Mats Sundin, Adam Foote 1989
Owen Nolan 1990
Eric Lindros 1991 = Peter Forsberg
Deadmarsh 1993
Drury, Hejduk 1994

And there's your cup.

Thank you Quebec and thank you Colorado for the money to keep 'em and acquire better players involving these!

how do you think nordiques/avalanche got the likes of lindros, sundin, nolan? (which all happen to be leafs as of this moment... heh) as well as sakic... and traded for forsberg... and everyone else By sucking ass! stockpiling picks! Shock and awe!

Difference is, the avs never got the welfare payout teams get now.

you forgot sakic, drafted in 87 and played in the nhl starting inl 88-89

edit: welfare? it shouldn't take almost a decade for a team to make the playoffs again, it should be far more cyclical.

Blackhawks last made the playoffs in 96-97.

Pittsburgh was 98-99.

Calgary finally reached the playoffs missing 7 years in a row.

and that's just off the top of my head

Some of the newer teams have yet to make the playoffs and would -really- help to build the franchises when they make it to the playoffs.

That's why they get the picks. Take Columbus and Minnesota for example. Assuming that the joke cba never took place, both teams were steadily improving. Both easily would have been playoff teams within a few years. I think it's fair to say that Calgary and Edmonton, Montreal(lesser extent plus shit scouting) paid a bit of a price for being good teams in the early 90s, amassing teams that were very good. Then not doing much after that. Pittsburgh and Chicago had similarly powerful teams, and they paid by not getting picks. Difference is, some teams can scout, and do what it takes to keep the team together.

Well now, that comes as a bit of a shock. I hope that works out well for you guys. Everyone thought he was coming here, at around that amount. I wonder what the story was. Two down today...Mogilny and him. I wonder who we'll target. We really need a winger. We have three fantastic centers and a 4th line center who should be our third (Stajan), the Leafs need a sniper though.

Alright, nevermind. His last season was relatively poor, but he's hardly been injury-plagued. Recovering from abdominal surgery, but that was well over a year ago. ....awesome!

You know how TSN has that comments section where people can comment on each story? This was the fourth response on the Carter signing:

WHAT THIS IS TERRIBLE NEWS AND I BET ITS ALSO FALSE. why would JFJ pass on this guy for 1 milllion. he a perfect fit and his going to go to the useless Canucks whos goalie couldnt stop a beach ball.

this is outragous and if this is reality i will be an extremely angry leaf fan because hes from toronto, he was talking to JFJ and hes gonna go cheap to some1 who doesnt need nor deserve him.

if the canucks get him i hope they finish dead last in the league and everyone on that team doesnt score a single point all season.

What? The Leafs couldn't pony up a lousy mil??

I doubt that's it. Maybe we were never involved in the talks or we're going after someone else. Heck, maybe he even wanted to play for them instead. (see canucks fans....note how nice I am. Cherish the moment)

edit: Is that really Forza? Talk about a different persona

"The Vancouver Canucks are expected to sign winger Anson Carter to a $1-million, one-year deal, sources told The Canadian Press on Tuesday night."

I dunno man. Don't hold any hope. It'll just make you sad when it's official in a few hours. Think higher than Carter! Think Bondra (I feel sick just saying his name) Think Teemu! Think STUMPY THOMAS. At a Leafs forum people were calling Carter the black Jonas Hoglund anyway ;)

How did Mogilny get a 7 million dollar contract over 2 years?!

The Devils are nuts to pay him that much

Salary cap my ass

"I'll play for the leafs again even if i have to take a big paycut" my ass

Haha, what makes you think that
Well Carter didn't have a stellar year last year. Granted he played for the New York Rangers. And the Washington Capitals. And the LA Kings of Anaheim. But still, it'd make more sense to attack prior stats than to point out how the deal hasn't been officially announced yet at midnight.

I still maintain Bondra will be a Leaf. The again, there's always Steve Thomas. :D

Devils have some serious cap troubles now.
18 players at $35,732,794. Still unsigned:

Ari Ahonen
Patrik Elias
Jeff Friesen
David Hale
Paul Martin
Colin White

From tsn.ca:
Mogilny worked very well with young forward Scott Gomez during his first stint with the Devils and will now provide offensive insurance should Patrik Elias be out for any length of time following a bout with hepatitis A.

Elias is believed to have fallen ill while playing in Russia during the NHL lockout. He lost 30 pounds and was hospitalized in the Czech Republic for almost a month earlier this year.

"We all know what he has and we all know what the time frame is," Lamoriello said. "It could be short, it could be a little longer. ... It's the doctors' call, not our call."
I didn't know about Elias - that seriously sucks for him. Hopefully, he shows no symptoms.

God I wish this season would start. Only... 48 days. Sigh...

Oh well. Offseason next year should go like nothin after being through this. =P

I just for some reason wanted to point out to all the Penguins haters (especially Drensch) that, as stated earlier, they weren't handed all of this from the league. The Pens had the 2nd longest playoffs streak behind the Blues, making the playoffs from 1989-2001 I believe. I could be wrong there but I think I'm right. They made the conference finals in 2001, losing in 6 games to the Devils. They've been bad since, but that's what happens when you lose Jagr, Tugnutt, Straka, Lang, Kasparaitis, Boughner, Kovalev etc. not to mention others they lost earlier like Ron Francis, Sergei Zubov, and Kevin Hatcher. Yeah real level playing field where the Pens get raped of their talent and HAVE TO trade for youth and picks to rebuild rather than just being able to keep everyone and then add a Ray Bourque or Adam Foote here or there.

As a pens fan I'm totally psyched about the season and can't wait to see Mario holding the cup one last time (maybe not this year, but soon enough).

Qualifying offer on the table for Theodore in case they don't agree on a long term deal so he could become a UFA next season.

Some of you peeps without a goaltender could get a chance at him next summer. Him and Gainey don't agree on the numbers at all, it's not looking very good.

Drensch is such a sour puss... A true 'nose in the air' whiny bitch.

Comparing a team had high 50's - 60's mil payroll to a team that has been operating on about 25-28 mil average over the past 8 years.

Just cause you had a free wheeling GM that had the deep pockets to pull off all those trades to get those players. Your team reaped the rewards of stupid Philly's trade for Lindros. Where do you think you 'stockpiled all those picks'??

Have fun this year watching teams like Phoenix, Edmonton, Calgary, Anahiem and the Wild pass your team by.

This league needed this salary cap for a long, long time... How the fuck do you think your team got to Colorado in the mid 90's. That team would not have moved if there was a salary cap in place at the time.

Sorry Kingpen, but if you want to cultivate Drensch as your personal hockey thread nemesis for the upcoming season you'll have to share him with the Canucks fans. :lol

I personally am hoping to draw Leaf Nation as my comedic foil for '05-'06. Guaranteed victory and all that. Or else dem, but he'll be banned by March so that'll be no fun. :(

Who said Toronto would end up beating Montreal this year, again?

Who's on the team anyway? Can I apply?

I did and I stand by my prediction. I'll take Sundin over Koivu as captain anyday.

The Leafs have a few really good players... and the the rest of the lineup is filled with real garbage.

The bottom lines are going to be outscored at a spectacular rate.
