Official bitching about Hudson abandoning VC support. [VC/WiiWare = lost cause]

This weeks update. North America got 1 new game and 1 EU game, Europe got 1 new game and 1 NA game. FYI, I use the North American names of games.

Games available in Europe and not North America: Mega Man (NES), Mega Man 2 (NES), Skate or Die! (NES), River City Ransom (NES), Mario's Super Picross (SNES), Vectorman (GEN/MD), Crack Down (GEN/MD), ESWAT: City Under Siege (GEN/MD)

Games available in North America and not Europe: The Legend of Kage (NES), Elevator Action (NES), Tecmo Bowl (NES), Milon's Secret Castle (NES), Lode Runner (NES), Star Soldier (NES), NES Play Action Football (NES), Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels (NES, it's no longer available in Europe), Ninja Gaiden II: The Dark Sword of Chaos (NES), Zanac (NES), Ghosts 'n Goblins (NES), Operation Wolf (NES), Ninja Gaiden III: The Ancient Ship of Doom (NES), Romance of the Three Kingdoms IV: Wall of Fire (SNES), Metal Marines (SNES), Pac-Attack (SNES), Harvest Moon (SNES), Ecco Jr. (GEN),, Columns III: Revenge of Columns (GEN), Bravoman (TG16), Ordyne (TG16)

Total: 8 in Europe, 21 in North America

Australia/New Zealand is the same as Europe, except they have Axelay (SNES) instead of Super C.

Err, I'm damn positive I remember complaining about Harvest Moon being out in Europe a few weeks before it came out stateside.

Psychosis for US, EU and AU next week (As expected - It's the last week of the month).

Japan gets:

Master System: Fist of the North Star
MD: Gley Lancer
PCE: Neo Nectaris, Power Eleven

That leaves Do Re Mi Fantasy without a date, so either they'll update twice next week or it'll be delayed.

And yeah, TJ, Harvest Moon was out in Europe/Australia before the US.

I hope we get a US release of Gleylancer... IIRC that didn't come out in the states but it's still a rather good shmup, and you seriously can't get enough of these.

And so Gleylancer joins Final Soldier, Monster World IV, Pulseman, and Warsong on the list of VC games I want that have been released in Japan. (And Langrisser II and Treasure Hunter G, but the odds of those ever coming over are nil.)

Separate note: I thought Master System was supposed to launch for the Japanese VC in February?

Isn't Neo Nectaris a PC-Engine+CD game though? I mean, I guess it could work, they must be converting the music CD track into MP3 or something, right?

umm.. there's already a few TurboCD (and SuperCD even) games on Wii. unless you mean something else.

Errr . . . it did. It is February right now and among the games listed in the post you quote above is a Master System title (Fist of the North Star). There's either a typo in your note, or I'm missing something.

So there's the Master System Jap exclusive for now and C64 Europe exclusive for now.

What will it be for US? Amiga? Atari/Coleco/Intellivision bundle?

Aaaand, ESRB update:

Pengo SEGA of America E No Descriptors Wii
Super Fantasy Zone SEGA of America E Mild Cartoon Violence Wii

Both MD/GEN.

Pengo is AWESOME.

Anybody remember what short-lived sitcom had a character make a joke about Pengo?

Next week is still February :p
Oh. Yes, of course; I'll be in the corner looking stupid now. >_>

Anyway, yay Super Fantasy Zone, will buy. CreatureX3 should be happy when he finds out; he seems to be really big on the Fantasy Zone games. Edit: I just hope SFZ doesn't get sucked into the nebulous abyss currently occupied by Dragon Slayer, Ys Book I & II, Mega Turrican, Shining Force II, Do Re Mi Fantasy, and Super Turrican, where stuff gets rated and proceeds to never show up for download. But I've been over this too many times to keep repeating it...

It'd be great if it is the formerly JP only Genesis Pengo. Not only did it have a good conversion of the arcade game, and a modernized single player mode, but it also has a 4 player Bomberman-esque battle mode. It also doesn't need any translation, giving me even more hope.

