Official Virtua Fighter 5 Thread

No point comparing DOA to VF5 as they have totally different takes on fighting and moves and DOA has a very basic counter system. VF now more than ever is about timing with frames so when you get latency (as you will no matter how good your connection is) it would alter the entire gameplay, you would miss counters, defence moves etc... and turn it into a punch/kick fest only which would turn it into something it isnt.

Even SF2 couldnt get it right when that was released in live arcade and that has a simple system. For me I think AM2 has done the right thing for fighting by keeping it offline, I just wouldnt play it online anyway with even the slightest hint of latency as for VF it would be a game destroyer. I own DOA4 on 360 and even that is altered online so I just wont play it like that.

FPS are a different kettle of fish to compare as well, like tekneek2k6 says they have built in compenstation for lag and latency but they dont rely on say for example 5 single frames to input a command or miss like VF. Crikey we get latency on GOW with just using a shotgun/chainsaw command so I would shudder to think how you could pull off a perfect counter.

I dont agree with no online function though, their should have been some sort of sharing for saves or a database, even a global time attack time score would have been nice addition. Id opt for uploadable AI learning of a character to save as a tourney fighter with your name and then we we all globally download that days tourney to play in 1player anyday over a bad online fighting mode :)

I received my Hori Fighting Stick III today. Heard that there have been some problems with the Hi-Grade sticks.

Anyone in London with VF5 interested in some challenges?

If so, please PM me.

AM2 did do testing of online play, and found that they'd have to change the fundamental gameplay (like Tecmo did for DOA), in order for it to work properly like DOA. They said no to that plan. I understand why.

I understand why too, but I still think they need to eventually do it anyway.

To me, this is sorta a "customer is always right" issue. People would like that feature. Sure, the diehards would balk, but regardless of their objections it doesn't hurt them to have the option there, and nobody would force them to use it. People who play games online know all about lag, nobody's going to burn Sega HQ down for it. It would be nice for more casual players - like me - who would like to play against something other than the AI, but don't have a ton of gamer friends (and even fewer who care about VF5, the latest in an extremely niche series).

And correct me if I'm wrong, but I heard there's no way to bring your customized fighter to another person's house (or vice versa)... that's even more nonsensical to me. It's the same complaint I had about Soul Calibur III: all that customization is a bit of a waste of time if pretty much you're the only one who's going to enjoy it.

(And for the record: I got VF5 in the mail yesterday, I'm a longtime VF fan, the game is gorgeous and I've been daydreaming all day about playing the **** out of it tonight. I'm NOT "anti-VF".)

Okay...The first thing you'll notice is how freakin large the box it LOL.

It's got a "home" button but my system is off so I can't check what the heck it does right now. The stick has some weight so you can put it in the lap and not have it move around. I was a little scared that the buttons are close together, but they are fine.

The response from the joystick is great. Usually I have to work in my joysticks, but this one was good from the get go. I was pulling off combos and moves on my first try (the way it should be).

I would totally buy this joystick again if I didn't get it. It's solid and built well. you can feel the quality...This was one of the better choices I've made in a while (money wise)...

Thankyou very much for taking the time to do that Mattlikewhoa :) I was worried about the casing at sides but it looks very well made (noticed the two extra buttons now as well above the stick) and much bigger than the overhead pictures Ive seen as I need something wide for me as it will be played in bed hehe Buttons look good enough for me also with spacing so I think thats sold me to try and get it changed with Play Asia and now off to send em an email. Thanks again m8!

Gorgeous, absolutely gorgeous! Let me ask you....what is the casing made of? Plastic or metal? Looks like metal but I can't tell by the pics.

Shryuken guys are now saying it works on the PC and in mame!!!

But here's the thing....doesn't the HRAP3 use a 4-way stick? If that's the case, how well do 4-way sticks operate on 2D fighters using QCF/QCB roll motions? Are they as intuitive as say, Happ's 8-way competition sticks?

We've been over this a 438608934876980376908 times, every time Virtua Fighter is mentioned. *sigh*

The RTS comparison is just stupid. Lag only matters if you can't click a unit before it has moved out of the range of the mouse pointer, and that's a pretty long time, and it can be remedied by simply selecting whatever is closest when clicking. Besides, I'm sure the hardcore Starcraft players only play with LAN for the very same reason as VF players only play in arcades/at home.

VF5 in it's current form would be completely ****ING broken online. Balance would go completely out the door with some characters being affected more than others (counter characters like Aoi would be even less viable). Some moves would be entirely impossible to do. There's a reason why Sega won't even use bluetooth for their stick, they want NO LAG. None. NO LAG. Not 10ms, not 100ms, NO LAG. Because their game ****ING requires it.

They COULD recode it, dumb it down, make every character play essentially the same without any quirks, remove any really difficult moves... but then it wouldn't be Virtua Fighter and there's no point to begin with.

