Official Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess thread

I adore the opening music when Link is talking and walking around with Rusl.

It has shades of at least 3 or 4 different themes from various Zelda games. It is mostly reminiscent of the Majora's Mask opening though.

Koji Kondo and company really drive it home in this one.

Midna must be the coolest 'sidekick' character in a long, long, long time. Maybe even ever.

Her witty remarks, dark humor, attitude, and slight manipulation of Link make me grin at a lot of the stuff she says. In stark contrast, I probably can't ever play OoT again and try listening to Navi anymore.

Man, I'm stucker than SHIT near the end of the 3rd Dungeon:

I'm in the room where I'm almost sure leads to the boss key. I've managed to get into the room where the key is, but I think I went in through the exit. Above the treasure box is a hole in the ceiling like you're supposed to drop down. I went back out through the tunnel I swam in to and located the door that leads to the hole, but I cannot for the life of me find a way to it. It's blocked in by walls surrounded by water, with no obvious way in. I've searched all up and down looking for points to bomb or clawshot to, but to no avail.

Can anyone help?

the boss key is found by hitting a switch on the ceiling with the hookshot, then you hang and go down since the door shuts if you release from the ceiling switch.

Thaedolus: I myself just finally got to right before the goddamned boss door. That dungeon is holy !@#@!#$
Keep swimming around, theres a way from the bottom that'll allow you to swim up to where that door is. Im sure i sat around there for at least 15-20 minutes figuring it out myself

I'm wanting to ask a question about the Wiimote speaker.

Are the sound effects you hear through the Wiimote when playing Zelda actually loud enough to hear properly? (for instance, when Minda speaks, is it actually clear and understandable or is it instead a mess?). Also do you find it adds to the immersion or not really?

Would you also say the volume the Wiimote speaker produces is equivelant to the DS?

Finally, how about the rumble? GC quality? better? or worse?

Thanks in advance :D

1. Yes, they're loud enough to hear properly. And Midna doesn't actually speak through the wiimote... she laughs, so there's nothing to understand as much as it is to acknowledge that she wants your attention.

2. No way. The speaker sound quality is ATROCIOUS, like Hallmark card quality bad, and I actually have a damn good sound system so it actually distracts from my personal immersion since a sound system is 100000x better. It's like the sound effects on the TV are one quality, and then i have this thing by me that's transmitting through, like, an alternate dimension of shitty sound. I would put it on mute, but apparently it's pretty necessary for the Wii version of TP.

3. No. But still, you can hear everything fine.

Okay, so about 28 hours in, 6 dungeons cleared, and two days of effort put in.

-Game of the Year
-Better than Ocarina of Time
-Wii controls are surprisingly not bad
-Midna is **** awesome and the best sidekick character in any adventure game ever

The opening four or five hours really reminded me of A Link to the Past more than Ocarina or Majora's Mask. Some of the puzzles feel like they're oldschool but in 3D. My god, the dungeon design. It's breathtaking. So fantastic.

And the scene that's repeating in my head, EVER since I saw it, is Zant grabbing Midna, lowering the bottom of his mask and saying, "I need you." Just so ****ing creepy. God I love this game.

Okay bye.

Yeah, I'm really surprised at how fast I'm moving through it. Need to slow it down a bit, but I'm sooooooo ****ing excited. I really really need to do some exploring.

eh, RIGHT after this dungeon, I swear.

How many side-quests have you done so far?

Also how about the story?

Ristamar said:
Is that 28 hours on the play clock, or 28 "true" hours accounting for any restarts, lost time from reloading, etc?

Clocked hours. I don't think I've had to restart a whole lot unless Game Overs count.

Sidequests...

Poes? Just found out about Agitha and the bugs, actually. So I'll be doing that next.

I think after this next dungeon, I'm going to revisit some older areas and mess around there a bit. Also've gotten the first two objectives Malo wanted complete (bridge and castle branch)

Story...

Really ****ing good. If it's this good NOW and endgame is still not in sight, it's going to be a big finale. From right after the third (AMAZING) dungeon to the end of the fourth (AMAZING) dungeon, there's a lot of really badass story stuff.

Also, I'm LOVING the theme to Twilight Princess. Very... hummable.

Speaking of game overs, how many did you get? How's the difficulty in general?

I've had around a dozen at this point. A couple on the overworld, a couple at the bosses, and a couple in the dungeons due to carelessness. The difficulty is at least at OoT's level, and far more difficult than TWW was.

