Official Doctor Who Series 1, 5, 31, or Fnarg Thread of Moffat & Smith

Really enjoyed both episodes, good start for the new doctor - the scene with him holding Amy outside of the Tardis was cool and I thought the story for this latest episode was great (reminded me of the episode 'Encounter at Farpoint' from Star Trek TNG). Don't really like 'geronimo' as a catchphrase though, especially when the effects budget doesn't cover actually showing the leap the catchphrase prefaces :lol

Made myself an avatar from the episode, although I notice it's kinda similar to one of Keyser's.

It was still a good episode but definitely Moffat's weakest. I think the story could have benefited from having a second episode or at least being a full hour.

The Doctor getting angry is always good. :D

Can't wait to watch in a bit. Kinda disappointed to read that the intro is still the same. Thought they would change it, but oh well it'll probably grow on me.

Thanks!

Thought this episode was pretty good. I'm liking what I see so far from Moffat, so I have high hopes for the rest of the season. :D I think the use of geronimo could get annoying if it pops up every single episode though...

Next week looks fun,
Dalek's and Winston Churchill.

The episode was way too short to service the idea behind the script, which was just plain marvelous. I'm surprised at the amount of imagination that's behind it. It was.. well, it lacked conflict. And a climax. And that's why, when the resolution comes, it kind of feels detached.

Lovely, but definitely Moffat's weakest so far.

Agreed

I don't even think
they gave you enough time for any twist to have an impact.

and they didn't really address the fact that the whale was still eating people it was fed. I mean, we can assume they'll find an alternate food source, but still they were serving it people.

I gotta say, I loved how subdued the score was today. I adore Gold's bombastic scores with tons of trumpets and cymbals, but it's nice to have a change in mood every once in a while.

Which reminds me, when is the BBC going to release the music for last year's specials?

I found it pretty disappointing, although still highly enjoyable. The premise was excellent and one of Moffats best, but the end product was kind of disjointed and rushed. It could've made for an awesome 2-parter, actually. I think i'll like it much more when i rewatch it.

Loved the Star Wars nods in this episode (trash compactor + Doctor/Amy looking out at starscape mirroring closing shot of ESB).

Story didn't have enough time to resolve all the questions it raised, but thematically and imaginatively the writing was superb and I'm willing to forgive the small flaws.

Moffat's writing is leaps and bounds ahead of RTD's. It feels like a new show. I'd even go as far as saying it's my favorite incarnation of Doctor Who... ever (Baker be damned!).

Great television. The Doctor Who reboot has gone from campy but enjoyable sci-fi to emotionally charged and existential fairytale.

Also, I want to marry Karen Gillan. Hope Matt Smith is tapping that.

is it wrong that I was thinking 'he can see right up her nightdress'?

Was never going to happen. And it won't change until at least next series, where it may see some very minor changes.

I didn't think the first half of the episode was quite up to Moffat's standards- while still enjoying it!- but the final scenes completely sold me. Smith's Doctor has quite a range.

So far I am really enjoying this new season. Both episodes so far have been good, I like the way more quirky Doctor that Matt Smith is doing and the new companion seems to be a real character. Even more than previous ones. Shes also hot. ;)

That's funny, I thought the build up was great, but I think it could have used a few more minutes or so to convey the gravity of the situation.

Only thing I don't really like so far is that the new Doctor doesn't seem that much different from the old one.

On a side note, I'm making my way through the Tennant run (stopped halfway through Season 3 at one point for some reason and never finished) and holy crap were Human Nature/The Family of Blood amazing!

1. Not as mentally stable.
2. Not as much faith in humanity.
3. Orders his companion around more.
4. Higher energy levels throughout the show.

At least those are the things I've noticed. I'm not sure if you'd think they're significant.

The Beast Below really should have been a two-parter; the execution suffered due to time constraints. That's not to say it wasn't well written, acted, or highly enjoyable. Because it certainly was. Easily better than anything RTD ever did, and not nearly the weakest of Grand Moff's efforts as some think.

The Dalek episode next week looks pretty interesting.

The demon headmaster was under utilised. He has a face built for scaring children.

But an otherwise enjoyable episode. Looking forward to next week.

Liked it a lot. Moffat is a god at making simple things horrifying. Favourite moment is when the Smileys stood up for the first time.

Main criticism (and why I prefer last week's episode over this) is that there was too much story crammed into 45 mins. Not much breathing time. I could see the idea being a stronger two-parter.

Oh, and Matt Smith is Patrick Troughton reborn! His precision, soft-spoken anger, and the way he seems to be always thinking really remind me of the amazing second Doctor.

i like where this series is going, but darleks already =(.
I'd completely agree, were it not for the awesome setting of WWII and a gleefully stupid archetypal characterisation of Churchill.

I'm also approaching this series as a completely blank slate, so how recently RTD Who did the Daleks bears no relation on the appropriateness of Moffat Who Daleks.

Not really liking this new season very much. But Matt Smith might be an interesting Doctor. Seems like he's a little bit calmer than Tennant, not as impassioned. Tennant was kinda wearing on me. Let's see if they can handle a Dalek episode.

And then the LORD David Bowie saith to his Son, Jonny Depp: 'Go, and spread my image amongst the cosmos. For every living thing is in anguish and only the LIGHT shall give them reprieve.'
I just saw a preview of this....after seeing a couple episodes of the Eccleston season and that's about it, the production values seem to have shot way up. It seems more like a feature than a tv show, very well done. Was the Tennant season the same way?

And that girl is really hot.

The production values went up with every series, but the actual cinematography in these two episodes has been totally different.

This show should be called Amy Pond's legs and a Doctor.

I think seasons 3 and 4 (Tennant's second and third seasons) have the highest production values. The first season (Eccleston) looks a little cheap compared to later seasons.

Yeah, but they seemed to accept their limits in the first season. Generally.

The whole "tongue" part was so cheap it made it even funnier.
Good episode nonetheless, but some things did annoy me quite a bit (as it's been mentioned, nothing about the fact that they'll
still feed the whale with humans
, and Moffat saying that the Assassin's Creeds cosplayers were
half smilers
just because it's what you'd want to see...)

But we nearly got to see Amy's underwear, so all is well.

Nice i-Dalek look! Guess the beeb needed some new Daleks to sell at Christmas - repainting the old ones probably wasn't going to cut it anymore.

Funny that you'd describe it as 'i-Dalek', coz I'm getting a real retro vibe from those Daleks. They look awesome.

Probably because they have a clean un-fussy look to them. Especially the head rims.
But Moffat is known as being a big fan of the 60's Hammer Who movies. Hence the
MEGA BUMPERZ-WE-BE-RIDING-WE-BE-EXTERMINATING!
:D

I actually remember thinking the RTD gold ones looked bigger and more meaty then their old counterparts - but Moffat ones look like they would sink them in a second - infact the WW2 ones look a bit tatty in comparison (sure that's down to the paintjob made to look bland when you see the new ones roll off the production line. Still Dalek haters be damned - Moffat wouldn't spend the money redesigning them unless they had a big part to play in future seasons - they seem to be a shoe in for the finale
Wish the BBC would manage their spoilers better tho. :|

On a different note:-

Over 10 mil final for 11th Hour. :D With over 1 million iplayer downloads on top of that.