A 4-way stick would only be able to go up/down/left/right, for something like pacman! The HRAP is 8 way like almost everything else.. what you're thinking of is the gate or restrictor, which is square shaped. This comes down to preference, but in general it's said that a sqaure gate makes hitting the diagonals easier, while an octagonal gate makes hitting rolling motions (more like 360's and 720's) easier. I find square gates fine for street fighter personally. Regardless, even if you don't like it, if the HRAP 3 is anything like the other ones, you'll be able to open it up and swap the gate on the joystick with an octagonal one purchased from say akihabarashop.com. Here's a guide for that - Step 8

Not to go offtopic, but this is how DOA4 is played online.

Insanely different than offline play. Latacy played a HUGE part in matches. The frame data for online play is absurd.

Never mind the video, what's that song? It sounds like Q-Tip in there. EDIT: Never mind, it's A Tribe Called Quest I assume...

I'm getting the US version just to support the local VF5 cause, and I was wondering if anybody want to part with their VF5 10th Anniversary Bonus Disc for a fair price ?

Let me know via PM

PS: Yes I know its already available in VF4 Evo.

So I finally got into the sweet spot in quest mode around 3rd/4th dan fighting in the 1st dan-10th dan two arcades. Now I'm getting item battles like every other fight, emblems all the time, tournaments keep appearing, and I'm getting good money from win streaks.

Been decking out my Akira and it's just so damn awesome :D Haven't even messed around with the new characters really, Akira is my bread and butter since VF1 so I'm just learning how to work in his new stuff and customizing him out. With 16 other fighters to work with, I get the feeling I'll still be playing VF5 this time next year.

And man, it just looks SO DAMN GOOD. My favorite thing about the visuals is just the wide variety of stages and costumes. Every match has different graphics and you'll get into a match and go "wow, this looks awesome" when you have just the right background casting just the right lighitng on a character's items.

Definitely one of the best looking games I've ever played, and one of the best playing ones as well :)

You didn't get the memo? We were all at my place playing it a week ago!

Only joking, it was just me and "uk-guy" who, as I am sure you can imagine, gave me a good spanking.

Shame there's no arcade with this, else we could all hook up like VF4 times and see who's got what these days.

$89 at Play Asia. Hmmm...guess I can just wait out the VFHG.
ahh.. looks like I'll be waiting then. I'd rather order two at a time so whoever I'm playing with wont feel left out. 180 bucks for two sticks is a bit much for me right now (especially when theres a bunch of games I want to get this feb/march) so maybe down the road...

Actually, there's one song by Tribe Called Quest(Find a way) and the other song is by Q-tip/Busta Rhymes on a Jdilla memorial Mixtap. RIP.

Damn, the HRAP3 is soooooooo tempting but the $55 shipping makes me say forget that. I'm so close to pulling the trigger for a JP VF5 and stick if I can find the right price that can get it to me reasonably quick otherwise I'll just hold out for the US version. Still holding on to my VSHG order.......

I don't feel like hauling myself up to Hull.

There's been some talk of RBs at Casino. Might be a while though.

I live near Hull at Driffield :)

Forgot to add thanks for the new pics DC, the Lei Fei ones look lovely!

has anyone tried the Virtua Stick or the Hori RAP3 with PS2 the PS2 ?
i'd love to have a stick who's compatible with both !

Not anymore :(

Works for Tekken 5 DR, but Sega seems to have purposely made it not work with VF5 :(

So greedy. Sega making me retire my DC/PS stick. =(

Be extra sad if every upcoming gen is USB and this continues.

LOL it was Oxford and it was only for six months of my life back in 2002. A dark time...

Mo's alive? :) ...

And, indeed, well. And still packs a mean punch with Kagemaru. Tsuuuriya!

RBs?? Que?

I know they've had VF4FT for a while but I refuse to play it since a) it was relegated to a shitty cab and b) my copy of VF5 arrived ;-)

This game is out in Japan, right? Why no spike in PS3 sales then? That's what confuses me...
please keep the SALES-AGE discussion out of this official thread,
the thing I hate the most on GAF are Sales-Age discussions.

This thread is too long for me to find answers, so I'll just ask what's been answered 40 times already probably.

Any difference between US/JPN version worth noting?

If not, anyone know of a good import shop here in Manhattan? :)

um he bolded the question that means he's more important and you must reply with a relevant answer so get to it! None of this complaining allowed!

there is already a Virtua-Bomba-Japan thread getting into Sales-Age junk that is unneeded in the official thread where we are more interested in gameplay, availability, and arcade stick discussions and info that is pertinent to the game.

Nope. Same disc.

Because the game is out in Arcades, Japan has a very strong arcade scene unlike America and Europe. I don't know why people were expecting VF5 to sell huge numbers in Japan. I'm far more interested to see how it sells in Europe and America.

Are you sure? Shipping was about $18 on top of the $115 price to ship it ground.

That is awesome gutter trash thanks. To bebop believe you and me I would much prefer to talk about VF than sales.

Has anyone seen my name in quest mode yet ?

:)
