It seems that Tampa has signed Lecavalier to a long term deal. So much for Vinny in Montreal next season.

Yeah this blows.
And Koivu only signed for one year here. Gainey must have something else up his sleeves, at least I hope so.

I was actually at that game :D
Last game of the playoffs for the Habs when the Lightning eliminated us. We gave them a good 5-10 minutes standing ovation at the end of the match for the great season they gave us and all the habs players came on the ice to give us a goodbye and to thank us :)

Drensch is bitching about nothing because frankly, that's all he has left. Leave him (and the Laffalanche) be. :lol

ALL RIGHT - I attended the Olympic practice at GM Place last night, the Juniors were scheduled to play afterwards but my little guy had to go to bed so no junior hockey scrimmage for me. :( That said, it was awesome to see the NHLers back on the ice where they belonged. GM Place was about 80% capacity...for a practice! Not bad at all. My sister took a bunch of pictures and some video, which I'm putting up here so you guys can check it out for yourselves. A few notes:

- Bertuzzi got a standing ovation the second he came out of the tunnel. Everything he did, we were roaring. Touched the puck? WHOOAAAA Took a shot? WHOOOAAA Accidentally knocked over Shane Doan (Doan wasn't looking where he was going, ran into Bert and bounced off him like a basketball)? WHOOOAAAA His hands weren't quite there yet, but his speed was just fine.
- Martin St Louis is a freaking sonic blur in person. During the shootout drill where you get to keep shooting as long as you score each time, he made Luongo look absolutely silly 3 times in a row. Quick hands, and even quicker feet. Good God.
- Pronger didn't give a shit that it was a practice, he manhandled a few guys against the boards during the breakout drills. All in good fun.
- Whoever the jackass was who thought it would be a good idea to interview players DURING THE DRILLS needs to be fired. People are cheering, they don't want to listen to Shane Foxman ask Brendan Morrison about "how good it feels to be back" while Mo's trying to catch his breath. Yeesh.
- Yzerman may have one bad wheel, but he's still an awesome sniper. He scored from an impossible angle over Turco's shoulder, from the far corner at the goal line. Nobody had any business making that shot and Stevie Y buried it. He got a huge ovation as well.
- Peca, Thornton, Lecavalier all looked tired/disinterested. Hitchcock barked at Lecavalier once that I could see.
- This city (and NHL fans everywhere, I guess) are absolutely starved for hockey again. The anticipation was palpable. Watching a simple practice, no stupid rock music intermissions, nobody shooting T-shirts into the crowd, no goddamned Orca flying about...just the best in the world, practising together for the first time in ages. It was an outstanding experience and I'm glad I got to go. Thanks sis!

Now for the pics...

HOCKEY IS BACK!

Wow, what a good turnout for that practice.

The one here in Calgary for preperation for the World Championships had a little turnout.

It was good though, I got to meet a whole bunch of the players after.

Even this bum :D :

Theodore looked fine, but Luongo was stellar (with the exception of the St Louis shootout :D). If he remains consistent, there's no reason why he can't carry the torch for Canada in goal for the next several years.

And Brodeur?

Mike: Meh, I'll take Bishop's words :P
Not hard to be the worst of these 3 though, Brodeur and Luongo are indeed better than Theodore anyways.

In the Toronto Star about Steve Thomas:

Some hockey insiders expressed skepticism about it happening — "Did you say he's talking to the Leafs or the Leafs' alumni team?" wondered one NHL executive last night

:lol :lol :lol

I wouldn't say Theodore looked terrible - I was concentrating on Luongo's play more than the others, but nothing Jose did stood out as particularly Tommy Salo-like.

Thats cool Bish..... I used to know another arrogant Avs fan, and I even liked the Avs back in the day as my 2nd team, but his arrogance made me grow a hatred for them.

That is badass that you got to see the Canadian team... Too bad Lemieux wasn't there. I have a feeling he is spending this week getting Crosby settled into Pittsburgh, as part of his "commitments to the Penguins"

NHL sources have told TSN it's a four-year deal at $6.8 million US a year.

Wow. Prince Vince may be my favourite player in hockey... but he aint worth that money. Hell, I would hesitate to give him 5. All the talent in the world.. but he still hasnt come through with a DOMINATING season.

It is so funny to see fans of teams that actually could sign free agents the past 8 years bitch and complain about the penguins.

My team signed exactly 2 big FA in their existence, for a total of 8 mill. Complain to those who ruined it. The pens were allowed to put a turd on the ice for a long time. Now teams that actually tried get penalized.

All you haters can bitch, but we all know what team you be using in your hockey video games... Just like in 92-94 with the Sega NHL 94 series.

Canadiens and Nordiques

Let's guess top 5 in scoring in no particular order!
Sakic
Naslund
Iginla
Sundin
Lecavalier

Forsberg-only in PPG

I don't see how teams can "abuse" the cap or drive salaries up with this system?
Since their is a max, you can only pay so much. So, based on salary and performance, I think guys like Thorton, Aucoin, Lapointe, gonchar-etc are all way overpaid. Compare the kind of money Hejduk and Thorton make. Compare Rick Nash and Forsberg. GMs couldn't control their spemnding without a cap. They can't do it now. The cap only places max amounts. Not some sort of fiscal responsibilty that many of these teams never had in the first place.

Hell, I would hesitate to give him 5. All the talent in the world.. but he still hasnt come through with a DOMINATING season.
And thus the cap proves it's worth yet again.

Drensch do you honestly think Thorton would be in boston right now if it werent for the cap?

Im sure some other big market team would have paid him more if it werent for the cap.

You're looking at it from a completely narrow viewpoint by saying "hey my avs only signed 2 big free agents ever!"

