Ok, I'm just a few hours in, and not got a very long way into Lost Odyssey yet, but I am certainly enjoying it so far, the skill link system is quite cool, as are the battle rings.
What has me most impressed so far though, is the music and the writing. especially in the dream interludes, I was half expecting an ok at best Japanese to English translation but have been blown away by the writing, the first one I seen At the inn in Uhra was highly emotionally charged in my opinion, and it certainly draws you in.
So far so good then, the frame rate suffers a bit at times, but isn't terrible, loading isn't too bad either, and the battles have loaded in good time too, and the battle theme is awesome, certainly a good game to get stuck into during the Easter break.
Edit: Ok, I'm a UK'er but there isn't an active PAL based thread for LO, sorry
I started 4th disc some days ago but as it opens so much and is packed with sidequest i think i´m gonna put it on hold for a few days and try to finish Devil May Cry (the first one).
btw, i am really disappointed by the extra areas because:
1- they are too easy (bosses HP are what? 9000? wtf were they thinking?)
2- too short, areas are like...point A to B except for the temple of enlightenment
3- need voice casting
i have yet to go to inside the temple of enlightenment and i know it's harder there (normal enemies give me some trouble and their HP is big) but they should have given it a different look than the ancient ruin, really lazy there. (i know they are both part of the eastern tribe ruins but still)
also, this game has the best looking enemies/bosses in any next gen game ever, really glad they went with UE3 for this alone.
and one last thing, what's up with the total lack of support from MS/mistwalker? where are the dlc? i'd love to have hard mode like BD, seriously.
On disc 3, on the ice path area, there's this monster that steals items from me. I don't know how to stop it, but it keeps taking good accessories. How do I get it back?

Isn't it a monkey? W/e... on the first "room" of that map, there are a bunch of monkeys gathered on the right side of the screen. Battle their boss and get everything back.
In a random fight, if you battle them, kill them first at all costs. Will save you a few hassles.

Is it just me or does it move really fast on disc 4. I mean not just sidequests but I keep finding myself thrown into battles slightly unprepared. Also how many of the wooden box things does Tolten have to touch to

I stumbled onto that temple by accident, and had no intention of grinding. But I got stuck inside, and since I hadn't saved outside of it I didn't have much choice but to continue. Heh, took me several hours to clear the dungeon. Went in at lvl 43 or so, came out over 40 levels higher.
This was mostly thanks to the Hellish Kelolons (automatic lvl up when you defeat them)
. After that there wasn't a single encounter that gave me problems. I'd even go as far to say it made the game a bit boring being so incredibly overpowered.

as a North American Lost Odyssey owner, I certainly don't mind . I were living in Europe (I have relatives living there, and my mom lived there for awhile), I would probably post in this thread if I wanted to state an opinion about LO, too.
Yeah, was trying to not know too much about it thats why I just asked the number of them. Also I noticed that they showed a lot of stuff way into this game quite early on. I mean i'm glad I stayed away from a lot of the media, they showed stuff that happens well into disc 3 I think.
Bolded part isnt a bad thing. And the music kicks the crap out of most recent RPGs.
Also WTF at my 360 spazzing out about the disc not being able to be read (on Disc 4, rounding up side quests). I swear if the music stops one more time...im going to break something. Actually I take that back, if I get a disc read error in
The Temple of Enlightenment
or the music stops during the last boss fight, THEN i'll break something.
Get the orichalum from Temple of Enlightenment, take it to the blacksmith hanging out on the mining side of Ipsilon and have him make you a sword. It's nowhere near as powerful as the age of kings sword but you don't need the royal equipment skill to use it.
This thing happens a lot when my network is bad or the live is getting hammered. It seems every time the game checks the saves, it checks the live as well. If I turn off my network before starting the game, this kind of issue won't happen any more.

