Official Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess thread

Got through the second dungeon today. The game has never failed to completely surprise me 'round every corner. It's so well-paced. Probably the best pacing a Zelda game's ever had. So far, I've had no particular "down time" to just do whatever, and I've played over 10 hours.

Hey just wondering..Does the sword shine? Not the shine that means you can do a spin attack..but the shine thats like reflecty. Like in OoT and MM.

nice, great review.

Thanks, I had to write it in a hurry to get it up tonight, so it's nice to hear that it turned out well. I was playing up to the last minute to see as much as I could before starting the review. I've got about 40 hours on the game clock, but I seem to have gotten farther in that time than most other people I know who have also had it early.

You gave it a 10 even though you obviously had issues with the control?

Yes. What, do you think 10 = perfect? No game is perfect. I don't start with the max score and subtract points for each flaw.

Youre right. You start at 10 and dont subtract anything.

to be fair, Johnny, you picked a REALLY shitty thing to mark points down for. Because if "control" is an 8.0, control being one of the most important aspects of any game, then i can't fathom how you'd think it'd warrant a 10. That seems highly suspicious, yeah.

Error2k4... can you stipulate that the spoiler tags are NOT TO BE USED FOR NON SPOILER COMMENTS.

It makes the thread unreadable when people are spoilering everything like dipshits.

8.0 for control doesn't mean that it's bad in anyway. Just not perfect. In spite of the controls not been perfect, it doesn't impede the rest of the game, which is as good as we've ever seen.

this just makes no sense to me. Control is something that impedes an entire game. If it's only an "8.0" (which is great still, no doubt), then giving the game a 10 makes no sense. Because other games ARE a 10 in control. But this is just a tiny arbitrary debate - the point is, Brad got a pretty good point, particularly since control is at least the first or second most important thing in a game.

yeah when I say using spoiler tags, is for stuff like items in the game, bosses, story stuff, dungeon stuff, sidequest stuff etc... etc...

I would consider the sword problems to be more of a major issue if Zelda was primarily about swordplay, but that is not the case. The sword is a minor annoyance (it usually works fine, but when it doesn't, that is frustrating) and it doesn't really affect my opinion of the game except to add an asterisk anytime I get asked about the controls.

Also, please note that the sword control problem did affect the score...for controls. It just didn't affect my overall score. When we say "not an average", that's what we mean.

I dont know why Amir0x would care tho since he is getting the Gamecube version....

what does that have to do with this debate? I wasn't talking about wiimote controls vs. any other controls, I was talking about how in general if controls score a 8.0, and you still give the game a 10, it's very odd to me and makes little sense.

This thread lacks SOUL.

Having said that, I caved in and decided to get a Wii. I just can't wait a month longer, damn it! I'll be waggling like a madman by tomorrow (today?) morning. :D

it just means the controls are not perfect but they don't drag down the experience.

that's the part that doesn't make sense though. How can such controls NOT drag down an experience? I mean i guess people are different, but if i had to pick three most important things about games, it'd be "graphics, control, design." And if ONE of those things has some major flaws, I couldn't give any game a "10."

it doesnt make little sense to me, an 8 is still a good score. you also miss the part where his overall score is not an average.

it not being an average also has nothing to do with my comments

then I dont know what the hell you are talking about then.

your point is that if the controls are not perfect then there is no way the game is a 10...? that's it right?

well firstly NOTHING can be perfect, we all know that

but if there are significant flaws in controls, as there seems to be here in his opinion (sword fighting has issues according to him, and that's somehow NOT a major thing in Zelda!?), then yes there's no way I could personally see sense in a 10. That's not because the scores are supposed to be an average, but because controls are one of the cornerstones of any videogame. When is that statement not true?

That's it. I'm buying a Wii + TP in the morning. I better find one!

My plan was to play a bunch of games before TP because I just finished several 2D Zelda games a week ago (oracles + replay of link's awakening) and didn't want to be burned out on zelda but I don't care anymore. maybe if I played the 3D ones it would be a problem. TP is different. I suppose controls could be a problem but parish said in the 1up show that he went in the game thinking it'll probably be a point behind the gcn version for controls but he was surprised at how good they were implemented in the game. And it got a 10. 10! I'm not going to wait anymore to play this game. :)

the reason it doesn't drag down the experience is that it's not a major flaw, just not perfect. at least that's the way I understand it.

Amir0x said:
wait, you don't think sword fighting is a major part of Zeruda?

Now I'm just bedazzled! Befuddled! Baffled!

Devil May Cry is about sword fighting. Zelda is about exploration, puzzle solving, and combat...but the combat portion is done with many different tools, not just the sword. So while the sword is an iconic part of the Zelda series, no, I do not think sword fighting is a major part of the actual gameplay. Most of the small enemies that can be defeated by the sword alone are placed as hindrances to the puzzles rather than as real combat challenges. Swordplay is a highly visible part of the game, but it is and has always been simplistic, even with the new moves in TP. Much more interesting is how you use all the other items in combat.

I agree with jonny, sword combat never is the central focus of Zelda.

if sword play is so important in a Zelda game then how come Link's move set is so limited?

Wow, it's late... that post was in the wrong thread.

I found Twilight Princess tonight, but no Wii yet. Wish me luck!

By the way, I couldn't be more impressed with the packaging, the white DVD case with that boxart really looks nice. It just seems odd looking at Zelda on a full size disc/DVD after the Gamecube years and cartridges.
