general consensus is that crysis pc is a good deal? Anyone happen to know if they sell them at Tiger Direct outlets? Think I got 2 near me.

There were some comments when it was first announced. If you dig up stuff well enough you can find someone who bought one and posted a pic or two and gave impressions which were they perform as advertised.

Personally, if I were buying a $6-700 pre-made PC, and it ran games (crysis & everything else) well, I really wouldn't care for much more than a two or three year warranty, and just wash & repeat every few years, I guess it beats spending a whole lot more and trying to ride it out for longer.

I know that this thread seems a little more DIY desktop, but I had a quick laptop question to ask. My condo was broken into and my previous laptop just got stolen over the holidays so I'm looking to pick up a new one to replace it. The only thing that annoyed me about the old laptop was the lack of a dedicated GFX card so I want one of those this time around, but I've got a pretty limited budget and I don't want a real laptop gaming rig. I just want enough 3D power to run some older games at medium settings. The stats that I want are about as follows.

Duel-core T5800 or more
2GB RAM
Dedicated GFX card
15 inch screen prefered
about $800 to spend

So far I've been able to configure both a Dell Studio 15 and an HP dv5t to about these specs. Does anyone have an opinion between these two? Or any other laptops that might fit the bill for me?
Stick with the HP, add the 9600, add the T5800 and extra gig of RAM. $829.99 + shipping.

The HP's 9600 >>>>>>>>> an ATI Mobile 3450, seriously.

Hi, i'm looking to buy a new PC, but I need to cut down the cost a bit ... Any suggestions ??

[Case] XCLIO A380 SUPER TOWER BLACK
[PSU] COOLERMASTER RS-620 REALPOWER M620 620W
[CPU] INTEL CORE 2 QUAD CORE Q9550 2.83 GHZ
[Mobo] ASUS P5Q3
[GPU] XFX GEFORCE 8800GTS, G92 CORE, 512MB DDR3, PCI-E, RETAIL
[RAM] Corsair 4GB DDR 3 (2 x 2GB)
[HDD] Western Digital SATA 2 / 500 GB / 32mb buffer

Can you provide the links ? or at least price? Off the top, you don't need DDR3 ram. DDR2-800 is so cheap right now and there's more than enough headroom on it to for overclocking. You should shave a significant amount from that and also I don't know anything about the 8800GTS G92. You could also probably get a cheaper case unless you really want something that looks like that. Don't skimp on the power supply. A bad power supply leads to random reboots and system instabilities. You don't need to spend $200 for it but definitely don't buy the $20 PSU. Heed my warning.

i7 motherboards can also do dual channel. (how could you do three or one without being able to do two?)

And even though triple channel provides more bandwidth, the latencies are a bit higher.

1. Awesome. But what are MXM-IV slots in plain English?

2. And what exactly do you mean by "a new desktop platform"? Meaning the chip will be a desktop chip as in all other Clevo machines?

3. And what chip is Intel expected to unveil this year? Any sucessors to their current duo/quad series?

4. What's the story on Larabee?
1. MXM is just the standard module for GPUs that aren't soldered onto the motherboard. I'll let you read about all of that here.

2. In case you don't know, the Clevo D90x series uses desktop CPUs and chipsets, not mobile ones. The new Clevo D90xF was rumored to be using i7 processors, but it's a no-go.

3. On the mobile front, Intel's move is a refresh of the Montevina platform. Soon to be released:

P8700 - 2.53Ghz 3MB L2 Cache
P9600 - 2.66Ghz 6MB L2 Cache
T9550 - 2.66Ghz 6MB L2 Cache
T9800 - 2.93Ghz 6MB L2 Cache
Core 2 Quad Q9000 - 2.0Ghz 6MB L2 Cache

Next up is the GM55 Calpella platform in Q3, with the Clarksfield processors, which are the mobile equivalent of i7.

4. Mobile Larabee is not an issue of much discussion. I'll say Q4 of 2010 at the earliest.

So I have a 64-bit processor (Intel Quad Core Q6600 @ 2.4GHz) and I just requested the free upgrade disc from Dell. I have 4GBs of system memory, and I was thinking about reformatting anyway since I bought a new video card which isn't getting the best performance possible due most likely due to driver issues witht he old video.

