Don't mind me, doing some spelling corrections of my own. :p

Ok that was lame. Don't worry, you'll see even lamer remarks in the coming weeks.

Ever notice that the word "Canucks", rhymes with "Sucks"? I don't think it's a coincidence. God was implying something when he invented the English language.

You know, I just had a discussion about the whole Leafs/Leaves thing today.

Canucks. Sucks. Canuckssucks. Sucknucks? Cansucks? We'll work on it......

Hahah Calder, I think as the season goes on, it's gonna be me and you going at it. It's the Flames fans that bug me worse than the 'Nucks ones.

*countdown to October 15th....*
Do you like the Senators? Because if not, then calder is REALLY going to bug you.

edit: ever notice Leafs rhymes with Queefs and Flames doesn't even need to rhyme with anything because jesus christ they're called the Flames

"Let me be the first one to say it. The Leafs did an MRI on Eric Lindros's head today and they found nothing" -TheShadow (another insider on eklunds site)

Lindros has no brain : <

:lol :lol

Jason's MRI rumors proved to be true and that was the day before he signed I believe.....this should be good. Btw...feel free to laugh your ass off at us Leaf fans getting excited over MRI results. I think it's hilarious at least.

While I like the fact that Lindros will play for the Leafs; I still have apprehensions.Other than his health, I fear that the Leafs will continue to buy the talent at the expense of developing their farm system, and sooner or later the allure of playing for Toronto will wear off. Steen and Stajan can only do so much, and eventually Sundin will either be traded or retire.

Now... this is one thing that has been bothering me...

If the toronto maple leafs sign players up until just under the cap space... what happens if the arbritator rules that the maple leafs have to pay owen nolan for last years salary? wouldn't that have to be payed against the cap? what would the leafs have to do if a situation like that occurs?

Apparently the next 2 (last 2?) players in Leafs sights are Bondra and Carter. ALSO Belfour is no longer getting shopped, and Leclair might be looking to sign with the leafs to partner with lindros for league minimum (since his contract was bought out?)

this is the rumors on the street anyways
What street? What's your source on this?

C) Piss you off

Take your pick.
D) If it places the Leaves in a positive light, he's willing to believe it

Let us know when Lindros sneezes, putz.

It's Leafs.

And Lindros sneezing would get more media attention than the canucks winning the cup

Whatever, the Canucks just MAKING IT to the cup final saw the NHL at the peak of it's popularity. You know what happened the last time the Leafs made the final?

Of course you don't. You weren't born.

Canucks? Peak of popularity? It was the start of the NHLs downfall.

"Oh crap, if a team like the canucks can make the finals, the NHL is doomed!"

then the fans started running away in hordes

I have nothing against the 'nucks, but your cockiness is funny.

To be fair, no one does for sure. Historians often conflict on the matter.

Here, I found an artist's depiction of the Leafs' latest Stanley Cup run:

The Leafs already found a way around that.

1) They filed buyout papers before the deadline.
2) An injured player's contract doesn't count against the cap.

So if Nolan doesn't accept the buyout at 66% of his contract then the Leafs will not clear him to play after his surgery (did he ever have it?) and make him sit out the entire season (but he would be paid everything he's owed). :lol

The bigger problem for the Leafs is leaving space for the $3 million in bonuses that Allison can make this year since all bonuses count against the cap AFAIK.

Oh my god :lol :lol :lol

Toronto Maple Leafs
The Leafs are obviously a bit bloated and aging. If Jason Allison is healthy, the Leafs should have enough to make the playoffs. But this team needs to make a decision, and my decision would be to blow it up. Strip thyself of salary, get a high draft pick and go after unrestricted free agents in the next summer or two. This team is like Journey or some other band that continues to tour with the name and keeps plugging in new people when others in the band die, go bald or become David Lee Roth. They need a whole new identity.

:lol :lol :lol

I like how you're boasting that the Canucks losing is better than the Leafs winning. I won't bother bringing up the Leafs last winning the cup, because it's been long enough where bragging about that is almost as sad. You can't really brag about your team if it's been decades since your last Stanley Cup win, not just your appearences.

Also, that picture was hilarious! :lol :lol

Can we get some Blues fans in here please? I need to direct my vitriol somewhere else for a change, and October is still two months away.

I'm surprised you're not going after the Wings, they are an easy target now. The Blues will be an easy target as well, I don't think they did well at all last year compared to previous years. Going off of memory anyways.

I'm considering it - but honestly I've gotten used to not having cable in the house. Hockey is the lone thing on television that would make me reconsider.

