Release Date: (Japan) May 7, 2009; (Australia) May 14, 2009; (United States) May 15, 2009
Rotton Tomatoes Scores: 38%

Notable Stars:
- Tom Hanks (Love him or hate him, he's a big Hollywood star)
- Ewan Gordon McGregor (Obi-Wan Kenobi from Star Wars prequels)
- Ayelet Zuer (Bonus shot of her Goddess-ness)

Plot:
Angels & Demons is a bestselling mystery-thriller novel written by American author Dan Brown and published by Pocket Books in 2000. It revolves around the quest of fictional Harvard University symbologist Robert Langdon to uncover the mysteries of a secret society called the Illuminati and to unravel a plot to annihilate Vatican City using destructive antimatter. The book uses the idea of a historical conflict between science and religion, particularly that between the Illuminati and the Roman Catholic Church.

The novel introduces the character Robert Langdon, who is also the protagonist of Brown's subsequent 2003 novel, The Da Vinci Code. It also shares many stylistic elements with its sequel, such as conspiracies of secret societies, a single-day time frame, and the Catholic Church. Ancient history, architecture, and symbolism are also heavily referenced throughout the book. An eponymous film adaptation was released on May 15, 2009.

My Opinion
So I just saw the movie and got back. I will state first that I have not read the book even though I have bought it a couple of days ago in anticipation of reading it prior to the movie. Anyways, I never got around to that so here is my opinion as a complete virgin to the story. I am personally fairly impressed by this movie and think it's a very good follow up to the Da Vinci Code movie. I found that less time in this movie was spent on puzzle/symbol decryption and more was focused on actions. That is not to say there are less decryption in this film, but rather, I think the movie chose not to spend too much time on the "thought process sequence" unlike in the Da Vinci Code movie. Furthermore, the ending of the movie
contained a major twist to the storyline, which is revelation that the heroic priest is actually a crazy bad dude... and that the Illuminati technically don't exist as a current threat. I can only assume that maybe the books hinted at this better than the film, but this twist in the storyline came as a shock to me. There are also some cute humours in the movie such as the "Banco Vatican" sign when Robert Langdon was telling a Vatican personnel that the Vatican is just a big glamorous bank.
I am surprised that NeoGAF doesn't have an official thread about this wonderful movie, so here I am making one in the hopes that I'm not "late to the party". I do not personally agree with the low Rotton Tomatoes score that this movie has received, but I honestly think it deserves much higher than that. The pacing of the movie is tight, the suspense is certainly there in the movie and I, as an audience, was captivated by the mysteries presented by the movie. I can certainly recommend this movie to anybody who are fans of the original Da Vinci, the A&D book, action movie, or mystery thriller genre to check this film out. I love every moment of this movie :)

Fun movie. And this is one movie, at least, where we don't have to worry about it ruining the book.

I never read the books, but I found Angels and Demons a much more enjoyable movie than Da Vinci Code. Faster paced, more action, a more threatening even badass villain. Killer dude was just capping people all merciless and slick like!

I saw the movie, having read the book years prior, and can say it was a nice adaptation...essentially. They cut out a lot of things, including some sub-plots! I can't recall since I read the book a while back, but, there was no mention of
the priest/carmelagno(?) killing the pope because he was his son from a nun through artificial insemination (he thought they did it the normal way); the sub-plot with the reporter and her cameraman was absent; Robert was supposed to have gone up in the helicopter with the priest but, of course, that didn't happen...

It's all part of being adapted to film, I guess...but it was decent overall.

Oh, and the priest was fuckin' hot in that black outfit...all nice and slim...om nom nom!

I thought it was neat. But, was this supposed to take place before or after Davinci Code? I thought it was supposed to be a prequel, but the dialogue makes it seem like a sequel.

It appears it is supposed to be a sequel. Remember Tom Hank's character's encounter with a Vatican personnel at first. They expressed their concern about Tom Hank's previous encounter with the Vatican organization described in the Da Vinci Code.

