecmo Bowl (NES), Milon's Secret Castle (NES), Lode Runner (NES), Star Soldier (NES), NES Play Action Football (NES), Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels (NES, it's no longer available in Europe), Ninja Gaiden II: The Dark Sword of Chaos (NES), Zanac (NES), Ghosts 'n Goblins (NES), Operation Wolf (NES), Ninja Gaiden III: The Ancient Ship of Doom (NES), Romance of the Three Kingdoms IV: Wall of Fire (SNES), Metal Marines (SNES), Pac-Attack (SNES), Ecco Jr. (GEN),, Columns III: Revenge of Columns (GEN), Bravoman (TG16), Ordyne (TG16)

Total: 8 in Europe, 20 in North America

Australia/New Zealand is the same as Europe, except they have Axelay (SNES) instead of Super C.
