yeah, basically you can get the free iPod touch or $229 off any iPod, I already have a 8GB iPhone 3G so i went with the 120gb classic

Congrats. Got any questions? How familiar with OS X are you and what made you bite the bullet?
My personal use with macs is limited and extremely out of date (circa 1995 in middle school). I used to do tech support for a national broadband company, so I have a very basic idea of how to navigate to system preferences>network and some other very basic things, but overall this will be a completely new experience

as far as why I bought now, well the laptop that I have been using is extremely outdated and I really needed a new one, and I have reinstalled windows 3 times this year, keep in mind I have a fairly decent level of windows knowledge. Just started back to college after a 7 year break to finish up my degree, and had student loan money left over (whenever it gets here lol).

Ah, cool. I figured you could but they only talked about the touch when I was looking at it.

Has there been any update on when the printers not supported under the Snow Leopard update will be included?

Printer support seems like such a basic thing, my HP (deskjet 3940) worked fine with leopard, and now an admittedly tiny update comes out and they remove support for the thing?

smh

I need my printer :(

Maybe I'm crazy, but I could have sworn I read on Apple's site that Snow Leopard added the extra multi-touch functions to older MBPs (ones that have multi-touch for scrolling, but not enlarging, etc.) I've installed, but I'm not seeing it.

Anyone know anything about this? Maybe I misunderstood.

I don't believe the older trackpads can actually track multiple touchpoints. THey can know that there are multiple touchpoints, but they lack the hardware to track them individually. IIRC, that was the reason why they did add it in the first place.

So since I've been having shitty weird permissions problems on my Macbook, and I learned I could just upgrade from Tiger straight to Snow Leopard via the cheap upgrade disc, I went to buy it.

SOLD. OUT. EVERYWHERE. D:

I'm sure its been covered before, but what are some things I should do as soon as I open up my MBP?

Just fuck around with it. Use iPhoto, Safari, iTunes, etc.

Use the features such as spaces, the dock, corners, expose, etc.

Than tweak your Mac (I.E. new desktop background, icon sizes)

Than get your preferable software (I.E. find the right web browser for you)

I'm happy with the general speed/responsiveness improvements so far - BUT! - the botched Adobe PDF Printer is a major bummer. Currently it's implemented as an Automator hack which doesn't work half of the time (on my machine).

Any gurus here with an idea if 1) Adobe will update with a proper PDF printer at some point and the current stance ("new security measures in the printer system makes PDF Printer impossible") is a temporary one, or 2) It won't be possible to create virtual printer drivers in Snow Leopard.

hm? are you talking about the built in PDF printer at the bottom of every printer prompt? whats wrong with it?

I'm about to upgrade right now but I need to clear some space off my hard disk - does anybody know how much space I need? The documentation (such as it is) doesn't say.

A couple of nights ago, my mid-2007 MBP's screen wouldn't turn on when I booted the laptop. Yesterday I went to the Apple store to get it checked out, but didn't know you had to reserve a spot first. I ended up walking out of the store with a new 15in MBP. Gaaah. Oh, but it came with Snow Leopard so I was somewhat happy with that.

On Tiger I used Camino, but currently using Safari 4 on Snow Leopard right now and it's actually pretty nice. I might end up just using that (until Chrome for Mac comes out).

Safari 4's the bee's. It's major Achille's Heel is gifs. So long as you can manage with that, which in SL is much much easier than Leopard, you'll be fine.

Sweet. I even still had the preferences file on my computer so all my prefs are still the same.

Anyone know how Migration Assistant works? Since my old MBP is able to boot up(but the screen won't turn on), can I just hook it up my new MBP and have the files transfer? Or will I need to confirm on the old MBP to allow the file transfer to go through? I hope I don't need to do anything on the old Mac so I can just transfer all my files without having to get my screen fixed first.

I think so... but I might have set up sharing permissions first. When I had that problem (screen not turning on), I used Jaadu on my iPhone to log in. Did you ever allow screen sharing on your Mac? nvm someone will pop in with a better answer

Anyway I managed to get a family pack today finally. But apparently you can't do a clean install? It never gave me the option anyway... If it didn't, I'll just do a clean install of Tiger and then do Snow Leopard on top of it I guess.

Put in the DVD, hold C on start up. The default, in-OS installer doesn't give the option, I believe.

That's what I did. I didn't even know you could start the installation from the OS.

Still no Clean or Archive options. I just set the disk to reformat using Disk Utility. Tell you what happens when it finishes. :p

Just do a Time Machine back up fir- oh wait. :p

Quick question. My professor knows I use my mac a lot and told me about this weird glitch he experienced last night with Snow Leopard. Apparently he saved a .pdf file to his downloads. He then tried to drag it to another folder. Well apparently it stuck to his mouse without him pushing anything and wouldn't go away unless he hit the ESC key. He could click other stacks and it would open that stack too.

Anyone encounter or ever here of this before?

Oooo. I like stacks.

Stacks, Spaces, faster Spotlight, Time Machine, Spaces, Safari 4. I can't imagine all that awesome being thrust upon me all at once.

Unclear what you mean exactly. Do you mean he clicked and let go, but the pdf stuck to his mouse? And that when he hovered over a stack it opened?

The latter part is normal.

For the former, I wonder if there's some accessibility feature that allows you to 'click to grab/drag', so you don't have to hold down.

Well I need to get a Time Capsule, so I can get the iMac and the Macbook sharing files nicely. I did use Safari 4 long enough to get my trusty old Camino back though. :p

Spaces seems weird, but I probably just haven't given it enough time to get it yet.

Installed it a couple days ago. Really like it. My only problem is I can't use the "mount it" option to mount toast image files anymore. Roxio says they will fix it when the new version of toast comes out. Anyone have any idea what I can do in the mean time?

Oh wow that's weird. No longer does the HDD icon appear on the desktop.

(Unsolved Mystery Song)

Odd. If you want to bring it back, click on the Finder icon, Preferences and it's under the General tab.

Nah, it makes the Desktop look much cleaner.

Expect me to be ooh-ing and aah-ing over things you've been using since Leopard's launch for the next little while tho. :p

Were you able to fix the screen problem? I'll try the Jaadu thing, but I'll have to use another person's iPhone since I don't have one.

I think they fixed the animated gifs problem on Snow Leopard. No more spindump and huge CPU usage last time I tried.

Which is why I mentioned it's better in Leopard. Very much so. More like an Achilles ingrown toenail now, but it's still not perfect, and it's still absolutely silly. I haven't encountered any beachballs or Safari hissy fits from them, but they still play at like, half speed.

What? No it's not. He can buy Snow Leopard like anyone else and its just as legal as me installing it.

I think he means that its against their terms of use - the $29 version of Snow Leopard is intended only for upgrading from Leopard. But who gives a shit, not like Apple checks or cares.

How do you get the hd icon on desktop to display GB used/free? I did it in Leopard but can't remember how.

Show View Options on the desktop (right click), and check the box for "Show Item Info"
