that faint sound you hear is Adam Foote yelling "shit!" from Denver.
It sucks, be he's pretty much gone. He's been way underpaid for a while and was about to get a big raise. But now a stay at home grinder like Foote can't be kept for 4.5 in "the new NHL ", where the scores will be 11-7.

The very thought of scores that high makes me cringe.

The Sabres will be taking offers for "The Devil" Miroslav Satan.

http://www.buffalonews.com/editorial/20050726/2018810.asp

The Buffalo News has learned Satan's tenure in Buffalo - sometimes prolific, sometimes tumultuous - will end either with a discharge or a trade, maybe within a few days.

The Sabres' leading scorer in six of his seven full seasons here is a restricted free agent who would make nearly $4 million this season, about 14 percent of the team's target payroll, and become an unrestricted free agent next summer.

The Sabres will either decline to tender a qualifying offer or retain his rights for the purposes of trading them away for as little as a draft pick.

I think there's more to it than just Satan's contract. It's well known that he and Lindy Ruff don't see eye to eye. Miro whined and moaned all season, and basically quit on the team when they were making a late run towards the playoffs. The guy has fantastic hands, and scores goals in spurts. If he can find consistency in his game he'd be deadly.

If I was a GM of a team that could take a few steps up the standings this year I'd be all over Satan. I agree that like a lot of pure goal scorers he's a bit too streaky but he scores some of the nicest goals around. I'd have him, Afinogenov, St. Louis and Datsyuk in my top 5 list of guys who score the prettiest goals.

I think Satan would be best as the #1 winger on a team that already has a superstar type player. I think Miro could flourish even more on a team where he's the main offensive weapon but not the sole focus of attention... of course you could say that about just about anybody but still.

To expand on what dem said about the Blues:
Report: Blues won't use buyout option

TSN.ca Staff

7/26/2005 10:45:28 AM

The St. Louis Blues will not use the new buyout rule to address its difficult salary cap position, according to a report in the St. Louis Post Dispatch.

Team have until Friday to buy out big cantracts at two-thirds of their value. It is a temporary rule designed to help teams get under the new salary cap.

The top targets for the Blues appeared to be Doug Weight and Keith Tkachuk. Weight will make $5.7 million this season, while Tkachuk will pull in $7.8 million.

On Monday, however, Blues president Mark Sauer said the buyout plan was just a money-burner.

"That's just cash thrown into the river as far as I'm concerned," Sauer told the Post Dispatch. "Let's not sugarcoat this, this isn't a fantasy sports league here. That's real money being paid. Some teams are being forced to do that. Thank goodness we don't have to do that." :lol

Weight, who last week admitted to being a possible buyout casualty, could not be reached Monday. His agent, , said: "I'm happy with this decision," said Weight's agent, Steve Bartlett. "Doug is an asset who the Blues should have kept. I don't think there's any question he'll be happy about this."

Despite keeping at least two high-proced players, the Blues say they won't be big spenders.

"We're not trying to figure out, nor should we, how to spend to the max," Sauer said. "We're trying to figure out, 'How do we stay flexible? How do we get this team more stable financially? How do we prepare for a very complex set of circumstances?"

That could be bad news for restricted free agent defenceman Chris Pronger.

The Blues have until Sunday to sign Pronger or give him a qualifying offer, which would allow the Blues to match another club's offer or receive compensation if Pronger signs elsewhere. Sauer said the Blues remain uncertain how to proceed with the star defenceman.

"I think it's maybe a better spending of major dollars if you're spending them on 27-year-old unrestricted free agents rather than 31-year-old unrestricted free agents," Sauer told the Post Dispatch. "I'm not knocking Chris ... but remember, once you burn some of that salary cap room, you're done.

"The bottom line now is flexibility as far as the St. Louis Blues are concerned, and we're going to be very careful about that."

"It's frustrating that they have had 15 months to put a game plan together," Pronger told the Post Dispatch. "They had an idea of what (the CBA) was going to look like. It's very frustrating not knowing where you're going to be. That's the thing ... it's not that they're giving you good news or bad news. They're not giving you anything."

Pronger is such a whiner, what hasn't he complained about in the last year? :lol Like almost everyone here, I don't like the Blues much at all and can't wait to see them with 6 high priced guys making 90% of the cap and the rest of the team being AHL callups earning minimum wage.