So basically I was wondering is it really worth installing this on my system for these reasons? Will I see a decent boost in performance witht he amount of RAM I have? Are there still a lot of programs that aren't compatible with this version of Windows?

Okay, few things.

Change the GPU to HD4870 1GB OR GTX 260 216Core version, the newer ones.
Mobo to Asus P5Q Pro or just P5Q
HDD to WD 640GB AAKS or to save some money, AALS -version.

And on top of those, I'd go with 3x 2GB DDR3, not 2x 2GB.

Is DDR3 even justify that kind of a price tag if you're not going with an i7 processor?

Damn man. You can get a 4870 or 260 with EASE with that kinda money. Where you buying?

Well imo DDR3 is useless, unless you're going with i7 like Dry_Bones is now.

From a stupid e-shop apparently ... You see, by living in Greece I don't have many options ... But from what I'm seeing in their site, the 4870 is almost at the same price with the 8800 :-0 ! The 260 is just a bit higher ( 300 euros ) ..

What about a different CPU ?? The quad core is a bit expensive and I'm thinking of switching to the e8400 ..

Thanks for your suggestions as well ... I really appreciate the help ...

Yes absolutely change that DDR3 memory to 2x 2GB of DDR2 800mhz.

Got it ! :D

Do it. Especially since you saving money. You'll notice no difference in performance in games. Why pay double the price just to do a few more things at the same time?

yeah switch your CPU. Most PC games don't take advantage of 4 cores yet so the higher clock speed is better. The E8400 is very overclock friendly (very good at stock speed too) and if you really need a quad core, the q6600 is also a very good value/performance processor. You're better off cutting costs on the processor and putting that money saved into a better video card.

Just curious, can you link the store you're shopping at?

I'm looking at maybe building a new PC, but I've been out of the game so long that I am not exactly sure what I need to have a decent gaming rig that will last me at least 4 years.

So here's what I have put together, it would be great if someone could criticize it or let me know if I am missing something important. Also, I really want to keep it under $1,000.

  • ASUS P5Q Pro ATX LGA775 P45 DDR2 2PCI-E16 CrossFire 3PCI-E1 2PCI SATA2 Sound GBLAN eSATA Motherboard

  • Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 Dual Core Processor LGA775 3.0GHZ Wolfdale 1333FSB 6MB Retail

  • G.SKILL F2-8000CL5D-4GBPQ PC2-8000 4GB 2X2GB DDR2-1000 CL5-5-5-15 240PIN Dual Channel Memory Kit

  • ASUS DVD-E818A3T 18X DVD-ROM Drive SATA ANTI-VIBRATION with Black and White Front Panels (I plan on salvaging the DVDRW drive from my older rig)

Thanks in advance.

Ok thinking of building a PC setup.

I'm looking for a high end system that'll last me maybe 4 years. I need a new case, video card, sound card, mobo, and monitor.

would 1000$ be sufficient? What about 800? I'm looking to have a high quality monitor and good video and whatnot. Sound would be a bonus but I wouldn't put so much emphasis. This is going to be a gaming rig.

Thanks!

corsair hx520 is more than sufficient psu. I have the same setup with a 4870 and it runs fine.
Skip the sound card, generic (or brand if you really want to 'spend' [read:waste]) ddr2 800mhz is more than sufficient ram, too.
I have the same case / cpu / mobo.

You can even out that setup with a e7300 instead of a e8400 and put that money into a 4870 or a GTX 260. Unless you want to upgrade your GPU within the 4 years.

I got that same mobo + cpu and I overclocked my e7300 @ 3.0Ghz on stock cooling, no problems.

Have you ever had a dedicated sound card? The difference is huge. As I mentioned above, I have that same mobo and the on board realtek POS pales in comparison with my pci xfi extreme music that I bought 4-5 years ago. Especially if you wear headphones, playing first person shooters for example is a whole new level of immersion.

MadraptorMan, I don't know about the audigy but that I highly recommend an x-fi. They start at < $60.