Not to mention costs a ton on ebay.

Wii-kly Update: Two New Classic Games Added to Wii Shop Channel

This week’s additions take players on a psychedelic trip down memory lane. Kirby® is back and armed with a bunch of new talents, including the option to combine abilities. Curious to find out what mixing the Burn and Cutter powers gives Kirby? We won’t spoil that for you here. If the colorful landscapes in the pink sphere’s world are too much for you and you’re looking for straight firepower instead, then try plunging your soul into the mind of a twisted demon. We’ll just see how you fare against wave after wave of bizarre enemy creatures in that kind of environment.

Nintendo adds new games to the Wii™ Shop Channel at 9 a.m. Pacific time every Monday. Wii owners with a high-speed Internet connection can redeem Wii Points to download the games. Wii Points can be purchased in the Wii Shop Channel or at retail outlets. This week’s new games are:

Kirby 64™: The Crystal Shards: (Nintendo 64®, 1-4 players, Rated E for Everyone, 1,000 Wii Points): Kirby’s first 3-D adventure is also his Nintendo 64 debut, and it finds the always-versatile hero battling a new enemy called Dark Matter. Dark Matter is after a distant land’s powerful crystal, but a young fairy named Ribbon attempts to save it by escaping with the gem to Dream Land. Now the crystal has been broken, and it’s scattered around the world. Take control of Kirby and help him journey across six worlds, battling a wide variety of enemies and challenging bosses, as he tries to collect all 100 pieces of the shattered crystal. Along the way, you’ll use Kirby’s trademark copying ability to use enemies’ strengths against them. Not only that, but try combining any two abilities to create a brand-new one that is usually stronger than the original. Throw in three exciting multiplayer minigames, and you’ve got a package of which even King Dedede would be proud. Fans of Kirby and action games with bright, colorful graphics should vacuum this one up.

Psychosis: (TurboGrafx16, 1 player, Rated E for Everyone – Mild Fantasy Violence, 600 Wii Points): This is a side-scrolling shooter played in a world created from the mind of a twisted demon. Your soul has suddenly wandered into that evil world that exists in every person’s heart. The only way out is to blast your way past the grotesque creatures that block your path in five “causes” (stages). You must face the dangers of this psychedelic world by making full use of three shot types and the satellite option. With power-ups, you can change your shots to a wide-coverage beam, a satellite-generated laser and more. Each shot type can be powered up to three levels. You can also block enemy fire by rotating the satellites to a desired position. How you use these features will be the key to successfully escaping this strange and surreal world.

This is one of few N64 games I missed out on, so I hope this comes to Europe fast (Like, next Friday fast). I hear it's great. And you can't help but laugh at those insisting Super Smash Bros. would come out as next N64 game.

YES! I've always wanted to play that game! :D Mixing powers sounds so awesome! (Sorry but Kirby Squeak Squad didn't quite cut it)

I think I'll get Kirby 64 when it hits Europe. It's one of the few Nintendo developed games I didn't own for the N64, though I played it briefly at a games shop.

No.

Ehhhhh... mediocre. It's just way too easy. Go get the GBA game.
Yes, yes, and yes. Either of the GBA games. Or the DS game. Or Canvas Curse. Or wait for the Kirby Super Star DS remake. Or get Kirby's Adventure on VC if you haven't gotten that already. Just anything but Kirby 64, the worst of the series by far.

Yes, the worst. Even if for some sadistic reason you wanted to experience a bland and average Kirby game instead of the good ones, then I would still say at least wait for Kirby's Dreamland 3 on VC. KD3 isn't good either, but at least it's way ahead of Kirby 64 since KD3 feels like it's playing at three-quarters-speed instead of half-speed.

Key word is "sounds." :( I predict that coming off of Kirby Squeak Squad will be like culture shock to you.