Look at the players you've had on your team:

Peter Forsberg
Patrick Roy
Joe Sakic
Rob Blake
Adam Foote
Paul Kariya
Milan Hejduk
Teemu Selanne
Ray Bourque

Before the cap was implemented, how many of those players did your team lose to free agency because they couldn't afford to match the offer they were getting from the big clubs? You think that just because Colorado didn't go out and buy huge names like New York or Detroit, they're suddenly innocent from the whole process. The Avalanche had one of the biggest payrolls in the entire league.

You ask someone like dem, who's watched practically every good player his team has had get signed away by a big team if the ability to be able to have Forsberg, Roy, Sakic, Blake, Foote, Hejduk, and Bourque all on your team at once thanks to a bloated payroll doesn't give them an unfair advantage.

You're just grumpy now that there is an even playing field. Boo hoo.

Anyone know if there are still profit sharing plans with the new CBA?

I think teams that are successful and do a great job of promoting the NHL (since the League itself does a HORRIBLE job) should reap what they sow. Now, considering that they can't sign more big name players because they are so successful, I think the whole profit sharing plan should be thrown out the window, or at least marginalized.

mogilny has signed with new jersey

TSN and eklund (though he says mixed reports) saying cujo will probably sign in phoenix

edmonton oilers holding a press conference tomorrow. Most likely mark messier... if no phoenix deal then possibly cujo

KLowe is in Vancouver.

They'll announce some season ticket drive or something.

Scott Howson (assistant GM of oilers) said on Team 1260 that there was going to be a press conference tomorrow.

So if anything it will probably be him hosting the conference

I just got onto this sports radio show here and bitched Lecavaler in front on thousands of Quebecers who have hardons when they hear his name.

Im sure some other big market team would have paid him more if it werent for the cap.
There are alot of dumb shits in the league. That's the problem, and the cap hasn't solved it.

Almost everyone on the avs was drafted by the avs. If not, we had to give up tons of people to get them:

Ricci
Ozolinsh
Drury
Reinprecht
Ballard
Yelle
Messier
Morris
Denis

Tons of other picks and players.

Colorado never paid anyone an outrageous salary. You could argue that Forsberg might have been overpaid due to injuries, but that's a tough argument. Colorado still has to pay big salaries. We get nothing for all the picks we dealt. Teams like Pittsburgh get to reap the benfits of sucking ass and putting a piss poor team on the ice, by stockpiling picks, and having money. Did they earn any of it? No. It was handed to them by the league. Teams like Ottawa and Colorado who have been well managed for years are essentailly penalized for their success, dealing players and being forced to pay out more cash than the losers.

You're just grumpy now that there is an even playing field.

It's not even. Quality teams start out at a disadvantage, tied to contracts. But in 5 years when all the shit teams are still shit teams despite the welfare payouts given by the cap, The Avs, Wings, Sens, Devils will still be solid teams.

Did you just not read what I said at all? I didn't accuse Colorado of being one of those teams that throws big money at big free agents. I said they had an unfair advantage over small market teams because of their payroll? Do you know how much the Avalanche were paying their players in 2003?

$59 million

Yeah.

Teams like Pittsburgh get to reap the benfits of sucking ass and putting a piss poor team on the ice, by stockpiling picks, and having money.
Hahahaha, guess what "teams like pittsburgh" have been reaping for the past 5-10 years? It hasn't been Stanley Cups or profit margins. You've had a team that's been blessed with a bloated payroll which has allowed them to field a better team than most, and now you're complaining that these smaller market teams which have had to sit back and helplessly watch their good players get signed away, watch their attendance drop and money vanish because they're not able to financially field a competative enough team to win the cup, you're complaining that they have just as good a chance as Colorado and Detroit now thanks to "stockpiling picks and having money". Do you know why they've got all of those picks? Compensation for losing players, producing terrible seasonal records, and missing the playoffs. Man, those bastard small market teams, if only Colorado was lucky enough to field a below-par team that hasn't made the playoffs in over half a decade, then you'd have more draft picks and the ability to sign a pocketful of veteran players to fill up a roster which was comprised of kids too young to get a job at McDonalds last year.

Seriously, you're breaking my heart Drensch.

Did they earn any of it? No. It was handed to them by the league.
They shouldn't HAVE to earn a level playing field, that's not something anyone's earned. It's something that's been implemented to make the game more fair, and it's already helped it out immensely. The league and players association didn't hand anything to any team. They bettered the game.

Teams like Ottawa and Colorado who have been well managed for years are essentailly penalized for their success, dealing players and being forced to pay out more cash than the losers.
They're not penalized for their success, they're penalized for their bloated payroll. Well not so much Ottawa, because like Vancouver they were a well run and managed team for about $20 million less than the Avalanche.

It's not even. Quality teams start out at a disadvantage, tied to contracts. But in 5 years when all the shit teams are still shit teams despite the welfare payouts given by the cap, The Avs, Wings, Sens, Devils will still be solid teams.
You sure about that? The Avs and Wings aren't looking too good right now. :)

how do you think nordiques/avalanche got the likes of lindros, sundin, nolan? (which all happen to be leafs as of this moment... heh) as well as sakic... and traded for forsberg... and everyone else By sucking ass! stockpiling picks!

Shock and awe!

Teams like Pittsburgh get to reap the benfits of sucking ass and putting a piss poor team on the ice, by stockpiling picks, and having money.
Oh god, you have no idea where you team is from, don't you?

Here's a little reminder:

Mike is so right that it's not even funny, he headshotted you.

The difference between your team and the rest like Edmonton for example, is that they took over a franchise that had been stockpiling the draft picks after being mediocre for more than a decade but unlike Edmonton, they had the money to KEEP these players.
