As much as I'd love to agree with that, no. GamesRadar (6), Gamepro (3.25/5), and G4 (3/5) say otherwise.

Even with those 3/5 and 6 review the 2.5 review= 50% and without that review the game would be in the lower 80's percent. Then again from reading most reviews thats giving it lower scores they are critiquing the game for being what it is an old school jrpg and not offering much new which suits me just fine i just want a good ole fashion jrpg.

Isn't there a website out there where you can purchase replacement cases for all the consoles? Does it include all the styles of cases?

JRPG reviews are, on avergae, quite retarded in the mainstream Western press, at least since the turn of the century. There's not much really confusing about it, this is the norm: it will never make sense. Some of the best RPG's get utterly reamed for reasons that share NO consistency or sense with anything else. The 1up review is one of the best written LO reviews at the moment, and it spends half it's time name dropping Final Fantasy and bitching about kids not being hookers or some such fare.

LO also doesn't have the psychotic fanbase FF has that will eat the reviewers alive if they speak ill against it, so that's that.

I haven't even played the damn thing, so I'm not going to get TOO apologetic for it, because I'll be on it's ass too if it disappoints.

Getting the most out of Lost Odyssey will require a bit of patience, even from those used to the slower pace of the genre. However, the gameplay subtleties and character-driven narrative are rewarding enough to make it worth the occasional frustration. No, the game breaks no new ground, and it suffers from some inexcusable technical glitches. But if you stick with it, you'll find a compelling emotional drama, delicate adjustments to an age-old formula, and a unique and balanced skill-development system. Kaim's journey is a memorable one, and if you like turn-based RPGs, you'll want to experience it for yourself.
I found nothing wrong with this review. RPG fans (me included) just want everyone reviewer to think like us more then any other genre. Not that it matters because we eat any shit up anyway.

I really rarely read reviews anymore, especially not for purchasing advice so I shouldn't run my big mouth so much, but I like I said, I really have a hard time swallowing diatribes about technical flaws and flawed gameplay elements from a guy who 9.0'd No More Heroes, a game that is such an amazing technical disaster with so many utterly horrific gameplay portions, CORE ONES, that it's ridiculous. The game lives solely on it's main mission sword fighting and unique style.

If LO has anywhere near the problems, even just technically, that NMH has, I will mail Sakaguchi a dead fish filled with rotten mayo.

My main issue tends to be the double standards and/or ignorance in the reviews, I'm not even going into taste issues, if you can get the shit right, not give a free pass to franchise nonsense, then you can hate whatever. Fallacy and stupidity are the problems. I'm aware that the genre is becoming more limited than it was, and it's boom is over in the west, but come on.

Yeah, every single person with scratched discs stemming from MS's poor business decisions is pathetic.

Not to mention the 6.0 for Blue Dragon and 8.5 for Eternal Sonata. I can't quite wrap my head around that one.

Blue Dragon got 6's for the same reasons Dragon Quest VIII got 9's pretty much all around, the reviews for it were mind bending. Not that I want to bitch about exposure for Dragon Quest, as it's my childhood sweetheart of a game series. (Although the omission of a class system still makes VIII a trip backwards~)

yah. they sunk that low...

but my god the game is full o awesomizzles
FUCK YOU MICROSOFT, FUCK YOU AND ALL YOUR BULLSHIT!
This is the last shit I am going to let slide.

I have had to put with bullshit like this:
Two of my premiun 360's red ringed, each one at a 60$ replacement cost from Best Buy.
My fucking ELITE (which I got on day fucking one) red ringed after 1 month.
I have about a dozen Arcade games that I cannot play due to the fucking red rings.
I got a Halo 3 CE which came scratched.

AND EVEN THEN YOU CANNOT GIVE ME A DECENT CASE? I wish the PS3 had games I want to play, I would switch consoles in a hearth beat. MS better prays that their exclusive release lineup keeps gamers excited this year because they are a total fucking failure in every other department.

edit: Just ordered one of those cases in Amazon. $9 with S&H. Fuck You Microsoft!

so anymore impressions about supposed improved loading???
Loadings are the same for all versions. At least they were the same when comparing the preview build and both Japanese and Asian retail copies.
But it's entirely possible that GI's debug console has a busted drive though. Jollipop's video on youtube for example had a 26 seconds load time on a cutscene that took 12 on my own 360.
The loadings in LO most definitely are there, but so far the only moment I really found them annoying was when going from the world/ocean map to the inside of the ship.

Just get the Asia one, its region free for PAL gamers, 10€ cheaper and has THE BOX!

