You might also consider your problems could be related to either your hard drive or your RAM. Either one might be going bad.
 
Anyone else unable to connect to Windows 2003 shares after upgrading to Snow Leopard? (including 10.6.1)

I can connect to servers at work, open the shares, but no files or folders enumerate and Finder just pinwheels.

Do they even attempt to test this fucking software with anything outside of the Apple eco-system?

Also, this AppleCare rep I'm on the phone with now is a fucking moron.

I'm calling the education line from a school with a school owned computer. We don't go down to ye' olde retail store and get the retail box, we buy the client edition and he should know what the fuck a client edition is.
 
Hmm, start-up is being different for me now. Takes a bit longer and the behaviour is different. With 10.6.0 everything was there at once - dock, menubar with icons and desktop files. Now it's like dock first then the menubar showing only the spotlight icon followed by the desktop files a few secs later and last but not least the menubar icons finally. Strange :/.........

To be fair, it's possible it was a fast restart in 10.6 for me, because I hardly ever restart my computer. Maybe once every 3-4 weeks or less.
 
I've dropped using firefox 3.5 until it speeds up a bit in a new release. It just feels so much slower than Safari 4 atm. I also have just gone through my first replacement battery. Not only did it barely hold charge, it took 3 hours to fully recharge again. Apple is sending me a replacement right now.

The battery was less than a year old. I have to say the quality of the old style MBP batteries is shit. Thankfully Apple has been replacing it each time I ask.

X3100 here, and it still sucks in the sense that Expose and even Show Desktop skip frames, where they were perfect 60FPS on original Leopard :\ Strangely, everything else feels about the same speed, or even faster, like the folder popups from dock.
 
Anyone elses mac running hotter after Snow Leopard? I have my temp displayed in the menu at all times and it is on average 10 degrees hotter after SL. My system used to be whisper quiet too with the fans only powering up to audible levels during flash movies and games. But now the fans are audible under normal every day use.

I don't really mind that much. After all, my system is about 30% faster than it was before. But then, I was never really complaining about my systems speed before SL either. So I dunno... My feelings on this can go either way. It will take me a good while to get used to my Air making noise all the time though.
 
not sure if this has been mentioned, but my torrent client is no longer working. i click start download and it finds all the connections and then i get the red x next to the download as if i need to start it again. it wont download anything. (using utorrent btw). i downloaded another torrent client and its doing the same. did snow leopard change something with ports? has anybody else been having troubles with their torrent clients? heeeelllpppp

You should probably tell us what client you're using :P Also, this is obvious, but have you tried everything to do with the torrents themselves, or the client first?

For example, if you only have torrents queued that use the same tracker that happens to be down or been removed from all trackers it lists, then you're not gonna get a connection to them.

i said i was using utorrent haha but yeah. i downloaded more torrents so i know its not cuz i deleted any files. they all seem to be doing this.
 
Oh shit, 10.6.1 killed the sound of my MacBook Air:

- Sound icon in top bar is grayed out, can't be used
- No sound output devices in Sound preference panel
- Sound sliders not working in Sound preference panel
- Mute box checked and grayed out in Sound preference panel

This seems to be a common problem, without a solution. I've tried already deleting the Sound plist files and restarting, no help.

I had the same kinda problem with Azureus - apparently it's to do with changes to the Java system of 10.6. I switched to Transmission as my torrent client and it's working fine - so give that a shot perhaps. Then you can get your Corbin Fisher at lightning speed once more!
 
I reinstalled Snow Leopard the other day, so far, everything is so much quicker. Id wager it was needed though, seeing as though the system has been running since the MacPro came out in August 2006, which meant I upgraded from Tiger > Leopard > Snow Leopard heh.

For people who were having my heat problem. i think I've fixed it.

Resetting the PRAM (command + option + P + R on boot) seems to have got my system down about 5 degrees and the fans are no longer constantly running.

Other way around. 32 bit has not many concessions for normal users, 64 bit will probably be the "standard" in 10.7.
 
In Safari, is there a way to change the default behavior for different file types? For example, clicking on an mp3 file automatically loads (quicktime plug-in) and the file plays in the browser. I'd like to have it download automatically. Firefox as an applications tab in preferences that can handle this.

Just for the information (I know it doesn't really solve your issue), but option+clicking a link will download the target.

Oops, sorry for the typos I meant 64. So if I'm not doing anything heavy there isn't much point going 64 in boot? (not to turn this to the OS X for n00bs thread but since I've already asked)

There's pretty much no point to using a 64-bit kernel at all, unless you really need applications to access more than 4GB of RAM at once.

