Can anyone answer me this as I have never bought anything from the stores before...

Is it possible for people to buy US things for US prices if you live in the UK? So can I buy episodes of Lost for $1.99?

Also is it just me or can you not preview the videos?!

All right, so what's the word on bringing your own content to the iPod? If it functions like past iPods, it'll need iTunes or a similar program to write the XML files needed for the OS to see your content.

It appears that you can encode and entire DVD and it will show up in iTunes just fine, ready to be dragged onto the new iPod. I'm sure that you'll still need something to write the XML that the OS reads to know that your content is there.

Well, if iTunes can see and accept the encoded file, then it should just dump it into the XML anyway.

Not directed at you:
Also, for the record: The new iPod can do Firewire.

God damn, I am so fucking pissed off that I bought a nano last month. I only bought it because I was expecting a video ipod and now this shit gets released??

I'm probably going to sell my nano to fund this. I'm going to wait a little while and see how they do.

Some questions that I must find answers to:

How is the screen compared to the PSP?

What's the battery life?

20 hours audio only. 5 hours photo slide show. 2 hours video (60GB version that is)

30GB version is a little lower on all those numbers.

Fixed.

Based on what?

http://www.apple.com/ipod/specs.html

No mention of Firewire anywhere at all.

http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APP...02OxXGww5y3/6.SLID?mco=7247AC6D&nplm=M9127G/A

Apple iPod Dock Connector to FireWire Cable

Use an extra iPod Dock Connector to FireWire Cable for charging and syncing your iPod over FireWire. Compatible with iPod models with dock connector, except iPod nano.

BTW, anyone notice that Season 1 of Lost, 25 episodes, is $34.95? Cheaper than DVD and better than buying individual episodes. Nice.

Aren't you missing out on the other features on the DVD? Making Of.. Behind the Scenes.. Commentary?

Probably true on that, and hadn't really thought about it, but MOST people do not watch those features. Of course, those buying these episodes from iTunes probably do. :)

I was going to get an iriver but Ipod video has changed my mind. i think i'm going to order a 60gig ipod video + IBook and pay 40 bucks a month. yeah am selling my soul to apple and it sucks being poor but that damn thing is a MUST HAVE

Ordered my BLACK 5th gen iPod video 60gb (with a universal dock and remote) about 4 hours ago.

WOO!

Who wants to buy my 4th gen iPod photo 60gb??? :lol

Have you actually tried this yet? I didn't see any indication of this on the iTunes 6 website. How long does it take?

Yeah, I just stuck a DVD in my laptop with iTunes open and I get no encoding option. Details?

I think encoding a dvd would require the encryption to be broken. I don't think Apple would want to get into the legalities of that. I would be surprised if iTunes allowed that kind of functionality. I could be wrong though.

Done it already.

HandBrake->mp4->iTunes

Yeah, I just stuck a DVD in my laptop with iTunes open and I get no encoding option. Details?

Apple does not, and like will never provide any mechanism for illegally ripping DVDs.

And ripping an entire DVD to mp4 takes a LONG time - especially if you do it as 2-pass encoding. Appears to be about 2.3 seconds for every actual second of video. So for the average DVD it will take HOURS to encode as H.264 mp4.

Bah.

TV SHows:

$2 an episode.

Lost season 1: 25 episodes = $50.

I could get the DVD for cheaper, get a higher resolution, and get extras.

Arrested Development Season 1: 22 episode = 44 dollars. DVD came out for 39 and now goes for around 28. With extras, and the whole higher resolution thing.

iPod is pulling a UMD here with these prices.

Ill just keep hitting Bittorrent, which should give me a higher resolution version of the TV show BEFORE it hits the iPod store....and then of course, Ill buy the DVD when that hits.

As for the music videos....

Im undecided. They already established .99 as the standard song price. Is the video worth that as well? Considering music videos have neevr actually been sold before, and are essentially advertisements for the band, I dont know.

Why yes, yes they have.

Also, we can cherry pick TV shows all day. The point you seem to be missing is that if you're such a die-hard fan of a show that you're going to be buying entire seasons, you're likely going to get the actual DVDs anyway. Casual fans, who can't justify buying an entire box for one or two of their favorite episodes of a show they won't miss when it's gone, can just buy what they like from Apple and leave it at that.

I think the value is finally there. Apple finally is pushing me over the ledge.

300 dollars a few months ago bought you 20gb with a black and white screen.

300 dollar last week bought you 20gb with a color screen.

300 dollars TODAY buys me 30gb and a video color screen.

That's a deal.

*actually is 270 being that I'm a student.

Now all I need is a new computer...looking at notebooks. Any recommendations? Looking to spend $1300

Bah still too high. DVD is way better video quality, you get to hold an actual product, you can sell it, and has extras. This video thing ain't worth the price. That being said $1 per MP3 is steep IMHO but it sells like crazy considering it has the same problems as I stated above for video.

xsarien said:
No, on DVD. In stores. REM, Weird Al, Michael Jackson, Daft Punk, and god knows how many others.

Just music videos? I know they sell "live in concert" sets, but since when can you buy music videos like the ones you see on MTV*?