Burns: "Okay, now it's time for your bribe. You can take the washer and dryer set where the lovely Smithers is standing...or, you can trade it all for what's in the box."

Nuclear plant inspector: "The box...the box!!"

If they can read this then they qualify for the Asian one (I did for example :D ;) )

yup, sure, i can understand English fine, but i'm a bit more confortable reading in my language. don't mind paying 10€ more for reading it in my language rather than buying the asia version, it'll still be 25€ cheaper than buying it in a store here :lol , i'm a bit tired playing nearly every PSP j-rpg in English, that's enough for me :lol

Now I'm even happier with my purchase of the Asian version. It's the choice for all Europeans, unless they're really attached to their native language. (In terms of price even after the PAL version finally comes out)

Also, while I think LO is a solid 8/10 game (I'm 26 hours in now and quite a bit into the third disc), people complaining about inherent reviewer bias against 360 JRPGs in the same breath as pointing out that the reviewer in question gave ES a 8.5 crack me up.

Mine is delayed due to adverse weather conditions... I think Im just gonna go buy it at Wal-Mart. LO +2 copies for NPD.

Why is the packaging such a big deal if the game works fine? What an odd thing to freak out about. This doesn't even affect how you collectors display the thing? The indignant rage is completely lost on me.

I am however stoked for the game. I was so damn close to taking the day off and trying to plow through the first disc of this today. Now I'll have to wait 8 damn hours...

I May just go to the store and pick this up. whenever it ships the game next week I'll return it to the store [got it from walmart] but they aren't giving me back my shipping fee :lol but whatever. I may wait to hear some impressions of any improvements on the US Version

Sucks the packaging is a huge letdown.

On that note, does anyone have the strategy guide? Is it any good? I like buying them for big rpg's even though I don't use them the first time through.

This thread makes me want to play FFXII and Blue Dragon.

That Shadow-Hearts-like battle input timing is a huge chore once you start grinding.

You don't need to grind in LO. (In fact, you don't need to grind in most JRPGs released in the last 5 or more years)

Anyone with the strategy guide; what's the recommended level and set-up for defeating
Persona
on D4? I know it
alternates absorbtion between magic and physical attacks, but I keep getting wiped out by it casting Death, Shadowus and Shinus on my party.
In fact, does anyone have info on how to beat all the
achievement-related bosses?

Really dissapointed about the case but fuck the system. Bought me a five pack of four disc see-through dvd cases for like 10 bucks. Screw Microsoft and their shitty american packaging.

In other regards, I'll be getting the strat guide today :) Still really look forward to the game.

John Harker

Definitely doesn't make things up as he goes along.
Can we please stop talking about what doesn't matter and talk about WHAT DOES?
(and isn't there a separate thread for packaging anyway? Which I still don't get, are you the kind of people that on Christmas morning, carefully and intimately unwrap the gifts, toss the toys aside, and coddle the ribbon and wrapping paper? i dun get it)

Like uh, I don't have the game yet and I want it, can the people who own THE GAME actually talk about the contents of some game? I don't care about a box that collects dust on a shelf, tell me if the content is worth $60 :lol

I am disappointed in the NA packaging. I was so on the fence about this one that that little bit of disappointment has caused me to just wait on picking it up. No, it's not a big deal, but between the load times, backlog, and general glitchiness shown in the gametrailers review.. yeah, this will have to wait.

Seems very good. I'm not looking too ahead. It's by Casey Loe, who did the BD strategy guide...which I thought was good. It's 272 pages.

When I pay $60 for a thing, presentation is important to me.

When I go to an expensive restaurant, I don't expectthem to just slop food onto my plate.

I'm really enjoying it thus far. I'm not normally a huge JRPG guy but I had a hankering to play one and this is doing nicely.

My major bullet points at the moment:

+ Voice Acting
+ Story (Dream of a Thousand Years)
+ Ring forging and skill linking
+ Character design, environments

- Yet another emo main character
- Not much to equipment, no armor
- Fixed save points
- Random battles

? The loading time gripes are overblown
? Combat is solid but nothing new other than the rings mechanic

In the grand scheme of things, the good vastly outweighs the few gripes I have at this point. This is definitely what I'd been looking for.

Thanks for the info - I may as well pick it up today since it's 30% off the day you get the game at GS (with Edge card...ugh yes i have one lol). I liked the BD strat guide as well, nice layout, nice looking etc etc

Then you have a fairly easy option, don't go back. Since you know this is how it is presented, don't purchase the game. Problem solved.

well then I agree. The packaging sucks. 7 pages worth of bitching? Only if it causes scratching...which we don't know yet.
