You guys are overlooking a detail.

I dont think he was getting 5 millions a year, he wanted (or was ready to accept) a "low" salary for the first 2 years then get his salary automatically up to 6. something millions after getting to the UFA age

Luongo knew he'd get less than his 5 years 25 millions contract but he wants out of Florida. He only has 2 years left there now.

A third rounder for Lydman sounds like shit, but when you really think about his career I doubt you'd find a much better deal. I would have hoped for a second rounder, but a guy like him who never puts up as many points as he could and makes 1.9m a year now is pretty expedable. Mainly of course it's his awful injury history that reduces his trade value, he's had at least 3 concussions that I remember, including like 2 in a row very quickly a few years back (hello, Brett Lindros).

I liked him even with his injuries and his inconsistency - he was just such a good skater and some games he'd control the offense so well. But hey if it's between him and Jordan Leopold.... easy choice there.

Good god a 3rd round pick for Lydman? That is insanity.
Why didn't a team like the Habs bite then? I would have thought that Lydman would have brought back a lot more than a guy like Commodore.

Welcome to the payroll issues, Lydman's 1.9 was too much I guess.

Allright after 2 hours, I've pre-ranked 100 players, and now I give up.

Anyone who actually pre-ranked more than 150 players is straight up HARDCORE.

And man there are like 200 players I don't even know, ranking them could only involve pulling their names from a hat.

And btw With the CBC on strike, how funny would it be...

no no, wrong words...

lets try how angering to the point of mental tramua would it be if there was no hockey night in canada for the begining of the season?

I know i'll still have the nhl network and tsn,

but as far as im concerned the nhl isn't back until I hear the HNIC theme.

They could air hockey without any commentators like they did on their french channel. It was even better, you could hear the players skating and scream.

oh yeah I remember that from a couple years back, that was pretty tight actually.

Ive never been to an nhl game but It sure did make me feel like I was at one.

You know what, I'm split on whether I want cbc back or not come october because both situations have advantages.

It's be great if when they did come back they offered commentators-free audio on SAP.

age is just a number.

When playing some scrims, there would sometimes be a 70 year old player and he played pretty damn good. Mind you he wasn't super fast but he was still being quite competitive.

Ask him what it was like living in an era when the Leafs were competant enough to make the Cup Final.

You're right, age is just a number.... when it looks like this:

but not like this:

It's now my job, nay, obligation, to paint Heatley in a negative light. Let the sudden smear campaign begin!

He killed someone and got away with it. That's all you have to say.

He's lucky he's not a soccer player in the UK...he'd probably hear chants like "You killed Snyder!", or "Murdering Maggot!" or "Fucked your Ferrari, fucked your friend, fucked the law but you'll get yours in the end!", or other dark chants that only the British could provide.

Yeah, heard about the knee injury this morning. Atlanta's going from strength to strength these days. :|

And excuse me?

Who the hell are these people? Toronto celebrities? :lol

If you've worn a Maple Leaf jersey for more then a day in this town, you're a Toronto celebrity. :lol I haven't even heard of the other guys, but Peter Ing played here for a couple seasons and was most famous for stopping Wayne Gretzky (then with the Kings) on a penalty shot on a Saturday night at Maple Leaf Gardens.

I think any predictions should be put on hold until we AT LEAST see the first 10 games or so of the season. The new rules, the players that are older etc etc. All the teams have been shaken up with new faces, guys have had a mega long rest, who knows how all those factors will come into play?

Exactly what I've been saying for two months. People are sounding way too sure of themselves for a league that's seen one of the biggest roster turnovers in terms of significant talent in the history of sports. That's not even getting into the effect the rule changes might have, or the new weighted schedule where division rivals will be beating the shit out of each other.

If the Leafs could pay the useless Domi $1.25 million for this season then why couldn't they pay $1 million for a guy like Selanne?

Because we didn't have enough enforcers on our team, while we're overloaded with sniping forwards!!.....

It's humourous to see Ferguson yapping about the new rules, then not go after a guy like Selanne who could arguably benefit the most from them (he's one of the players who took the biggest dive over the last five years as the clutch and grab era gained steam). I hope Selanne scores 40 goals.

Luongo gets 3.2 in ARBITRATION

Watch everyone who filed for arbitration quickly sign whats on the table :lol

Should have taken that 5 year deal and ran to the bank.

:lol :lol :lol Sucker...well, unless it was deliberate.

I'm starting a rumor. Bob Gainey has been heard saying he didn't need any replacement for Patrice Brisebois, because he's the replacement, himself. He's going to be the first GM-player in history.

1 year...So it's not all bad (for him) as he'll probably get a much bigger contract next year.

And like they're airing CFL now.

:lol The Toronto/Edmonton coverage was some of the most pitiful sports broadcasting I've ever seen. Even for the CFL, it was bush league.

Yet another fallacy that people like to trumpet about the Leafs. They've actually gotten younger this year -- average age 29.2. I hazzard to guess there's alot "older" teams out there than the Leafs.

Malkin rocks!

http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/news_story.asp?id=134632

Oh wait, no he doesn't.

While he admitted that the chance to win with a powerful Magnitogorsk team and play for the Russian national team weighed heavily in his decision, Malkin also indicated another influence in his own interview posted on RusHockey.com, telling the site, "Actually, I was ready to compete with Alexander (Ovehckin) and Sidney (Crosby) for the Calder Trophy. But my agents told me that it'd be easier to win the trophy in a year."

