Arsène Wenger: 'We have a big squad at home'

Arsène Wenger has explained the major absences in his squad for the trip to FC Twente on Wednesday.

Arsenal are missing five major names and the long-term sidelined Tomas Rosicky and Eduardo.

It leaves the Frenchman relying on youngsters like Aaron Ramsey and Denilson to inspire his squad to a crucial victory in Holland.

"We have a big squad at home" said Wenger.

"Kolo Toure, Philippe Senderos, Cesc Fabregas, Samir Nasri, Abou Diaby, Tomas Rosicky and Eduardo are out.

"Kolo has a hip muscle problem. Cesc has a hamstring problem, he will be out for the next two games.

"Abou Diaby (thigh) will be out for a while, we knew that. Philippe Senderos has a scan on his hamstring. He did that today whereas Fabregas did his hamstring yesterday.

"Samir Nasri (knee/thigh) should be OK for Saturday and so should Kolo Toure".

When asked who was likely to come in as a replacement the manager replied "Aaron Ramsey has a good chance to start".

Fans invited to Sounders FC player announcement
Posted by Don Ruiz @ 06:44:33 pm

Seattle Sounders FC is inviting its fans to attend what it is calling "a special player announcement" at 2 p.m. Thursday at Qwest Field. The invitation goes on to call it a "historic event as the Sounders FC adds another to their 2009 roster."

Fans can park in the north lot of Qwest Field, and enter the stadium through the NW VIP gate where they will be directed to the field.

Youth players are encouraged to wear their team uniform, as there will also be an informal clinic led by members of the Sounders FC staff.
Kasey Keller?

Kasey Keller?
That seems like the most likely. I don't know who else it could be.
Some bigsoccer kids think Henry will come play for the Sounder. *chuckles*
now im nervous. I haven't been impressed with the squad too much in pre-season. we've looked a bit rusty. I guess that is to be expected. But, the tea, we're bringing to Holland is not our best by a long shot.

Not sure how else to put it together.

-------------Almunia------------
Sagna---Gallas--Djourou---Clichy
Eboue--Ramsey--Denilson--Walcott
--------VanPersie--Adebayor-----

Bench: Fabianski, Hoyte, Wilshere, Gibbs, Randall, Bendtner, Vela

Kasey Keller hardly makes for a "historic announcement". It's Henry.

Too soon. Plus, doesn't he want to play in NY?
Yeah, I thought he wanted to play in NY. The bs kids are dreaming. Man, Henry + a new stadium would be a great way to get MLS in New York rocking (again?).

It's probably Keller. This is MLS, you don't need much to call it a historic announcement.

Galarcep saying that Nowak is the top candidate for the LAG job.
According to West Coast sources, U.S. Olympic team head coach and U.S. national team assistant Peter Nowak is a leading candidate to become the Galaxy's new head coach. AEG president Tim Lieweke has yet to contact any candidates, but sources tell SBI that Nowak is at the top of Lieweke's short list for the job.

...

What other candidates are in the mix? You can expect former U.S. national team head coach Bruce Arena to be interviewed. Arena still boasts the best resume of any American coach in soccer history and expressed a desire to get back into coaching when interviewed in late spring. His relationship with Donovan is well-documented, and he also has a long-standing relationship with current interim Galaxy head coach Cobi Jones, who played for him on the national team. Arena struggled with the New York Red Bulls, but considering the list of accomplished coaches to struggle in New York, it isn't likely to be held against Arena in this process.

I would love Henry to come over just to see him play live once.

Sad to hear about Arsenal's (lack of a) squad. What is wrong with Rosciky? I remember him being out last year, is it the same injury?

US news....

The qualifier against Guatemala is only 8 days away (next Wed night). We should be hearing about the roster shortly. Might be an announcement during the Thursday MLS broadcast.

U.S. Men's Olympic Team Advancement Scenarios
With the top two finishers in each group advancing to the quarterfinals, the U.S. can advance to the next round with a win, draw, and possibly even a loss against Nigeria. The U.S. also has a chance to win Group B, which would mean they would face the second place team in Group A in the quarterfinals. Below are the scenarios for advancing to the quarterfinals, and for winning Group B.

How the U.S. can advance to the quarterfinals:

1) A win against Nigeria
With a win, the U.S. would end up with the most points in the group (7).

2) A draw against Nigeria
With a draw, the U.S. would end up tied with Nigeria on points and goal differential, but would finish ahead on the next tiebreaker, goals scored.