Shaw doesn't have Center Ice, I emailed them and the NHL about it but no response so far. How much does it cost anyway? I even tried looking up prices elsewhere but I couldn't find that on Rogers site or anywhere else in canada that has it. If nothing else I'll be getting the NHL Network again.

There's no NHL channel here in Ohio, at least not on my cable provider. If I remember correctly, Center Ice was something along the lines of $150, and worth every penny. I loved coming home to find 5 different hockey games on, and then 3 more 2 hours later.

Hmm, for around $150 (probably a bit more in canada) that's pretty tempting. But I already subscribe to the extra Sportsnet channels and they all show regional games, to go along with the CBC and TSN's national games... with 2003 as my guide I was getting around 10 games a week on TV anyway. If I'm lucky some of the US superstations I get will have local NHL deals too, they show enough baseball on those channels. I'm sure WGN can find some unspeakably fucking annoying homer of a announcer to call some Blackhawk games. Not local games, natch. :lol

Luckily this year Snet West will know which Alberta team to televise more often so I won't get stuck seeing a dozen Oiler games in march/april after they've already been eliminated. :D

Being a Pens fan in New Mexico makes Center Ice a god send. I would still consider getting it, even if it was double in price.

I got to see about 79 of the 82 pens games last year. One Chicago feed hosed us, so did a Nashville on, and I couldn't get the Phoenix one because it was blacked out in my area.
I was pissed on the Phoenix one, as that was the game they broke out of a 21 game winless streak (I think Jackman came to the team by trade that game)

If I learned anything from watching Center Ice last year, it was that I had to turn up my brightness when watching the Blackhawks, Oilers, and Rangers because their arenas were so poorly lit.

After poking around on Bell ExpressVu, here's what I found:
There are four categories of NHL games:

1. National games - Hockey Night In Canada (HNIC) on CBC and some SportsNet games
2. Regional games - broadcast on SportsNet and TSN
3. Local games - broadcast on local stations such as CHRO and CKVR
4. Out of market games - broadcast on Vu! - NHL Centre Ice

1) National games:

The CBC HNIC games are available to all Bell ExpressVu subscribers and the SportNet national games, "SportsNet game of the week", are available to everyone who subscribes to "Sports". National games are not broadcast within the Centre Ice package.

2) Regional games:

SportNet and TSN have the rights to broadcast NHL games on a regional basis.

1. East Region: Maritimes, Quebec and the eastern part of Ontario including Ottawa
2. Ontario Region: All of Ontario except the eastern portion included in (a)
3. West Region: Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, North West Territories and Nunavut
4. Pacific Region: British Columbia and the Yukon

Bell ExpressVu has a slightly different broadcast policy than cable. We offer all TSN and SportNet channels to all our subscribers including "in region" and "out-of-region" channels whereas cable usually offers only the "in region channel" of each network. Bell ExpressVu subscribers benefit from watching all channels, except when a game is blacked out on one of the channels due to limited regional rights.

3) Local Games:

The individual NHL teams have sold "local Rights" to several Canadian "local" television stations carried by Bell ExpressVu:

Ottawa Senators: CHRO, Channel 207 Toronto Maple Leafs: CKVR & CFPL, Channel 216 & 219

These stations are included in Bell ExpressVu's "Locals" program package. However, the NHL blackout rules only allow games on these channels to be viewed in the region where the originating station is geographically located. At Bell ExpressVu we follow these rules and will black out the local station in other regions during NHL games.

4) NHL Centre Ice

This special package of NHL hockey is specifically for "out-of-market" games. However, this package does not include "home team games". Therefore, there are still NHL blackouts in the "regions" allocated to each team. These blackouts apply regardless of whether the game is played in the team's home city or at their opponent's arena. Many home team games are available in the home team region, when they are broadcast by either a local station or are regional games on TSN/SNET.

Note: French language broadcasts of NHL games on RDS, SRC and TQS are not subject to blackouts and are available across the country.
The Sports Fan combo is freaking ridiculous. The only mention of Center Ice on that site is for commercial installations, however. I'll keep poking around, they must offer residential as well.

Thornton signs deal with Bruins

8/11/2005 4:06:11 PM

BOSTON (CP) - Joe Thornton committed his future to the Boston Bruins on Thursday, agreeing to a $20-million US, three-year deal and forgoing unrestricted free agency next summer.

A source said the 26-year-old Bruins captain will earn $6.666 million a season, close to the $7 million a year Calgary Flames star Jarome Iginla signed for last week.

