Should've happened a month or two after the Miocic fight at most.
We lost 1 year of prime Aspinall for this...
Fuck Dana and his stupid hard on for Jones.

The guy is finally out! I am curious to see what will be his future relative to the UFC.I don't see him being a comentator or having a youtube channel but like Connor Mcgregor I can't see him disapear from the mma world.

I don't really care about the stuff he's done outside fighting as it relates to his fighting career. He's still the best fighter I've ever seen and that's an opinion I held over a decade ago, before he even fought Daniel Cormier. He essentially ran through 3 different generations of light heavyweights, the first generation being when LHW was the strongest division in the sport. Sucks he didn't fight Tom, but it doesn't take away at all from what he's accomplished. He has the strongest resume in the sport and that's not debatable.

What a let down. McGregor and Jones both fumbled their legacy. Divas who, for years, held up the entire sport for nothing. Everyone breaking out the violins in regards to fighter pay, but then you have the two most insanely paid fighters practically ruin the sport for the past handful of years. Dana needs to take back control. The Super Bowl doesn't get cancelled or delayed because Tom Brady is renegotiating his contract.

Fumbled his legacy? I'm sorry, but what the fuck are you talking about? Not fighting Tom Aspinall automatically negates beating Shogun, Rampage, Chael Sonnen, Vitor, Machida, Gustaffson, Cormier, etc.?

I'm sorry, but some of you haven't been watching MMA very long and it shows.

Get the fuck out of here. I used to live in Vegas for 7 years and have been a fan of this sport since the Liddell - Couture days. Jones has fought maybe 3 times in the past 5 years and held up every division he's fought in. The man is notorious for letting his fans down.

Cormier was 38 in the first fight with Jones (30). Jones is 37 now, and Aspinall is 32.

That's incorrect. Cormier was 35 or 36, not that it matters. The idea that MMA fighters are at the same point in their careers based on age is retarded. Not everyone's prime is the same based on age. Look at Kevin Lee this past weekend. 8 years ago he was dominating Tony Ferguson for an interim title fight and got caught in a submission. He fought this past Friday in PFL and got the living fuck beat out of him by a no name fighter. He's only 32.

So fucking what if he's fought 3 times in 5 years? How does that undo the previous 12 years of his career where he ran through multiple champions? The recency bias is crazy. You're talking about (emotions) being disappointed with his inactivity and behavior when that has nothing to do with his dominance. If anything, it makes the last couple fights maybe more impressive since he was inactive.

Who's talking about prime? Are you trying to say that Jones now in a worse shape than Cormier was, and Aspinall is a much dangerous opponent than Jones was?

Beating old man Miocic? Lol.

It was always the UFCs fault, they are responsible at the end of the day, they were so desperate for the next big mainstream fight that they put divisions on hold to get it.

No denying he is a skilled fighter, but how can he be labeled with "GOAT" status with his years of failed drugs tests?

If you want to call yourself the greatest of all time then you need to fight all challengers in front of you. The fact he was ducking Tom so long speaks volumes.

C'mon now, Jones vs Aspinall was the only 'superfight' the UFC could make for years.
Everyone wanted to see this fight happen (except JJ).
It would have been yhuge!
You can't blame Dana and the UFC too much imo, in keeping the door open for Jones for this long.

If Tom had beaten one of the goats, he would become legend.

He fought Stipe in November last year and Aspinall won the interim title in July 2024. That fight wasn't even on the table before then. Stipe vs Jones was originally scheduled in 2023 and got delayed due to injury.

What antics in particular? the drunk driving and drugs? you stopped watching because of that?
...yes, his drunk driving is the reason why I stopped watching a sport that has nothing to do with driving.

Obviously, I'm talking about his in-ring antics. If you still feel the need to ask what antics in particular, literally just Google your question and take your pick.

Failed drug tests, ducked Ngannou for years, got an easy fight with a broken down Stipe and then ducked Aspinall just as he did with Ngannou.
1 defense in more than 2 years ffs...
Dude is a menace inside the octagon there's no doubt about that, some of the fights he had are legendary but overall I feel like he's more of a stain on the HW division than anything else.

And no I'm not forgetting the Gane fight, that win was amazing and I won't take that away from him, but tbh it only made me even more confused about him. Ngannou had a hard time with Gane, Jones stomped Gane in a matter of minutes, I can't understand why Jones is so afraid of the big guys. He must be one of the most insecure champions I've ever seen, mentally speaking.

That division has been dead for years because of his shennanigans and Dana allowing it. What a fucking sham.

And how many of those were in their prime when they fought Jones ?

Jones was an excellent fighter, but there is simply way too much "dirt" on him (both in and out of the cage) to ever make him the GOAT. Especially as heavyweight he's a fucking joke. Submitting Gane who looked utterly clueless on the ground, and a rusty and obviously over-the-hill Stipe is not impressive to me.

Especially as towards the end of his LHW run he was getting touched up heavily too, so its not like he's shown himself to be undamageable in a long, long time... hence is obvious avoidance of Tom and Francis.

He is an arrogant prick but it's hard to see your logic here.

How have you maintained interest? the Pride and K-1 days were incredible, the Strikeforce/WEC days awesome, but after the international expansion and after the Fertitas left, the UFC has a bloated roster of rookies.

