I feel relieved to finally be able to remove my choke avatar. New season, new team....or not from what DW has been saying.

I'm unfortunately expecting the Sharks to roll out the exact same team as last year.
The fuck has that guy been saying?

I actually don't think the team needs to be changed up that much anymore. What they need is an attitude change. Also just because most of the team will be the same doesn't mean Marleau still has the C.

The judge very likely won't outright award Balsillie the team, he sounded very much on the "make happy payment to shut the NHL up" line of thought. The league's ability to appeal could be extremely limited if ruled they don't own the team.

I think it's 50/50 right now, honestly. I'll be shocked if the judge says anything but to negotiate a settlement price; no matter what the NHL says, Balsillie has 75m+ of funds that could be going to creditors that the NHL's partners can't match.

The real dealbreaker is the relocation fee; the NHL automatically wins if:

1. Balsillie Bid - relocation fee - gretzky payout < the NHL's offer, or:
2. The NHL successfully stalls into next season

A relocation fee over 10m is absurd and probably unprecedented by NHL standards, but it's hard to say what the Judge will accept (and Balsillie's camp has already accused the league of asking for US $100m - a full two thirds of the net worth of the franchise!)

The most reassuring element is the idiocy on the part of the NHL's legal team. Their greatest hits from this trial include:
- claiming US->Canada moves have never happened
- questioning the financial strength of the NFL
- claiming they have owners waiting without actually naming them. In bankruptcy court.

As a Sens fan, I personally can't wait til the draft and to see what happens with Heatley.

I'm still stunned he wants out.

Ottawa could come out the winner or the loser in the trade, it'll definately show whether Murray is a good GM.

Can't wait to see what happens.

Wild Hire New Coach

New Minnesota Wild general manager Chuck Fletcher has wasted no time putting his stamp on the team by hiring Todd Richards as the Wild's new head coach.

Richards has a history with Fletcher who hired him to coach the Pittsburgh Penguins' AHL affiliate Scranton-Wilkes/Barre in 2006. The 43-year old Richards spent last season as an assistant for the San Jose Sharks under Todd McLellan.

Sources have also told TSN that Wild assistant general manager Tom Lynn has been let go.

A former defenceman, Richards was drafted in the 2nd round, 33rd overall, by the Montreal Canadiens in the 1985 NHL Entry draft. He made his NHL debut with the Hartford Whalers in 1990. His NHL career consisted of eight regular season games, posting four assists. He also appeared in 11 playoff games with three assists.

Unbelievable day.

So tired, but so happy.

Was 5 feet from the cup, got some skin from J. Staal, and loved every minute of it.

My life is now complete.

That is, until we repeat. ;p

Wild should be happy, this hiring from Fletcher was no surprise. Richards actually was ahead of Dan Bylsma when the penguins were looking to ax Therrien. They were not able to do it easily since he had migrated to San Jose for the season.

Damn, was rooting for Pierre Mcguire.

I can only assume you hate Minnesota for wishing that upon them. That, or you see him coaching as the lesser of two evil between that and having to listen to him verbally suck Mike Richards cock all season long again as a commentator.

Great pics Kassatsu. None of mine turned out that well. :/

Guerin and Talbot were fucking hilarious. Loved the 'shush'-ing. Malkin stole the show though, guy is fucking hilarious. Looking forward to putting my Stanley Cup Champions patch on my Malkin jersey. Too bad I can't put it on his Russian national jersey. ;/

It must be nice. Though I would think I would get bored after a while. Half the fun is complaining about the Jays/Raps/Leafs.

I'd like to try the boredom. All I know is I wasn't bored in 93 when the Jays were trying to repeat. Those were great days.

I notice the TSN story has removed the part about the decision "coming tonight."

Now that we can talk about the Leafs again, who do you guys think they're going to draft first? I sure hope it isn't Jared Cowen. I was pissed when we passed on Filatov for Schenn last year, I don't think I'll be able to handle taking another boring shutdown d-man.

Disappointed by the decision, but won't be disappointed when the NHL finally loses so much money on Phoenix that the team folds.

I was hoping Balsillie would win just to spite Bettman and because it was karmicly bullshit how a small but hockey rabid market like Winnipeg lost their team to Phoenix of all places.

Realistically, Hamilton (or another locale in the greater Toronto area) will probably get a team within the next 5-10 years. But it'll be on the NHL's terms and come in as an expansion team so that the owners can divvy up the expansion fee without cutting the players in on the deal. Knowing Bettman, Kansas City or Las Vegas would probably be the sister franchise too. Urgghhhh....