In fact, unless all the extensions of all your apps and stuff are 64-bit also, you run the risk of more incompatibilities.

I doubt it'll be only 64 bit. I meant that I imagine it will boot the 64 bit kernel by default, when possible. Snow Leopard was pretty big audience cut, I doubt 10.7 will also neglect a big user base.
 
Alright..so my macbook decided it doesn't wanna read any cd/dvd's anymore and keeps spitting my snow leopard cd out after 20 secs or so...

Is there any other way to load snow leopard on there? My only other computer is a PC desktop.
 
This might be a stupid question but...

I upgraded the HDD in my MBP from a 120gig 5400rpm drive to a 320gig 7200rpm drive. I chose the 7200 because the specs said it only uses .05 percent more power than a 5400 drive.

Now my battery is lasting fuck all compared to my old drive. 3hrs was easy with the old Fujitsu 5400, but with this new drive I can practically see the percentage icon tick down.

The drive I replaced it with is a "Seagate Momentus 7200.4 ST9320423AS Hard Disk Drive, 320GB, 7200rpm, 16MB Cache, SATA-2"

And the blurb that sucked me in was "The Seagate® Momentus® 7200.4 drive delivers the highest available capacity and performance in a laptop hard drive and draw only .05 percent more power than a 5400-RPM laptop drive"

That's .05, or POINT ZERO FIVE of a percent. I shouldn't be able to notice the difference.

Can you get access to another Mac ? You can 'restore' the disc to a USB drive using disk utility. It doesn't erase the USB drive, and you can boot to it by holding down option when starting your Mac.

Remote Install works with Windows, doesn't it? It would be slow as hell though. (Since it's over the network and I don't know where to get the software for Windows. Apple.com I guess.)

Yeah dude it's still a 7200 RPM HDD. It's gonna need more juice to spin that fast. I'm sure there's some BS marketing in there but you gotta look at the manuals for the full specifications:

As you can see, that 0.05% power difference is when the disk isn't spinning. Sorry man, you fell for some BS marketing.
 
^ I might be able to get my hand on a macbook to try that out, but not sure when since I'd have to barrow it from a friend.

Would there be any way that I could remote install it with a PC as a guide? I tried following some steps after I put it in my PC, but when I hold ALT when restarting my macbook, it doesn't give me the option to. I can only choose to either have it boot from the mac hd or the windows one.

Edit: Thanks typo, I'm gonna try that out.

Shit, yeah you guys are right. I completely forgot about sharing an optical drive over a network. You can install SL with either a Windows PC or another Mac if you share the DVD drive.
 
Bleh...gotta wait till I clear up some hd space on my macbook before I try it. Transferring a lot of stuff to my external first.

Stupid question, but installing snow leopard won't wipe off everything from my HD and do a fresh install, will it?

Thanks, I couldn't find those specs.

That wasn't BS marketing, just more of an outright lie. I don't really care, I'm happy with the performance boost, just wondering what was going on.
 
so I ordered my MBP, iPod Classic, and wireless hp printer on sunday night, got the printer and mbp on thursday, ipod on saturday. Couldn't be happier, I have been impressed by everything other then the printer, and other then a couple things I havent had any trouble adjusting to Mac OS X

the iPod and MBP just feel like they are made of the highest possible standards, and its a little odd being a beginner at something computer related for the first time in 15 years, but its also fun. Now if I can actually get iTunes semi organized, the import went smooth but the id tags are messed up quite a bit.

Alright...I got it to start installing. I couldn't get it to find the stupid CD over the network at first, but after a little digging, I found that typing these two lines into the terminal helped me find it:

defaults write com.apple.NetworkBrowser EnableODiskBrowsing -bool true
defaults write com.apple.NetworkBrowser ODSSupported -bool true

So if anyone has a messed up optical drive...that should help. Says it's going to take about an hour to install...so I'll see how it goes.

EDIT: Nvm, fucking shit didn't work....says my HD is messed up? :lol

I was gonna mention earlier but I was at work. Same thing happened to me. Don't be sacred, you're fine, but remote installing didn't work.

If it's any help what I did was create an image of the DVD, and then use that to create a bootable external drive. That said I was lucky enough to have another Mac with which I could do that, and a spare external drive I could format. :\
 
This doesnt really have anything to do with Snow Leopard, but I love the trackpad gestures thing. Especiallt since the keyboard doesn't have a Home or End key. It's fantastic. Also, I miss being able to surf with a good computer from bed. =P
