Official Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater Thread

This has been bothering me...

Why do I keep wanting to look around while in 1st person, w/ the right analog stick? I could've sworn you were allowed to use the right analog to look around, instead of the left in MGS2:SoL.

Did they change that?

No, that's how it's always been. You're probably used to playing Halo or something. :P Speaking of which, I personally can't stand dual analog controls, because my right thumb is just not used to doing precise aiming. I'm glad MGS3 aims with the left stick. :P

:lol If you guys haven't tried it, go to the bridge at the beginning of the game and start cutting the ropes and then trick some gaurds into coming onto it and start shaking it back and forth. Lots of fun to be had. :P

Hehe, I was actually hoping you could cut the bridge entirely (and have some alternate route to take on the way back). That would've been even cooler. :D

Someone mentioned earlier that you can R1 scenes in the ending. Here are the 2 scenes I noticed you can do it in:

When the president reaches out to shake Snake's hand you can hold R1 and watch and Snakes hand slowly goes into shake his hand.

The other is at the Boss's grave, when Snake salutes you can hold it there and you look out into the graves. The screens is really blurry due to Snake crying. I didn't see anything but there might be something there.

There is something else in that first scene you mentioned, if you just look to your left...

If you look over to your left, Ocelot walks up to the window and points at Big Boss. Like an "I gotcha". And he did once you hear the end conversation.

!

Ok this all makes sense now. I gotta do this end part again to see! :D

I thought that was Ocelot's voice at the end communication after the credits rolled!

This game has so many cool touches to it. Amazing.

I just got the game so I'm leary of reading through the thread so forgive me if this has been addressed before... is there no 5.1 sound in the game? All I see in the instructions is Pro Logic.

Does anyone know a trick to rip the codec conversation text like like that guy who did the Metal Gear Solid 2 Ending Analysis? That would be awesome...

I ripped the MOVIE.DAT file. It contains all FMV (which aren't that many, since all cutscenes are in realtime) plus some demo (probably from the training mode). I will try to extract the chapters individually, but the file is really weird. MPEG-2? Is this a standard VOB file?

They really packed the game with more little details than there was in MGS2, and that had alot. They're also cooler than the ones in that one. The R1 function is something that needs to be in the series from now on also.

R1: Just take a look at The Sorrow “helping” (or stressing) you near the end, displaying the time left before the C3 detonation... I need to capture this!

Ok I just cleared the game and finally read through everything in this thread. (I've been avoiding this place like the plague)

I can honestly say that this has been one of the most enjoyable gaming experiences I've ever had. The boss battles were amazing, the cut scenes enjoyable and tons of secrets that makes me play this game over again.

Best game ending EVAR!!! 10/10

They've abandoned 5.1 Dolby Digital during cutscenes, to give us Pro Logic II throughout the game.

I applaud them for it, as the surround effects and multi-channel soundtrack in gameplay are damn impressive.

I have to say this game has the fourth best ending of any game I've ever played...

04) Metal Gear Solid 3
03) ICO (I'm a sucker for sad endings)
02) Final Fantasy VII (So many would disagree with me on this one and I may hate it after watching AC)
01) Final Fantasy X (See Number 3)

I'd like to see a feature in the next MG where you can kill a guard, take his radio and call off a search in an area, or report in that everything is ok.

I'm not sure if you know this but in MGS 3
you can interrogate the guards and one of things they will sometimes tell you is frequencies you can contact to call off alerts. There is also at least one frequency that can be used to call in fire support.
.

Just finished. Awesome game.

If Ocelot is really a CIA operative, than was he basically "insurance" for the govt. in MGS2? Or was he actually going along with Solidus (who was president "George Sears" before he started Sons of Liberty)?

He was working for the president in MGS, but already knew about The Patriots... and then liquid's arm took over to go get The Patriots at the end of MGS2. I wish I picked up on the ADAM/Adamska thing. One hell of a final plot twist.

I'll probably try to replay it over Christmas break and get a better ranking than crocodile. :lol

I thought they were shooting for 5.1 in game. But I agree, I'd rather have pro logic throughout.