Hey all, I was wondering if this was a decently noob friendly game for those who don't play too many turn based RPG's. The last one I tried to play was Final Fantasy VIII, so it's been a while. Speaking of which, does this game have a horribly slow start like FFVIII? That was just too much to bare, and I'd hate to get a practically brand new game just to be faced with mind numbing beginning. Thanks in advance!
Yay i've beaten Lost Odyessey, and i've gotta say I really liked the last boss battle. That theme is really nice too, so thats two insane final boss theme's Uematsu has done for Mistwalker. Keep em coming with Cry On.
Also nice on the FFIV esque "Lets help everyone!" by the mortals. Wish his final form matched something like Zeromus or Neo Exdeath though... true final form bosses still just aint what they used to be.
I know it's a little late for impressions but I'm 11 hours in so far and this game is really great. Anyone that calls themselves a Final Fantasy fan should not skip on Lost Odyssey at all.
The game has an awesome soundtrack; the theme is also one of my favorite Uematsu tracks...It's also got great English Voice acting (probably one of the best I've heard in a JRPG).
Also, the "1000 years of Dreams" stories are some of the best written work I've read (in any medium) and I'm glad they provided an excellent translation for it...The music that plays along the stories is fantastic, it's hard not to feel emotional when reading them...The last one I read was about the "Alex, Myna, Kaim" story and it was simply...wow!! I can't believe what I'm reading is from a game.
The gameplay is solid, the skill set, ring assembly systems and the challenging opponents make this one of the better turn-based games I've played...Random battles may seem archaic but it doesn't really bother me and while the framerate is inconsistent, it's hardly an annoyance. From what I've played so far, Lost Odyssey seems underappreciated and its kinda unfair to downplay its traditional form considering we all knew that that's exactly what it was going for from the very beginning.

If you liked the gameplay from Lost Odyssey, you should definitely track down Shadow Hearts: Covenant should you own a PS2. Both games are made by the same studio, but from a gameplay standpoint Covenant is much deeper.

Thanks for the advice, I've always wanted to play it but never had the chance...There're still quite a few great JRPGs I've yet to play; like Valkyrie Profile 2 and I've yet to play Persona 3.
Anyway, so far, the music I've heard from the Lost Odyssey soundtrack in the game has been great and not just the theme...If this track didn't phase you...you're not human
Okay, what is up with the lack of a "Ground" or "Earth" spell. I'm all the way up to disc 2 and the only party member that has the equivalent of an "earth" spell is
Sarah
. And she has "Grounda" at that -- not even regular "Ground."
Did I miss something? I have flare, aqua, and wind but have yet to receive "ground." Jansen doesn't have it either...
And another complaint: Uematsu composed ten unique songs for this game -- that's it. And they all loop over and over again. I swear, it's like I've listened to the this 10-track "masterpiece" repeat to the point of monotony. How come Uematsu composed ten times as many tracks for Blue Dragon? Lost Odyssey's soundtrack is getting to the point where it can be best described with the word "barren."

Both games have about the same about of tracks (~50); actually, Lost Odyssey has a little more.
I agree that the music is looped in quite a few times. Between the dream sequences, dungeons, regular sequences, and some other stuff, you'll definitely be famiilar with a lot of the tracks. However, there are quite a few that don't play as much and are equally as impressive. Personally, I found Lost Odyssey's music to be more memorable, but Blue Dragon's score was very nice too.

You have to find or buy the spells, AND have the appropriate level Black Magic to use it. You clearly missed some chests/shops or something. Try to check out shops you can visit, or when you get to Disc 3&4 you can:
Go to the City of Saman auction house to buy most of the items you missed. If you lose the auction, don't worry, the same item keeps being up for auction until you win it. Note you can only bid 3 times per item, so always wait until there is 1 second left to place bids.
I have been finishing up all the side quests and optional bosses on disk 4. I really wish they would have made them more difficult like Ruby/Emerald weapon in FFVII because I have taken them all out easily so far.
Is it really worth it to find everything and do all the optional stuff? I've done a lot in Disc4 but I'm starting to feel like I should just beat the game and trade it in while it's still worth a lot, because grinding skill links isn't exactly fun.