Darunia said:

It's not too bad in the beginning. I died a couple times
falling into the lava or off a cliff when i had low health
but there's usually enough hearts and stuff around to keep you alive

Good god, just finish the first dungeon and boy is it meaty. It's longer than the 2nd or 3rd dungeon in Wind Waker easily. 5 hours in on the dot just to clear it, taking my time through..

Well actually, my mom is hogging the system to play Wii tennis. :(

My dad and sister prevented me from playing Zelda for almost two hours from when I arrived home with it (AT 1:30 AM!!), just so they could see all the other games.

That's been the extent of it for me though. Oh, and my dad and I saw Casino Royale today too (it's a father-son thing we do- watch new James Bond films in theaters), but that was really ****ing awesome (despite the audience's best efforts to ruin the film for me), so obviously no problem there.

Now that some of you have spend quite some time on the game, I have a question about the donjons.

I'm a huge fan of Majora's donjons, what I particulary appreciate is that there's a lot of puzzle that affect several room, if not the whole donjon. There was the big tower in the montain donjon, the stream that can be switched, the donjon you can rotate (awesome), does Twilight's donjon's feature these kind of awesomeness? Or are they just boring straigtforward cavern like in Wind Waker and Ocarina?

The donjons are a new breed overall, and break away completely from the mold right around the fifth donjon.

Awesome. :D

I just watched Gametrailers' timeline theory... hmmm, it's interesting that TSA did hint at the
split timelne theory not working with TP now in the series.
Can't wait to see an verify for myself.

Speaking of the timeline, has anyone gotten to a point where they can figure out when TP takes place? I'm still pretty clueless despite all the neat things left behind. The following applies after the 3rd dungeon, so read at your own risk!
My only guess is that its after oot with how things are. I mean.. isn't that the ruins of the old forest temple near the master sword? And.. apparently the nintendo guide says hes a skull kid.. o-o
I'm loving TP a lot, but it's bugging me in all hell that I haven't been given much of a hint on where this takes place. In Wind Waker, the mentions of the hero of time, and other legends really drove the points home. I'm still a bit lost here. Then again, I've only cleared that many dungeons.

I think, judging from the landscape and multiple ruins, that TP takes place at least 100 years after OoT/MM, with WW taking place after TP about another 100 years or so. Which is pretty much where Aonuma placed it in an interview. And if the 'split-timeline' theory is now debunked according to some people (TSA), then I guess this is all on one timeline.

I'm not exactly sure why some people said there was no reference to
the Hero of Time
in the early half of the game...because uh, there is. The
Ancient Hero
has already been mentioned multiple times by now.

Anyway, this game is just DRIPPING in nostalgia, wow. So many things have forced me to stop so I can take a look around.
The graveyard in Kakariko for example being the exact same layout as it was in OoT. That was very cool. Or seeing Lake Hylia again, or Hyrule Castle Town.
There's SO much direct linkage to OoT, and I love that about this game.

I'm in the 3rd dungeon now, and good god it felt like it took FOREVER to even get in there. All the events that take place up until finally walking inside the 3rd dungeon is pretty amazing.
Especially the creepy as hell cutscene with the 3 shadow links.
!!

Somebody mentioned they got an Animal Crossing feeling, and I definitely got the same thing after just getting out into Hyrule field and at night
catching a gold beetle!
So awesome, and then seeing
a glint of gold off WAY in the ****ing distance... must've surely been another one! But when I got to it it was on a ledge that I couldn't quite reach
. Such a small aspect to the game, but sooooo cool.

P.S. Just wandering around Hyrule Field at night is one of the most beautiful things I've ever done in a game. Day is gorgeous too!

P.P.S. I'm about 7 hours in, and just beginning to search for the
tears in Kariko Village
.

P.P.P.S. - Controls Edition - Make sure you adjust your remote sensitivity, etc. in the Zelda options menu. It gets a lot more in-depth than in the Wii system menu, and aiming got so much friendlier. My take on the controls now is that sword-swinging is still a little iffy (seems like it takes too much to register for my lazy arms and doesn't initiate as fast as I'd like), but everything else (except for backwards-ass map control, wtf?) is super.

he only thing I don't like about it is that there seems to be a slight lag between waggle and attacking with your sword... and also I hate in the 3D Zelda games how you have to constantly draw your weapon before attacking!!!!!
That's basically my sentiment.

Doesn't really hurt the game, though-- it's still ****ing Zelda.

