Are there any permanently missable flashback stories?

I don't think so. In fact, I just checked a Japanese guide, and it doesn't look like there are any disc-specific memories (other than some on the final disc, that is).

Can someone tell me the location of the bonus dream? I read in the download screen that it was in Uhra, but I've only managed to find the non-bonus scenes there.

EDIT: Nevermind, I seem to have stumbled upon it in the Tavern. It seems like it's unlocked after you get the other 3 bar stories.

So like, did they drop the ball on this game? When Walmart is sold out of copies, then you know the game is undershipped.

Yeah, seriously. I've gone to a few places looking for it, but they have all been sold out. This is the first time I've had trouble finding a game on release.

When I opened up my copy the first disc was loose...had some minor smudges on it but nothing more. I'm really, really, really disappointed with MS on this one.

Does it make sense to try and get a 360 for this game? I've been waiting for the first pseudo-FF of next gen, and it looks like its shown up in the most unlikely of places... Xbox.

Agreed, the loading isn't any worse then any other game I've ever played. I've had no problems so far with it.

I agree. I'm glad I didn't let the over hyped load times talk me out of this game. They are RPG load times, no more no less.

I just beat the first boss, died twice trying. I am really liking this game. I'm not finding it slow at all and I have enjoyed the first handful of dreams. The upstream one is pretty cool. Everyone has said it only gets better the further you progress and if that is the case, I am really looking forward to pressing on.

Not if this is absolutely the only game you are interested in getting now and in the future.

It's a great game, but not worth the $400 ~ $500 it would cost you to get everything.

This is what I wanted Final Fantasy VII to be when I was a kid, I could really give a shit less about load times or old school combat. =/ I'm really, really happy with it thus far.

I've been playing this game for 2 hours now and it really brings back the fond memories of the experience of playing ff7-ff9 on the psone. Its as big budget, lavish, and spectacle driven as you'd hope, and the intro 40 minutes are done beautifully, the way the game sometimes morphs real time with cg, and the game always feels smooth in transitioning from place to place.

The music is fantastic, the graphics are beautiful. To those like myself that know the work involved in bringing game art to life, a game like this with shitloads of assets delivered at a quick pace really makes your jaw drop.

The loading is somewhat frequent, but not the 20 second bullshit all the review sites are saying, i think they got defective copies.

The first dream was more touching than i expected, and they do a lot with text effects, visual effects, and change the screen and music every now and then to make them feel unique and interesting to read.

The battle system is clean and well done. Graphics are great, the ring system is fine. Menus remind me a lot of ff8, and load rather quickly and feel easy to navigate.

Overall Im really hoping gamers buy the game and show all the people that obviously put a lot of hjard work into it that these kinds of traditional epic games are worth doing if they are done right. Problem with so many jrpgs and why i dont like them is not only are they traditional but they feel lacking in some parts, or just feel composed of a lot of filler content to extend the game time. cough xenosaga cough

So yeah i mean if you guys want another final fantasy like from the psone days youd be stupid not to get this.

Oh yeah it looks awesome on the HDTV

Just as I've been telling people,

FF VII setting (materia, magic-industry, etc)
FF VIII interface
FF X environment design(ish)

And Sed/Cid is win. :D

Okay, I've got a few questions about the skill system.

I like to make my characters all unique, with various abilities. However, because the Immortals don't have their own skills, does this mean I'm going to have to make my Immortals carbon copies of my Mortals?

Jansen has the Steal skill, but I want Seth to be my Thief...how can I spice up my party line up without making my guys carbon copies of each other?

It really opens up once you get more people in your party. There are enough battles for both Kaim and Seth to learn all of Jansen's original six skills, but once you get the kids it branches out and you have to make decisions that govern the direction of your characters.

I'm really enjoying this game.

Characters are the highlight for me thus far, next to the really good battle system, skill, and formation systems.

Thousand Year Dreams are fucking beautiful.

This is a sound off to all game reviewers: suck my black balls.

I agree with you 100%. I really really adore the Thousand Year Dream parts especially. Talk about being charged with emotion... They're just so damn compelling. You can bitch about how they are not interactive and "not using the medium to its full potential," but the reality is it is just another tool in the giant toolbox of videogames. Hell, one that hasn't even been used to this extent before (do correct me if I am wrong)!

At the risk of sounding pretentious, I think they liken to the combination of poem and painting that occurs in Chinese and Japanese art:
K5_40L.jpg

Here it is a combination of visual imagery, audio, and text to tell great little stories. It feels really fresh and helps flesh out Kaim in a pretty imaginative way. <3

So I just got this game and the reserve thing because people keep stating its like FFVII... I'm going to kill folks if they were lying.

Still waiting to get mine, pre-ordered from GS, but it didn't come in today. Guy said they were only getting like 8 copies. It was funny, while I was there two other guys came in looking for the game, dunno if they pre-ordered, but if not they might not be able to get a copy. Crazy, I figure with the amount of advertising MS is doing on this game they would have shipped more copies. I'm in Miami, BTW.

