Official Xbox Live Arcade Thread

After the MS quarterly report came out, Moore did mention the big investments in the gaming division and MS paying back investors now (which, in context, seemed like a promise to cut costs). Maybe one of the initiatives is to cut back on XBLA staff and other costs, hence everyone bailing. Makes absolutely zero sense to me since XBLA could be such a high margin business if run properly, but then again I'm a Sega fan from way back in the day, so nothing really surprises me.

This thread should be renamed to the "Official Xbox Live Arcade Bitching Thread"

We could use this thread to trade gamertags and take advantage of this lull in the release schedule to enjoy a nice game of Scramble, Time Pilot, or New Rally-X with our friends and family!

What else should we talk about in the XBLA thread?

-Take bets and discuss the over/under on when the next release will be
-Predict the next 30 year old Arcade game to be released
-Discuss the amazing job MS has done with XBLA
-Talk about how excited we are for Alien Homind and Castlevania
-Kiss up to their community reps

What else is there to talk about? All we know is that there are games we really want in the pipeline. We don't know when they are coming out. They could be released next week, next month, next few months...it could be anything. We also have a steady trend of Xbox Live Arcade Wednesdays with no Arcade games.

What would you rather talk about? Nothing is stopping you from changing the discussion.

When the message gets repeated ad nauseam, it tends to get boring and pointless.

Looks like another XBLA executive has jumped ship from this disaster:

EDIT: Woops, banned link:

Ross Erickson, (soon-to-be-former) Worldwide Games Portfolio Manager for Microsoft's Xbox Live Arcade service emailed ******* (we go way back) to let us know that he'll be leaving their employ at the end of the week to take the position of Vice President, Content Acquisition at Vivendi Games' Sierra Online division.

I hope this means we get about 8+ games a month now.

Ah people are just tired. You know, the secrecy, the delays, the unkept promises, etc. You can't blame people for being annoyed at something they can't help, but desperately want to change. For some people (me included) SOTN is one of the biggest deals on our release calendar this year. And then there's people who are still waiting for games that were announced almost a year ago now. Might not matter to you or be what you want, but stuff like Sonic is a big deal to somebody and they're still waiting for it. They're just tired of waiting is all. Don't take it personally.

I think you should make the "Dr_Cogent XBLA praise thread". Then you and the three other people who think that XBLA is doing just fine can hang out together and not be "harassed" by the rest of the gaming public who is severely let down by the service.

I'm not praising it so much as I am not bitching about it and commenting on that I think the bitching is kinda out of hand. Everyone has a right to disagree though. Incessant endless bitching though is getting this thread nowhere.

I'm not saying no one should comment on how they feel, but it appears to be excessive and pointless.

Instead of bitching about people bitching why don't you change the direction of the discussion in the thread?

Probably already posted, but here is the Major Nelson response. Sounds like something was planned.

"Xbox Live Arcade for the week of 2/19

What’s up with Arcade this week? Well I am glad you ask (or about to) so I’ll give you the straight deal-eo:

There will be no Xbox Live Arcade release this Wednesday, as the scheduled title was delayed. We have a very high bar that each title must pass over in order to be released on Xbox Live Arcade and unfortunately, no titles were ready in time.

There is not much more to say then that (or is there?) As soon as I have news about next week, I’ll fire up the video camera post about it."

He actualy marked out the video camera part as a joke I assume.

I understand - and share - the disappointment and frustration. What I don't understand (and is starting to get boring) is the venom and vitriol, from a couple people in particular.

XBLA raped their mother and killed their sister. And then drove over their dog. I'd be pissed too if XBLA did that to me!

I'm definitely not taking it personally. :)

Do NOT play Frogger with the reskinned graphics, they totally f*ck up the 'final approach' hop. Switch the the classic graphics.

Ooh, I didn't know that was an option. Will give it a go as it's basically unplayable as is.

QFT.

not happy, totally understand but if you made your statement 4 pages back I can safely assume you're still not happy, is there a point to rehash your unhappiness every page in this thread? There used to be some good discussion here but it's lost amongst the same old whining from the same old people.

This is exactly what I am getting at.