"Joe's signing was a priority and we are again making clear how much he means to this franchise," Bruins GM Mike O'Connell said in a statement. "He is among the upper echelon of players in our league and he just continues to get better."

The Bruins had hoped to sign him to a longer deal, on Tuesday offering a $32.5-million, five-year deal - an average of $6.5 million per season. That was up from the $25-million, five-year deal offered last month.

The three-year deal will allow Thornton to become an unrestricted free agent when he's 29.

Both sides were under pressure to get a deal done. Monday is the deadline to accept qualifying offers before they expire. If Thornton had accepted his one-year, $5.13-million qualifier, the new collective bargaining agreement stipulates that the Bruins and Thornton could not have talked about an extension until Jan. 1.

Teammate Sergei Samsonov accepted his one-year, $2.77-million qualifying offer Wednesday, bringing the Russian one step closer to unrestricted free agency next summer. That is unless he can sign a long-term deal with the Bruins after Jan. 1.

Samsonov's decision likely put even more pressure on the Bruins to try and get Thornton under contract, not wanting to lose both star forwards next summer.

Thornton, a six-foot-four, 225-pound native of St. Thomas, Ont., has scored 20-plus goals in each of his last five NHL seasons.

He led the club in scoring three times, including each of the last two NHL seasons and in 2002-03 he finished third overall in the NHL's scoring race with a career-high 101 points.

He led the Bruins in scoring in 2003-04 with 23 goals and 50 assists in 77 games.

Named Boston captain on Oct. 8, 2002, Thornton comes into this season with 160 goals, 261 assists and 611 penalty minutes in 509 career NHL games.
Huh. Kinda surprised that Thornton reuped.

Leafs land Lindros

8/11/2005 4:29:11 PM

TORONTO (CP) - The Toronto Maple Leafs acquired Eric Lindros on Thursday, signing the unrestricted free agent to a one-year contract.

Lindros and the Leafs have been linked for years. But their on-again, off-again courtship was not consummated until Thursday.

The 32-year-old forward played for the New York Rangers most recently. He had 10 goals, 22 assists and 60 penalty minutes in 39 games during the 2003-04 season.

Lindros won the Hart Trophy as the league's most valuable player in 1994-95 and the Lester B. Pearson Award as the most outstanding player in the NHL as voted by the players the same year.

But concussions have taken a toll on the big forward during his NHL career.

Lindros has played 678 career NHL games for Philadelphia and the New York Rangers, recording 356 goals 461 assists and 1,285 penalty minutes.
I've always liked Lindros, but at this stage he's more of a gamble than one-gap unsuited connectors.

EDIT: :lol oops, messed up my cutting and pasting, I had intended to paste both stories.

What's with the "Leafs Sign Lindros" headline just shoehorned in there? :lol

And considering the new limits of the CBA, I doubt Thornton would wait a year for UFA just to get a slightly better deal with...I dunno, Columbus? Tampa Bay? Might as well stay in Beantown and collect the Devil's money.

WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOo

It's finally over!

1.55 mill for a player that can be a PPG guy. Awesome awesome. I can't wait to see if he brings his game up to another level playing for the team he's always dreamed of playing for.

Press conference at 6 pm

I'm real pleased with this deal.

where are you getting that? doom and gloom that is? real gm? ;)

The only doom and gloom by me was about Anson Carter coming here and us signing Domi/Belak, but I got over that quickly. Personally I've been waiting years for Lindros to come here, and Leaf fans have every reason to be excited.

With Lindros you're getting a player who will likely be awesome for 15 games, decent for 25, lost for 20, and absent for the rest. Take it from someone who watched him game ina nd game out the last three years, the guy is so hypersensitive to injuries it's unreal. First season with the Rangers he got into a completely harmless mid-ice bump/collision with a San Jose Shark, played the rest of the game, then missed the next 30+ with a concussion sustained from that bump. This could work out well for the Leafs, and it could also backfire tremendously when your team is fighting for playoff position and Lindros is in the press box. And he will be at some point, guaranteed.

Lets look at a few of the Leafs.

1) Ed Belfour
2) Eric Lindros
3) Jason Allison
4) Jeff O'Neill

When I look at the compacted schedule and the number of 3 games in 4 nights I'm really not looking forward to when these guys start dropping like flies because of injuries. It'll especially suck when Tellqvist has to start 30+ games this season because of Belfour's bad back. :(

I loved watching Lindros play in the Philly days, I hope he can have a healthy season.

I just wonder if he is going to have ridiculous expectations on him playing in Toronto. He isn't the Lindy of old and never will be, but I think he'll be a good 1.55 million dollar player if he stays healthy.
