Anyone down to chat about something not directly related to hockey standings right now? It might be cool to drop a quick line about who is your favorite player currently, and who was your favorite player from the past.

Current: Marc-Andrew Fleury

I can still remember scratching my head at how amazing he was at the age of 18 in 2003. Hopefully his name becomes as famous as Martin Brodeur.

Former: Wayne Gretzky

You can't really say anything bad about this man. He is the reason why Hockey is so important to me. I remember crying during his final game. Sure I was just a kid, but I knew it was a very important moment.

Scott Stevens, hands down. Knocking fools out left, right and center with legal hits galore. Frankly, the only way I'd like him more is if he'd stopped acting all apologetic after every game when he tuned somebody up. Stay out of the train tracks, Eric!

anyway, we kick the stars out of the playoffs every time we play them, so i'd love to see them make the playoffs again

Me too! Considering all the injuries and how the first two months of the season went, I'd say making the playoffs would be huge for Dallas. It would just be more experience for all our young guys and could only be promising for the 09/10 season since most of the roster is already contracted through next year.

Besides, if the playoffs started today Dallas would have a pretty favorable first round match up against the Sharks. San Jose is going to win the season series this year but the Stars have been playing better and better against them all season. Modano is better than a point a game against the Sharks during his career and Turco is godly in that building. I don't think any hockey fan in Texas would turn down that match up at all. Dallas plays their final regular season game against San Jose this Saturday. Winning that game would help their cause greatly, especially if Detroit can beat Atlanta and the Flames this weekend as well.

If they can move up into 6th then we have a good chance at drawing Calgary... who has already lost to Dallas twice this season (3-1 both games and fairly uninteresting overall) with two games to go in the next two weeks.

If the Stars can stay the hell away form drawing Detroit or going on a tear and landing in 5th/4th (unlikely) then I like our chances for the first round of the playoffs. Of course, even if Dallas did draw Detroit then I'd say we were only a little less than 50/50 to move on since we did win the season series 3 games to 1.

All this is moot though if Dallas can't get in... which is a very real possibility unless we can get our power play working in some capacity until Richards makes it back into the line up.

Current: Roberto Luongo. Don't make me post all of the goalies we had between him and Kirk McLean. It's a terrible, terrible list.

All Time: Patrick Roy. Will always be the greatest goalie to ever play the game.

Roy was my runner up to Le Magnifique I loved his clutch play and style.

Current: Evgeni Malkin. Man is a beast.

Former: Petr Nedved. I still remember staying up late and watching him score that quad overtime game winner.

slept with Malkin
Current: Crosby. I think it's funny people rag on him all the time. but you would be stupid to deny the talent and skill he has.

All Time: Mario. Probably the greatest forward to ever play the game. I remember watching him when I was younger and just being awestruck. I don't think there was anyone that could dominate or take over a game like he could. It's crazy to think what he was able to do while playing with injuries and going through cancer treatment. The guy played a game right after his last chemotherapy treatment. Even when he was playing at 50%, he was still better than everyone else on the ice :lol

Anyway, Pens/B's game is pretty good so far.

Current: Stéphane Robidas. I love watching a good player on defense and he's been great the last two years for Dallas. Id put Zubov here in a heartbeat if he wasn't on IR however.

All time: Wayne Gretzky. Without him and his move to LA, it'd be hard to imagine a team in Dallas. His fame is very likely one reason for the early warm-ish reception for the Stars after their move from Minnesota.

Current: Pavel Datsyuk. The man has the hands of god. Probably the best stickhandler in the league. Also he is extremely funny, weird and humble, such a likeable guy.

Former: Can I say Peter Forsberg? In his prime he was amazing to watch, and he's produced some of the most memorable moments in Team Sweden's history.
But since he's still not 100% for sure retired, I'll say Steve Yzerman. Him and Fedorov were the big reasons I became a Wings fan back in the 90's. One of the greatest captain's ever.

Luckiest hat trick I've ever seen. Two of those goals basically just bounced off Kunitz.

Well, tied game again, at least. Fuck, Ryder can snipe.

All Time (or at least since I started watching): Trevor Linden. Superstars are great, and dazzling to watch and all, but my favorite players are the ones that exemplify leadership and grit.

Bruins manage to kill 6/8 (ugh) PPs and Thomas still gives up 5 goals. Fucking gross.

Kid's gonna be a beast. Y'know how players too often give up a turnover while trying to clear the pick on the PK? Schenn doesn't. He's incredibly cool under pressure.

Current: Ovechkin - best hockey player in the world, even better personality
Former: Rocket Richard - this man looked possessed when he played, craziest/most intense eyes ever

Current: Ovechkin. Way too awesome in everything he does.

Former: Lemieux and Bure. I swear Bure is the most underrated superstar of all time. People have forgotten him already :( #66 is just amazing and IMO better than Gretz ever was.

Current: Ovechkin

Former:In the 80s,Gretzky no doubt.I was young, but remember well what he did.90s,Lemieux.Best word for him, offensive weapon.Late 90s early 2000 years,Jagr. What hands man, unfreaking believable. And so much strenght to protect the puck.Jagr playing in todays game and rules at his best would probably earn him close to 160 points a season.Honorable mention to the russian rocket, what speed.Simply out of this freaking world.

