When isn't this Leafs team fighting? Jesus Christ! :lol
Still watching Caillou. Remind me why I ever got the PVR and why I record kids shows. *sigh*. I gotta start getting the kids to bed at 6

allow me to be the first to say that the amount of leafs fan activity in this thread, and it being just the preseason, is quite disheartening. and where's the self-deprecation gone?? given way to arrogance. no fucking middle ground with these people
Sharks-Age has the self deprecation quotient filled up.

I'd be happier if they moved the team to Seattle. The Emerald City should have been chosen over Phoenix, Tampa Bay, Miami, and Nashville. More to the point: Since the Sonics have left, there isn't a Fall/Winter pro-sports franchise to compete with. My guess is that if a move to Kansas City doesn't pan out, one struggling team will be relocated to the Pacific Nor'west.
If enough teams end up having to move, I'd like to see Milwaukee and Hartford get teams too.

wow. looks like balsillie might be changing the game in the court today

says team will not move this year - possibly the whole season - might move during olympics - offering glendale $25 million even if appeals fail

watch out bettman - they're making a big push for this team

note to NHL : if you're trying to get a ruling on your side, you don't say this

It sounds like the key point as far as the judge is concerned is that Balsillie's various changes (city offer, extension) are indication that mediation would work. The NHL is deathly afraid of mediation because they can't appeal ANYTHING the mediator decides on. :lol (This is why they made those comments about key issues.)

Apparently Glendale isn't very impressed by the 25/50 offer, but the keep-the-team-for-a-year bit will turn some heads since the NHL has basically said the same thing. I don't think the city is willing to budge from their 25 year lease demand though.

Wildcard berths that can't beat teams without a winning record should have homefield advantage

Not sure if anybody saw this ESPN.com debacle. 4 analysts talking about how to realign the league. Barry Melrose is the only one with any sense (of course, maybe I'm biased because he has the Wings moving back into the Eastern Conference where they should have been all along).

One analyst wants expansion into Europe while another wants the NHL to expand to 40 teams in smaller cities. Yes, that's right--expand.

:lol the 40 teams one is hilarious. "Team Ontario?" Also, I think a St.Paul-Hartford game would be the only one in NHL history with less TV viewers then players on the ice.

Melrose's was the only one that made any sense up until he said Saskatoon. I know he's from around there but there's no way Saskatoon is big enough for an NHL team. :lol

If I had my way I'd probably realign the league like this:

Gone: Florida, Atlanta, Nashville(sorry sef), Phoenix, and Columbus
Added: Seattle, Milwaukee, Hartford, Winnipeg, and Quebec City

campbell is triple shifting?
I'd tolerate his shenanigans with the puck if he'd play at least a smidge of defense tonight.

It must suck to have to constantly listen to all these idiots wishing that your team was moved somewhere else.

Canucks.com is awesome. Watching the game right now. Is Heatley playing tonight? I haven't heard his name yet.

Edit: Goddamn Big Joe is actually looking good tonight! He just rushed a player who was standing behind the net, stole the puck, and passed it for an almost goal. Looked good.

Edit2: Heatley isn't playing. Nichol is looking really good. Thanks sef :D

Edit3: Malhotra was also signed to a one year contract.

Hey, I'd be all for Nashville staying and Detroit getting dropped if the Preds would just get rid of that fuckin goal song. :lol

eYeah....if the Leafs were 1-4 in preseason instead of 4-1 all the Leaf haters would be bashing the hell out of them. "SEE THEY STILL STINK!" :lol

Preseason or not, winning is always better than losing.
lolz? if the leafs were 1-4 you would hear fuck all. preseason records, winning or losing, matter so very little. even individual performances are hard to gauge* since you have to consider who these players are up against (often backup goalies and minor leaguers)

* though they're worth talking about

Kent Huskins is a fucking idiot.

Nabby, pull your shit together.

Sharks pulled the old bait and switch on the fans. Look good for two periods then give up 3 goals in 5 minutes.

I was at the Sabres-Leafs game tonight, and man that Leafs squad was unimpressive. Keep in mind I have no idea who was and wasn't an NHLer on their team, but they were outmatched by half a Sabres team sitting their top players. I'm a little less worried about them for now. We'll see once Kessel arrives.

Still awesome to see some hockey again! Can't wait for the start of the year.

Hey, Acid08. Good game, huh?
It actually was a very good game. Really tense. I'm not really sure how the Canucks spinny goal counted considering there was absolutely no forward momentum when he actually took his shot which disqualifies the goal. Eh whatever though, preseason.

How was the crowd in terms of size? I was hearing ads on the radio today for minipacks and it makes me wonder if the high sales of the previous few years are finally starting to taper off... my hope is that sales dropping will force them to put a better team together.

Announced attendance was 11k, but that seemed a little high. The whole upper bowl was maybe 10% occupied. You've got to think missing the playoffs two years will level the sales off a bit, but for the ticks I got this year, I had to adjust my sections because of price-level sellouts.

..I can't get too upset about the team - it's not like they're being cheap. Only 3M or so in cap space available now. They'll be alright if Vanek is the stud I think he will be and Miller can stay healthy this year. They might live to regret the contracts they gave Pominville and Connolly, but the real drains are Hecht, Tallinder and Lydman in terms of productivity/$.

Hopefully we'll see some of the younger guys up this year (Gerbe, Kennedy, Myers, etc) and see what they've got. I'm still fairly confident they're a playoff team when healthy.

I'm so glad you made the bolded point, it was what I was going to say in response to you saying they've spent to the cap. I'm also glad they're not being cheap now, and agree that so long as Miller stays healthy they'll play at least 86 games this season. I think Pominville will be a solid investment so long as he can find the ability to score in crucial moments, but you're right about Connolly. He's probably going to get hurt again and they'll definitely be kicking themselves.

As for the new kids, I'm most excited about Myers. I watched some of the game today and he seemed to be skating exceptionally well considering his size.

Leafs were missing tons of regulars.

Didn't you notice no Kaberle, Beauchemin or Komisarek on their D?

Yeah, take any team in the league and sit their top 3 defenseman and see how well they do. You still only won by 1 goal against a mostly AHL team with our 3rd string goalie.

Gretzky steps down as Coyotes coach

Wayne Gretzky has stepped down as head coach and director of hockey operations of a Phoenix Coyotes franchise that remains dogged by its unsettled ownership situation.

Gretzky made the announcement on his Web site Thursday.

"This was a difficult decision that I've thought long and hard about," Gretzky said in a statement posted on his site. "We all hoped there would be a resolution earlier this month to the Coyotes ownership situation, but the decision is taking longer than expected.

"Since both remaining bidders have made it clear that I don't fit into their future plans, I approached General Manger Don Maloney and suggested he begin looking for someone to replace me as coach. Don has worked hard and explored many options. I think he has made an excellent choice, and so now it's time for me to step aside."