*Oh right, I mean Launch. (launch.yahoo.com)

This announcement made the local news broadcasts and the BBC's broadcast, so I guess there's a built-in captive audience that's at least interested in what Apple's doing with the fifth-generation iPod. My decision is unchanged, though: no more iPods.

But every complaint I would have had about the otherwise excellent iMac G5 has been fixed here. The CPU is at a good speed, as it always was, but it finally gets a decent GPU in addition to its wireless package. And the snub at Windows MCE is not unwelcome. I won't buy one, but I feel sad for that fact.

Next to the iPod, the only other mp3 device I would be would be if this were ever made:

winamp3.gif

Yes, I spent the last 10 minutes meticulously putting that together. But hey, I love my Winamp and its layout it engraved in my brain. I don't know why AOL hasn't made one yet!

Illegally? Fuck that stupid MPAA BS logic. I bought those DVDs and I want a legitimate way to take them on the road with me as well without physically carrying the damn discs.

I have tens of gigs of 320x240 MPEG4 movies from DVD rips and captured video off of cable in my Epson 2000 that I watch when I'm on the road. I payed once for those fucking movies (via bought DVDs and my cable fees), and I don't see why I have to pay AGAIN to see them portably.

I mean, how the hell is that different than ripping the CDs I own? MS allows that, and so does Apple AFAIK.

Fucking MPAA is gonna reap what they sow with this all this pay over and over for the same damn content BS soon or later.

Black 30GB iPod will be mine as soon as my $50 credit for the Apple Store comes in (hurray class action lawsuits) :D

Goodbye 2G 10GB iPod, you will be missed.

ok, bought a couple of videos. thoughts so far.

quality is meh. not horrible, but not great. a 4 minute video is ~20mb. it is watchable (and looks great at 320x240) but blown up to full screen it doesn't look too hot. it should be noted that I've only downloaded two old videos so far (Wang Chung and Michael Jackson) so this in no way applies to all or new videos.

the other good is that in itunes it plys them like normal songs by default. the video appears in the bottom corner where the album art is. clicking on that opens up album art window. from there you can right click and pick fullscreen, etc. overall a pretty slick interface.

now the SERIOUSLY bad. you do NOT get the songs with the videos. There are no songs in my library from the purchase and they didn't transfer to my ipod.

This is the big setback (as far as I see it). I will NOT dump $1.99 for a video (again) and still have to buy the song as well.

Anyway, the whole thing is pretty clever and a great step (and buying a show for $2 is an entirely other matter) but at the same time I also don't regret my 60GB 4G purchase.

Awwww shit. Love the codecs options and I already have a shitload of files ready to go since the PSP uses pretty much the same thing. I am so tempted to get one since i'm hooked on video watching but my PSP screen has me spoiled I don't know if I could stand that screen.
Love the iTunes intergration though, arggghhhh damn you Apple!

Are you on an LCD or CRT?

CRT but quicktime by default scales the video to the desktop resolution (instead of dropping the monitor to the actual resolution)

update - really they do a great job integrating it into the itunes interface. as far as itunes goes you really do have the song and the video. I will give them kudos for that. but lack of <5G ipod support or audio only options kind of really sucks and limits their usefulness. :(

Sigh. This is why you guys are getting sued. Just because you want it doesn't mean that anyone is obligated to give you a mechanism to do what you want, especially not a company who doesn't want to get drawn into the legal quagmire that is ripping DVDs and removing CSS which is a crime - copyright circumvention is a CRIME, why the HELL can't you get it through your head that its a CRIME. Whether you agree or not is irrelevant. It is illegal, it is illegal, WHAT PART OF IT IS ILLEGAL TO SELL DECRYPTION SOFTWARE IN THE US are you unable to process!?!?

I mean, how the hell is that different than ripping the CDs I own? MS allows that, and so does Apple AFAIK.

There is nothing to circumvent to rip a CD, that means the process doesn't break any laws on the books, THAT MAKES IT LEGAL!

I really wanted an 80GB model, that would of been an instant buy, the 60GB model is damn tempting though. It's good to see some of pixar's shorts are on the iTunes store for $1.99 each, I think that's a good price for them.

The new iMac's have some significant improvements, the built in iSight, and remote are really slick, and the mighty mouse sweetens the pot.

update2 - jhymn does NOT work with itunes6. IMPORTANT! once you download songs with itunes6 you will no longer be able to use jhymn to remove the DRM. and obviously as a result you can't remove fairplay from video as well (being you have to buy video with itunes6).

and for those wondering why I would want to remove DRM from the videos, it's with the hopes that I could extract the audio only track and have an audio version of the video. still kindda sore about that. :(

The Archos video players allow you to record a DVD to the hard drive, and the file is DRM'ed so that it can't be moved off the drive. I've also used some DVD ripping software to put the actual files onto the hard drive directly as well. Apple may adopt something like that, rip the DVD to the iPod Video, and it becomes an encrypted file that can't be copied or burned.

I'm sure today's announcements are just the beginning. We ain't seen nothing yet, and Apple has probably thought about all of these things long before we did.

BTW, being slightly overlooked in all of this iPod news is the very nice upgrades that the new iMac received. Can a fullblown media edition of Mac OS X be far behind?
