Calder... I know youre not trying to say Chris Chucko is better than Rob Schremp.
And I sure as hell know youre not making fun of the Oilers drafting. If theres one fan not in a position to talk... its a Flames fan.

Haha, I knew you'd know I was talking about Schremp and obviously I don't mean it. I was pissed to not get him. :(

And as a victim of the worst pro-sports drafting in the entire world from 1990-1999, (ok, a bit past that) all I can do is laugh at the miscues from our archrivals. Basically I'm counting on the Oilers making a mistake at 25 because that's the only way the Flames get anything worth having.... the top 10 looks very good but the back end of the first round doesn't look like anything special. So much for an extra stocked 2-year window of a draft.

Good for the Pens. For a team that was so high not to long ago, and took a major fall into the league basement, I for one hope they can start back up again (if Crosby isn't Lindros jr). Outside of the Canucks and the rest of the Canadian teams, Pittsburgh and maybe Chicago were the most deserving I think.

I am not sure the Leafs even have their second round pick...I think it was traded away in the Leech deal.

This brings up an excellent question. Did any team trade their picks for last year's draft that never happened? Ultimate coup if so, but unlikely since the lockout was known for at least a year before it happened. I remember the FA signings were very strange last time, as players and teams prepared for the lockout.

Anyway, as someone who cares not about hockey, congrats fans. You waited it out and it's good that there is enthusiasm in the fanbase. Oh yeah, thank god Carolina didn't get Crosby. Would that franchise please leave? Raleigh NC isn't a major league city, nor is it a hockey city. Shit like that is what got the NHL in trouble.

Oh yeah, whatever happened to the contraction idea? I guess that isn't going to happen, too bad, every league needs some trimming but the NHL needs it bad. Are the problems in the NHL fixed or is this just a bandaid? Do they have a TV contract yet?

Crosby won't be Lindros Jr. It was precisely Lindros' LACK of vision that sidelined him so frequently. He would have been an instant hall-of-famer otherwise.

Last year's draft did happen. I suppose you mean this year's draft that was projected not to happen but did happen, then the answer is no, all teams kept their 1st rounder.

Muckler, Ottawa's GM, was on the Team1200 a while ago and he said that they're mainly looking at Carey price and will take him if he's available.

DOH!

Heh, Gainey was on here and änswering a question if the Habs would be in the UFA market he said "There is many possibilities, there is a lot of players available like Forsberg".

Wtf? :O

Yeah he is but I'm not used of a Habs GM mentionning a player like Forsberg during the UFA market.

Then again Gainey went to get Kovalev and Bonk, finally we might start getting big players up here.

Considering this is Gainy, i wouldn't be surprised. Gainy IMO is one of the most underrated GMs.

I can't believe hw much times have changed. In the late 80's the Habs were my most hated team in sports, now I'm happy to see them do well.

Hehe, probably because they arent that supreme powerhouse they used to be and they went down the shit hole and now hopefully they'll be a contender in a few seasons.

Damn, I can't find a list of UFA/FA's anywhere. What is this shit I'm hearing about Niedermayer going to the Canucks? That an actual rumour or numbnuts on Sportsnet just flapping his gums again? I know Niedermayer said something about wanting out of NJ (duh) and wanting to play in the west and the Canucks would be a good fit for him... unless they resign all their FA's, which wouldn't leave them much to offer Scott under the cap.

Anyone know what Pierre McGuire was talking about when he offered Tie Domi an olive branch? Must have missed something, but I was reading about Domi being his usual dumbass self after the PA meeting.

For those of us who got screwed over (ie, the NW division :lol) let's look at what might be available from 21-30 based on TSN's top 30 projections.
21. Guillaume Latendresse

TEAM: Drummondville Voltigeurs (QMJHL)
POSITION: Left Wing
HEIGHT: 6'2
WEIGHT: 215 lbs.
BORN: 05/14/87 - Ste-Catherine, QC
NOTES AND ACCOMPLISHMENTS: Named to the 2003-2004 QMJHL All-Rookie Team...Scored 53 goals and 137 points in 118 games in two seasons with Drummondville...Helped lead Canada to a silver medal at the 2005 World-18 Championship. (Photo: Getty Images)
BOB MCKENZIE'S TAKE: The Drummondville winger is a tough skater, but if you think he can get there, then Latendresse will go much higher than his consensus ranking of 21, perhaps even in the top 10. He excelled at the U-18 world championship in the spring, a top offensive player who at least one team has rated in the top 10. But skating concerns often translate into a long wait on draft day, although his strength and competitiveness are high end.

