IGN XBOX 360 has a new hands-on preview of Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo HD Remix, Highlights are as follows.

ncluded in the new look Puzzle Fighter are four modes of play, one of which has been added to address balancing issues. X Mode is a port of the classic arcade game without changing the rules. Y mode requires you to match three gems of a like color to clear them rather than using the customary power gem. Z Mode requires you to rotate the gems into place as they slowly build upwards rather than falling.

X' mode is the newly tuned mode that has been rebalanced for online play. In it, Devilot only deals 85% of the normal damage. Chun Li has been boosted to do 120% of her normal damage and Akuma takes 20% more damage than other characters when he gets hit. A few of the drop patterns have also been changed and the ability to view your opponent's has been added.

Playing with the Xbox 360 controller is precise and smooth enough that we only had a few misplaced drops while playing. For once, the d-pad on the 360 controller actually works better than the analog stick. Hardcore Puzzle Fighter fans may find the PS3 d-pad preferable when the game launches on both systems later this year, but for amateur players the 360 controller will do just fine.

Also, they have unveiled the full achivement list for the game.

Power Made Flesh - 6 points: Play as Akuma on Normal Difficulty or harder.
Meeting People is Easy - 7 points: Join or Host a 4 person Player Match.
Get Your Feet Wet - 7 points: Win three Ranked Matches of X or X' Mode.
Playing to Win - 15 points: Win 20 Ranked Matches in X' Mode.
Modern Battle Master - 10 points: Complete X' Arcde Mode on Hard or Expert Difficulty.
Classic Battle Master - 10 points: Complete X Arcade Mode on Hard or Expert Difficulty.
Alternative Lifestyles - 10 points: Complete Y or Z Arcade Modes on Hard or Expert Difficulty.
Quarter Miser - 10 points: Complete the game on Normal Difficulty or harder without continuing.
The Mother Lode - 25 points: Break a Power Gem of size 25 or larger on Normal Difficulty or harder.
The Longest Journy - 30 points: Complete X' Mode on Hard or Expert Mode using only Dan.
Chain, Chain, Chain - 30 points: Perform a 5 chain combo in X or X' mode, Normal Difficulty or harder.
Chain of Jewels… - 40 points: Perform a 7 chain combo in X or X' mode, Normal Difficulty or harder.

Finally, they have two fresh videos ready for your viewing pleasure.

Well Wing Commander is as shitty as advertised but surprisingly I didn't find Super Contra quite as repugnant as I was expecting it to be. I vaugely remember the arcade version of Super Contra and never played the NES version 'cause by the time it came out I was pretty much an Amiga/Genesis only gamer so I've got no real history or expectations going into it. It reminded me of all those similar games around the same time period like Heavy Barrel, Mercs, Midnight Resistance, etc. which is a good thing. The side panel graphics are pretty much the worst looking thing ever though. It's sort of like Contra envisioned by Napoleon Dynamite....or Wollan.

Rare's Nick Burton on how the sales of XBLA titles work.

Thanks, if you happen to find the rest of his presentation please post it. I'm interested in learning about the behind the scenes type stuff especially when it comes to Rare.

That is impressive that it has already broken even. It is one of the lower selling Arcade titles based on the leaderboards. It is cool that these games will just continue to sell for the life cycle of the 360, and there is no real worry of them becoming unavailable.

I am glad to see the game break even, I really enjoyed it. I think a lot of people were turned off by the difficulty - if you could continue your progress from every level maybe it would've sold better.

Wing Commander enters shit arena to fight for the XBLA shit crown. Who will be hailed as king shit? Novadrome? Feeding Frenzy? Totemball? Or the crowd's new favorite, Wing Commander? Only the shiitiest survive.

Feeding Frenzy would be more fun if it was harder and the whole thing could've been done better. At least the base game is ok. Totemball and Novadrome have no redeeming quality at all.

Another category is the "not so classic" games. Were we really hurting for New Rally X, Gyruss and Yie Ar Kung Fu?

I think Contra and Super Contra has all of those beaten in the shit depatment all things considered.

Contra is more of a bad port, rather than a shitty game that shouldn't have been ported. Haven't tried Super Contra and probably won't. Double Dragon fits in both categories, but at least it came out before SoR2 (and probably FF) came out for the service. What's the point of putting out Yie Ar Kung Fu when Street Fighter 2 is right there?

Crystal Quest fits that category too. Who in the world wanted an updated version of Crystal Quest? 1983 will never die as long as XBLA is around.

Can't wait to see someone waste their time and retool Make Trax for XBLA.

