To report for duty would mean I placed value on it. Sorry sport I don't. If GameSpot feels its a 8.4 out of 10 then good for them. I'm glad they gave it that score. I'll see when I play it.
Reading the gamespot review basically summarizes all the reasons why Jade Empire is a EA-esque effort at hacking up and recycling their age old formula for RPG's.
I'm sure most people will have a good time with this game since it's deeper than more engaging than 98% of the other xbox games and even all the other console/PC games. No doubt this game will be fairly polished with only a few easily overlooked bugs. I guess people are just forgetting or simply don't know what made bioware a respectable game developer in the old days. They simply can't come up with any innovations in their recipe but can only change the look and gfx of the same game in disguise.
But yeah, I guess people should play it for themselves and see what I mean.

Just as annoying as IGN constantly inflating scores is Gamespot constantly undercutting the general opinion. If this happened once in a while it's not an issue. But the fact that both sites score just about every game in this pattern shows it's more their gimmick (sorry, "editorial policy") than anything else.

Let's just meet in the middle at a 9.2. Heck, it's not like there are any better console RPG's to play right now (recently released) than that. The same holds true if the game is an 8.4. My problem with Kasavin's review is the tone. It's like he's trying to make you come away from the review disappointed, even though 8.4 is supposedly "great". IIn what world does a short game with shallow combat, glitchy presentation, but good sound deserve even an 8.4? He just doesn't seem to like it, which is pretty much what divides people about KOTOR. Some people can't sit through that game, but to everyone else, it was the RPG of 2003.

That's nuts. The game looks awesome. Heck, even Kasavin says so. I realize some people don't like its art, and others don't think it uses the Xbox's power enough, but as RPG's go it's near the top of its genre. Hardly "piss poor", by any standard, especially taking just console RPG's into account.

The inability for folks to not only form a coherent opinion on a game they've susposedly been following is what cracks me up.
Staking it all on not only a review despite pretty much ALL information being avalible prior, but putting their faith in a numeric value from a SINGLE site that most folks here seem to disagree on to begin with while ignoring all current detail and all positive remarks from prior.
I'm buying it, I dig Biowares outlook on RPG's, and now that they're both temporarily moving towards inhouse game rules and towards more natural enviroments, I'm very interested. But y'know, whatever, I liked Fable too.

I dunno, I think fans of Japanese dungeon crawlers might be more grounded in reality 
As for my opinion, I'd be happy with Gamespot if they gave realistic scores on the whole to overhyped monsters compared to a lot of equally able, overlooked games. But they seem to be more selective with the "policy" with individual reviewers, so I find their system to be a little wonky.
However, I don't put any stake in reviews anyhow to be frank. With all the information out there, and a little common sense, it's rather easy for me to make my own decisions. So maybe that's why I don't intend on starting any fires, hmm.

That pretty much sums up this thread. Okay, Gamespot gave the game an 8.4. That's a good score. Why do people freak out if an overhyped and/or "big" release doesn't get at least a 9? When did games not getting scores of 9+ mean that they weren't worth bothering with?
Do I think something's up when all the other reviewers at this point have scored Jade Empire higher? Yes. It could be that Gamespot is trying to gain more hits by giving the game a slightly lower score and cause fanboys to rush to the site to read their review. But it could also be that Gamespot is being a little harsher on scoring games so as not to give every single title a 9 or 10; it's not like every single release is going to be perfection.
Let's wait until we've all had a chance to play the game before making any FINAL JUDGMENTS, okay?

I made the comment because it's hilarious to see people get so excited over review scores to justify their being a fan of any given game. Gamespot basically come out and shoot all the fanboys down with a realistic score and hilarity usually ensues. I enjoy that.
Btw, I plan on renting the game and seeing for myself as you suggested.

It got an 8.4 from Gamespot. Everyone else gave it a point or a point and a half higher in comparison. That's not a huge difference. Jade Empire hasn't been overhyped in general, despite what reading through this thread would have you believe.

A lot of people LOVED KOTOR, which is why they're so excited for Jade Empire. I thought KOTOR was a great game, and despite being let down by the Jade Empire demo, I'm more than willing to give this game a chance, and the high scores its been getting soldify a purchase from me on release day.

I thought it was a good review. I think his points were valid as far as I can tell not having played the game. He said it was short (20 hours), had poor character customization, and he felt that combat was a bit repetitive (ie fighting engine was not as interesting as it could have been).
I haven't played the game (getting it this week) but these seem like reasonable faults. He couldn't say enough good things about the story, setting and sound so it seemed pretty balanced.
IGN throws scores over nine around like crazy its hard to take them seriously.

As far as gaming reviews go, yea, Gamespot are as close to the word as you get. I almost always agree with their reviews after having played the game. I can't say the same for ANY other gaming review site. That's why I praise them like I do.
I am a whore for great presentation so any kind of Bioware-esque framerate drops/load times kills the chances of a 9.9 game for me.
Also, the idea that the combat is "immeasurably deep" in any game is crap. I didn't like IGN's review much either. All I took from their review was that it can be enjoyed that much, which is a good sign.

I'm looking forward to it. I was before IGN gave a 9.9, I'd still be if GameSpot gave it a 6.8 Make your own judgement after you play it. Granted, not all games are worth the effort, but BioWare usually is.

I did enjoy KOTOR, but this seems a bit more accessible than KOTOR. The visuals on that G4 special were impressive. I know one thing I hated about KOTOR was the way the health packs were used. I was hoping they would be used automatically, not actually have to command your character to use health. Hoepfully this is in JE.

Wow. Guess I was off on my G-Spot prediction. 8.4 is a suprising score none the less, considering how well JE has been scoring elsewhere. Typical IGN, way too high. Typical Gamespot, way too low.