It's not exactly a "prequel," but it did happen before The DaVinci Code. I know what you mean about the dialogue, though.

Slighty OT:

Tom Hanks rushes to bride Natalia Dearnley's rescue:
AS ACTION movie tough guy, Tom Hanks has battled murderous religious conspiracies, headed to the moon and stormed the D-Day beaches.

But the Hollywood star became a real-life hero to an Australian bride when he stopped filming of his latest blockbuster to get her to the church on time.

Newlywed Natalia Dearnley yesterday told how Hanks rushed to her aid when her car ground to a halt on the way to her wedding in Rome.

As groom Andrew waited inside Rome's famous Pantheon - a centuries-old church - Natalia was stuck outside, the streets blocked by the crew filming Hanks' new movie Angels and Demons.

Seeing this, Hanks called "cut"- stopping production and rushing to help.

"Her limo couldn't deliver her to the door, so I offered my arm so she could get hitched," he said.

Natalia, 28, who studied marketing and advertising at Canberra University before relocating to the UK, said it was like a scene from a movie.

"I've never met a celebrity before, we just went straight for the A-list," she laughed.

"As we were trying to get through Tom came over and asked if he could escort me to my wedding. I couldn't believe it.

"He stopped filming to help me. Then, along with my dad, he grabbed my veil and threw it over his arm.

"Because Tom had his security we walked through the huge tourist crowd. They were all cheering. It was amazing. Dad invited Tom to stay for the wedding but he said he had a movie to make."

However after the ceremony, on June 9 last year, Hanks and director Ron Howard were waiting outside to congratulate them.

"You just can't believe something like this could happen," Natalia said.

The Dearnleys were invited to the world premiere of Angels and Demons in Rome earlier this month.

They had a reunion on the red carpet with Hanks and revealed they were expecting their first child.
I have no intention of seeing this movie, but awww, isn't that sweet?

They (the books) don't have anything to do with each other; but since Hollywood made The DaVinci Code first--which came after Angels & Demons--they sort of retconed The DaVinci Code into Angels & Demons, which came after (movie-wise).

Ewan Mcgreggor did look pretty bad ass for a religious guy.

it was odd.. I was thinking a bit towards the end of the movie that
Ewan Mcgreggor was hero of the century
Boy was I wrong.. :lol

Great movie. Never read the books but I was entertained.

I honestly felt like I sinned after watching the movie though
I was really uncomfortable with what he did to those cardinals

Ewan is definitely hot in this movie :D :D :D Oh, and I really like that last scene where
the Ewan the priest went to meet with all the other Vatican Cardinals thinking he's gonna be Pope. Then he walked into a room with all the Cardinals staring at him and he, along with all the audience, probably thought "Oh shit".

I remember reading a while ago that Naomi Watts was originally on board to play the female lead in this movie. Anyone know why that didn't happen?

Saw this movie yesterday and my IQ must have dropped as a result. So stupid.

1.
LHC. Lol. Scientists in big control room watching realtime 3D of particles flying. How antimatter collection was visualized was even sillier.

2. Lazy plot structure.
Four missions and boss fight. A tedious, lazy struture

3. Retarded in-movie retconning.
"My father told me to fly so I joined the airforces". Needed because someone thought that "omg it'd be awesome if the priest would fly the bomb in the helicopter to the sky, but priests don't know how to fly helicopters."

4. Bad acting. Tom Hanks overexcited, dead serious frothing caused many laughs and giggles in the theatre.

I liked how CERN even made a page about Angel&Demon's vast infactual plot points

'Cause there were many.

I hated hated hated the book. Everything from his description of anti-matter looking like a floating glob of mercury (anti-matter would look like hydrogen) to the statement that scientists don't believe in god because something can't come from nothing was just so totally and astoundingly wrong on every level... The fact that this man can make so much money by continually repackaging the same story with different names makes me weep.