DPL2 is essentially a 5.0, while the subwoofer activates when there are low frequency sounds that it can play (it's not triggered speciffically like other 5 speakers). The thing is, the game just has really good sound effects and makes really good use of surround in both cutscenes and gameplay - and I don't mean the technology, but how it's used - the overall effect that is accomplished, which very few games do well (it's more of a thing that DVD movies do really good).

i never got the fire support frequencies to work. i'm not even sure what they're supposed to do.

I dont' know how many FS frequencies there are but each will only work once. I used it up in the mountains and it called in an airstrike that took out most of the enemies on the map. The frequencies may be linked to the areas that you find out about them so they might not work on other maps.

It worked for me once. During a no-alarm situation (didn't work during an alarm situation). What it does is just a bombardment of the area around Snake.

has anyone gotten all 64 frogs?

and if so:
how's the stealth camo? is it actually like the active camo in the past 2 games? and was it exceedingly difficult to get the frogs? (especially the ones during the motorcycle chase)

Adamska? Don't you mean Shalasaska?

I'm pretty sure that in the fight on the WIG plane between Ocelot and Big Boss, Ocelot asks Snake (Big Boss) what his name is. Snake says "John," and Ocelot mentions it being a dull name. Then he says his name is "Adamska" (or I thought he did). He passed himself off as "ADAM" to everyone (not sure who the actual ADAM was supposed to be).

As for the other stuff, I'm aware Solidus (George Sears) was the president in MGS that Ocelot was working for, I just don't remember exactly from MGS2 if Ocelot was actually following Solidus in fighting against the Patriots (with the rest of the Sons of Liberty) or was still an "operative" so to speak. I remember he capped olga in the skull and then Liquid's arm took over and he jacked a metal gear, but the rest of the plot points are hazy after not playing it in three years.

Other interesting stuff:

ADAM and EVA wait for "Snake."

EVA uses a Chinese facsimile of a Hauser handgun. You find out she was working for China.

There's probably other stuff I'll pick up on if I complete a second run through. You miss a lot the first time.

Last thing - what is the specific method for getting a crocodile head? I never actually bothered with it in my initial run through the game. Do you just tranq. the crocs and then knife them or do something else?

Re: Ocelot's real name :

Shalasaska

I'm fairly certain that was just a nickname given to him in the first two metal gears. Something about him fighting in the middle east and that was the name the middle easterners knew him by.

i got it in the swamp; i had to go north, then west, then south again, then climb a tree, then traverse a wire, then drop back down.

Just to clarify but it was Solidus who capped Olga in the head with the P-90, not Ocelot. He was too busy messing up the GW mainframe in the meantime but he was a Patriot operative from beginning to end in MGS2.

Yeah, it was a nickname he earned during his days in Spetznaz. I think it translated to "Human Torture Prison" because of his obsession and joy in the art of interrogation and torture. Something he obviously got from Volgin.

quick question:

i'm 11 hrs into the game, just killed
The Fear
. Where can i get the croc hat? I really want to try that out, but I can't seem to find one. If it will come later in the game, just say so. No spoiler please.

OK, I give up...
How do I get out of the cell in Graznygrad?
You can fake death with the pill and then jump the guard when he comes to investigate *or* you can use the frequency that the Sorrow provided if you saw him in the previous cutscene

There's one more R1 scene in the ending, which IMO is the best one, and probably would've worked really good as part of the regular ending.

I won't spoil it, just hold R1 after you kill The Boss and wait for it.

Is it difficult to get all of the frogs? Damn right it is.
Several of the chase frogs require you to snipe a moving target with either the SVD or RPG-7 with a time window of 4 seconds or less, and that's if you even see them. You can save in the beginning of each new area of the chase, but the sheer repetition needed for some of the frogs is insane.

Toymachine228: There is also the Johnny solution:
Every time the guard throws you some food, pick it up and throw it back through the slot in the cell door. After the third one, Johnny gives you the family history...but check the back of the photo.

Croc Hat: Only found in
the water area with two exits and crocodiles swimming through it. You have to climb the tree in the far northwest, hang from the cable until you're overtop of another cable, do the drop-catch, and then follow the second cable to the platform with the hat.

