Official Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater Thread

OK, I have a question about the battle against The End.
I was trying to save during the fight, but Paramedic told Snake that he really shouldn't save. Snake asked why, and she said she just had a bad feeling about it or something. Has anyone else experienced that? I saved anyway, but nothing happened as far as I know (I never restarted and loaded the save file though).

I saw the same thing, and knew to take Kojima's threats seriously. :)

What I feared is that I'd start back on the prison bed just like when you're fatally sniped during the battle. So I just sucked it up and took 2 hours to beat him(I refused to use any radars or thermal goggles). It nearly broke my spirit when he drained "lifeforce" from the jungle to fill up his meter half way again.

Such a sadistic yet cool boss battle.

How much of the game is left after beating The Fury? Hours and/or % wise...

And please use spoiler tags, just for everyone else that may not want to know.

Id say maybe about 8 hours
If I remember correctly.

The Fury was easily my favorite Cobra member by far btw. That fight was great and the lead in and conclusion knocked my socks off.

Gorey pretty much got it bang on. If you save and quit mid-way through the fight and then load the data, you'll find you've already been "knocked out" and in the Lab's holding cells.

When I did that and loaded the game back up it was night time and raining hard. So it makes it really hard to hear him talking, breathing ect. and its hard to see him.

Best game of the year.
Best game of the generation.
Best game ever.

Oh yes.

Just finished MGS3. 28~ hours total. Playing since monday. Average of 7 hours a day...and I want more. Good God, this game makes MGS2 look so bad. MGS2 isn't even worthy of its name when compared to the glorious number 3. Kojima didn't just exceed my expectations, he obliterated them. I bow to HIDEOS. I wonder how exactly does he expect to top this.

Also, best graphics ever.

I beat the game for the first time Wednesday (started playing on Saturday).

It took me 23:01.57 to finish.
336 enemies killed.
My encounter with The Sorrow took a long time.
:)
Code Name: Shark.

I'm currently replaying the game now to hit all of the frogs and collect the camo/face paint that I missed the first time around. I'm also trying to avoid killing so many guards this time around, the game made me feel guilty on my first go around.

Question:
Did anyone unlock the "Cold War" camo by draining Volgin's stamina? Am I right to assume that that is the Half-American/Half-Soviet flag camo design from the E3 2003 trailer?

Overall I thought the game was fantastic, top to bottom. Although the game started off a little slowly (Did we really need to see the whole Virtuos Mission briefing right in the middle of the HALO jump?) and the early cut-scene introducing Volgin and the Cobra unit seemed a little off (some stiff voice acting hurt, plus the fact that the Cobras are bizarre even by Metal Gear standards) but things picked up very nicely once you get into the meat of the game. I thought Ocelot's character was especially well done; watching him being steadily molded into the villian we know from MGS1 and MGS2 was a great paralell to watching
Snake being shaped into Big Boss
.

I was also relieved to see Kojima how handled the backstory on the Patriots. I was afraid going in that he would be overly concerned with addressing their mysterious origins and that it would take away from the game's focus(and drawing unecessary attention to MGS2's convoluted story). I think a good balance was struck in keeping their backstory mostly behind the scenes while still paving the way for their future role in the series.

EDIT: Psycho, you add spoiler tags the same way you normally bold and quote text. [s*poiler] xxx [/s*poiler] though obviously without the asterix.

Nice. That's more than I expected.

I thought the character's 'story' was pretty weak, though kind of interesting. The fight itself was awesome in every way.

The Sorrow scared the shit out of me at first...I didn't know what the fuck to do and I kept trying to shoot all the dead guards. Then I looked around to try to use the death pill to kill me. :lol

I finally realized that all I could do was keep walking, then the bastard hits me with his whirlpool looking thing. Then I learned to avoid it, and kept walking and walking and walking. Then he says something like "Time to wake up..." and all of a sudden there's this huge "ARRRRRRRRRRRRGHH!!!" and I'm like "FUCK, I died :(" I was wrong, and I awoke in the water.

I'm about 18 hours away from my rental time being done...so I'll try to beat it another time before I have to take it back. This should be fun. :)

I've found this camo
mgs06.jpg

And this hat
mgs02.jpg

at the swamp with crocodiles area. I'm happy.

I was reading that you get stealth camo for shooting all the frogs, but I just got it on my second playthrough without shooting them. I'm not sure if it was because I beat it twice in a row or because I never went into alert mode the second playthrough. I wonder if I will get anything else if I shoot the frogs or maybe they are useless now?

Does anyone know what cardboard box C is for?

Geez, what did you do? Kill everyone that came in front of you? :P
I wouldn't be surprised if I'll have killed more. Even when I tranq, I'll bend down and knife them to death just to be sure that they don't surprise me later. I'm crazy like that. :)

i'm currently fighting volgin...is there a faster way to beat him than just duking it out with him? i can wear him down but the time limit screws me

My kills number was over 300 too. Then again I interrogated pretty much EVERY soldier I encountered and ended up slashing their throats every single time. The Sorrow's river was an interesting ride. :P

I love how Kojima makes fun of himself. Gotta give him some respect. Did anybody call the major after getting into Raikov's costume?

Snake: "Hmm...I think this looks good on me. I think this look will be popular in the future."

Major Zero: "I wouldn't bet on it."

the best is when you call eva:

eva: you can do anything you want now!
snake: even punch someone in the face
eva: yeah
snake: REALLY?
eva: really.

CQC him and then blow him away with the shotgun. The fight will end quickly.

Haha, yes. There's a lot funny moments in here, more than in MGS1 and 2. On an unrelated note, the poster girls are much hotter than the HIDEOS beasts from Konami Eyes, too.

No worries about spoiler tagging stuff or anything, guys. Seriously, its ok. Not like we've been doing it for 11 pages now or anything.

