Apple Computer is once again gathering the press together as it rolls out new innovations. The latest invitation-only event will be held in New York City on October 19, 2005 on the eve of PhotoPlus Expo. Apple doesn't say exactly what the press conference will be about, but the invitation sent to MacCentral asks to join them as "we unveil Apple's latest pro innovations."

Nash said:Doubt we will see any iPod announcements at this one, it's for the pro stuff:
Rumoured stuff:
Dual-core PowerMacs
HD PowerBooks
Photo Pro (new app)
13" widescreen PowerBook to replace the 12"
Airport Express AV
Hope the 13" PowerBook is true, I'd definitely get one of them as my laptop is dying.
Tedesco! said:What does that mean? I don't get it. Explain yourself Shantyman.
Phoenix said:The powerbook line is very dead right now. Extremely poor priceerformance ratio.
shantyman said:What exactly is a high deinition powerbook?
Nash said:Yeah, be interesting to see what they do to them. Whether it will just be a token speedbump (in which case they will stay dead), or if it will something more significant.
Widescreen and increased resolution across the range, with support for 720 on the 13" and 1080 on the 15" and 17".

Upgrading to the 7448 and increasing the bus speed (they are currently a bit crippled) would see quite a nice jump in performance. There's also the possiblity of built in iSight (they've patented a camera in latch thing), as well as going up to HD resolutions. The question is whether they let the PowerPC range go out with a bang, as decent updates are so long overdue now, or whether they hold off till the Intel switch.

They'd never show the intel PB's before they *were* the new powerbooks. The only thing worse than offering a minor bump is offering a minor bump and saying "Here's yet another reason to not buy!"Yeah. I would hope that they would cram a G5 or a dual core G4 or SOMETHING into them, because without that all the other features are meaningless until the move to Intel. Maybe they will announce/show the Intel powerbooks at the event but not ship them until next year or something. Portables is where the market is hot now, and Apple is in a world of hurt right now.

Expect to see minor bumps in all features across the board (screen, speed, gpu, hdd, etc.).
At this point, Apple is focusing on bumping all other features, as working on those features is not "throw away," like working to cram 2 G4's into a PB would be.
teiresias said:Are the regular sized iPods really horrid to jog or run with? That's the only reason I'm even contemplating a Nano, but paying the same amount of money for a 4Gig Nano when I could get a 30Gig regular iPod seems stupid.
CVXFREAK said:I don't think horrid describes it accurately. I'm completely foreign to the concept of any iPod skipping because it's never happened to me. I think there are bigger concerns about dropping the iPod itself since jogging sweats have loose pockets.
teiresias said:Well, I'd be getting an armband assuming there's one made available for the new sized iPods.

Deku Tree said:Why can't you get firewire through that special apple plug? Is there some important reason?
Nash said:It's the same dock connector, but like the Nano there's no firewire controller chip inside anymore. So even though you can plug a firewire lead in, you won't be able to transfer anything.
Deku Tree said:That's terrible. Is the firewire conroller chip big? That's really lame if it's just to cut costs, especially for the iPod Video. It'll take twice as long to copy a 20Gig movie onto my iPod using USB2.0 over firewire...