It's not really that useful or as funny as the Monkey hat, but ymmv.

Ocelot IS ADAM. That's the shocking fact. He hasn't passed himself off as ADAM, he was ADAM right from the beginning... He probably was given new mission objectives and was asked not to interfere between Tatyana and Snake. Of course that was probably all part of the american plan...

Come on, I used R1 everytime I could and I don't remember what exactly is displayed during that sequence... Maybe I have a shitty memory for playing too much Taiko Drum Master afterwards... ?_?

Eh, when the flowers turn red, just hold down the freaking button

I guess I'll spoil it for you, but I recommend others to see it for themselves:

I guess it's not much for some, but it was emotional to me. You see the spirits of The Sorrow and The Boss, smiling at Snake, and vanishing together.

Interesting... You were right, I haven't seen it but since I've lend my PS2 to my girlfriend, it is impossible for me to experience it before tomorrow evening...

Was the R1 icon (on the top right corner of the screen) showed during that scene?

I've been skimming though this HUGE thread since I just finished the game yesterday, but I don't think I've seen this posted yet.

Has anyone noticed that you can get extra scenes in some cutscenes depending on what gear you have equipped at the time? So far I've only noticed one, but there's probably more.

For the one I found, before the intro cutscene for
The Fury
equip the N.V.G. and trigger the scene. You'll get a few more shots of Snake's point of view including an R1 shot.

Uh, no. The R1 icon never appears in the ending.

Thirsty Fly, that's pretty cool, I guess I'll try some combinations on a next playthrough.

BTW, did anyone else think MGS3 was very easy, specially the bosses? I'm playing on hard and I virtually see no difference from normal mode. Hell, if you are trying to get their camos its even easier, you can get 3 shots in a row. :P In MGS2 you got more sentries, in MGS3 you get the same number. I see people complaining about the difficulty and I just don't get it. :P

Just beat the game. Easily one of my favorites this gen. I'm thinking personal GOTY.

I'm a little confused, and I'll probably be ridiculed for even asking this, but who the hell is the "Director" Ocelot is talking to at the very end? I understood everything else, but when he said director at the end, with the music playing a "this is important" type trumpet sound, I said to myself, "Director who?" I probably just missed it. There was a lot of story to take in. And if it's a reference to another solid game, well then I haven't played either of the other games in a long while.

I wasn't sure if I should start another thread (something tells me that I shouldn't) but a friend of mine gave me one of these:

OMG, I didn't know these things were real, and I'm not sure many of you folks do. So I decided to take a picture for everyone to see.

I haven't opened it up yet, but I plan to have a taste of it when my stamina is getting low. :lol

Jett, its pretty easy even on hard. You should try extreme when you get a chance though, they changed patrol routes and added guards. For example I just got to the section right after
you escape from prison in northwest Grazni Grad near the sewer entrance
and its flooded with guards covering most routes now, it took me ten or so tries to get past there unseen.

Most bosses are still easy but atleast
The Fury
is no longer a complete push over (he can kill you in two or three hits, constantly flies around after you hit him a few times and you have no AP sensor).

Probably already mentioned: The single funniest animation scene in the game can be found by
leaving the tracking device injury in place until you meet EVA behind the waterfall. It's a kind of rough one to leave though, as extra guards will pop up basically in every area until you make it there.

Who's also the Director of the CIA and the man who gives Snake the medal and rank of Big Boss during the ending.

Now that I think about it, during the last battle
with The Boss, I was crawling around and met a strange snake: it was all white, very similar to the snake The Boss's scar turns into once she's dead, but it happened during the confrontation, not after that. Anyway, I didn't have tranq ammo at the time so I had to kill the animal to get it. He was referred to as "Solidus Snake" IIRC. Shame on me I didn't try to eat it nor ask Para-Medic about it but I wonder if there are any secrets reletated to that snake.

Probably not.
There are three snakes in the battle: Solidus, Solid, and Liquid. Each of them is only found at that point in the game, and they are all unlisted in Paramedic's records. They are also pretty much the best food in the game.

Now, the only possibility would be throwing on at The Boss....
