LeClair, who entered the lockout due $9 million US in the final year of a five-year contract

How in the FUCK was John Leclair making 9 million in a season?? Wow. I knew he was overpaid.. but I had no idea he was THAT overpaid.

Morozov wont be back, he signed a guaranteed contract with a Russian super league team. I don't even know if the Pens would have signed him. Crosby will be on the top line with Lemiuex and probably someone like beech or Malkin. Then they will have Malone and Recchi on the second line.

The really exciting thing is that the pens are really below the salary level. They HAVE to go and spend some money. Their offensive d is pretty much set with Jackman and Tarnstrom on the PP. Orpik is turning into a stud, Ryan Whitney will make the team this year as well (former 5th overall D-man). The biggest problem wouldn't be luring Kovalev back to pittsburgh, it would be finding him a spot on the Power Play 1st unit. God Fantasy hockey is going to be fun this coming year.

Watching that power play sure is going to be fun. I am putting a money bet right now that Lemieux feeds crosby at least 2 homerun passes that turn into spectacular goals in the first game, especially now that the red line takes away 2 line pass.

Oh, the goalie situation will be fine. Caron isn't really that good, its just we are stuck with him for 2 more years (although giving up on him might mean Patrick Lalime part 2)

Marc-Andre Fleury is going to be a stud as well. People keep ragging on him, but keep in mind that the kid is 20 years old. He'll be our starting goalie opening night.

One thing I do know is that people like Rico Fata, Guilliame Lefabve and better pack their bags now.

I think the pens have come out and said theyre payroll will be 30ish million.... which is quite a bit if you look at their team right now.

Haha, Leclair was one of the most overpayed players a couple of years ago, pretty much the entire length of his last contract he was grossly overpaid considering his injuries and rapidly declining production. Long term contracts to aging power forwards are just so risky, look at how overpaid Tkachuk was that one year. Going to be weird for guys like Leclair, Tkachuk etc going from over 5mil to probably around 1 as they're all pretty old now and coming off a couple of lackluster years followed by a lost season. How do you even guess how effective those >33 year olds are going to be now?

Is that really true about Morozov? If it is then I'm sadened because he really seemed to be coming into his own at the end of last season.

Still, a second line consisting of Recchi, Malone, and Kraft at centre would be pretty nice.

I heard Sundin is trying to convince Forsberg and Naslund to sign with Toronto...

DOES THIS EVER END?

This sounds like a ridiculous rumor spawed by the king of bogus rumors -- "Eklund" the "hockey insider". Has that moron ever been right?

The Toronto media market is the third or fourth biggest and most competitive in North America. As a result, it results in the same stupid ass "EVERYONE WANTS TO BE A LEAF!!" rumours that you see with the New York media idiots and the Yankees.

That doesn't give a free pass to Leaf fans though, who by and large are total idiots. One only needs to remember the Conan shows that were taped here to know how fucking brainless and cult-like Leaf fans can be.

This thread has been a laugh riot BTW...been catching up on the last few pages, and the entertainment value is as high as the NBA thread. I just hope the entertainment value on the ice is as good, cause that for me has been the biggest issue the last few years. If they can stick to calling obstruction all the way through, I think that would help things tremendously.

Have any Canuck fans out there heard any rumors about Scott Neidermayer? Supposedly they're a front runner to land Neids since he's from B.C. I don't know what Vancouver's cap situation is like but his agent is asking for the 7.8M max contract. I know the Devils will never pay that; they have too many good young defensemen in the orginazation (Paul Martin, David Hale, and Matt DeMarchi) and will need the money to fill out the roster.

I've been basically preparing for his departure since his Norris Trophy "farewell speech." If he has to leave I hope he goes to the Canucks, they're about as far away from Jersey as possible. I know the Flyers have made him a priority and I'd hate to go against him at least 8 times a year. Though Hitchcock's defensive system would probably play to his strength as much as the Devils'.

Is that really true about Morozov? If it is then I'm sadened because he really seemed to be coming into his own at the end of last season.

