Kaim, Seth, Ming, Sarah, and Jensen because magic pwns everything in the game.

I finally beat this over the weekend and spent 65 and half hours on it. I spent the last 15 hours just level grinding for abilities and such and ended up beating the game with my characters at lvl 72 for the immortals and lvl 56 for the mortals. I was going to try and get all of the achievements but got over the idea because I want to dump all of my free time into P3: FES which is released this week. Lost Odyssey is a great game though and the best JRPG this gen.

I gotta say, some of these dreams are so moving. It's amazing because it's just text and music with changing backgrounds.

Wow, getting the bonus star for beating the
ringmaster and his dog
in the Backyard Super Heavy Class was extremely tough! Time to finish these last few Backyard battles, then hunt the world over for the 7 or so seeds I'm missing. I didn't get the Treasure Trove achievement and there's no way I'm going back combing through the game to try and get it!

question

...the rest of Disc4 ...do you have a choice on who you'll have in your party until the end? ....I really don't feel like leveling up Mack, Tolten, or Cooke =/

Depends...do you mean sidequests?

Cooke and Tolten both have sidequests that require them to be active.

Also, Tolten has some badass equipment that your immortals can steal if they have the skill Royal Equipment, which I believe Tolten gets somewhere near level 50.

and you can get the spell Divide from Cooke completing the Keloton sidequest

You're not forced to use those characters in the final battle no, but you will have no other choice than to use every Immortal.

excellent then!

...and yeah, for the other poster, I wasn't gonna do anymore sidequests....I just wanna finish it

Isn't this new?

http://www.gamasutra.com/php-bin/news_index.php?story=18403

Microsoft has announced the first DLC for its Mistwalker developed Xbox 360 exclusive RPG Lost Odyssey, adding a new dream sequence and two new items for the game, now available for download from Xbox Live.

The so called 'Triple Bonus Pack' adds a new 'dream sequence' background story entitled The Shattered Beyond, a new 'memory lamp' item that will allow players to view previously seen dreams, and a new item, the Battle Ring, which was "introduced to specialize in fighting against magic powered weapons."

New dream makes this very tempting. Is this the same one as the preorder DLC? Wasn't that one supposed to become available to everyone eventually?

I just finished. 60 plus hours and 800 points later, it was a great game. Lots of problems, lots of shit I could bitch about, but overall it was a fantastic little adventure. I hope other RPG fans give it a shot, because it is up there with the better JRPG's I have played over the years.

Well I guess the name pretty much fits it.

Yesterday i finished the Temple of Enlightment and pretty much was a piece of cake having my party around level 49 but it was a nice setting (only problem again was missing more savepoints, not for being too difficult but because in case you cant play a long session you are screwed).

I enjoyed the way they made it a big puzzle and loved the end boss and normal enemies even if it was easy (because of leveling too much before).

And the game does look beautiful sometimes and there are some really nice designs, the scenery (even if sparse sometimes) and specially lots of the enemies.

I paid a visit to the Numara Atolm and learned about the Holy Beast,
Ming says she can wake it up with her harp and i suppose i need to get back to the Numaran castle for it or something cos i couldnt call it

Just so you know: the harp is inside the White Boa, not Ming's castle.

Oh, I just realized that you can already download the preorder DLC if you have a Japanese silver account. Just get on the Japanese marketplace and get the free DLC one.

I know I'm a tool, and I don't usually invest in DLC (except for co-op/ace of aces maps in AC6, for which I'm even a greater tool ;_;), but I went ahead and bought the 200pt DLC. I absolutely love the dreams/stories, and said before I'd be willing to support more dreams coming out as DLC. I don't really care about the other items (cutscene viewer is nice, I guess, but I wouldn't have bought it), so I guess I spent 2-3 bucks on one dream. Sounds expensive for one item, but on the other hand, 2-3 bucks is nothing. I don't really care about the recently released DLC in Japan either (that extra dungeon). Just release more dreams and I'll consider supporting them!

I think i met it yesterday nearby in the middle of the ocean while surfing with the nautilus. I´ll check it out later, thanks for the tip.

Defeated Gongora at 54 hours, 800/1000, Immortals lvl 65.

I feel I've completed enough of the game to be satisfied.

No question, my favorite part of the gameplay was the skill linking/ring battle system. Even when I was capped from an EXP point of view, there was always SP to grind. I liked the fact that you were limited with the skills you could apply, even though my immortals finished with 18-19 slots each.

I did find however that after lvl 55 or so the game started to get a bit broken. My characters could absorb virtually all elements, most status ailments could not touch me (except Curse) and most enemies outside of ToE were well below my level.

Normally I'm not a big sidequest guy, but I think that's mostly because I fucking detest fetch quests. Luckily there are a lot of cool boss-orientated side quests to finish up on disc four. I found the sidequests to be my favorite part of the game story wise.

