Senators secure Spezza with one-year deal

OTTAWA (Ticker) - After nearly two weeks of relative inactivity, the Ottawa Senators got down to business.
The Senators on Friday re-signed five players, including former first-round pick Jason Spezza, to one-year contracts and defenseman Anton Volchenkov to a two-year deal.
Center Antoine Vermette, right wing Chris Neil and defenseman Christoph Schubert also inked one-year pacts.
Financial terms were not disclosed.
Drafted second overall in 2001 with the pick the Senators received from the New York Islanders for center Alexei Yashin, Spezza recorded seven goals and 14 assists in 33 games as a rookie in 2002-03. The 22-year-old broke through the following season, collecting 22 tallies and 33 assists in 78 contests.
Last season, Spezza played with Binghamton of the American Hockey League, earning MVP honors after leading the league in scoring with 117 points.
Volchenkov, 23, was limited to 19 games in 2003-04 due to a shoulder injury, registering one goal and two assists. Selected 21st overall in the 2000 draft, the Russian had 10 tallies and 35 assists in 69 games with Binghamton last season.
Vermette, a second-round pick in 2000, made his NHL debut in 2003-04, collecting seven goals and seven assists in 57 games. The 23-year-old recorded 28 goals and 73 points in 78 contests with Binghamton in 2004-05.
The Senators' enforcer the past three seasons, Neil had eight goals, eight assists and 194 penalty minutes in 82 games in 2003-04. A sixth-round pick in 1998, the 26-year-old tough guy has 24 tallies, 19 assists and 572 penalty minutes in 222 career contests.
Schubert, 23, was a fourth-round pick of the Senators in 2001. The German native collected 10 goals and 22 assists in 76 games with Binghamton last season.