On disk 4 and I have a treasure mission called the Sunken Town. It says it's located at the old location of Kent, yet I can't find it on my map. How do I find this mission?
I'm a ways into disc 2, but it's pretty clear to me that I'm over 'traditional' jrpgs. The characters grate, the thousand year dreams are written well enough, but they jar horribly with the game (lol, lots of moral tales, now let's kill monsters for xp and loot
with my grandchildren on the battlefield! olol!
)
Numara ending
The entire General tank battle was just absurd. He was pretty stupid in general, they aimed for funny and failed miserably
What else can I bitch about. Oh, queen's veiny boobs are creepy, and the outfits in general are ridiculous. Kaim needs a haircut.
I'm also shocked at the length. I felt like I'd barely gone far into the game and bang, insert disc 2! The areas are also small and exploration is limited (maybe that changes later, dunno), and combined with the automap, there is little feeling of discovery to be had.
Combat is archaic, turn based battles have to be exceptional for me to enjoy, and this is not. I also appreciate how literally every status spell I've cast so far has failed, but the enemies always seem to land. Bashing with the appropriate ring/element spell still seems faster and more effective.
Consider me a dissenting opinion
It's pretty enough, the music is generally great, and the basic story concept is very solid (I still find it appealing even though I'm not enjoying its execution), but I'm not really digging the rest.
Oh, and the load times suck. Not like soul destroyingly bad, but bad enough to make the game feel kind of sluggish overall. Load a battle? Loads up quick enough, then you get to watch a sweet pan around the room you're fighting in, then you get a closeup on one of your characters, then you get your whole party, then you get the enemies. Every, single, fight. Ugh. Loading between smallish areas is also kind of annoying. It's not fatally awful, but it is crappy :/

Finished the game with 980/1000 achievements & 80+ play hours this weekend. Have totally no desire for the last 20 (Treasure Trove WTF?).
My take of this game is 7.5/10, quite above average.
Cons:
The graphics and music are fantastic. MIND BLOWING fantastic that is.
The 1000 year dream thing is touching too, but I think I'm just too old for this.
VA is really good too. Every line said by Sed made me :lol :lol
Pros:
Loading time hurts but tolerable. But the save game check thing really makes me go crazy.
The story is ... OK I guess? I can understand about half of it but the ending is just "not there".
Although the graphics of LO is pretty impressive, but I'd say the
wedding scene in the end
is fuckin' FUGLY!! Ming is still hot and Jansen is somewhat "normal" but
WTF with the crowds? 2D sprite with like 3-frame clapping animations?
How about a CGI next time?
Anyway, my recommend is that if you're into JRPGs then LO definitely worths it. If not but still you wanna experience some cool graphics & musics & ok-story, then rent it.

Do you think you might know where the "ground" spell is located? I'm willing to go back wherever I need to to get it.
I've just hit the 50 hour mark doing sidequests, getting my achievements and pretty much just levelling everyone up. I am in the Temple of Enlightenment now but the recycling of assets has kidna put me off wanting to explore it.
I also got Divide and Leveller. Can anyone explain what these spells do? Divide seems notably weaker than Leveller. Using these spells also made me realise (through the long casting sequences) that there are no Summons in this game - were there in Blue Dragon? I miss my summons =( (I'm playing through FFIX at the moment too and with two summoners it's a big change =P)
Okay, so I finally hit Disc4 (33hours) last night and am about to enter Ancient Ruins....
For some reason, my initial enamour with LO has dwindled quite a bit. I felt it happend with Disc3, which most on this thread seem to praise....I actually found it the least interesting thus far with Disc1 still being the most.
At this point, I'm hoping the open-ended nature of Disc4 will rekindle some spark with LO, cause at this point, I kinda just wanna finish it =(
....and yes, I'm very much seeing what other critics here on GAF are saying about the story and where it's going. Also, is it just me, or has the dialog in particular, gotten noticeably weaker as the game has progressed....actually quite generic really =/

I really liked this game, but I couldn't help but laugh at what I thought was going to be the last dungeon and boss turn into a 5 hour ordeal. Seriously, I thought I was watching an episode of Tom and Jerry
We have Gongora finally! Oh wait, he split the saucer section of Enterprise and is running, chase him, We have Gongora finally! Oh wait, he lays us out flat like hes been doing the entire game even though we are at the end and I shouldn't go down this easy to make it believable for me to beat him. Crap, hes running again. After him yet again.