The igloo's scoreboard has a better of falling and crushing the entier team than that happening

Sure Crosby has the best chance of winning this year but there's just way too many candidate and dark horses this year. I say 20% for crosby, 15% for Phaneuf and 10% for Ovechkin. Then again, im no expert on prospects...

If Crosby doesnt win it... and with all that talent around him I think he probably will....

but if he doesnt my pick is...
drumroll plz

:lol To have that influence your decision is one thing, I'm sure deep down a lot of guys in that position would think about stuff like individual awards and bonus' when they have a choice like that. But to talk about it out loud, never mind tell a reporter, is pretty funny.

I don't think Crosby will win ROY, if not Krazy Alex Ovechkin I'll take Lehtonen as my preseason Calder Trophy pick. He dominated the AHL for a bit and now he'll be thrown into a #1 role on a suspect defensive team - that's a recipe for the sort of huge shots against and S% numbers that look good to voters. Crosby has a shot due to the hype (and he is pretty damn good) but I think he's just too young to light it up offensive on a consistent basis.

Is there something wrong with the water in Vancouver? This is even worst than that Belfour for Luongo and Richard rumour (well not really but still...)

Perezhogin! God that would rule!
Any other year he might've had a chance but not this year aka the most glorious season in the last 15 years

Take this with a grain of salt:

to Montreal: Brad Richards

to Tampa Bay: Michael Ryder + (draft pick)

This information allegedly is coming from Michael Ryder's younger brother of all people, but it's definitely not confirmed at this point.

HUGE.

I pray thats true, Richards on the Habs has been on my wish list for years.

I knew since 2001 that he was going to bust out and be one of the top in the league, and then it happened in 2003.

I like to build franchises in 2k hockey and for the last 3 games he's been my captain.

I'll tell you guys right now that If this happens your looking at your next Canadiens captain, without a doubt.

And where the hell do you keep getting these rumors from Mike? net? radio?

That's better than having been the backup for Tommy Salo.
:lol

As far as these batshit insane rumours go, they have to be coming out of the Team 1040 - those guys cough up nutty trade deals like they're hairballs.

I think the rumours this offseason are about 10x nuttier than normal, probably due to a lot of reasons. The year with no hockey has reporters and fans going a bit batty, the CBA and cap issues can give outlandish rumours a bit of credibility (and hockey writers are still only marginally more clued into how the cap works than most fans right now I think) and just general enthusiasm for the upcoming year. Not only the internet rumours - which are always totally fucking insane - but shit getting reported on the radio or in newspapers seems much more outlandish the last month than in years past. I think it's just more media outlets are pulling some hockey board fanboy's wetdream of a trade and running it as a rumour because, while insane, a lot of them are fun to think about.

Speaking of...
It's wacky rumor time again!

The latest doozy, apparently reported by a Kitchener, Ontario radio station, has the Toronto Maple Leafs involved with three other teams in a series of trades.

The deals would have the Leafs trade Mats Sundin and a first-round pick to Florida for Luongo and Jay Bouwmeester, Ed Belfour and a third-round pick to Tampa Bay for Brad Richards, and defenseman Ken Klee to the Sabres for either Martin Biron or Mika Noronen.

So these deals break down like this: The Leafs make out like bandits and the other teams get hosed. Hmmm, this "rumor" wouldn't have gotten its start on a Leafs message board, would it?
When goddamn Lyle Richardson is the Voice of Reason you know the hockey media has gotten too Eklundized. :lol

leafs trading sundin? Not a chance. Sundin is one of the most consistent top-tier players in the league.

the eklund post was funny... he was like omfg belfour?!!? what about sundin dumbass? :P

.... Dammit Dopey, this bullshit make-believe trade has the Leafs DRASTICALLY IMPROVING in every way! You're actually telling me you wouldn't trade Sundin for Roberto Luongo and Jay Bouwmeester?! In order to flip Belfour and a pick for Brad Richards?!? John Ferguson Jr would kill you and everyone you know to pull off that trade! :lol

I hope you get first overall in the fantasy league draft so you can take Sundin before anyone else gets him. :D

well i just get pissed off. It might be better for the leafs but it's like tearing the heart out of the team. I always hate these "blockbuster trades".

Yahoo ranked Sundin 3rd overall for a reason

And I'm sure Yahoo knows more than you do

BigJonsson said:

:lol No, if Yahoo or anything or anyone has Sundin ranked as the third overall hockey player - whether in fantasy hockey or whatever - then they do not know more than me. Because any jackass knows Sundin isn't the third ranked anything in the NHL. Don't get me wrong, he's a very good player and I like him, but shit find me the link showing me that Yahoo has him ranked 3rd overall right now. Please. Because while he may have been that high 2 years ago due to Yahoo's goofy 6x4 stats for hockey, he sure won't be ranked #3 going into this year.

Again, :lol.

EDIT: sure enough, it WAS due to Yahoo's default rankings. The same '03-'04 rankings that have Bill Guerin #4 overall. And Keith Tkachuk #6. I guess that means, like Yahoo, you have Guerin ranked in your own personal top 5 players in hockey list right? Because I'm sure Yahoo knows more than you do.

If richards ends up here i will buy a jersey as soon as its announced, seriously.
Give me the choice between him and lecavalier and I pick Richards, he is the fucking bomb.

I highly doubt it will happen though.