Building one similar for a friend of mine. Couple of suggestions:
1) Take a look at the Gigabyte P45-UD3P board as well as I've been using Gigabyte boards exclusively now for 2 years now and I haven't had a board that hasn't been great.
2) Good processor, the Xigmatek-S1284 is out and make sure you get the retention bracket (extra $9 bucks) as it is completely worth it. Should be able to OC to 3.6-3.8 on stock volts while maintaining a sub 35C idle and less than 55C under load.
3) Check out the Crucial BallistiX DDR2 800. Has really nice timings and OC's on them are hitting over 1066 so they provide some good overhead.
4) What is your gaming resolution? If you game above 1280x1024 (i.e. 1680x1050 or higher) you'll really want above 512MB of video memory. The safer card is a 4850 with 1GB of RAM. Best bang for the buck is the Saphhire one for $161 @ newegg right now.
5) covered above.
6) Good hard drive.
7) I'd save the money for an HT Omega 7.1 sound card and rock the onboard for a while (IMO)
8) Coolmaster R690 is a great case, excellent choice.
9) You can get a 22X burner now (might as well).

Just my 2 cents.

40m GPUs in the second half have me rethinking my mobile 4850 purchase. I think I'll wait and see what the GT215 turns out to be.

ATI's cheap and powerful mobile chips are about to change the face of notebook gaming. Once the 4870 hits, Nvidia prices with have to drop by hundreds. No longer will legit high-end notebooks require a $2k+ investment. 4850 equipped machines are coming at sub-$1500, while the chips will aftermarket around $400, out pacing NV's $800 9800m GTX in price and performance.

$1500 is overkill assuming you don't go for the absolute best of the best that is currently available.

For example stick with a Core i7 920 that you can get for around $250 - $280 instead of going for the Core i7 965 Extreme Edition that costs nearly $1000 and definitely won't give you that much of an increase in performance.

I can't believe their naming scheme has gotten more retarded. It's unfathomable.

I'd toss $1,000 after shipping and taxes at that Bravia considering it's at 1920x1080.

Thanks for all the help guys. I think I'll keep the sound card just because it's cheap but effective. And I guess I'll look into getting a better GPU as well...the prices are definitely amazing right now. I remember spending $350 for a good one just three years ago!

Anyway, I appreciate all the suggestions!

Fallout 3? Sure.

Left 4 Dead? Uh-huh.

COD4? Yep

etc.

I thought I'd be in a gaming ghetto away from my main PC, but my laptop is showing yet again how viable PC gaming is on all types of machines. You just have to know what to pick.

40nm in 09? Christ. :lol

I can't believe their naming scheme has gotten more retarded. It's unfathomable.

I'd toss $1,000 after shipping and taxes at that Bravia considering it's at 1920x1080.

*Victim, what are you going to do now, did you build a new PC and I missed it or what?

Unknown. I'm waiting to find another job before I jump back in at this point which is fine since I just finished GRID, DMC4 for the fourth time, needing to take a break from TF2 anyways.

I have been reading the thread and I am in the same boat as the poster above.
I have £1600 and I am looking at a PC plus monitor for gaming and other duties.
Can anyone point me to a decent site that can supply me with the PC I need.
What models should I be looking at?
Thanks to all help and replies, they are really appreciated.

Barso, I understand you don't feel like building one yourself.

You can get decent premades for under a 1000 quid (including monitor) from Dell.

Nemo

Will Eat Your Children
Shouldn't even have to be from Dell. A lot of webshops do it premade. Where do you live?

Before I upgrade my computer, I have another question.
Since not too long ago, my computer is acting weird:
After a few hours (almost instantly sometimes when I open bittorent, etc) my computer starts beeping.
It's not coming from the speakers, just some weird beeping. beeps once, goes away, beeps twice, goes away, beeps three times, goes away.
after that, there's just this long beeping noise followed by my computer crashing. YAY! I say, with absolute joy, my computer sucks.

Do any of you guys have any idea what's causing the situation? my CPU is at 73 F, and my GPU is at 117 F.
I have no idea about my motherboard as it won't show up. halp?