Still cheesed that I have to wait until tomorrow, still it got me to buy Rez, and thus gave myself an evening of pure awesome!

It's okay though. I have to wait for it to ship next week which is a real bummer. ;(

I was prepared for an epic, beautiful RPG, but I really can't describe what I am feeling right now after playing for just a couple hours. It is so goddamn gorgeous, the music is so neat, and just fighting my first few real battles with my party with Uematsu's music playing, I am really in awe. I hope traditional JRPGs never die.

It can't be said enough, the "Thousand Years of Dreams" sequences are superbly written. Two in particular are actually quite sad
The one about Kaim's family dying in the Earthquake, and the one about the Storyteller (Bonus).

Now that I've finally had a chance to dig into the battle system it really feels like this is exactly what we would have gotten had Sakaguchi had a chance to helm another FF. The immortals/mortals dynamic is actually quite cool, though I'm not sure I'll have the patience to have all characters learn all skills for the achievements.

Reviews really seem a little low to me now after playing, and the load times are really a non-issue.

Also, which review had the complaint about the lack of a cohesive theme song. That opening track is EVERYWHERE in the game and it's fantastic.

Because half of the reviews aren't even coherent, and are riddled with glaring inaccuracies and sillyness across the board. Unless there's a point where the game engine breaks down into a jalopy, there is no issue with loading so far for me whatsoever, if the retail copy is the same as the review copies, then there are some serious whiny bitches out there.

And yeah, the comment about no theme song is just stupid, flat out stupid. Games with Uematsu songs in them tend to always have an underlying main theme used as a base for several songs, be it Terra's Theme, Melodies of Life, Recollection, etc. Lost Odyssey makes liberal use of it's gorgeous main theme.

wowowowowowowowow

Played to the second save point. Good grief this game screams next-gen RPG. Really digging everything about. UE3 looks kick ass.

If you're on the fence, then I really recommend checking it out. Leagues more interesting than Blue Dragon.

Sucks I can't play more tonight...gotta study for my Finance class.

The first real boss is an absolute bitch. He keeps hitting my crew with the multi-attack to start and that just sets me way back.

well The game lost me.. after the opening fight you do not really do anything for 2 hours. :(

You run around, open treasure chests, sleep in an inn, learn about the world you are in, its history and the current state of things, you meet two party members, and you get your first mission. Sure there aren't any battles, but you are definitely *doing* stuff.

The mortals finish learning their final skills at level 52. If you use them all throughout the game, they should be in their mid to high-40s by the time you are able to go to the last dungeon, so you shouldn't have any trouble getting the achievements.

BTW, you can really tell this game is made by the Final Fantasy guys. From the character designs to the world to the music. It's basically FF12.5

I can't believe someone would say that the Dreams don't add to the game, or are a misuse of the medium. They're so well presented with the imagery and music and reveals. They're so gorgeous that I'm not even sure I'd want them acted out in any way, it's nice just to be able to read them and slowly absorb it. Fantastic writing.

Of course, I think the idea of misusing a medium altogether is a silly accusation to lay on just about anything. Gaining new tools doesn't involve the discarding of others entirely.

same here...it's pissing me off and not liking the game anymore. I wonder if mosts of the ppl that are pimping the game in this thread even got to that part. Hell he's taking almosts half my HP with his hits.

Well do you have analyze skills to learn it's weakness? I'm not there yet, but I assume after learning its weakness, its only a matter of staying alive with the guard bar system and using elemental weaknesses/strong attacks to the best of your ability. I know they wouldnt throw some kinda "gimmick" battle at people this early on (other than the first tank battle in the opening where you have to go left right alternating).

For the first boss, make sure all your characters have reached the level cap for that location. It makes a world of difference to have the right level.
Personally I got lucky and killed it on my first try. Second boss was a very different story :D

Go back to town and get the poison resistance bracelet from Colen. Hit the boss with nothing but fire bombs and fire spells/attacks.

As long as I don't think I'm playing a clone of FFVIII, then I'll be fine with LO. God, I hated FVIII with a passion. FFVII was fine. FFIX was awesome. FFX was awesome. FFX-2 sucked hardcore donkey, FFXII was awesome.

"The Music of Lost Odyssey"
"When I write for a sequel, I have some idea what kind of music would match the game but I don't for a brand new IP so I cannot help wondering how well the music will be received by players," says Uematsu, looking back at some of the difficulties of the project. That said, however, this one may be one for the books. "I personally love all music in Lost Odyssey more than any other works I have ever done. There are many songs I would like to pick for concerts in the future. I am especially confident about the music for the last battle. You cannot miss it!"

I really don't think it feels much like VII or VIII (which for me, is good), more like if FFVII occured after VI more naturally, or if Sakaguchi went on to make a more progressive game after his teams work on IX.
