BTW it's being sent FED EX to GS, game arrived when I got in store at 1:00pm. Employees didn't have a clue when it would arrive before he walked in store. But every other GS store around it had it.

heh, I just put the 3 other discs in my spare Shenmue case I have lying around since it has 4 empty slots that need filling:lol

So I've played for a few hours:

Most of the load times seem to stem from stuff like loading cutscenes. For transitioning between areas and battles it's not that noticeable let alone annoying or "game-breaking" as some reviewers seem apt to point out. In regards to battles it goes something like this:

-Freaky battle transition thingie(y'know like those effects when you set off a random encounter in the FF games)
-Cuts to character who makes a random battle comment(like oh I don't know "blah blah here we go fight for justice blah blah" that sort of thing
-Camera pulls back to show party swinging weapons and looking prepared.
-Camera swings over to bring enemies into view
-Start issuing commands

I can't put down an exact number of seconds this sequence takes but believe me it isn't terrible. If you can tolerate the 900 other RPGs that do this you'll be fine. As a bonus levels come fairly quickly(at least until the area cap slaps down and you get like 1 or 2 exp a fight) and I had to do quite a bit of running in circles just to set off one random encounter.

The framerate chugs in a few areas but it's mostly while exploring, as long as it doesn't become an issue when timing ring attacks it should be fine. Otherwise graphically it looks...Eh? Eh is a good summary of it so far.

Soundtrack is of course great and what little I've played so far has been pretty keen.
For some odd reason I also got the "Three Perfects in a row" achievement even though I'm damn sure it was mostly two goods and one perfect...but hey no complaints here.

Oh and what the hell is up with RPG characters always kicking objects of interest to find items? Somebody update that RPG cliche list already.

It's not actually trolling if you don't admit it
ferricide just told me Jay Rubin translates some of the story in Lost Odyssey.

Fucking hot.

Just got my copy and will play tonight.

Yeah, Rubin did the "1000 years of dreams" sections.

I just picked up my copy from Gamestop. There were two other people there also purchasing it. They were sold out of their extra copies.

And over the course of the game, Kaim uncovers various 'dreams', or short stories, that are written by award-winning Japanese novelist Kiyoshi Shigematsu, and translated by Jay Rubin, a Harvard professor who is better known for his translations of Haruki Murakami.

ferricide is correct.

Wal-Mart in Salem NH came through and I got a copy there. I was surprised that the booklet that came with the poor packaging was actually in color. I only played the opening but so far the game looks nice and the sound is amazing.

I guess I can't resist big releases. I traded in 2 games to pick this up for 5 bucks today. Had already beat 'said' games and looking forward to extending my money I spent on them by another 40 hours. I'm also hoping if I get into this (which if it is like old school FF I will) then maybe it will motivate me to give some time to Oblivion (which criminally sits in the bottom of my drawer like a lost treasure just waiting to be discovered). Got the last copy between 2 local gamestops as well..

I just don't know when i'm going to find time to play it!!!

You guys are tempting me to buy this game. :( I haven't really enjoyed a jRPG since Shadow Hearts 2, and hearing Jay Rubin (I love Murakami) translated the stories has my interest really high.

I think I'll finally use my $25.00 dollar Toys R Us gift card...

Ok I am getting goods on the ring thing but perfects are few and far between. Any tips?
Do you realize the shrinking speed of the ring depends on how deep you press the trigger (ie. it's analog)?

practice? sry for the shitty answer but thats really what it boils down to. there is no "real" technique when it comes to timing in VGs

Wow this game is nice. That opening CG transition to battle was nice, and the soundtrack is great! Havent encountered any framerate issues yet, and the loading has been pretty standard speed. The battle entrance load times arent ANYWHERE near warranting the complaints.

However, the first disc was already loose in the case when I opened the game...no damage on any of the discs...but still.

Dude, it's by the same team who did the Shadow Hearts series, you'll most likely love it.