I still can't believe I bought Crystal Quest. It came out when it was like a month per release and I thought "ooh maybe it gets more fun when it gets harder!". Yeah, no.

EDIT - aww, XBLA Survivor got locked :(

Why did it get locked?

Anyway, from the department of vagueness comes this announcement.

Playfirst Inc and Hudson have entered into a strategic alliance to bring popular PlayFirst titles such as Diner Dash and Oasis among others to console download services starting in 2008. no specific service has been mentioned, but it does seem logical that the Xbox Live Arcade would be one of those services.

I know WC:A is crap, but I really want it to be a success so that there is a better chance of getting a new game for the 360.

Is it possible to take a hard drive, put it on another console, and play your XBLA games? I want to bring Bomberman to a friend's house.
Yes. They're connected to your gamer profile.

As long as he is connected to Live at his friend house. If he is offline, all arcade games will revert to demo mode, since they are (as all payed downloads) tied to your gamer profile (when online) and your console serial number (all accounts can play offline at that console).

If you are planning to play offline at your friends house, better to bring the whole console.

Then you'll only get more WC:A games. Buying Project Sylpheed would be a better chance of getting a new proper WC game for the 360. But, alas, it's been a long time since a game in this genre has sold well on any platform.

Has anyone else purchased the new course for 3D Mini Golf. It's like they've hired some new artists or changed the engine, or something. Can't put my finger on it exactly, but some of the holes look just lovely. There are also a lot of holes that are tough as nails to par. But somehow, to my eyes, the new course looks significantly better and meatier than the ones that came with the game. From the lighting, to the amount of detail and movement around the course...it really seems that a lot of effort went into it. Which is nice, and I applaud that effort. Hope it sells well enough for them to make another course.

I was waiting for a new course to come out when my system borked out. My wife loves the game. I'll snag this as soon as I get it back.

The new 3D Ultra Minigolf courses really do look great. They're much bigger and have more objects in them. The lighting looks much better too. I was surprised that was only a 20mb download.

The courses also seem to be much more difficult then the ones that came with the game.

WTF is with the Wing Commander hate? Have any of you playing it online? It's quite addictive, and with 16-player rooms to boot. There's surprising variety as the various ships handle and feel quite differently. I've gotten used to the controls as well.

Novadrome was fun for a while, but lack of a multiplayer base means that it wasn't worth $10, alas.

If you want to complain about bad XBLA games, complain about the ones that deserve it, like Mad Tracks. That is shit and I want my money back. I don't play 3D Minigolf anymore, either. Of course, I don't play most of them with any regularity, just Texas Hold'Em (my most-played game, and it was free) and recently Bomberman and WCA.

I bought Yie Ar simply for the nostalgia of it all. Takes me back to when I was a teenager.

:lol :lol :lol

This is the same guy hating on Wing Commander. :lol

I erased Yie Ar from my HD (and my brain) within 30 seconds of downloading it. What a piece of shit.

I don't know why that worst game on XBLA survivor thread was locked, I would've liked to seen the results of that. I think the set up was a little backwards though. It needs to be that we vote off the least offensive game until all we are left with is the stinkiest, hunk of shit avaliable for digital distribution.

We shall crown you king poop.

When you grow up you'll learn the value of nostalgia. For WC:A there's not even that to remedy it. As for me, I easily passed on both titles.

Yeah, YOU should remake the thread. I think what we had before it was locked was the definitive list. I was aware that the mechanism was backwards but I thought that doing an anti-survivor would be strange and confusing.
I'm pretty sure as long as my name isn't listed as the OP it won't get locked as fast so go for it.

I don't mean to temporarily derail this thread, but what the hell is this? :lol Is that what I think it is?

That looked good. I liked the fighting for the girl part at the end a la Double Dragon. Before people get all moist though, it's coming out in 2008. Don't call for it to be out next week like that friggin Space Giraffe.

I swear to god if Space Giraffe isn't out this Wednesday I'm going to be pissed.

I'm kidding.

Or am I?

I'm not kidding I ****ing want the game.

this time we are waiting to go into "final cert", which is a two week process leading to "certification" which allows your game to be released.
WOOT!

We are learning a lot about the XBLA submission process from Mr.Minter. I hope MS don't mind him divulging all this info :)

No word on D&D: SoM, Final Fight, or any SNK games? :(

Let me see, don't expect D & D anytime ever unless a Capcom/Atari alliance arises. As for Final Fight, Capcom seems kind of busy at the moment so try again next year. Finally, nobody really knows what is going with SNK right now, they have a couple of games slated for the system (Metal Slug, Fatal Fury Special) but those look to be not exactly around the corner.