Balsillie has to be patient. One or two more years. The economic situation will be worse and the league will be begging Balsillie to buy a team.

FUCK!

$300Million in losses since 1996 and Bettman still wants to keep it in the middle of a motherfucking desert.

An NBA franchise in Nunavut has a greater chance of success.

FUCK

League is fucking retarded. That fucking Count needs to learn how to fucking count. Bettman should be sucking on Balsillies balls for having a filthy rich high profile owner interested in a team instead of fighting him tooth and nail. Bettman is such a fucking tool.

Too much travel?

This sucks. 7 Canadian teams would've been cool. Plus, it just makes good business sense for the NHL to move a team out of a shitty market into a good one. I hope they continue to lose millions in the desert - would be fun to watch.

Wow I was really close to both you guys too. I was at 5 PPG place standing in a notch in the building on some paint buckets right by where these pictures were taken. My phone went dead at the parade and I just got back to my place so I'll try and load up some photos tomorrow.

I've hardly posted at all in this thread because every time I have in the past the Pens have lost. So I banned myself from the thread for the playoffs. Good deal, plus I think the rest of the forum is happy to not have another Pens fan to listen to.

Wow, so the NHL stall tactics did work, because the Judge basically said there wasn't enough time. I wonder if Balsillie will ante up again towards a next season, or if it's basically a done deal to the sox owner now...

EDIT: So much for the Coyotes creditors. There goes their only shot at substantial payback. :lol

Yeah, Balsillie wanted to put Hamilton in the Northwest Division, as much fucking sense as that made.

So that means Vancouver, who already has the worst travel schedule in the league, would have to fly to yet another time zone, or they'd get moved to the Pacific Division and lose out on their best rivalries.

It looks like I'm the only person here that's glad that it didn't go through, but there's not one way you can lose Phoenix and gain Hamilton without creating a major headache for the conferences/divisions.

To me, this is the most important thing to think about. As if people weren't hesitant enough to put money into a hockey organization in America, Bettman is now telling you that the league won't even let you TRY to get your money back if the team fails.

Stupid, stupid move. This is going to push businessmen away from the NHL.

Game 7 ratings news:

• Game 7 on NBC was the most-watched NHL game in 36 years, with an average of 8 million viewers. Game 6 of the 1973 finals between Montreal and Chicago attracted 9.4 million viewers on NBC.

Not bad for a Friday night. Hopefully the douchebags at ESPN notice the recent upswing in NHL popularity.

I'm kinda surprised he even had an opinion on that; I don't think he would have any say in the matter apart from voicing it as a question in the general meeting.

I don't think there's much question that his only choices would be Central Division or the Eastern Conference. I'm guessing Central as no doubt there are other teams that could flexibly move there (It's still insane, but...)

Anyway, my point is that winning a team would at the very least force the NHL to disregard his wishes regarding the division. :lol

I guess I'm the only one happy as shit that BALDzilly didn't get his way. I certainly think the Coyotes need to do something with all of their losses from a business point, but man they have such a nice arena close to me so I can catch Pens games.

I'm thinking ultimately Bettman has a plan to move the coyotes to a more lucrative city then Hamilton though where it would divide fan bases. I gotta think Las Vegas and Seattle have to be at the top of the list. KC is logical, but we would have to be worried that maybe farmers in KC don't like hockey and only like college sports ... I would give a lot of thought to moving the franchise back to either Hartford, Winnipeg or Quebec City again....

shitting in the alley outside your window
It's not all over for Balsillie, they still have to find a buyer willing to keep the team local. Bettman coming out and saying 4 other groups are willing to keep the team there could've just been bs to help sway the judge. Fact is, this would have been a piss poor precedent to set for skirting league rules through bankruptcy. Coyotes aren't in the clear yet by any means.

The Bruins re-signed Peter Chiarelli to a multi-year contract. He's done a lot for the team in the three years he's been here (along with his right hand man Cam fucking Neely), so it's pretty key that they were able to lock him up early. I don't even want to think about what the team would look like right now without him and Julien.

If they want to keep the team in the US why not move it to Milwaukee, I would say Portland too but Bettman already burned those bridges with Paul Allen.

If you have to have it in America make it Vegas. Even if it fails, it would have been worth a shot. KC i don't buy at all.

No! My 'Hawks just started getting their fans back....a team in Milwaukee would take fans away!!

Actually, I think Milwaukee is a perfect city for an NHL team. Hockey is pretty big in Wisconsin and I think the geographical rivalries with Chicago, Minnesota, and Detroit could be a huge positive.