The main story is a little silly, and a bit disjointed at times (particularly on the first two discs) but it's not bad by any means and probably par for the course for a JRPG.

The visuals were fucking outstanding. Not from a technical view (which they were very good), but more from a "here's a flashy, colorful, new gen JRPG" point of view. Several scenes has me sitting there in awe.
Jansen and Ming on the White Boa was one, the Crimson Forset was another

The sound effects were all top notch, particular the enemies sound effects. Most baddies had unique sounds during battle that you can tell some though went into. I can't comment much on the music...TBH, it sort of sat in the background and set the mood but I was never really blown away.

All in all, I would call it a must play. Absolutely worth every penny. When/if the extra dungeon DLC gets launched in the States, I will take a long look at stepping back into the game for a short while.

Congrats Mistwalker.

If you have a PS2: try Shadow Hearts: Covenant. Made by basically the same developers and the ring system is much more thorough in Covenant.

I had mistaken the white boa with the slantnose. Anyway, i got it and beat the Holy Beast in 2 tries (first one when it was almost beaten it casted a "forgiveness" or similar name spell that put 9999 into every one and so defeated all my party members).

Anyway, is nice being able now to travel with the white boa and flight with the nautilus.

I just passed that cutscene and it was a nice one , it was well put together even if a bit goofy.

I´m 75 hours already (i´m really slow playing) and still about 550/1000. I´m still missing like:
- 4-5 seeds yet ( hope they are in the final locations)
- 5-6 dreams
- some spells
- some royal seals
- like half of the treasures.

And btw, i havent been able to craft 3rd level rings. I´m missing some specific and hard to get 2nd level ones and some ingredientes.

John Harker

Definitely doesn't make things up as he goes along.
FINALLY BEAT IT.

Damn, the end-game was a fucking chore.
Seriously, that has to be the worst trek to an end I've seen in an RPG in forever.
One of my favorite parts of the games were the short dungeons, and wtf, it takes like 6 hours to beat the game once you get to the first (of three, mind you) "no turning back" parts? Yikes, that wasn't fun.

Anyway, was there any additional ending after the credits?
I accidently pressed start...
Did I miss any scenes

Start with the first Shadow Hearts otherwise you'd be doing yourself a great disservice in regards to the series' story.

I just got this on the weekend and have put about 14 hours in (just did the
funeral for Kaim's daughter
). Having not played FF since FFX and its frickin' annoying characters, I'm having a great time with LO.

It really is a great RPG in all respects, and almost every area I've visited looks amazing but, for some bizarre reason, it's been a major struggle to keep my interest after disc 3.

Maybe I just need a break for a few weeks and then return to it after some GTA.

I've been on disc 4 for a long time now, all I've been doing is going around doing sidequests, leveling up my characters and getting all the dreams...I think I have around 7 left to get plus the one which I've downloaded from the XBL Marketplace. Man, these dream stories are just amazing...

The last 2 I read were about the poisoned ice-crystal candies (upsetting but very, very smart) and the one about the waterfall cleansing pilgrimage (loved the last line told by the man)...Seriously, awesome writing...Also, I can't stress enough how well Uematsu nailed the soundtrack...The more I listen to the tracks, the more I'm impressed...Every piece, every subtle tone, fits the respective atmosphere...Good stuff: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b4WE6zBdxQE

After reaching 4th disc and getting access to the vehicles upgrades and all locations, I´ve been playing it only on weekends on quite long sessions, doing sidequest, getting upgrades here and there, discovering some new dreams, and never gets boring.

Specially the 2 battle tracks, they never get old and help to keep some kind of urgency/intensity in every encounter. I love those.

I almost never finish JRPGs, so I'm hoping I can see this one through to the end. I really like the characters and story thus far so maybe that will help carry it through.

By the way, do you have Condemned 2 yet?

Just beat it a little while ago. Overall, very satisfied with the game, although I almost feel like I'm chasing the dragon in terms of JRPG's now as I there hasn't been one that's really wowed me since the early PS2 days.

First the negatives:
- The load times were the most frustrating part of the game. Some would be upwards of 10-15 seconds and it really does take away from the immersion.

- The story. Well it wasn't bad by any means, but it really, really played it safe.
I thought the initial first disc was great, especially the way they played up the mystery of what happened to Lirum and the pain that Kaim was having discovering these old buried memories. Unfortunately, I do agree with the consensus that the second disc was slow, and not much happened. Disc three picked it up a little, but even still, all it felt like was the tired "chase after the bad guy" plot. I dunno, I guess I just wanted some more complexity in the plot.

- The end game dungeons. Too lengthy, too complex, and game makers need to learn that by that point in the game, you just want to hurry up and finish the game.