I wouldn't be suprised either way. With Crackdown coming out I could see them making an intentional effort not to put something else out there that may get looked over. I have no clue how your demented minds work over there :)

I don't want to keep on bitching, but I was wondering which bugs have been patched for XBLA games? The leaderboards on MBU and Doom are still screwy, Contras co-op still desyncs. The only patches I can remember was Street Fighter II's "don't have to try 20 times to finally connect to a game" problem, and the Smash TV "what you can keep playing the game for free, YoINK fixed that one in a jiffy".

Texas Hold 'em, UNO, Bankshot Billiards 2 and that's all I can remember. Maybe the Hardwood games too.

Which is why every other game seems to have some obvious, crippling issue with what should be standard features.

Give me a break.

Man, you need to shut up with that. It's Xbox Live Arcade, not Xbox Live FirstInHell's Favorite Games Service. The catalog is absolutely fine -- Time Pilot is a classic and totally rules. There are many legitimate things to bitch about when it comes to XBLA, but the catalog really isn't one of them. There hasn't been one truly shitty game on there yet. Games that may not appeal to everyone? Sure, several. Pure shit? None.

Actually, TotemBall...damn, there goes that theory.

From what I can recall...

- Wik was patched to remove a glitch that would give you the Loopnastics achievement for free. However, something about the leaderboards has the fan community all up in arms and apparently Reflexive/MS won't fix it. I don't know the details though.

- Frogger also has an achievement glitch patch. You used to be able to up the number of lives and still get achievements, but it has been fixed.

- Outpost Kaloki X had two broken achievements for, like, ever, but Ninja-Bee finally fixed them back in october.

- UNO seems to be consistantly worked on. Carbonated seems to actually give a damn, unlike most XBLA devs. Gotta love 'em for that.

- These aren't really patches, but every successive Digital Eclipse release has tried to improve upon the formula from the last one, it seems. Like how they finally realized that the Rank 5 achievements are insane, and they replaced them with "Win XX times" achievements instead. At least it's some type of fix...

While we're talking about bugs, what the hell happened to Crystal Quest? The add-on packs just...stopped working. It happened to me and a friend of mine, and I've seen a couple of forum posts on it. You buy the pack, enable it and...nothing happens. It's not that there's been a patch, because there hasn't been one since I last played it (and I booted it up a couple of weeks ago because a guy on my FL had beaten my score so I wanted to beat his) and it's not that the files on the server are broken or something, because I've had mine since they last worked. It doesn't make sense.

Then he shouldn't be asking what game is coming out this week.

I went two pages back and all I read was the usual horseshit complaints. I'm not gonna be bothered to go back any further. You and plenty of others are simply annoying the piss out of those of us who want to read impressions and see whats coming ahead for XBLA.

As long as they can release something next week, I'll be happy. 3 out of 4 releases for the Wednesday's of the month sucks, but at least it's something. I can only assume that the company would try and fix the issues that are causing games to be pushed back, ie. more people on the dev. teams, or whatever it is they can do. That would, I think, be a smart business move.

We have one week left this month, then 4 Wednesday's in March. If there aren't 6 out of 10 of those games released by the end of March, I think people can start calling foul.

And for the love of god, release SotN already. My ps2 doesn't read ps1 games anymore so I can't play my SotN. I think my laser died from playing SotN and FFT all the time. Plus I want some easy achievement points.

That's kind of the problem. There is no impressions to give and there is no way to see what is coming ahead for XBLA.

Man, if only.

Anyhow, on a non-bitching XBLA related topic. There was a game announced for XBLA right before the 360 launched, and it was hyped all over the place. It was an Unreal3 powered arcade-type game, that was apparently like a futuristic basketball game. What ever happened to this game?

Hoopworld? Haven't heard much about it in a while.

Did they ever patch the high score tables in Gauntlet? (The character-specific ones that have achievements related to them.)

Roboblitz used the U3 engine, but it wasn't a basketball game. I think I read about another XBLA game coming out using the U3 engine - but maybe I am just not remembering correctly.

You guys are crazy.

See, what I like most about XBLA is that it's not constantly sucking down my Microsoft Points. If I buy 1600 MS points, they last me two or three months, because Microsoft is carefully limiting the number of titles that come out.

Nintendo, on the other hand, is putting out 3 or 4 games per week on Virtual Console, and my wallet has been suffering immensely because of that output. I've gone through about 6,000 Wii points in the last two months. Ouch!

Microsoft is just trying to help consumers be fiscally responsible. I appreciate that.
