Official Sony E3 2005 press conference thread

Actually it depends. HDMI is compatible with DVI so, for instance, if you had an LCD monitor with a DVI port, you could get a DVI to HDMI cable. They can be pricey though, so shop around.

Cool, I'll look into it.

Among the previously undisclosed abilities of the PS3 will be internet browsing functions, video chat using an EyeToy style camera peripheral, photo archival and browsing, and of course, advanced video and audio playback functionality.

here we go

seven controllers??? I don't even have enough seats for seven people in my living room.
This could be a problem. The PlayStation and PS2 support eight. (Granted, I've never used more than three simultaneously.) Some truly hardcore sports gamers are gonna be mad.

Load times? What load times?
Believe me, developers will inadvertantly find a way. And they'll be painfully long.

Currently, a realtime demo of the Unreal 3 engine is being shown, running from a PS3.
Are the current development kits using final hardware?

Also did they say what time of the year in 2006 it would be released?

Forget all of that tech talk, it looks like some of these "insiders" were lying or toying with our feelings:

A)GTA launch exclusive for PS3(whether that's time or not, doesnt matter, it will still be exclusive to PS3 at launch)

B)MGS4 for PS3, so Konami defection(in fact I havent seen ANY defection today)

That kills 2 of the BIGGEST rumors that have been spelled and moaned and groaned about here. So what exactly does MS have up their sleeves later tonight?

Sony also unveiled the PS3's graphics chip, the RSX "Reality Synthesizer based on Nvidia technology. The GPU will be capable of 128bit pixel precision, 1080p resolution, some of the highest HD resolution around. It also has over 300 million transistors, larger than any processor available commercially today. It was manufactured using the 90nm process with 8 layers of metal. The RSX is more powerful than two GeForce 6800 ultras, which would cost rough $1000 if bought today.

Double D the Cell specs are a dissapointment, I was hoping for a 1-8 4ghz full on Cell. We have 3.2 Ghz Cell same clock speed as the 360 and although it does have a decent edge on flop rating its much closer between the 360 and PS3 than people imagined and finally the Cell in the PS3 in no way shape or form kills the CPU in 360. I wish it had but it doesn't, the spec are a slight disapointment for me, now show me the games.

Just the GPU transistor count catches up with all the Xbox360 hardware (CPU+GPU). PS3 blows it in EVERY way imaginable. It far surpassed my expactations as far as specs go.

Did anybody catch the gamespot article?

Sony also confirmed the PlayStation 3, will use Blu-Ray discs as its media format. The discs can hold up to six times as much data as current-generation DVDs. It will also support CR-ROM, CDR+W, DVD, DVD-ROM, DVD-R, DVD+R formats. It also confirmed the machine would be backward-compatible all the way to the original PlayStation. It will also have slots for Memory Stick Duo, a SD slot, and a compact flash memory slot. It will also sport a slot for a detachable 2.5 inch HDD somewhat similar the Xbox 360's.

Out of the box, the PS3 will have the capability to support seven Bluetooth controllers. It will also have six USB slots for peripherals--four up front and two in the back.

Sony also laid out the technical specs of the device. The PlayStation 3 will feature the much-vaunted Cell processor, which will run at 3.2 Ghz, giving the whole system 2.18 teraflops of overall performance. It will sport 256mb XDR main RAM at 3.2 Ghz, and have 256MB of GDDR VRAM at 700mhz.

The PlayStation 3 will also sport some hefty multimedia features, such as video chat, internet access, digital photo viewing, digital audio and video. Sony Computer Entertainment head Ken Kutaragi introduced it as a "Super computer for computer entertainment."

I thought those rumors were for a Sony bombshell not MS.

It has to be square then.

According to Hirai, PlayStation 3 (now confirmed as the official title, apparently) will feature dual HD outputs. The supplied controllers are wireless, as stated earlier and use Bluetooth as a connection. These last 24 hours on batteries. The PSP will be a major bonus for PS3 owners. You can have remote access to your PS3 from your PSP, and you can even use a Wi-Fi connection within PS3 to use your PSP as a controller for a PS3 game. PlayStation 3 also features a "built-in network cap".