The positives:
+ The soundtrack. I'm really big into VG music in general, and when I first heard this soundtrack on a dry listen, I wasn't too impressed and thought Uematsu's Blue Dragon score was better (also from a dry run.) However, the more I listened to it, the more I appreciated the subtleties. Overall, I think this is one of Uematsu's stronger efforts recently. I just wish that there had been more tracks; compared to his FF soundtracks of old, this one has about 1/3-1/2 the quantity of tracks.

+ The characters. I've always subscribed to the thought that a weak plot with great characters is better then a strong plot with really weak characters (see the majority of characters in FF XII.) I dunno. For some reason I really connected with the characters in this one. Sure Kaim is playing the dark mysterious cliche with a secret past, but I thought Seth, Jansen, Sed were great, and the kids, while annoying at times also had their moments.

+ The dreams. These were really well written, and I enjoyed them immensely, which really surprised me since I thought I was gonna be annoyed by them.

Overall, I'd give it an 8.5-8.8/10. The game definitely felt like a "Best of" collection from FF, but I'm all right with that, and I find myself interested in a sequel if it ever happens.

Question regarding Crimson Forest :-

Just defeated the Cursed Spirit Boss in Crimson Forest, on my way back out now and Mack can use his Spirit Magic on certain "lifts". There is also a sort of wooden monument on one of the paths in the forest that doesn't seem to do anything? Is it of any relevance? Is it something I just return to later?

Oh lord did this game suck. Story was sooooo horrible and FUCKING SPOILERS
They basically kinda sorta killed off Seth
.

Edit - Still better than Blue Dragon, though.

Need help with a treasure hunt

i got a hint from one of Sed´s comrades in the pirates hideout, nice location btw, that theres a treasure in a secret cave near Tosca Village, i looked everywhere in the town and through the coast underwater but didnt find anything

Also, i´m missing 2 seeds and the only section left to finish is the Temple of Enlightment i think.

Another question regarding something i found flying around
there seems to be another grand staff in a hidden valley but i´m not sure if its the 3rd, as the one visited in the second disc was in the middle of the sea and got destroyed anyway

So I finally finished this the other week and overall my thoughts haven't changed:

+ Combat system is overall good to great

+ Music is mostly excellent with the main battle theme being one of the best I've heard in recent memory

+ Visuals are mostly good

+ 1000 year dreams

+ 1st Disc is excellent

....and on to the bad:

- This game is a fucking techical mess and this can be mostly attributed to the use of UE3. Everything from the loading (oh god the loading!) to the inconsistant visuals. Worst of all, this game takes about 45 or so hours to finish on average....and alot of that is due to the overall pace of the game...which is ridicuosly so, mostly due to the loading!

- It really is pretty bad when the most interesting story comes from the damn short stories. The game hits the ground running on the 1st disc and just becomes painful as the story wears on. This is mostly due to how the plot plays out and dialog being woefully generic ...jRPG drivel indeed....and the Villians, like the cats said in the ol' japanese release thread, really are some of the lamest I can ever recall...Also rather sad that certain characters, unless you actually read the short stories, are completely mishandled. In particular, Queen Ming comes off as mostly a moron throughout the game unless you read her short story

- Unbalanced sound mix in that, the actual sound effects are waay to loud and the music isn't....thing is, you turn down the "sound" option and it takes the dialog with it =/

- ...did I mention the fucking loading?

- Ridiculously inconsitant art direction....for every good design like Kaim, Sed or Uhra, you get several borderline stupid designs such as: the King of Ghotza, Numara, Kalkanus, Ming, Jansen, etc.

- I feel like such a hypocrite because I used to tell people not to hate on LO for being "traditional" ...but it really is the epitome of just generic. The highlights that stood out really for me in the end were the refined "old school" combat system, music and short stories. Sadly, after a certain point, I didn't give a shit where the main story was going, nor really about it's cast, so I stopped reading the short stories all together.....

Anyway, as you can see, I mostly disliked LO in the end and rate it somewhere around 6/10....and yes, even though I haven't finished Blue Dragon, I can honestly say I appreciate alot more
It's kinda heart breaking in a way because I was one of those ridicuosly hyped on Lost Odyssey =(

...I made a note of it in the "fuck you LO" thread

but the save system is beyond archaic and downright fusterating at times. Basically on average, you have to set aside 2 or so hours of your time, everytime you wanna make any real progress in this game....

Agreed. If there's ever going to be a Lost Odyssey 2,
I demand that the developers imagine some illogical hocus pocus to bring her back. :[

The save system really isn't as bad as some of you in this thread make it out to be. It wasn't bothersome at all during the first 3 discs, though Feelplus did plan them poorly in the final dungeons (almost every single one on disc 4). I think one of the last dungeons didn't even have one at the end of its path, so if you died against the boss you had to redo a part all over again.

I also didn't think Lost Odyssey was that bad technically. A lot of other UE3 games ran worse than this (especially the likes of Mass Effect).