22. Matt Lashoff

TEAM: Kitchener Rangers (OHL)
POSITION: Defence
HEIGHT: 6'2
WEIGHT: 205 lbs.
BORN: 09/29/86 - Albany, N.Y.
NOTES AND ACCOMPLISHMENTS: Missed games at the beginning of 2004-2005 season with mono, but managed to play 44 games...Was named to 2004 U.S. Junior Evaluation Camp roster...
BOB MCKENZIE'S TAKE: The Kitchener Ranger defender likely would have been a high end first rounder last year if he were eligible, but his second year in the OHL was injury plagued and inconsistent. He suffered from mononucleosis early in the year and got a concussion to finish it off. In between, he wasn't as good as he was a year ago so some scouts have dropped him into the second round while others think he could still go in the first half of the first round.

23. Tuukka Rask

TEAM: Ilves Tampere (Fin Jr)
POSITION: Goaltender
HEIGHT: 6'1
WEIGHT: 190 lbs.
BORN: 03/10/87 - Savonlinna, Fin.
NOTES AND ACCOMPLISHMENTS: Appeared in four major tournaments as a 16-year old - the 5-Nations in Switzerland, the Viking Cup in Camrose, Alberta, the 5-Nations in Pori, Finland, and in the 2004 U-18 World Championship in Minsk. (Photo: Jouni Valkeeniemi/Pakkalan Mediatalo)
BOB MCKENZIE'S TAKE: The consensus choice to be the second goaltender selected, behind Carey Price, Rask was initially penciled in as a top 10 pick. Now, he's more likely to be a late first rounder. The bloom started to go off the Rask rose early in the season because of lack of activity -- his senior team in Finland wasn't playing him but wouldn't permit him to play for the junior team -- but as the season wore on, he re-established his credentials as a top stopper.

24. Brendan Mikkelson

TEAM: Portland Winter Hawks (WHL)
POSITION: Defence
HEIGHT: 6'2
WEIGHT: 177 lbs.
BORN: 06/22/87 - St. Albert, AB
NOTES AND ACCOMPLISHMENTS: Earned a spot on the Portland roster as a 16-year-old in 2003-2004...his father Bill was a defenseman for four seasons in the NHL...chosen to play for Team Pacific in the 2004 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge...played for Canada at the 2004 Under-18 Junior World Cup in Slovakia. (Photo: Portland Winter Hawks)
BOB MCKENZIE'S TAKE: The strength of the Portland Winter Hawk defenceman's game is skating or passing the puck out of his own end, but he should not be confused with an offensive defenceman. He's rated as just okay defensively, in large part because he has to get a lot stronger to play at the pro level.

25. Ondrej Pavelec

TEAM: Kladno Jr. (Czech)
POSITION: Goaltender
HEIGHT: 6'2
WEIGHT: 180 lbs.
BORN: 08/31/87 - Czech Rep.
NOTES AND ACCOMPLISHMENTS: Backstopped Czechs to a fourth-place finish at the 2005 Under-18 Championship, posting one shutout, a 2.05 goals-against average and .931 save percentage in seven games...taken 11th overall by the QMJHL's Cape Breton Screaming Eagles in 2005 CHL Import Draft. (Photo: www.hokej.cz)
BOB MCKENZIE'S TAKE: The Czech netminder is, like Dominik Hasek, an acrobatic, athletic and competitive goalie who was named to the all-tourney team at the U-18 world championship in April. He also played well for the Czechs at the U-18 challenge last summer, but the Czechs chose not to start him in the championship game against Canada for reasons that still have scouts scratching their heads. At least one team has him rated as the No. 1 goalie in the draft, but he is the consensus No. 3 behind Price and Rask.

26. Devin Setoguchi

TEAM: Saskatoon Blades (WHL)
POSITION: Right Wing
HEIGHT: 6'0
WEIGHT: 180 lbs.
BORN: 01/01/87 - Taber, AB
NOTES AND ACCOMPLISHMENTS: Helped lead Canada to a silver medal at the 2005 World-18 Championship...was a member of Canada's Under-18 team that won the gold medal...as a rookie, he netted 13 goals and 31 points in 66 games. (Photo: Getty Images)
BOB MCKENZIE'S TAKE: A top offensive player, Setogouchi can finish but did so in unbelievably streaky fashion this season. When he was hot, no one was hotter, but his game lacked consistency and he suffered through a horrendous slump. Some wonder if he can deliver offensively on a consistent basis at the next level, though his supporters would point out he always gets his goals.