Haha, Tkachuk will be 7.8 this year. Wonder where Pronger is going to end up, despite the injury troubles 2 seasons ago the last season he looked just fine. Who needs a franchise defenseman and can pay close to the single player cap for one?

Dealing Satan was one of the stupidest things Slats ever did. I dont know what the fuck he was thinking. It was obvious that the guy was busting out. Fucking Sather.

What was the deal again; Barrie Moore and Craig Millar for Miroslav Satan? Man Muckler really hosed Sather on that one. Satan was our leading scorer for 7 seasons I believe.

You guys can have Satan back, but we want Jason Smith and Rob Schremp in return. :)

Detroit announced this morning they're letting go of McCarty, Hatcher and Whitney. Fans across detroit are more pissed about losing McCarty than they are about losing Hatcher and Whitney combined. It fucking sucks, imho, and you can take that to the bank!

I guess they're trying to get Khabibulin? WAY TO GO WINGS!!! Overpay for another big name goalie.

AND THIS IS TOTALLY NOT LIKE MIKE BABCOCK, TO GET A GOOD GOALIE AND RIDE HIM FOR AS LONG AS YOU CAN.

That's what everyone I've talked to has been saying.

I haven't heard/read anything yet...but is Steve coming back?

I can't wait for the real free agency to begi
Yzerman and Ken Holland are meeting wednesday, I believe, and that's when Yzerman is going to tell Holland whether he's gonna retire, restructure his deal, etc. Should be an interesting next few weeks up here in Detroit. Illitch has gotta hate the rest of the owners for being so fuckin' retarded about salary caps. bah.

We're all also waiting to hear whether Chelios is going to retire or not. The guys 42 or 43 now, and he might be another guy that the Wings would rather just have retire than have to resign him, as it would take away from money they could use on younger talent.

Ducks will shop the #2 pick
Brian Burke:
"We will shop this pick. We have a lot of kids ready to step in for us -- Corey Perry, Ryan Getzlaf, Joffrey Lupul and Ladislav Smid -- and if we can trade the (No. 2) pick outright for an established player who is a good fit for us, we will do it. And if we get offers to move down a few spots and we can get another (draft) pick, we can do that too. It's really wide open. We want to see what's out there."

I wonder if Clarke will offer up something to try and get Bobby Ryan.

I hope Montreal goes for Anze Kopitar, we need a big centerman in here.

He has impressed lots of people here.

I'd be interested in those guys during URA season:

Niedermayer,
Forsberg,
Rafalski,
Roberts,
Foote,
Naslund(but he'll never go to montreal, no way in hell).
Kariya

Maybe's:
Modano,
Selanne

I remember hearing all this crap before the lockout that Chicago was going to make a run at him. They certainly have the cap room and need for a #1 defenseman, but somehow I feel they will be more content spending as little as possible like they always do.

Will be interesting to see. Believe it or not Wirtz has been telling the papers he will spend to the cap, but I guess it's possible he might not spend it on player salaries...

He'll spend it on a new pair of slippers before he puts money into the Hawks' lineup. What a joke. As for Pronger, he's been a whiny bitch for ages, but I'd still keep him over Keith Tkachuk at the max. An aging power forward over one of the better (when he's not injured) defencemen to come along in several years? What on earth the so-called St Louis braintrust is thinking, I have no idea.

"It's frustrating that they have had 15 months to put a game plan together," Pronger told the Post Dispatch. "They had an idea of what (the CBA) was going to look like. SHUT UP CHRIS. Someone else will give you your goddamn money. :D

I was gonna mention that about McCarty. I can understand Hatcher and Whitney, and while I like both players, Hatcher did play well when he did, and Whitney seems like a guy who needs to be on a small market team (heheh, perhaps a phrase of the past?) and be an anchor on the 2nd line or something.

I thought McCarty played well, he can play gritty, and he's been there for a while. There are so many McCarty jerseys out there...bah...I don't want to talk about it anymore. It was obvious last season, but it bears mentioning again, this team is going to look very different this year.

And I have to say that I've always been excited for new seasons to start, but this year it's different. Most teams will feature new faces that have proven themselves on other teams. Secondly, smaller market teams will be far more competitive. Thirdly, the new rules should help the game (because all diehards have to admit, the game has been suffering the last few years, almost painful to watch sometimes).

is there any talk going on about getting rid of a few teams still? There are a LOT of teams that don't need to exist anymore. I'd much rather see them get rid of 8-10 teams and raise the salary cap to ~$50 million...