Yes, Is the timing differnt for differnt enemies?
Not that I know of.
Personally I'm having a lot of success (around 30% perfect, I'm sure other people do even better) by consciously avoiding using the analog-ness. That is, fully depress the trigger before the character in question has his turn, and when the time comes instantly let go of it.

I remember reading that.

Also, the art design is by the guy who does the Vagabond manga. Okay yes, I'm quite sold on LO (again).

Thats what i do too. Success rate is around 50% perfects atm , and im only 5h into the game. I really like the ring system , it's a nice touch.

"Not all Nautilus staff made the transition to Feelplus, and there are some notable losses. The real time cutscene director Toshiyuki Terada and the creator of Shadow Hearts itself Matsuzo Machida are both missing in the transition."

Also the whole designing and planning is done mostly by Mistwalker, and of course the music composition is completely different.

I think without these qualifications you give a very wrong impression of the game, as it's completely different from (especially the later 2) Shadow Hearts games. A lot more serious, and a lot more traditional in terms of gameplay.

Huh?? That's the free Japanese DLC as well. Are you sure it's the Weapon Guard 2 skill bracelet?

It is.
"Masters Secret Script: Weapon Guard 2 Enhancement

Also lol at the first part of the game. For once they actually make fun of JRPG heroes lack of sensible armor when going into a fight. That was a cool touch, especially coming from an old school style JRPG.

So, looks like I'm finally at something I always hate in a RPG. The time-attack event.
Disc 4, you have to fight 4 boss "at once" and prevent all of them to reach the city
I love turn-based games because I can take all the time I want. I hate being rushed in a game, any type of game, and this is really annoying me. I failed once and just went back to the previous savegame to do some more side stuff. Hate hate hate.

I just finished 45 minutes of playing, so far I like it. It is a very "safe" game. The gameplay, battle gui, menu gui is all straight from Sakaguchi's Final Fantasy games. It doesn't bother me since I already like it obviously. :D

Use sleep on the three you aren't fighting and then flee the battle. If one of them wakes and gets closer to the city, sleep the one you're fighting and attack the closer one. I beat that one on my first go, but damn... it was exhausting. Remember that the elements of each Arthrosaurus are different.

Hope that helps!

Yeah I got how to do it after I failed, but I simply couldn't get myself to try again. I just hate this type of event.
Thanks anyway :)

Just equip everyone with the anti-paralyzation skill and it's easily doable. But that's the only point in the game where I went Game Over so far (now at disc 3 ~middle I guess), so don't worry.

This was one of the hardest fights in the game in my opinion. I failed twice before finally getting it right. The hardest fight for me was by far
the fight with the general of Numara and the three tanks where he does the charge attack that pretty much annhilates your entire party.
I must have died close to 10 times before I beat that one.

The one outside of Grand Staff? Grind for Anti-Paralysis (from the Yellow Band). It makes all the difference. Have an immortal equip the skill, and Jansen equip the band.

Since I have this game preordered at walmart.com won't ship until next week. I DID get Gears in the mail which NOW i want to return at the store and just go buy LO and when the other comes out I'll return it at the store and just by Gears or some other game :lol

Yeah, that's what I'm going to do.

For those that got it today and played, how's the loading?

Nothing to be concerned about. It's absurd to think people have an issue with the load times.

Oh okay. I won't have a problem with it then. I just can't tell. I must have been turned off when I heard about it the first time. but at this point I need a JRPG :lol

I have been saying "it's not that bad" in various threads more often than I can remember for around a week now, but it's not absurd to have an issue with them. If you played recent games (like Eternal Sonata or Xenosaga 3) with instant battle start it's slightly annoying to go back to 10 second pans -- especially in a game with random battles.

I f'ing pre-order from Gamestop but because I have a job and can't pick the game up until 5:20 they didn't have any more of the pre-order quest/item things. What bullshit. Who can I call to piss and moan about their not getting enough?

Incidently, I don't suppose there is just one generic code that everyone can use for the bonus is there?
