Eh, seeing how successful it's been for them, it'll probably hit around October/November.

Does anyone else feel like this summer's movie experience is... I dunno... lacking? I watched Wolverine (meh) and Star Trek (cool), but after that it's like I can't bring myself to go to the theater for anything, even when friends invite me along. I'll probably end up seeing Up one day, and maybe Transformers 2, but otherwise I just can't get excited.

Is it me, or the movies being offered?

Wow, Up is still going strong. Why is it going to well compared to the last 2 pixar movies? I'd have thought they had more appeal to kids than this would.

its a summer blockbuster and its not even summer yet.

Its not just you.

Summer 08 was VASTLY better than this year.

Yeah a bit, Transformers 2 is well worth seeing on the big screen, but i think Harry Potter is going to be the best film of the summer.

I'll agree its been weaker than the previous years. The only one I thought was great so far has been Up, Much better than lasts year's weak Pixar film.

But outside of that, Most of the movies haven't really made that lasting impression. I thought both Hangover and Star Trek were solid. Wolverine and T4 were pretty shitty :lol But we still have allot of summer to go, so it could change

No doubt. I can't believe OOTP pulled in almost A BILLION DOLLARS. That's just ridiculous. Also, I am sad that the best HP movie had the lowest gross. :(

In regards to the HP franchises, lowest grossing is a very relative term. I'm sure Warner execs weren't losing too much sleep because PoA left them with an inch of ceiling space in their money room. I do remember some people happily crowing that the HP films were losing their appeal. Some were even questioning whether the interest would remain long enough to see out the series. Oh how quick they were to draw conclusions.

Does anybody know how quick boxofficemojo are at updating their numbers? They have Star Trek's international at 118mill, which seems awfully low to me. I seem to remember someone posting a similar number in a thread a few weeks back. I'm just wondering if that's an outdated figure, maybe it doesn't take into account some international markets.

This summer we saw lame ass February movies get thrown out as Summer Tentpoles. Pelham? Don't make me fucking laugh. That's about as much of a summer movie as the fucking Daytrippers.

I'm glad UP is doing so well. Clearly they had to totally break out of any semblance of making a movie for Kids to cross over to a really healthy mainstream box office return. It's their first movie that is in no way cutesy or kiddy. It's the first one that word of mouth can work on across every demographic. You don't have to start off with "Look, I know it's a kids movie, but..." No talking mice or lovable robots. Just a spectacular movie.

Up is going to soar past Star Trek, I'll be laughing at Cheebs and his ST fixation.

I really hope they abandon any semblance of making movies for kids from here on out. The very fact that it's animated will fill seats for the first week or so and then you get weeks of great word of mouth from everyone else. UP should be proof for them that they don't need the Kid Vote anymore. Crank out those last few sequels and move on, dudes.

Yup, this summer has sucked. For big releases, Public Enemies and District 9 is all that's left that could possibly salvage the summer.

Up was awesome, The Hangover was okay, Terminator Salvation for all its problems still had some fun moments. Wolverine and Star Trek sucked balls. Nothing else even warranted a look.

I caught In the Loop last night and that'll get a limited release in a month. By far the funniest new comedy since oh, Hot Fuzz. It's actually smart, witty and biting and manages to produce such constant laughs that I probably missed 20% of the dialogue.

They list the last time the data was updated for each territory on the specific foreign gross page.

You missed the larger crime (T4 having fun parts).

T4 was good.

Though it's pretty lol to say Star Trek sucked and say T4 was good, when Star Trek was factually better in terms of a) directing, b) writing, c) musical score, d) acting.

I didn't say Terminator Salvation was good, just that amongst its character and story defects it still had some cool moments. That's way more than I could ever say about Star Trek, but I've written tons about that in the main threads.

In a few years everyone will stop being wowed by Star Trek finally having a budget and realize it had absolutely no character development, a dull story and lazy plot progression.

Yeah, I liked Terminator 4. It's a bit of a shame to see it doing that badly, though I'd hardly call it a great movie. It was fun for what it was, which is what I expect from Transformers 2. With that said, it's great to see Up doing so well. It really deserves it.

Man, I just watched the trailer and a clip of it. Rocketed up to MUST SEE.

Thanks!

No, in a few years, people will be excited about Star Trek 2 coming close to release because the first one was awesome.

And "absolutely no character development" is simply wrong.

There's a very small amount of "I gotta be DIFFERENT" people who somehow think Star Trek will be looked at as a shitty movie in a couple years. Which is the most laughable and bitter thing ever.

I would disagree and say that the dogs were certainly aimed at kids. Though, overall the film definitely wasn't for kids.

Up has one more weekend in it before it plummets - while it's on Nemo's track NOW, it's going to lose all 1600 of its 3D theatres to Ice Age on July 1st, and with it over 60% of its gross.

But it's got this week and the weekend to grab some more box office, and chances are it will hold on to edge out The Incredibles around $265mil or so.
Hopefully Disney finds a way to fight that. I doubt Up will lose all its theaters.

I'd like to clarify (You probably weren't talking about me but I thought my message might be misconstrued with the way I worded it) that I liked Star Trek and am merely cheering Up on.

It's your insinuation that people who disagree with you have ulterior motives that is laughable.

Meh. Im enjoying this summer. Trek, Drag me To Hell, The Hangover, these are all some of the more fun summer movies in recent years. As for 2008, Iron Man is a woefully medicore movie in every sense aside from RDJ's charisma, TDK is flawed, but no doubt very awesome still. At this point, I see little difference in quality of summer releases from 2008 to 2009, and we've still got a few big ones coming.

Oh, pretentiousness. You're so cute.

