Something just struck me about The Beast Below, something that could just be a coincidence, but if not, makes me *really* impressed with Moffat. Spoilers for the content.

An episode with strong political themes is set aboard Starship UK, a place only containing people from Britain, with strong 1950s feelings and the Union Flag all over the place.

An absolute utopia for a *certain* unpleasant political party.

Then Liz 10 turns up, and their dream becomes a nightmare.

It's quite possible it's a coincidence, but if not, Moffat's being deliciously evil.

Still, he gives off a vibe of "I'm likeable as the Dcotor, I'm a punk as a man"
And I'm not sure if I'm up for the Daleks yet, everytime they come it's supposed to be the freaking end of the world, so here it feels like there is not build up. Of course, I might be wrong, wait and see...

“Once every five years everyone chooses to forget what they have learned. That’s democracy.”

I'd say not a coincidence.

I'm actually quite excited for another Dalek episode. It's been quite a while since we've seen them in a dedicated episode. (2008) I can see why some may be tired of them though.

I don't really feel like they're trying to have it *be* the end of the world with this one, from the preview, which is exactly why it might be really good. The best dalek episode in the new series (aptly named "Dalek") was not an end of the world scenario at all. It put Rose in mortal danger, but not the world.

This one seems like just a fun romp.

They're discussing the new series on You Have Been Watching. Not laying into it, but rather other assorted Dr. Who terribleness. Own up - which GAFfers have seen Doctor Screw?

Has anyone here been to the Doctor Who shop in East Ham, London. I didn't get time but i'm looking to get some goodies next time.

Anyway my thoughts on the last episode, is that it wasn't very good, maybe i was expecting to be blown away, but i hope its a little more eventful next episode

i love matt smith as the doctor so far, but he looks like he should be on the "hot chicks with douchebags" site in this picture.

I get the first bit, but what does Liz 10 have to do with it? Am I missing something here?

I agree, and in general I think the best episodes tend to not discuss "the end of the world".
The world is never going to end so there's no tension in those episodes, the Doctor has
to save it or there can't be any more Doctor Who.

But when we deal with otehr situations then bad things can happen, and stay happened.

Remember when they asked J.K. Rowling to do it but she said she was too busy? I wonder if Moffat would have a better chance at convincing her.

IIRC that rumour actually turned out to be that she was being asked to be in it. The Next Doctor was very nearly a story where some of the stuff from JK's stories started finding their way into the real world through some alien intervention. They wanted her to play herself. Of all people, Tennant vetoed it. This was all later revealed in RTD's making of book.

They may have asked her to write before then, though.

That sounds terrible, but The Next Doctor was hardly great as is.

The Next Doctor was a fun episode, but I agree, any Harry Potter love-in would have been really bad.
It was perfectly enjoyable... until the horrible ending, overweighed with embarassing CG and melodrama.

All I remember is Cybermus Prime fighting a hot air balloon, which is all I need on Christmas Day to be honest.

Well, that was really why the episode was spiked - the idea was bad, let's be honest. There's a lot of interesting killed ideas in that book of RTDs, though, like there were actually talks going on for a Star Trek crossover episode until Enterprise got cancelled. In the end RTD mused that it was probably better it never happened, as the Enterprise team would've wanted to drop the Doctor down a few pegs from his usual superiority. The idea almost then became an episode set on an Enterprise-style ship, but that too ended up swapped for something else.

If you read The Writer's Tale, you'd be surprised at how much RTD gushed with the idea. He really believed it was a great idea.

Ratings-wise, maybe.