Columbus needs to go.

whytemyke said:

Are you kidding me? Columbus is doing fine. Shit, rare is the game that I go to where it isn't close to a sell-out crowd. Columbus can stay; the Coyotes, Sharks, the 'Canes, and the Panthers all need to get the fuck out!

Oh yeah, the Flyers too, but that's only because I hate them so.....Roenick is a piece of shit.

I really doubt he's saying that Minny is an expansion team that needs to be contracted. :P If you think Columbus is a good NHL city (and I agree) then you must know that Minnesota is just as solid and successful.

I for one don't care to hear ppl talk about contracting teams so casually because they know
*their* original six club will be around anyway. It's easy to say 'get rid of 8 teams' when you're lucky enough to live in a large city and cheer for a team that won't have to worry about it.

I have no problem with 30 teams and don't see any reason to contract any as long as there's enough markets to sustain that many.

There are a LOT of teams that don't need to exist anymore. I'd much rather see them get rid of 8-10 teams and raise the salary cap to ~$50 million...
Spoken like a Wings fan.

Spoken like a Wings fan.
If that were true I would have put the Salary Cap at $100 million and said that we need a luxury tax.

It's about the hockey talent pool being diluted. Who wants an 82 game schedule where 3/4ths will be played against other teams in your own division who will most likely still suck? Does anyone here think ratings are going to go up for a Chicago/Detroit game? And if you do, do you think those ratings will continue to climb when one team has 20-25 more wins than the other?

Messier on the powerplay, that brings it back to even strength. Then again you don't want him on the ice any other time because the play may go into his end and he hasn't found that in years.

:lol Think you're being a tad optimistic (or pesamistic) there. Frankly I'll be surprised if we see more then a goal a game increase across the board. What we'll hopefully see is more goal scoring chances and faster, smoother flow, which is all I need.

And this was back when Sather was still considered a hockey genius. :lol

Expect the Pronger/Maple Leafs rumours to get cranking soon, if they haven't already. Of course how they'd be able to afford him is beyond me, but that's never stopped the Toronto rumour mill before.

And I'm all for blowing out a third of the league's franchises. Hell, make it a 16 team league...wouldn't bother me at all.

So Forsberg and Naslund both want to play for the same team?

They might as well just play with Sundin :p
I'm going to make some sort of collage of your recent posts when everything is done with and staple it to your forehead.

:lol Now the big talk is that Tie Domi could join the Pens since he's good friends with Mario and they were paired up in a golf tourney today. Look, I like Tie and all, but if that's the biggest story of the day in this town, things are sadder then I thought.

Laugh? No. You report them here, because you think they have validity! I mean, that's the second time you've mentioned Sundin, Naslund, Forsberg playing for Toronto! Naslund and Forsberg have a far better chance of landing in Vancouver and you haven't heard a Canuck fan here mention that ONCE.

Anyway, continue updating us. Just don't pretend that you don't fall for this shit every time. ;)

Right, because no other fan in this thread has thrown bullshit against the wall. :lol BJ's no less serious or more delusional then anyone else.

Since he's a Leafs fan and he posts the rumors he's an ideal target. I don't know why people hate it so much....I wouldn't mind it if (assuming there were such fans) a Sens fan posted stupid rumors....there's nothing else to talk about right now anyway.

You know what we need? So that the Canucks and Leaf fans stop bickering (I like the canucks dammit), Sens fans. Sens fans and more aggressive Avalanche fans...just so the two most vocal teams (on GA) the Leafs and Canucks, have real enemies! Bring me some Senators blood and I'll fetch you guys some avalanche bait.

:lol I like the Canucks as in I wouldn't mind them meeting us in the finals ;) But I'd never really cheer for them, and I'd only care about them progressing if the Leafs are long gone. Then again, I'd cheer for any canadian team (excluding the sens) in that situation.

I have to say that the last couple of years, there has been some entertaining-to-watch hockey -- in particular when "crackdown" meant something (i.e: first 30 games of the season, tops).

Last year's playoffs were also entertaining, but probably more for the fact that the games were dramatic. I still and will always hate playoff refereeing. Letting the action go starts off well, but it always ends up in blatant and disgusting rule-breaking in the latter stages of tight games.

Beyond that, I think the game has been tough to watch for a surprisingly long time. It took me a while to stop watching hockey, but up until parts of early last year and then the playoffs, I hadn't really watched in four or five years (except for one game live) and it probably should have been longer.
