so basically every sing team is getting better except for the leafs? and maybe canucks.

No, its more like the really high payroll teams are losing players to teams who would have never had a chance to sign them in the past, which creates a level playing field. The perfect example is the Pronger deal, St. Louis would NEVER have made that deal if not for the salary cap, taking a once perennial playoff team (not sure how long their streak is, but its long) down a few notches, while Edmonton (a team what hasn't made the playoffs much recently) gets better (for this season anyways). You won't believe how much I enjoy seeing the Detroit's and Colorado's of the league losing players to teams like Columbus and Calgary :)

I can't believe Kovalev is going to the Habs...

I just read this like a day ago in the Philly Inquirer:

"Pittsburgh has all but locked up Alexei Kovalev and was involved in discussions with Peter Forsberg and Niedermayer"

I guess I'd take Forsberg over Kovey...

Man.. Bruins really got boned on that Gonchar deal.

Shaonne Morrison, 2004 1st rounder, and a 2nd rounder for 15 games of Gonchar.
OUCH

Wouldn`t playing in Russia be tempting for many players instead of NHL? I think they can make almost as much money there as in NHL now with this salary cap. Propably less games to play during the season also.

Playing for the russian mob and sleeping with the fishies after a bad game isn't a great career choice.

I would think playing in Russia is now a viable option for players, money wise, but from what I understand the way of life in north america is much perfered. I mean some Russian players I could see staying there, it's their country and I'm sure they love it, but it's not like any Canadians will be flocking there any time soon just to make an extra few bucks.

RDS.ca says Montreal's offer is the best Satan has received.

Could be on the way to montreal.

DAMN, when they mean buisness!

Maybe Gainey's holdin off the Kovalev announcement to offer both Satan and Kovalev signings to the press?

anyway, we'll know later on.

Told you you were signing Naslund, Socreges :D

Money is talking so far........I hope JFG's master plan pays off.
Sounds like Naslund stayed in Vancouver for Vancouver. I'm sure he got other offers of 6+ mill a year.

Well that comment was mainly about guys like Gonchar, not signing at some made-up discounted rate the leaf fans wanted to believe.. Whatever, I know that my team has very little room to move around in and if we have to wait a while to sign the best guys we can get at a discounted rate then so be it. I'm glad Naslund is still there.

Nonis basically just said they wouldn't be signing any other big name players. They just don't have the cap room to do so.

No Nieds for YOU!

The fan is reporting that we're going to sign Allison soon for the league minimum :lol with bonuses that can get him around 2 million. If Jr. pulls this off I'll be very happy.

This upcoming Leaf season is shaping up to be the most interesting since 1984/1985. I remember those lean years well.

Fuckin shit. :(

Hmm... The Gonchar signing is very interesting for the Pens. Most likely to help lure Malkin over here from Russia since they were teammates. I can honestly say that I am really looking forward to seeing the powerplay this year. I don't know if there will be a better powerplay in any of the hockey video games this year... LOL

This signing definetely means Lemieux sticks around for 2 or 3 more years. He can just play powerplay. He has always craved a d-man such as what gonchar is.

Gonchar was definetely not on the radar. I am very happy they signed him for 5 mill vs. Niedermyer (the devil I hated the most) for 7 mill. I am not sure how much money the pens have now left to spend. I would love to see them sign Forsberg, but not at the expense of making him a 2nd line center or making Crosby a 2nd line center. I don't think it is a reality.

Pissed that Kovy slipped away, but 4.5 mill is too much for him this day and age.

Satan would not be too bad, but not at 4 million either though. Maybe the will resign Morozov... who knows. I definetely think the Pens have more up their sleeves as they usually announce a press conference for big name free agents and they haven't issued any word yet.

I'm just glad we got thrown a bone in the free agency market.

The Fourth Period is reporting
Brent Sopel has been traded to the Isles
Mathieu Dandenault is signed in Montreal.

Brent Sopel traded??? ruh roh
Does this mean theyre... looking to sign someone?? =|

Dandenault: 4 years, $7 million ($1.75 million/season)
Seems like a pretty solid deal.

Funny that both the Red Wings and Nucks, both presumably in the hunt for Nieds, are unloading a defenceman.

G'bye Sopes! Your sickly mullet, streaky slapper from the point, and hilarious country-bumpkin attempts to score with chicks at the Skybar post-game will be sorely missed here in God's Country™.

Doesn't seem to be reported anywhere else yet, but if true...

Jesus on the move?! dammit

At least the iron chef is still on the team

As much as I don't care to continue all this "Leaf" talk, is there some reason why they're not working to unload some more salary?

1/3 of the salary is locked up in 2 very good players.

Mats Sundin and Ed Belfour.

Sundin is the franchise player and Belfour has been absolutely godly in net.

It would be a very tough sell in toronto.

wow

Chicago is going after the bhulin wall.