I have such a hard time keeping interest in this sport anymore. The hype and anticipation of the past is completely gone, now its a conveyer belt of generic fights.

100% agree. This sport peaked 20 years ago.

Current UFC roster and leg kicking/hugging meta is boring as hell. Only fights Ill watch now are poatan or strickland.

The guys is a prick in and out of the octagon, and worse than the eye poking was that front knee kick. That shit should have been banned eons ago.
I would have loved to see Vitor rip his arm off or Machida's punch first round with 2 inches more reach, but there's no denying that he was one of the greatest. He beat fighters like Machida, TRT Vitor and Cormier like they were amateurs. IMHO he wasn't the greatest of all time. Anderson, GSP and Fedor were ahead of him, but he is in the top 5.

I wouldn't be surprised if Alex gets back his mojo, Jon wouldn't come out of retirement for a fight like that for a truckload of money.

And let us be sincere here, the peak of the sport was with Pride era and rise of the Fertitta's/Pre USADA UFC (2005-2015). But in both of these eras almost no one got a hook for doping.
Every single fighter in Pride was sweeting roids out of its pores. Overeem, Wanderley, Crocop, Arona, Tito, even Fedor. And let us not forget the TRT era of UFC.

"The criminal complaint stated an Albuquerque Police Officer was investigating a traffic crash near San Mateo and Lomas when she came across a woman in the front passenger seat of one of the cars "exhibiting signs of significant intoxication and lacking clothing from the waist down.

The woman reportedly said Jones was the driver, but fled the scene on foot. She then called Jones, the complaint stated, and a police service aide spoke to the man on the other end of the call believed to be Jones.

He "appeared to be heavily intoxicated and made statements implying his capacity to employ lethal force through third parties" to the PSA, the court record stated.

The PSA requested backup after what was believed to be a threat, when a police officer then talked to Jones and said similar "allusions to violence" were made.
The man on the phone never answered direct questions about whether he was Jones, the complaint stated.

When interviewed in person a few days after the crash, Jones said the woman found in the car had left his house earlier in the day intoxicated and called him after getting in the crash, at which time Jones said the person she handed the phone to "immediately opened the conversations with unprofessional language, which led him to doubt the legitimacy of the individual's claim.

The woman later told police she drank alcohol and consumed mushrooms at Jones' house and recalled needing to change her clothes at his house and "her next recollection was being at the scene of a traffic accident." She said the last person she remembered driving her car was Jones, the court record indicated.

Police said Jones called the woman's phone 13 times from the time of the crash until 11:34 a.m. the following morning and that text messages from his phone were included, though could not be "captured" in call detail records.

The police report indicated the crash happened Feb. 21, but also in one place stated an officer conducted follow-up interviews on Jan. 24.

It's unclear why the charge against Jones wasn't filed until months after the incident."

Two fights in the last five years. Plus he's a notorious drug cheat, and he's recently done another hit and run.

The guy is an irredeemable piece of shit.

Let's not forget losing against reyes, arguably lost against gustafsson, split decision with one legged santos that could have gone to the other dude and not being able to absolutely manhandle lionbum smith and getting a decision...

The goat alright.

Poor wife, beaten and cheated by this waste of cum.

Excellent fight resume.

Horrible criminal record.

Deeply questionable PED status.

Retires with a whimper.

If he was the GOAT it should've been done with fanfare and huge publicity. This just seems sad.

Greatest of all time remains a neck and neck race between Khabib and GSP

Nah, its Jon Jones. He had some bad fights in the last few years, but at his best he was the best ever. Even if I dislike the guy I can't deny it. He beat all styles.

GSP is right behind him. Khabib fought too many strikers. Anderson should have been in the conversation if he wasnt so fucking lazy. Fedor is almost impossible to place, he got fat and just took all fights he could without consideration at the end, and fought past his prime against faster younger guys, heavyweight is fucking wild west on crack in mma though, and he dominated for a long time. That CroCop fight had so much hype its hard to explain. Demetrious Johnson is in the vicinity as well.

I remember when he beat Bader and got offered the Shogun title fight on short notice during the post-fight interview. It's kinda funny to look back at the thread for that event and see that I felt like Shogun would be the favourite. But I suppose at that point he was still "just" the hot prospect who hadn't yet gone up against the top level of the division, while it had felt like Shogun had finally secured that top spot at 205 after years of setbacks. The 205 belt had hopped around between people (see: "The Machida Era") ever since Lidell had lost it and it wasn't until Jones that it then had another long-term champion.

Fighting old doesn't work like a football player playing into his 40s, Jon Jones was the most dynamic fighter of all time, the momentum offensively, if you aren't a Jon jones fan I understand why this is celebrated, his last fights weren't very good and it's difficult to stomach his headlines for speeding or drugs. But I'll say this Jon jones fights and pre fights or mandatory interviews were fun.

Shogun and Ninja, the Chute Boxe roid brothers!

Make me think of the past. I have Shogun's flying stomps imprinted in my mind.

I miss the Tito/Liddel rivalry, it seems so distant now. Sad to think about.

Not to mention Tito/Ken, the rivalry that saved the UFC.

That 2005 Middleweight Grand Prix run was incredible