Now if I know jett, and I think I do!, he'll tell me to "relax" and how he "barely spoiled anything". :P

I don't remember if it was mentioned but call Sigint after
the nightmare in the cell for a really weird conversation, also call him after you meet Granin for a conversation about how absurd walking tanks are.

Holy fucking shit I just, after killing myself, accidentally and simultaneously pressed the analog stick and circle..... Exit. Which wouldn't be so bad. Only I hadn't bother saving for days since I haven't turned off my PS2. I think I'm just going to start a new game.

See, that's why you have Are You Sure? Yes/No during critical choices. For freak shit like this

Fuck well I just got owned.

Been playing Hard + trying to not kill anyone. When I reached
the sorrow
it turns out I had drowned someone and that person counted against me.

just have a question about the deserted factory area at the beginning of the game:

after i got to the deserted factory to rescue Sokolov for the first time, i interrogated a soldier and he told me "there is something on the northeast window". So i went back to Sokolov's room after the cutscene and looked at the window in first personal view. All of a sudden, i heard a sound of an item dropping off. Then I checked everywhere but I didn't see any item at all... did anybody actually find the item? and what is it?

One thing that still bothers me is at the end of the virtuous mission when
Volgin nukes the whole area, and yet everything is intact when you return during the Snake Eater mission a week later? Did he miss by a huge margin or what? And also, since it's nuclear...shouldn't it be VERY dangerous to hang around in that area since it's just a week later, with it being polluted and all? Or weren't they aware of the effects nuclear pollution has on humans during the 60's? :P

I think that they were aware of the effects of nuclear in the 60's, since you latter learn that The Boss was expose to some in the past. Consequence? She is now sterile... And now, so is Snake, Eva and Ocelot...

Yah she mentions that she was put on a certain mission because she'd been exposed to it before. That's why Snake was sent back out there. They seemed to be trying to show just how loyal he was to his country before he turned. He was close to being dead a week before, and then a week later he's back out in the field trying to complete a mission.

Damn, I don't want this game to end...

I'm about 12 hours in and currently sitting in jail (after a rather long scene, which rocked). I hope there is a decent amount left...

Er, uh...sorry if I spoiled anything important, I don't think I did. Either way, you should stay away from this thread until you finished the game, like I did. :P

The CQC him and use your tranq gun.

jett and KillbyBill, how many animals/plants did you capture?

I captured 30 different species...I don't know if that's high or low. Low, probably. :P

I managed to kill 301 guards and caused 117 fatal injuries (Im guessing that is when you make someone unconcious) i got a lot of alerts so i ended up killing so many guards by mainly using CQC

OK, I loaded from the prison cell today and...

What the hell was up with that brawler/beat-em-up game with swords? I was some random character that I couldn't identify fighting in a barn/warehouse area against tons of bizarre looking characters (creatures) wearing police uniforms. After a certain number of hits, my character became super charged and started kicking tons of ass. The controls were actually really good and the framerate was 60 fps, plus everything was colored in sepia tones. It was actually very cool, but left me totally confused. Eventually everything faded out and Snake woke up from a dream in his cell.

What's with that?

One crazy easter egg is what it is :P

Sort of off topic from the main game, but is anyone else hopelessly addicted to getting the best time in the Snake vs Monkey levels? I am...!

jett and KillbyBill, how many animals/plants did you capture?

I finished up with 39 types of plants/animals captured and 110 meals eaten. I'm going to try and capture more my second time around and try to avoid just stocking up on Russian Rations and Instant Noodles.

I was going to ask the same thing. :) They're actually pretty tough though, so far I've only been able to earn the best time on the first level and the only other one I've come close with is the third level. At least I was able to unlock that HIDEOS Monkey mask. :lol

Finished the game last nite at 3:00 am... I am totally out of my mind right now at work. This is definitely my #1 game for this gen. The last 4 hrs of the game is so fucking good that I can't put down the controller. I felt like I am the greatest hero in the greatest action movie ever in those 4 hrs. Kojima is the god. The story's ending is very satisfing. The Boss is the coolest female character ever in videogame. This game has the #1 emotional impact on me as a game and it has the same magnitude as any other real good books or movies that I have experienced. This game has a befitting end to the triliogy. Love it.

just stayed up all night and beat the game. fucking hell. i'm too sleepy to post anything coherent. but this game rox. it's the realization of the tremendous potential mgs has always had and squandered to one degree or another. probably goty. i'm faintly depressed by the prospect of moving on to other games. maybe i'll just replay it on hard. i certainly want to play the whole end sequence
from the volgin fight onward
again, at least to pick up on some of the details i was too sleepy to appreciate.

what do you reckon kojima's going to do for mgs4? i'd really like to see mgs3's outdoor environments and general gameplay style return. i think it'd be cool to see the story of the original metal gear retold. a young solid snake going up against big boss would be amazing, given the first three mgs games as background.

maybe they should make that into a game.

I've read that it's supposed to taken from an unannounced KCEJ game called "Tirn Aill" - or something like that. There are posters containing that title + artwork all over the larger bases in the game too...

Ok I just beat The Pain BUT....

I got nailed with a bullet bee wound! It's a wound that is slowly draining my health away and there is nothing I can do to cure it! I saved and quit so hopefully the downtime will allow the wound to heal!

Eh, you can still cure it like any other bullet wound (I think, but it's still curable)

Yeah, I was thinking that same thing now. Before, I was against the idea of that game being remade, but it can be a merger of MG and MG2:SS and show more behind-the-veil things like why Big Boss favored the underdog and treated Liquid the way he did. It could go back and forth and finally end with him being burnt to a crisp by his son. I imagine the bandana he wears is the same as BB's.