Phil Harrison has just stated that there will be "an amazing surprise at the end of the show".

Based on transistor counts? :lol

ROTFLOL. So let me get this right, over 100 GIGAFLOPS of extra power comes down to not being that much more powerful? LOL. Come on guys, damage control is one thing, denial is another. Add to that much faster system ram, blu-ray, a more powerful gpu... .lol. But ok, we'll wait for the games to show up. :)

awesome, this next gen will be closer than the majority of GAF thought. It looks as if the nvidia card is the only thing holding the PS3 back.

All those ports, all that functionality. Awesome sony !@

since i am no expert i have been following the beyond3d thread on the ps3

seems as though its impressive but not something that blows the xbox360 out of the water like many had believed.

Sounds like the 360 actually comes out on top in ram with 512megs of main ram and the 10mb of EDram as well. Cell was downgraded from 4ghz to 3.2 ghz as well.

Wha?!? Surely it's more than 24 hours?!

That is pretty crappy, but bluetooth sucks power like crazy. My bluetooth keyboard+mouse last about half as long as my RF keyboard+mouse did.

People are getting their hopes up way to high. There are only a few months of tech time difference. Anybody that was expecting the Xbox <> PS2 18 month time frame difference in quality were doomed for letdown.

Endymion, the specs released so far are not a massive increase on 360, they really arn't. I'm still buying one becasue of the games, but its not worth over inflatting the specs becasue there no doubt from the specs released that 360 is certaintly in the same league as PS3. By the way if you want to see real disspointment go over to the B3D forums.

Nice overall, really like the 'multimedia' approach and the fact that it sounds like Sony's memory stick duos will be the new saving format, since I'll have a bunch for my PSP anyways. (does sound like that right?)

I'm disapointed by a couple things though. A HDD out of the box would be nice, and I'd also like some extra main ram thrown in. The processing capabilities are great though, and it sounds like Nvidia is really delivering with this new GPU, so I'm ok with Cell being 7x3.2ghz.

Overall, good deal, I'm still planning on making PS3 my first next generation system.

Oh shit IGN came on...

Are we even sure the PS3 cell is actually clocked at 3.2Ghz. The way that performance chart reads makes it sound like they were just comparing the Cell to the X360 CPU at the same clockspeed metric, and not actually saying that's the clockspeed of the PS3 Cell.
oh believe me, if it was running at 4GHz, they'd be vaunting it at EVERY opportunity. and you know it.
personally the specs matched my real world assumptions, some of the GAFFERS hyped it up way too much.

Snake!!!!!

i'm surprised there's no Memory Stick support. Duo is nice, but if you own a Cybershot you'll need to get a hub or possible connect your USB cable directly to the PS3 to transfer shots.

Sounds very nice. Blu-Ray is sweet and while I have no possible earthly use for two HDMI ports, I'll take 'em! BUT... I have to say, it's kind of BORING. Not disappointing - the specs are awesome, but it just sounds like a fancy PC.

I almost wish the Revolution is going to be mental, just for some drama.

Lol at you. A higher clocked GPU, with DOUBLE the transistor count developed by the top HW minds in thw world will be of course on par with the R500 [rolleyes]

Xbox360 is being owned just in every way imaginable: CPU power, GPU, more efficient RAM set-up, controllers, USB, Media, Backward compatibility, multimedia possibilities. Xbots am crying. Damage control initiated :lol

SPECULATION: There is an Apple Cinema display that is such a high resolution, two DVI inputs are required to drive the full resolution digitally. The resolution exceeds the maximum specifications of the DVI cables. It requires a specific dual DVI NVidia card and of course a specific driver.

Is it possible (since 1080p was mentioned for the PS3) that the dual HDMI ports are there to future proof the PS3 in case future displays could accept dual inputs (for 1080p+ external data sources)? Just a thought on the reason for the dual HDMI ports.