Remember his first game,he did not score, but about 5 breakaway in the game.just amazing :lol

Current: Pavel Datsyuk. Really this guy is just so fun to watch. Even when playing defense you can see him try to do crazy shit with the puck. I've seen him pick off passes that were 3 ft in the air while going full speed.

Former: Has to be Yzerman. So many memories.

Bure was probably the most exciting player in the history of the NHL

Favorite players... I'm not a homer, but I gotta pick two Bruins.

Current: Marc Savard. He's really improved in the few years he's been with the Bruins, turning into a three-zone player with much more discipline. Absolutely one of the best passers in the league, a great skater, and can score some nice goals when he's not giving up the puck to someone else.

All-time: Cam Neely. One of the ultimate power forwards, with the ability to score a stunning goal and absolutely beat the shit out of someone in the same game. He was never the same after that cheap hit to the knee from Ulf Samuelsson in the '91 play-offs, but he still managed to score 50 goals in 44 games in his return season. He's also a hell of a humanitarian off the ice, and still plays a big role (VP) in the Bruins front office.

shitting in the alley outside your window
Preds probably need to go about 8-5 to get in the playoffs against this schedule:

Kings (2x)
Ducks (2x)
Sharks (2x)
Wings (2x, both at the joe)
Blue Jackets (2x)
Blackhawks (2x)
Wild (away)

oof

everyone in the West currently choking except for Vancouver (and DET, NAS)!

for those of you that are superstitious and wanting to strangle me, i´ll be sure to acknowledge that: this is, really, meaningless. it takes one game to turn things around and everyone is in a dangerous position vis-a-vis the canucks.

allow us to decide if you are a homer or not, homer

CURRENT: Alexander Ovechkin. In my mind, the best player in the league, supremely exciting, and full of personality. He´s the best thing to happen to the NHL since Pavel Bure.

ALL-TIME: Mario Lemieux. I think I saw more of Lemieux in his prime than Gretzky. THUS, I have more memories attached to him, especially during the two consecutive Cup runs. He was just so intelligent, much like Gretzky, but also had a nose for the net. For that reason, he´s scored some of the most exciting goals in NHL history.

that doesnt strike me as a particularly difficult schedule, but just something typical of the west. and think of it this way: it might be better to be playing against detroit and san jose down the stretch instead of st. louis or edmonton.

vancouver actually has it quite easy. e.g. four games against colorado. the problem is that, and i may be wrong about this, vancouver hasnt beaten them yet this year! game-by-game, especially at this time of the year, no game should by any more or less likely a win or loss. granted, i wouldnt want to be playing detroit twice at home

Current: Malkin

Former: Lemieux, easily. Just never knew what was going to happen when he was on the ice. But I would be remiss without giving a shout out to Ronnie Francis. Dude was super solid.

2 points in the bank. 8-0-2 in our last 10 games. Let's keep going, boys...

I will chime in on the "favourite players" debate.

Current: Sidney Crosby. Incredible work ethic, poise under the spotlight, great hockey sense, and a tenacious attitude. Even during a season where everyone and their grandmother are bitching about him, he's quietly going about his business and racking up the points, while leading his team to a potential playoff spot.

All-time: Mario Lemieux. Yep, I'm a homer and this is a predictable choice, but no one did what he did, on and off the ice. A true inspiration. I cried when he retired. Honourable mentions: Jagr, Francis, Yzerman, Crosby (already), Brodeur, Bure, Federov.

Current - Jeremy Roenick. The Hawks were my team until Ottawa got a team (My hate for the leafs carried over from the Hawks) but J.R is still my favourite. I am hoping the Sharks can get him a Cup this year. Ovie Get's 2nd though.

Former - Paul Coffee. Smooth as silk. I always tried to skate like he did.

Pavel Bure's easily my 2nd favourite player. Balls-out exciting to watch, blazing speed and control, and had a nasty streak for a superstar. In fact, watching Bure sideswipe Shane Churla into oblivion with The Mother of All Elbows™ is right up there with Turco's sad face post-2007 first round knockout for my all-time favorite Vancouver/Dallas moment.

I agree, everytime I see Ovechkin I almost think he is a slight mutation of Bure, with more grit.

Also, if I could give a shoutout to a 2nd fav player of all time, I thinking defensemen here, and I have to give a double tie to 2 guys.... Ray Bourque and Paul Coffey.

I think there is only one guy from this current generation that can hold either of those guys jock straps, and this is #5 wearing the red wing wheel on his jersey...

Wooo Sharks first to 100 points and first to clinch a playoff spot since Detroit has played 2 more games! Now its all about battling for first overall.

Robert-GCA said:
I'll repeat, Detroit has played 2 more games than the Sharks have. Technically Sharks did it first.
Technically you're wrong. The Sharks did it in fewer games, but Detroit was the first team in the NHL to reach 100 points this season.

So your gonna put it on a time zone difference I see. They did it on the same day with games starting at the same time withing their time zones. The best argument you can make is that they did it at the same time being on the same day.

I can't list two players. Until the day Modano retires, he is my favourite player. He is the Franchise, and an integral reason for why I love Dallas and hockey in general.

Also, he's hitting Willa Ford! You won't find a hotter pussy then that unless someone sets one of the Sedin Twins on fire