I'm sure Crosby will make you forget all about Aleksey "Devil Killer" Morozov. That guy always seemed to have a fire lit under him when playing NJ. Any word on when the new shcedule will be released? I need to line up tickets to see the phenom at the Meadlowlands.

It's good for the game to have the Penguins relevant again. It was disturbing and a shame to see a few lean years cause the franchise to completely bottom out. But now with Fleury, Malkin, and Crosby they will have a very strong young core to build around. That should be enough to make the team competitive get them a new facility.

It's made me sick for so long that teams like Pittsburg and NJ have had such a hard time getting new arenas. These are teams that have won 5 Cups combined! Meanwhile, the miserable Coytoes get a brand new arena and only have to pay $40M out of their own pocket.

I'm sure Niedermayer rumors have showed up in the paper at least once or twice, but I gather that the papers are going to need some time to get back up to speed with mongering. I know back in the original strike optimism it was thought Kariya was a sure thing for the team.

kevin lowe on messier...

"It's his last year for sure and I think he wants to keep playing to break Gordie Howe's games-played record. But knowing how competitive he is, how players get rejuvenated in a new place and how we have a young, exciting team, it may push him over the top to a pretty decent year."

=(
wtf
Hes talking like they already have him signed
god no

Yeah, it is true about Morozov he signed a deal before the CBA came down. He figured he could make more money over there, and was actually the 4th leading scorer in the Russian super league, with guys such as I. Kovachuk over there.

Personally I thought it was too little, too late with him. He had a good year in 03, but He has been underachieving for 10 years now.

They've got to spend about $18 million to get up to $30 million, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

That is a lot of players.

Messier + Edmonton = match made in heaven.

Don't fight it dem, it's destiny! Curtain call for the Moose, one last year where he can use his name and front-office accumen to force his oldass into quality PP time he doesn't deserve. And then he can meddle in the locker room and ingratiate himself with the coaches and owners while alienating half the players... I for one don't see a downside at all.

Hmm, at this point Messier is pretty much HHH isn't he.

Messier on the powerplay, that brings it back to even strength. Then again you don't want him on the ice any other time because the play may go into his end and he hasn't found that in years.

BTW when is NJ getting a new arena? No offence but that is the worst arena to watch a game from on tv. The lighting is so bad it's like I'm watching a b&w tv.

What the hell is this:

While this might be great for you, this is bad for the NHL. For Sidney to go to a small market team, not a media center or not a big image team like the Rangers or the Kings or the Blackhawks...

Who says something like that?

What the hell have the Rangers, Kings or Blackhawks done in the past 5 years? The Rangers have had Jagr, Lindros, Kovalev, Messier, Bure, etc etc in the past few years - and who the hell gives a crap? Nobody cares about the Rangers. They are practically the laughing stock of the NHL. Sure, Crosby goes there and they still suck, that would be the only story you could get out of that.

At least in Pittsburgh he'd be playing with one of the top 2 or 3 players of all time. The fact that he is playing alongside Mario Lemieux is a bigger story than anything they could come up with in NY or LA.

If everything goes according to plan the Newark arena will be finished on time for the start of the 2007-2008 season. That means two more years at the CAA. Most NJ fans I know can't stand the Meadowlands, it's a long drive to the middle of nowhere, it's pushing 30 years old, the view from the cheaper seats stinks, and like you said, except for the occasional ESPN broadcast the TV quality is not very good.

I agree 100%, the Rangers don't deserve Crosby and all of these pundits who seem to think the NHL needs the NYR to save them are full of it. The Rangers have probably done as much if not more damage to the sport since 1995 than anyone. From the jackpot contracts they gave to marginal players and over-the-hill veterans ($9M a year for Bobby Holik?) which triggered massive salary inflation to the way they raped the small and mid-market teams of their talent (the Kovalev trade, the Jagar trade, etc.). That organization has never been a model NHL franchise things are going to get worse there before they get better. Crosby would probably be a free agent by the time they're ready to contend.