Only got to play this game for 20 or sominutes, my brother had a save game in the first dungeon and another one at the Twilight Realm, so I just wandered around trying the control scheme. The pointer works great and is really intuitive, it only had about a 5 minute learning curve for me (plus it helped after I put the sensor bar on top of my TV instead of on the bottom...). The only thing I don't like about it is that there seems to be a slight lag between waggle and attacking with your sword... and also I hate in the 3D Zelda games how you have to constantly draw your weapon before attacking!!!!!

I'm still in the first dungeon because... I don't want to make any more progress. =\ Feels like I've been waiting on this game for a long time (oh wait) and I don't want to rush through it.

Well, as I mentioned, they only
refer to him as the hero of legend, at least Wind Waker outright said hero of time, and for the present day, hero of the wind. Also, yea, theres tons of places that felt like it was ripped straight from Ocarina. The little accove you find after getting the mastersword that's hidden under the rock was laid out just like the ones lying around in OOT! But honestly, Hyrule just keeps changing! XD Kakariko from the northeast to the west now! So, the great flood should proceed TP?

Yeah, they did call him the Hero of Time in Wind Waker, but they also refered to him by other names like hero of legend or ancient hero. And really the only hero that would be considered 'ancient' at this point would be the Hero of Time or the Link from Minish Cap. And since Aonuma said TP takes place after OoT, the hero references are probably towards the Hero of Time.

As far as the map placing is concerned, some areas are on the opposite sides due to the mirror flipping. In the GC version, all the areas in TP should match up pretty well with OoT's placement.

1. Is there a way to turn off your HUD or reduce the opacity like in Fire Emblem?

2. I read some say the remote lags in registering sword movements? Does everyone have this problem? Maybe its hardware related in terms of sensor bar placement?

3. How is the AI of a sword wielding enemy? For reference I think the Gerudo thieves in OoT fought pretty good. Are enemies with swords harder than the Gerudo girls or easier?

4. Are there archery, horseback-archery and horse racing mini-games?

5. Rumble - does it work like in OoT where it would start rumbling out of the blue somewhere (village, overworld field, etc) giving you a hint there is a hidden something nearby?

6. Which dungeon is your favorite so far? (Don't give the name, just the number)

7. How are the clouds/sun/moon in terms of art/gfx?

Ooh good point. I just took a look @ the map for GC and its for the most part. Except now Lake Hylia is SW o-o.

Can only answer:
1. Only the mini-map, AFAIK.

2. Pretty sure it's unavoidable, but I'm sure I and everyone else who now finds it a tiny problem will quickly adapt. It's not a glaring fault. Maybe increasing sensitivity in the Wii Options Menu might help? That could also throw everything else off, though.

7. Fcking BEAUTIFUL. Hitting Hyrule Field for the first time blew me away, really.

This game just keeps on delivering. (Lakeside mini-dungeon / pre- 3rd dungeon spoilers)

So I finally got some bombs and freed the Zoras from the ice, and I found an awesome mini dungeon by Lake Hylia. It's a network of tunnels hubbed by small rooms with unlit torch stands (it's good to have your lantern) and enemies in them. This whole mini-dungeon is almost completely black. The tunnels are dangerous because there are a lot of pits and gaps so you have to carefully walk on narrow wooden boards while defending yourself. In order to progress past each hub, you have to bomb a direction (three boulders blocking new paths in each hub). And since bombs are a lot more rare in TP, you have to choose carefully.

You'll find some Poes, Chus, Bats, Firey slugs, and Dodongos down in those hubbed rooms. The ambient music was awesome and scary - reminds you of how OoT caves were, only better. Kept me busy for probably 45 minutes last night just trying to work my way through there.

Gamespot's 8.8 has been bested
http://www.gamerankings.com/itemrankings/launchreview.asp?reviewid=744393

B+, which converts into a 8.5.
The review is garbage but he brings up the same point Gamespot did, "it brings nothing new to the table".

I haven't played the game yet (Zelda starts tomorrow at 9 sharp) so what do you guys feel about this? Does TP keep things fresh? Does creativity stand out instead of the tried and true?
Do the sum of its traditional Zelda parts come together to create a new experience?

Now that I have the game in my hands and I'm actually playing through it, I could give a frak less about these reviews. Yeah, it's cool as a big Zelda fan to see it possibly become the highest rated game of all time, but it doesn't really matter in the end.

TP is Zelda at it's finest. That's really the best way to put it.