How is that funny?

Would you like to argue that the direction and musical score and writing are better in Terminator Salvation than in Star Trek?

Would anyone on GAF like to try and explain why Terminator Salvation does direction, music, and writing better than Star Trek?

No, really. This will be good. I'm very open minded, so I'd like to see the logic behind that.

its not about being pretentious for the most part I have noticed you seem to have the lowest stardards on all of gaf when it comes to movies and games.

But yes Star trek was better than turdminator salvation.

I have yet to see "Up". Meh...maybe I'll wait for it to come to DVD. Also, "Year One" made more money than I expected. That movie looks awful.

ninj4junpei said:

Yeah, that's a pretty ludicrous assumption that somehow at the end of next week theaters showing UP in 3D won't have a spot open up for 2D showings.

The summer is hit and miss.
Star Trek - Hit
Wolverine - miss (though the g/f loved it for Hugh Jackman and for box office, it wasn't a miss)
The Hangover - Hit
Land of the Lost - miss
UP - Hit
Angels & Demons - Miss
The Proposal - Hit
Terminator Salvation - Miss
Night at the Museum 2 - Neutral (made it's money back, but not a box office smash)
Taking of Pelham 1,2,3 - Miss

Still have:
Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen
Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs
Public Enemies
Bruno
I Love You Beth Cooper
Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince
G-Force
The Ugly Truth
Aliens in the Attic
Funny People
G.I. Joe: The Rise of the Cobra
District 9
Taking Woodstock
The Time Traveler's Wife

Then soon after summer there's Inglorious Basterds, Halloween 2, The Final Destination, Gamer and The Boat That Rocked.

Once again you're hypocrisy shines through.

All the goddamn time you're bitching on gaf about how we're elitits who hate popular music group X, or popular movie Y, or popular actor Z, and that we should learn that there's such a thing as different opinions and that things that are considered utter shit by a big margin of the people can still be meaningful or fun for others. Yet here you are, in this thread, saying that Star Trek is FACTUALLY better than T4, which is a retarded and wrong claim to boot, but also shows you as the gaf elitist you always accuse other gaffers to be.

I sometimes wonder if you just can't accept other people having a different opinion than you, or if you just don't have the skills to make your posts not come across as totally smug and full of hate towards the people you quote. You always seem to be looking for a confrontation about different opinions, not a discussion.

Nah, you're absolutely right. That was pretty hypocritical of me (though I try not to make fun of people for liking something I don't -- that is what gets me the most upset). It's weird, because in real life I never act like that, but for some reason get argumentative online for no apparent reason. I'll read back some posts I write later and think "why did I get so argumentative? I don't really give a shit".

So I can't really argue what you just said. I acted like a douche in that post and I apologize to him.

Caught The Hangover this weekend, and thought it was incredibly overrated. Don't get me wrong, it was funny, it just wasn't as over the top funny as I had been led to believe. But, the director was on the Howard Stern show this week, and he mentioned that he gave up his directing fee to help keep the budget down. In return, the studio gave him part ownership in the film, and now that gamble is going to pay off huge for him. He's going to be rolling in dough. He went so far as to call it "his Star Wars".

I also saw Up for the second time this weekend, this time in 3D. It wasn't designed to be a 3D movie, so there weren't a ton of 3D gimmicks, and I honestly don't think the 3D enhanced it much over the original showing I caught. But, that said, Up is the best movie I've seen so far this summer. Really great from start to finish, and one of Pixar's best. If you haven't seen it, you really should.

I also happen to be one of the people who isn't bowled over by Star Trek. I don't think it's awful by any means, and at times it's quite fun. But it is also very very flawed. And being a huge ST fan, especially of the original series, I have all kinds of issues with the story, but that's been beat to death already.

Tuesday I get a free screening of the Transformers. I personally think that from the trailer it doesn't look that great, but I'm hoping to be surprised. And I can't complain about seeing it for free. I'd be shocked if it hit $300 million though.

Star Trek is fun, but personally I don't think it holds a candle to last years Iron Man, considering both flicks are pretty much in the same situation.

Allot of actors/directors are starting to do that now.
Instead of trying to negotiation that 20million pay check for their work. Its take a very small chuck, but instead get a % of the profits. You lose out if the movie flops...but if it hits it big you get so much more. They were using Eastwood/ Gran Torino for example, were he took the bare min, and received no % gross till Warner made their budget back. But then was taking home 30% of the cash made after the budget was made back. Thought they said it was near 40million he gets.

I loved Star Trek and Up, which are the only big summer movies that I've seen so far. I loved both of them; Star Trek was incredibly fun and entertaining consistently, while Up was just a really great movie. I also saw Drag Me to Hell, which I was somewhat apathetic toward, though I do admit that it was a matter of personal taste and that it was quite well made. I'm really excited for Harry Potter and District 9, and I still hope to see Moon.

Overall, it's a good summer, I think. Last year was pretty much The Dark Knight and WALL-E, with Iron Man being passably good as a result of RDJ (I'd put it just below the original Spider-Man).

Edit: I am excited for Iron Man 2, though, because it's my hope that they'll fix all of the little and big stuff that needed fixing in the first one.

Right. Getting points is pretty common. Getting OWNERSHIP is not. That's what Todd Phillips got for The Hangover.

what exactly is the difference between ownership and getting a percentage of the gross? does the former mean you also get a cut of, for instance, dvd sales profits?

Yep! And it counts for 100% of the sales as opposed to getting a slice of 10-20% of DVD sales as most get when the just get the points. He went into with detail on the Stern show. It's a big difference in the amount of cash he'll be taking home.