3) A loss against Nigeria AND a Netherlands draw or loss against Japan
With a loss, the U.S. could still finish in second place and advance to the quarterfinals with four points, but only if the Netherlands, sitting on two points, either lose or draw against Japan. A draw would only provide the Netherlands with three points, finishing below the U.S. at four points (Japan has no chance of catching the U.S. with zero points going into the final match).

How the U.S. can win the group:

1) A win against Nigeria
With a win, the U.S. would end up with the most points in the group (7).

2) A draw against Nigeria AND Netherlands draw or loss against Japan
With a draw, the U.S. would end up tied with Nigeria on points and goal differential, but would finish ahead on the next tiebreaker, goals scored. If the Netherlands, only sitting on two points, either lose or draw against Japan, they would end up with at most three points, finishing below the U.S. at four points

3) A draw against Nigeria AND a Netherlands win AND win the tiebreakers
With a draw AND a Netherlands win, the U.S. could still win the group depending on the tiebreakers (goal difference and goals scored). In this scenario, both teams would finish with five points. The U.S. would finish with a +1 goal differential, which means the U.S. would need the Netherlands (at a goal differential of 0 after two games) to only defeat Japan by one goal, putting them tied on goal differential at +1. If the Netherlands win by more than one goal, they would win the group. If the Netherlands win by just one goal, the next tiebreaker is goal scored. If it moves to this tiebreaker, as long as the U.S. scores at least as many goals as the Netherlands it would also win the group (after two games the U.S. is at 3, while the Netherlands are at 2).

However, if the U.S. and Netherlands are equal on the points, goal difference and goals scored, their ranking would be determined by a fair play point system, in which the number of yellow and red cards each team has received is evaluated. And if they’re still tied, the group winner will be decided by drawing of lots by the FIFA Organizing Committee.

Badilla-to-Revs Is Set

I'm hearing that New England VP of player personnel Mike Burns was in Costa Rica over the weekend to finalize the acquisition of defender Gabriel Badilla from Saprissa. Badilla, 24, is currently with the national team and awaiting a work visa and other paperwork to be completed. Barring a last-minute snag, he will be in a Revs uniform later this month.

Gambians in L.A.; Change in Colorado?

*A pair of young Gambian players have arrived at Home Depot Center to begin informal, two-week workouts with the Galaxy, according to Patrick McCabe, an agent with strong ties to the African soccer market.

They are Ebrima Bojang, a 6-foot-3, 16-year-old striker, and Amadou Sanyang, a 17-year-old defensive midfielder who is captain of Gambia's current under-20 national team squad.

Because of their ages, don't expect them to end up in MLS this season. But if the Galaxy likes them, they could be back early next year for workouts.

*I've heard from two reliable sources that Colorado management is seriously considering a coaching change -- dropping Fernando Clavijo and promoting English assistant Gary Smith -- and that a move could be made in the coming days. The Rapids are 1-5-3 in their last nine matches. Clavijo's regular season record in four years with Colorado is 39-49-24.

Maybe Jesus is real. I've been praying real hard lately for Clavagina to leave.

I'm gonna kill my fucking gf. She is demanding I come visit her this weekend and I can't leave Friday because I have a training seminar for my new job from 9-5 and a futsal game at 8. Arsenal are on at 8:45 AM Saturday morning.

That means I'll either have to leave New York at around 6AM Saturday morning or miss the game. I'm gonna break something.

She won't come here. She's come to see me the past 2 times so "it's my turn".

I'm out of town this weekend, too. No opening weekend Arsenal, no going to the Quakes-Revs match in SJ, and no Olympic Quarterfinals for me. :( Guess I'll give the DVR a workout.

Chester - Leeds, 1-5 after 34 min - Beckford hattrick. Hopefully PL clubs won't renew their interest in him. The goals are incredible:
1st: Teammate goalkeeper shoot the ball from own goal to the other goal, Beckford puts it in the net with _one_ touch
2nd: Screamer from 30m or something like that, left foot
3rd: Lob from 35 or so, great goals

Well it is... but this is retarded. You're trying to establish your professional livelihood and she's still making childish "demands," which isn't that surprising since I assume she's still in school and doesn't really realize what working the rat race is all about.

Never date in uni long term, and definitely not with someone that isn't graduating when you are.

well, she actually is graduated and working. She just expects me to "want to put in the time and effort" and get down there to see her. Especially after she's visited me the last few times. I just don't want to do it this weekend, or the next..

If I do go down there, things should get pretty interesting. and shitty.

Sure I hated her and every non-sex minute spent with her, but in my last relationship the only driving I did was to Las Vegas and back (which I didn't pay a red cent for beyond gas). There are more of them than there are of us, h0pper. Embrace your inner dick!