27. Michael Blunden

TEAM: Erie Otters (OHL)
POSITION: Right Wing
HEIGHT: 6'4
WEIGHT: 210 lbs.
BORN: 12/15/86 - Gloucester, ON
NOTES AND ACCOMPLISHMENTS: Selected 18th overall by the Erie Otters in 2002...helped Team Ontario to a bronze medal at the 2003 Canada Winter Games...represented Canada at the Under-18 Junior World Cup in the Czech Republic. (Photo: Getty Images)
BOB MCKENZIE'S TAKE: The assessments on the Erie Otters' late 1986 birth date are all over the map. Some teams have him as a mid-first rounder, others wouldn't take him in the top 30. He's a big, strong power forward type who can skate but there are concerns about offensive limitations. He had off-season back surgery last summer and didn't round into form until late in the season, when he was at times dominant.

28. Ryan Stoa

TEAM: USA NTDP
POSITION: Centre
HEIGHT: 6'3
WEIGHT: 200 lbs.
BORN: 08/13/87 - Bloomington, Minn.
NOTES AND ACCOMPLISHMENTS: Helped lead the U.S. National Under-18 Team to gold at the 2005 Under-18 Championship in the Czech Republic. ...won gold with the U.S. Under-18 Team at the Four Nations Cup...also helped the Under-17 Team capture gold at the 2003 U-17 Four Nations Cup...has committed to play next season at the University of Minnesota. (Photo: Getty Images)
BOB MCKENZIE'S TAKE: A member of the U.S. under-18 program, Stoa is one of those prospects who has all the tools to be a good one, but doesn't seem to put it all together. That is, he is not yet the sum of his parts. Scouts would like to see him be more aggressive on a consistent basis and compete harder. As a result, he is a candidate to slip out of the first round.

29. Scott Jackson

TEAM: Seattle Thunderbirds (WHL)
POSITION: Defence
HEIGHT: 6'4
WEIGHT: 200 lbs.
BORN: 02/05/87 - Salmon Arm, BC
NOTES AND ACCOMPLISHMENTS: Had a plus/minus rating of plus-26 with 49 penalty minutes in 2004-2005...invited to participate in Canada's National Junior Team Development Camp for the 2006 World Junior Championship...played with Team Pacific at the Under-17 World Championship in St. John's. (Photo: Getty Images)
BOB MCKENZIE'S TAKE: The Seattle Thunderbird blueliner received the same rating from every scout TSN interviewed -- a late first round pick. Not a second rounder, a late first rounder, to a man. The big blueliner isn't a pretty skater, but he exhibits great leadership, plays in all key situations and has good hockey sense and defensive positioning.

30. Dan Bertram

TEAM: Boston College (HE)
POSITION: Right Wing
HEIGHT: 5'11
WEIGHT: 175 lbs.
BORN: 01/14/87 - Calgary, AB
NOTES AND ACCOMPLISHMENTS: Played 2003-04 season with Alberta Junior Hockey League's Camrose Kodiaks and took Rookie of the Year honours...played for Canada in the 2005 World Under-18 Championship and won a silver medal...one of 44 players going to Canada's National Junior Team Development Camp in August. (Photo: Boston College)
BOB MCKENZIE'S TAKE: The Boston College freshman -- he fast-tracked to play in the NCAA this season -- played well for Canada at the U-18 world championship, but he has neither blinding speed nor great size, so he is considered a borderline first rounder who could easily slip into the second round. Still, he plays the game hard and smart. This is a character player who coaches love to have on their team. Where some players are not yet the sum of their parts, Bertram would be greater than the sum of his.

I'm biased, but I like Devin Setoguchi after seeing him on some Blades and U18 games. If a guy like Kenndal McArdle or - dare to dream - Martin Hanzal were to fall that would be quite good too. :D

YABBA-DABBA-DO! CROSBY AND LEMIEUX!

"Malone to Crosby, SCORES!"
"Crosby to Recchi, SCORES!"
"Crosby, Crosby, CROSBY!...SCORES!"