Yet again, Jiggy is right. Kirby 64 was the third main series Kirby game I played (after Super Star and Dreamland 3) and I remember wondering if Super Star's awesomeness was some bizarre fluke. Kirby 64 is the slowest Kirby game. The action isn't nearly as fast-paced and the game plays more like a traditional platformer than a Kirby game. The problem is that Kirby's ability to fly kind of nullifies any platforming in the game. They did limit Kirby's ability to fly, perhaps to bring him in line with his Smash Bros. incarnation, but all that does is slow the gameplay down even more.

Mixing powers is a good concept. Heck, I'd even like to see it re-explored in some future Kirby title. However, it's wasted in Kirby 64. Most of the powers are useless and you'll probably find yourself sticking to a select number of abilities throughout the game. This defeats the purpose of the ability copy system; a good portion of the fun from the good Kirby games is shifting from power to power and experimenting with each one. That concept loses something when half of the powers do stupid things like turn Kirby into a curling stone.

On the bright side, you can play as King Dedede in a select number of sections. However, Dedede is basically an even slower Kirby with a gimped Hammer ability. If you want to play as Dedede, just wait for Smash Bros. Brawl. >_>

If you want a Kirby game to play on the VC...just replay Kirby's Adventure. Because Kirby 64 is seriously not worth the time or the ten bucks it costs.

Kirby 64 out of nowhere. I was kinda hoping for RCR like Europe got, but oh well. I kind of want to get K64 since it's pretty much the only major Kirby release I never tried, but you guys seem to dislike it...I'll probably just go back and get Phantasy Star 2 or Lords of Thunder instead.

Since February's almost over, I've got hope for when Hudson posts their March releases...give us Ys or Dragon Slayer this time, I want some hot TG-CD RPG action, dammit.

I enjoyed Kirby 64 quite a lot, but it's true that it's extremely slow. Kirby and everything else just move too slow for some reason. Still, a surprisingly pretty N64 game.

That's exactly why I prefer Kirby 64 over the manic GBA games. It is much more enjoyable.

Here are some criteria to determine whether a game on VC is more worth buying than Kirby 64:

-The word "Kirby's" can be found somewhere in the title (Adventure, Avalanche, Dream Course)
-The word "Mario" can be found in the title and it's not Mario Bros. (MK64, PM1, SM64, SMB, SMB2/DDP, SMB2/LL, SMB3, SMW)
-The word "Soldier" can be found in the title and it's not NES Star Soldier (Alien Soldier, Soldier Blade, Super Star Soldier)
-The word "Sonic" can be found in the title and it's 2D (Sonic 1, 2, 3, probably even Spinball but I haven't played it)
-The term "Star" is in the title somewhere, either as a whole word or part of one, and it's not NES Star Soldier (Gunstar Heroes, Phantasy Star II, Ristar, Star Tropics, probably Baseball Stars 2 also)
-Title begins with "Adventures of Lolo" (1, 2)
-Title begins with "Legend of" and doesn't end in "Kage" or "Tonma" (the Mystical Ninja, Zelda, Zelda LttP, Zelda OoT)
-Title ends with "Metroid" (NES, SNES)
-Title begins with "Neutopia" (1, 2)
-Title ends with "of Thunder" (Gate, Lords)
-It's an N64 game in a genre you like and isn't Yoshi's Story (1080, F-Zero, Legend of Zelda, Mario, Mario Kart, Pokemon Snap, Sin and Punishment, Star Fox, Wave Race)
-It's any entry in a series with three games on VC, excluding NES Star Soldier, the first Bonk, and all of the Golden Axe games (Castlevania, Donkey Kong Country, Street Fighter II, Streets of Rage, Wonder Boy, probably Ninja Gaiden)
-It's made by Treasure and isn't Light Crusader* (Gunstar Heroes, Sin and Punishment, probably Dynamite Headdy)

*only because I haven't played Light Crusader or even seen any impressions of it, so I really don't know

And actually there are many other games on VC much better than Kirby 64, but I was only listing criteria that each individually turned up two or more games, when limited to games I've actually played.

Kirby 64 is not Kirby Superstar. Did somebody screw up?

Clearly, someone did. Not only is Kirby 64 coming Monday, but Kirby's Dream Land 3 is ESRB rated.

Did I offend someone at Nintendo or something?