I've reversed my decision on Mark Messier. I'll be glad to have him on my team.. as I think I'll be able to make use of this picture at some point in the future:

garymark.jpg

I wonder how much Mess would be signing for. He's not worth a lot...but is he willing to take a cut? I'd offer him $300,000 and a bonus of $1 million for every goal he scores.

I haven't seen that image in like 10 pages. That's so hilarious! That was taken at our annual retreat north of the city two weeks ago. How did you get your hands on that smoking gun?

News:
-Mondano considering going to Phoenix to join Hull
-Phoenix buys out Brian Savage's contract
-Red Wings place Derian Hatcher, Darren McCarty and Ray Whitney on waivers
-Sens, Ducks, Hurricanes, Panthers pursuing Gary Roberts

Can't wait for the big news/deals to hit...

PS: Messier had 43 points during the 2003-04 season.
Respect the Moose!

lol, Brian Savage. If only you could sign guys for 2 month contracts he'd be a great Oct/Nov pickup.

Does anyone have an email address or regular mail address for the Edmonton Oilers? Let's say I really, really want Messier in Edmonton and feel the need to encourage them to not only pursue Father Time but pencil him in as the #2 center - where would I send the postcard?
"Dear Edmonton Oiler summer intern: I am a wealthy local businessman and a huge Mark Messier fan. If you sign Messier and give him 20-25 minutes of *quality* ice-time a game I will buy 5 minipacks and maybe a skybox. Please pass along this postcard to Kevin Lowe asap. Sincerely, Bill "dem" Smith"

Yeah, I'm hoping the crazy trades and buyouts start soon. I can only entertain myself by reading Owen Nolan grievence stories for so long.

Very smart move. If another team picks any of them up, the Red Wings are off the hook and if they do clear waivers then they'll be bought out.

Ah, now that's news! (no offense to dem's Gavin Morgan blockbuster ;p )

Also, Avs are reporting that they are definitely keeping Blake and Sakic.... that faint sound you hear is Adam Foote yelling "shit!" from Denver. Let's watch the Peter Forsberg rumour mill hit 15000rpm in the next day... I still think he'll end up in Colorado but maybe they won't have room for them all. Who'd make an offer for him? Is he a UFA? I say the Rangers use some of their surprising cap room to make an offer to him.

Foppa would take exactly 2 weeks of Jagr's lackadaisical play before quietly strangling him with his own laces in the Rangers' dressing room post-practice, before a horrified Dan Blackburn.

seems like Forsberg is going to leafs. YEEES :D

Hatcher free and the Habs announce they arent picking the option on Brisebois. Gainey was GM in Dallas while Hatcher played there, hmm ;)

:lol @ sportsnet's photoshop job:

dollarstore.jpg

"OPEN FOR BUSINESS: John LeClair and Derian Hatcher are now on sale at the Million Dollar Store."

Gainey just said here that he wants to look at the UFA market for a D.

HATCHER TO MONTREAL HATCHER TO MONTREAL

PLZ PLZ PLZ

;)

Damn it the Wings need to buy out Shanahan's worthless old ass also. I guess they figure he'll be able to get 60-70 pts if he plays with Lang all year but whatever. I hope Babcock can actually get him to go into the corners and fight for the puck instead of trying to impersonate Hull all game like he has for the past 3 years.

Atleast they're going to buy out Whitney. I don't how in the hell he got 70 pts in Columbus, no matter who he played with he always managed to fuck things up, he sucks.

If by "leafs" you mean "be leaving" and "YEEES" you mean "the AVS" I somewhat agree!

I know. He will probably stay in Avs. That sucks :/

I want him to play with Mats!

Just watching TSN, Gonchar is interested in playing for Toronto. Just what we need more offense on the defence! :(

"The message we are sending today is that we will look at available players in a market that is more open now," said Bob Gainey, general manager of the Canadiens.

"We have two or three positions to fill," he said. "We are looking for a defenceman and a forward. It all depends on the available players and, obviously, the market price."

Haven't been excited in an off season like that for more than a decade. So many players moving and finally we have a GM here in Montreal that is willing to acquire big players.

Here's to the season guys!
