And it's actually way more straightforward than most Paradox grand strat games. Play a bit focusing on one mechanic then restart and focus on another. After a couple restarts it'll be easy. It google Crusader Kings quick start for a walk through that might help.

You die a lot and the checkpoints can be frustrating. It's hard like 90s games were hard, lots of repeating yourself to get it right. It's cool in that you can just change directions and you'll probably be heading towards a boss you haven't killed but no matter which path you're probably gonna die a lot and have to repeat your way through it.
Those are the type of games that I like.
Far Cry 3 is the "Press X to Jason" in terms of difficulty. It's not frustrating, just keeps getting stale in quick intervals.