...and with that, my boycott of the upcoming NHL season comes to an end.

If the Pens get Kovalev

Wow

I wonder how big of an "if" it is at this point. It would be the glory days all over again...all offence and no defence. Haha. The Pens need 2 good defenders and a goalie and they're a solid playoff team. Jackman and Tarnstrom can only do so much on the blueline.

MALKIN AND CROSBY, YES.

I'm weak. :(

Malkin, Crosby, Lemieux, Recchi, Morozov (I hope he's coming back), and the continued development of the (hopefully) SUPER SOPHOMORE, Ryan Malone. The goaltending situation in Pittsburgh is also err...always interesting.

Marc-Andrey Fleury?

He hasn't been so hot, even at the AHL level. I'd honestly rather have Caron in there at this point, although it would be great to see MAF bounce back with a solid season. If he can somehow pull a rabbit out of the hat, then these Pens will be flying into the playoffs this season.

Forsberg and Naslund to Toronto? Is the cap 90mill now? :lol

Forsberg's not going anywhere except back to the Avs I bet, and Naslund will likely resign unless the Canucks can only offer him significantly less than another contending team can. Naslund has a team that fits him pretty well in Vancouver and it's tough to imagine a better team having more cap space with which to offer him a contract than the Canucks have.

And yeah, at this point his first shift Crosby pretty much has to enter the arena via zipline like Sting in WCW and pound the entire opposing team with a black bat, then stickhandle a million miles an hour skating backwards around all their unconscious bodies for a few minutes before scoring on a slap shot from the red line.

BigJonsson said:
I heard Sundin is trying to convince Forsberg and Naslund to sign with Toronto...
I'm not sure about Forsberg, but I can confirm the Naslund rumour. The Toronto brass urged Sundin to find someone with ample experience, asking "is Mats Naslund still alive?"

That reminds me...remember Mario's first shift? O_O

So true. Me and a buddy at work were talking about that yesterday, and the delusional nature of Leafs fans. "We'll get him and him and him. Why? Because EVERYONE wants to play for the Leafs."

I'm not sure how much of it is the Leaf fans. A lot of it is created by our awful media, and that can give us Leaf fans a bad rep.

In a lot of ways, this is huge news too.

NHL has new transfer deal with IIHF

TSN.ca Staff

7/23/2005 12:18:31 PM

The agreements are falling into place for the NHL.

Now that the new collective bargaining agreement has been ratified by owners and players, TSN has learned the NHL has new a Player Transfer Agreement with the International Ice Hockey Federation.

Sources tell TSN that the tenative IIHF agreement includes provisions for the orderly and prescribed transfer of all European players, including Russians, an issue which many thought would have scuttled any chance of getting a new deal with the IIHF.

The Russians had been insisting they negotiate their own separate agreement with the NHL, but NHL commissioner Gary Bettman and IIHF president Rene Fasel, sources say, concluded the tentative agreement that includes the Russians during the course of the 310-day NHL lockout.

Now, sources say there's a one-time provision in the new agreement that effectively makes this open season on any NHL prospects in Europe, even if they are under contract to European clubs. NHL teams apparently have a deadline of Aug. 15 to sign any of their European prospects, even if they're under contract.

The only additional provision to that is if they fail to keep the player on the roster for at least 30 games this season, there are some financial penalties to be paid.

This new agreement, with the open window on all European prospects until Aug. 15, would, for example, allow a team like the Pittsburgh Penguins to sign No. 2 overall pick (2004) Evgeni Malkin even though Malkin is under contract to a Russian club team for this season.

After Aug. 15, though, the window apparently closes and only those players whose contracts with European teams have expired would be permitted to sign in the NHL.
The fact the Russian Federation is back under the umbrella agreement is *great* news - some ppl thought the more strict entry level cap of the new CBA would make some russian players decide to skip the NHL but the lack of a transfer deal with the Russian teams would have grown into a much, much bigger problem for NHL teams. Many scouts and executives were thinking that it would lead to fewer Russians even getting drafted by NHL teams because they'd have no idea how much it would cost to buy out their Russian contracts or even if the Russian team would do it at all.

Malkin and Crosby...I really hope the Pens can keep them around for years to come and build a team around them. Heck, put Malone and Jackman on there too.

I wish the season would start tomorrow, I'm so excited!