They are not owned by a multinational and therefore they dont want to pay players for nothing? Just a guess

For the most part I would agree with you. I do think that Belfour is getting old, and that the Leafs need to pick up another goalie soon. I can't see Eddie going past this year....

My ideal situation in goal would have been for us to trade or buy out Eddie (sorry Eddie, you were great against the Sens!) and sign Weekes...since that didn't happen we'll have to make do, but I would have preferred to swallow the difference in quality between the two goalies and use the extra money.

http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/dws/spt/stories/080405dnsponewmodano.3a2692bd.html

The agent for Mike Modano said Wednesday afternoon that Modano would not accept the Stars’ five-year, $17.75 million contract offer.

"It's just far too much of a hometown discount’’ said Brian Lawton, Modano’s Minnesota-based agent. "Mike knew there was going to be a difference between offers, but not as much as $9 million, and that’s what it could turn out to be.’’

When asked if a deal could still get done with the Stars, Lawton said, "It’s possible, but not likely.’’

Lawton said several teams have multiple-year offers on the table for Modano, and that the market took a huge swing upward Wednesday.

"Teams are giving term, five years is not out of the question at all,’’ Lawton said. "I mean, the market changed.’’

Stars owner Tom Hicks said Tuesday he believed the Stars already had an agreement with Modano.

"Well, I think Tom Hicks 'hoped’ he had a deal with Mike, but I know for sure Mike said he needed to talk to me first," Lawton said. "I think any report that there was ever a deal was inaccurate."

Lawton did not give a time frame on when Modano might sign a deal with another team.

Booo, no Kovalev. :( Ah well, Gonchar is still a pretty great pickup for the Pens, although I think they need a solid defensive defenseman, and not another offensive one to put back on the point. Tarnstrom and Jackman are already solid back there. Gonchar would be an interesting combo with Brooks Orpik.

We still need another forward or two. Maybe even a proven goalie. C'mon Craig!

From Eklund:

LEETCH signs with Boston
Modano rejects offer from Dallas (may be headed to Boston..or minnesota)
Satan to Montreal
Forsberg to Vancouver..trade Sopel to NYI to clear cap space
Pallfy could soon be an Islander again
Berard to Columbus (DONE and Confirmed)
Cujo to Pittsburgh
Burke to Pitt
Holy cow batman!

Damn if the Habs got Satan as well. Why don't you guys sign all the mid range talented wingers. Hopefully this means that Kariya or Foppa is coming to the Burgh as well. Maybe Ziggy is headed our way??? I still don't think the pens are done signing people. I think they have 2 more signings to go, including one Tie Domi...

The Cujo signing? Eh, I don't know how much he has in the tank, but if he is anything like Belfour or Hasek as far as age-less goalies... Then is is okay. I think the pens better dump Caron and let Marc-Andre Fleury play 40 game this year and let Cujo play 40 games. If they send Fleury to the minors, then they might as well flush him down the toilet as his confidence will be shattered. (They already screwed him from attaining bonus money in the millions his first year in the league. They better not do it again).

I just hope they didn't sign Cujo to a long term deal. A 2 year deal with an option for a 3rd would have been okay. I hope he didn't get a boatload of money either.

Pens look like a for sure playoff team now if they can sign an decent winger for the 2nd line....

CuJo is a great goalie. As long as he has a good team with good D in front of him then he'll play outstanding. Belfour/Brodeur are the kind of goalies that correct stupid D mistakes by making spectacular saves. For the last 7 years in toronto / detroit minus the last year he put up ~35 wins each season. He's a very good goalie regardless of what other people say.

The Avalanche are rivals of the Canucks, but the Canucks fans would still cream themselves if they got Forsberg, right? :D Man that'd be so insane. Damn this salary cap! I feel like a Yankee fan the year after the MLB finally gets a salary cap :( Go ahead and laugh at this injustice

So far the Leafs have lost 8 players and gained 1

Owen Nolan
Joe Newish dyke
Roberts
Renberg
Mogilny
Leetch
Francis
Reichel
Domi (?)

Kariya's still on the market? Damn. I wouldn't even mind Domi, despite my hate for him because of the team he's been affiliated with for the past century. Goooo 3rd line grinder! And Sim needs more ice time!

And uhh...that Burke BS better not be true. As in...Sean Burke? Whaaaa?

with domi seemingly on the way out it could be 10/1 soon.

Hopefully mogilny re-signs with the leafs. Francis, leetch is not a big deal. Reichel, mogilny, renberg , roberts and nolan are big big losses.

And you listed reichel twice. REICHEL LOVER!

My only consolation as a Sabres fan is that the Leafs aren't doing anything either.

Now just because I posted that, the next post will be a huge Leafs signing. :/

I don't mind that Satan is in Montreal. Now we get to hammer his floating ass into the ice 8 times a year. WATCH OUT FOR SATAN WHEN THERE'S AN EMPTY NET THO!!
